Scanning the Waiver Wire: Week 11

November 17th, 2009
Jason Snelling – Michael Turner has a high ankle sprain and will possibly miss up to a month, despite what the Falcons’ brass thinks – unless, it’s not a high ankle sprain. Jason Smelly went for 61 yards on 18 carries in Week 10, including a touchdown, and also ran well in Week 9 (68 yards on only 7 carries). With Jerious Norwood's status still uncertain, Snelling should see 20+ carries for as long as Turner is out. Two of the Falcons next four games are against New Orleans, who are giving up 4.5 YPC and have given up 12 rushing touchdowns, and Tampa Bay, who are ranked 31st against the rush and giving up 4.9 YPC. Plus, Atlanta plays Buffalo in Week 16 who are last against the run. Snelling has also proved more than capable out of the backfield as he has 132 yards receiving on only 14 catches for a 18.9 average.
Bernard Scott (& Larry Johnson?) - The Bengals are hopeful to have Benson back next week – keep dreaming. Hip injuries ended both Bo Jackson’s and Priest Holmes’ careers. Jerious Norwood was originally listed as day-to-day after he hurt his hip in Week 6 and hasn’t played since. Next week my ass – the Bengals don’t even believe the bullshit that they are slinging – otherwise why would they have signed that pile of poo Larry Johnson? The Bengals next two games are against Oakland, 30th ranked against the run, and Cleveland, 29th ranked against the run. Given that Cedric Benson is having the year he is, it’s fair to assume that LJ or Bernard Scott could bust off similar production – at least against the dregs of the league. The Bengals are 6th in rushing attempts this season, and the offense is good enough to at least put one of these two guys in position to score touchdowns.
Laveranues Coles – He is worth a flier if you need help at the receiver position – frankly, there isn’t much left out there. He has now gone for 72 & 69 yards his last two games, and Chris Henry is out for the season. With Benson possibly out for a bit, Palmer will take to the air, and Coles is still able to work the sidelines at this stage of his career.
Ladell Betts – He makes the list for a second consecutive week as Portis may miss at least a few more weeks due to the lingering effects from his concussion. Betts looked better last week than Portis has all year. His 114 yards rushing were the highest total for a Redskins player this season and he did it against a Denver D that ranked 12th against the rush. As we pointed out last week, this outburst shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone. In his 14 career games in which he has gotten 15+ carries, Betts has rushed for at least 80 yards in eleven of the games. In those same games with 15+ carries, he is averaging 125 TOTAL yards. He was a savior for Portis’ owners in 2006 and could be the same for them again this year.
Justin Forsett – It does not look good for starter Julius Jones. Besides the fact that his skill-set has completely eroded, he also suffered a broken rib and has internal bleeding in his lung. He will likely miss at least most of the season. Forsett looked good last week against Arizona who is currently ranked 8th against the run. On Sunday, Forsett had 17 carries for 123 yards and a score and currently averages 6.6 YPC. He is also catching balls out of the backfield (95 yards over the last three games in split duties). He has a few good match-ups coming up against the Rams (28th against the run) and Tampa Bay (31st against the run). The Tampa game is in Week 15, which is likely in your fantasy playoffs.
Beanie Wells – We previously advised picking him up when he was off to a slow start before everyone else jumped on him. We knew he would get the majority of the carries, but just did not know in which week. Well… Wells is the main guy going forward. He was great on Sunday rushing for 85 yards & two scores on only 16 carries. With games against St.Louis and Detroit in Weeks 15 & 16, what more could you ask for. Hopefully you took our advice earlier in the season. If you’re too late in the free agent pecking order this week, you won’t get him.
Cincinnati Defense - This defense is impressive. In their last three games, they held the Bears, Ravens and Steelers to a combined 29 points, and their next three games are against Oakland, Cleveland, & Detroit. The defense was great against Cutler, Flacco and Roethlisberger, so they should have no trouble with the likes of Russell, Quinn and Stafford. Cleveland & Oakland are the two lowest ranked teams in scoring this season, while the Lions currently rank 26th in points scored. Combined, the teams have 9 touchdowns & 40 interceptions on the season.
