News Breakers

Thomas Jones Ready to Go expand +

New York Jets running back Thomas Jones is at camp and ready to put all the contract talk behind him. He reportedly was upset with his current contract, and threatened to hold out if he didn't receiver a new one. However, the Jets stood their ground and Jones is at camp, without that new contract, but ready to work.

Pyro's Take:

This is good news for Jones' owners, as he appears to have matured and realized that a few million dollars (when you already make more than 95% of the world's population) isn't going to make much of a difference. However, with backup running back Leon Washington and rookie Shoon Greene in camp as well, Jones could lose carries to them.

Ray Rice to start in RBBC scenario expand +

Cam Cameron, the Baltimore Ravens OC, said that he will be using a, "running back by committee. You could see all three of them in the game at the same time. You could see any combination of the two." However, with Willis McGahee recovering from surgery until now, Rice is the starter as training camp arrives.

Pyro's Take:

Rice will get the majority of the carries in this system, but he will lose some to McGahee and to McClain, who will probably be used on short-yardage and goal-line situations. But at the end of the season, Rice will be Baltimore's leading rusher.

Willis McGahee to be part of RBBC expand +

Cam Cameron, the Baltimore Ravens OC, said that he will be using a, "running back by committee. You could see all three of them in the game at the same time. You could see any combination of the two."

Pyro's Take:

With his injury problems and relatively old age, McGahee will take a back seat to Rice in this system. McGahee will still get a decent amount of carries, but Rice will get the majority of them and McClain will be used on short-yardage and goal-line situations.

Le'Ron McClain to be part of RBBC expand +

Cam Cameron, the Baltimore Ravens OC, said that he will be using a, "running back by committee. You could see all three of them in the game at the same time. You could see any combination of the two."

Pyro's Take:

McClain won't get nearly as many touches as he did last year, as Rice will get the majority of the carries in this system. However, McClain will be used mostly on short-yardage and goal-line situations, so he will get plenty of scoring opportunities.

More touches for Fred Jackson expand +

The Bills backup RB will have an increased role in the offense according to RB coach Eric Studesville. "So we’re going to do it, get him more touches and find more ways to get him in the game."

Pyro's Take:

Jackson proved last season that he can handle the load. He put up 151 all-purpose yards against the Redskins and 131 rushing yards against the Patriots- both times he started for the injured Marshawn Lynch.

Fred Jackson to start first three games expand +

The Bills RB will start the first three games of the season due to the three-game suspension of Marshawn Lynch.

Pyro's Take:

This could be a career changer for Jackson. Last year, he totaled 151 all-purpose yards against the Redskins and 131 rushing yards against the Patriots when starting for an injured Lynch. If Jackson can capitalize, Lynch could find his touches very limited.

Matt Forte to share field space with Kevin Jones expand +

The Chicago Bears will run plays where the two RBs are on the field at the same time. Forte will also lose some touches to Jones.

Pyro's Take:

This is no surprise, as the Bears are going to "limit" Forte's touches this year as they don't want to wear him down too quickly. Offensive Coordinator Ron Turner said, "We got to spell Matt. Matt had too many snaps last year. We got to get other guys involved and get Kevin on the field." But fear not, Forte is still the man in Chi-town (other than Jay Cutler).

Matt Forte limited in passing game expand +

Bears beat writer Vaughn McClure said that Forte won't have as many receptions as last year as the Bears would rather give the ball to him via the hand-off.

Pyro's Take:

Forte caught 63 passes last year, more than any other NFL RB, so this is somewhat of a surprise. But the Bears are planning on scaling down on Forte's touches just a tad to give him a little more rest of game day. Don't worry, his fantasy value is still sky-high.

Kevin Jones and Matt Forte on the field together expand +

Chicago's OC Ron Turner said that the Bears will run plays where the two RBs are on the field at the same time. "We'll do a little bit of that. We have a lot of guys that can do different things, so we can add more things personnel wise."

Pyro's Take:

This is great news for Jones, who had a healthy offseason for the first time in three years. He and Forte could be unstoppable in the same backfield.

Kevin Jones to get more carries expand +

The Bears backup RB will definitely get more than his 34 carries he had last season as the Bears plan to rest Forte during games a little more than they did last year. OC Ron Tuner said, "He'll just be a guy to spell Matt in our base package. He's going to have a pretty good role for us."

Pyro's Take:

Jones is looking sharp this offseason, as he lost some weight and beat writer Vaughn McClure said his "burst is back." Jones will see significant time on the field but still not enough to have much fantasy impact.

James Davis impresses Browns expand +

The sixth-round pick out of this year's draft has impressed the Browns with his "quick feet" and "aggressive running" according to Cleveland Plain Dealer beat writer Tony Grossi.

Pyro's Take:

Davis is currently third on the depth chart behind Jamal Lewis and Jerome Harrison at RB but Mangini has noticed him, remarking how he's always the first down the field at special teams. Good to hear hard work is still being noticed these days.

Cowboys' Barber drops five pounds expand +

The top RB for the Dallas Cowboys, Marion Barber, dropped five pounds this offseason and appears to have "more wiggle" according to Matt Mosley of ESPN.com.

Pyro's Take:

Barber is still running over linebackers but this more fluid and aerodynamic approach should help him burst into the open field a little more often.

Cowboys want to be top 10 in rushing expand +

Dallas Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said on July 28th that he wants his team to be in the top-10 in the league in rushing this season. "We need to get in the top 10 in the running game," he said.

Pyro's Take:

The Cowboys finished 21st in rushing last year, but definitely have the firepower to compete with the best in the league. The three-headed monster of Marion Barber, Felix Jones and Tashard Choice will all feature prominently in the running game and their different styles will keep teams off-balance.

Tashard Choice to get more playing time expand +

The Dallas Cowboys fourth-round pick from last year is slated to get more playing time this year, according to RB coach Skip Peete. "I think he's going to have the opportunity to play a lot this year."

Pyro's Take:

Choice excelled when he filled in for Barber and Jones last December, averaging 122 YPG in four games. ESPN.com's Matt Mosley has also been really impressed with Choice and thinks he will play three to four series per game. But he definitely won't come close to putting up numbers he did last year now that Barber and Jones will be in the lineup.

Felix Jones to return kicks expand +

The Dallas Cowboys most explosive player will be the main kick returner this season, after handling only some of the duties last year.

Pyro's Take:

The Cowboys are looking to get the ball into Jones' hands whenever they can, as he's a beast in the open field. He probably won't return many punts as he had trouble fielding those cleanly last year, but he will be a huge force returning kicks.

Peyton Hills has been star of camp expand +

According to Broncos beat writer Frank Schwab, Peyton Hills has been "the standout player of the camp." Hills had a TD catch in an 11-on-11 end zone drill and he got extra reps with the first team because Correll Buckhalter was out on Monday.

Pyro's Take:

Hills has been used more at tailback than fullback this year, but head coach Josh McDaniels is hesitant to list him at a specific position. He did say there will be very few two-back sets, which gives more confusion to the situation than anything. Regardless, we still don't expect him to do much this year.

1000 yards for Knowshon Moreno? expand +

Denver Broncos beat writer Mike Kils expects Moreno to get about 1100 all-purpose yards this year (800 rushing, 300 receiving).

Pyro's Take:

This is a very ambitious, yet attainable, number for the rookie. But of course, he has to sign that contract first, which looks to happen later rather than sooner.

Jordan and Buckhalter split reps for Broncos expand +

RBs Correll Buckhalter and LaMont Jordan have split first team reps since training camp has opened.

Pyro's Take:

With rookie Knowshon Moreno still unsigned, Jordan and Buckhalter have been taking full advantage of his absence. Buckhalter will likely finish ahead of Jordan on the depth chart, but Jordan could be the guy to get the goal-line carries.

High praise for Lions RB Kevin Smith expand +

Detroit Lions GM Martin Mayhew raved about RB Kevin Smith at practice on Monday. ""He's on the rise...I think he's a good back, no matter what scheme you're in...He's ready to go. We plan on using him and I'm excited about seeing him work."

Pyro's Take:

Mayhew also said for Smith to almost get 1,000 yards for the Lions last year was "pretty impressive." Smith has been running hills in the offseason and has shown improved strength in his lower body. We are really high on him and expect him to shine in an otherwise bleak city.

DeShawn Wynn's stock rising expand +

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the No. 3 RB's stock, "may be at an all-time high within the organization."

Pyro's Take:

Brandon Jackson is the No. 2 back, but Wynn, who was the leading rusher for the Packers for seven games in 2007, could be nipping at his heels. He's gotten himself into the best shape of his life but he needs to stay healthy. He won't challenge Grant for the starting spot, but he could get some valuable carries if he continues to impress.

Packers want to run more expand +

Green Bay Packers OC Joe Philbin said he wants to run "32-34 times a game...we need to get it up in the 30s on a consistent basis."

Pyro's Take:

The Packers ran the ball 43% of the time last year, and we honestly don't expect them to move from their pass-first mentality. They got stars at WR and QB. So, while Grant will see more carries, don't expect his production to increase dramatically.

Steve Slaton gains weight expand +

Second-year RB Steve Slaton gained nine pounds in the offseason as he bulked up for the Houston Texans.

Pyro's Take:

This shouldn't have a profound effect on his numbers. He wanted to get bigger so he can run better on the inside, but those carries figure to go to Chris Brown. Plus, Slaton figures to have that extra weight gone by the end of camp anyways.

Chris Brown to pound the rock expand +

Houston Texans RB coach Chick Harris expects to use Brown a lot in short-yardage situations to compliment the shifty Steve Slaton. "He's got a good sense of inside run skills, and he's a big 234-pound guy that can give us that added dimension of a hammer effect and then you have Steve coming in."

Pyro's Take:

If Brown can stay healthy, we like him to get a lot of goal-line carries. But we don't envision him having much of a year other than that due to the fantastic rookie season Slaton recorded last year.

Joseph Addai's job safe expand +

The Indianapolis Star Tribune reports that Addai is the clear cut No. 1 running back on the Colts. "Make no mistake, Addai is the starter."

Pyro's Take:

Addai only played in 12 games last year, registering career lows in rushing attempts, yards and TDs, but this is good news after the Colts said in July they haven't been "fully satisfied" with Addai's production. Rookie Donald Brown will take touches away from Addai, and Addai won't get the carries Edge got while he was in town, but he's the starter and will put up respectable numbers.

Colts and Donald Brown agree to contract expand +

The Indianapolis Colts have signed their first round draft pick, RB Donald Brown, to a four-year contract.

Pyro's Take:

Brown signed just before training camp opened, which is good because he doesn't miss any time. The Colts are raving about him, and we expect him to get a fair amount of touches this year.

Donald Brown thrust into offense expand +

Coach Jim Caldwell likes that rookie RB Donald Brown is signed and at practice on time with the Colts. "Donald Brown is a guy we anticipate will move quickly, in terms of his knowledge of the game and how he performs out on the field, so it will be exciting to see him in pads and see what he can do."

Pyro's Take:

Brown will finish in the top-40 RBs this year. With the Colts' staff growing impatient with Addai, Brown will see a significant amount of touches this season, as Caldwell alluded to.

MJD expects Jaguars offense to be "explosive" expand +

RB Maurice Jones-Drew, the fourth-year star in Jacksonville, is excited about the Jags offense after having a dormant year last season. "We're back to where we were in the beginning. When I first got (to Jacksonville), we were a powerhouse running attack... I know we're going to be able to run the ball and throw it...It's going to be an explosive offense again."

Pyro's Take:

MJD has a point. Last year, the Jags were 20th in the NFL in total offense, and their offensive line was in shambles. But the Jags have brought in several key free agents, and we really like MJD to get more touches this season than he ever has. Easily a top-five back.

Rashad Jennings signs with Jags expand +

The Jacksonville Jaguars have agreed to terms with their seventh-round draft choice Rashad Jennings. Jennings signed a four-year, $1.788 million contract.

Pyro's Take:

Jennings has put together an impressive offseason and will challenge Greg Jones for the backup RB spot to MJD. However, MJD will own the rushing attack so expect nothing much out of either of these guys.

Larry Johnson looking strong expand +

The Kansas City Chiefs RB Larry Johnson has impressed new coach Todd Haley this season."From the day I took the job, Larry Johnson has appeared to enjoy football and enjoy working at it, and I'm excited about it," Haley said.

Pyro's Take:

Johnson has also looked "lean, quick and powerful" thus far in training camp according to John Marshall of the AP. It appears as if LJ put the last two disastrous seasons behind him, but we still don't buy him returning to Pro-Bowl form.

Kolby Smith still rehabbing expand +

The Chiefs backup RB is still rehabbing from an undisclosed knee injury he suffered last season and is not practicing with the team.

Pyro's Take:

Smith has been conditioning on the side, but has yet to participate in team drills or activities. He's been rehabbing this knee for a while, and he won't be a fantasy factor in 2009.

Chiefs RB competition "interesting battle" expand +

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley called the RB competition an "interesting battle" between the incumbent Larry Johnson and rookie Jamaal Charles.

Pyro's Take:

LJ appears to have the upper hand here, but Charles will eat into Johnson's carries especially as the season rolls on.

Ricky Williams better than last year expand +

Miami Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano said that RB Ricky Williams is "ahead of last year" and he attended all of the team's 46 workouts.

Pyro's Take:

Williams, whose new favorite hobby is massage therapy, appears to be taking football seriously after he was soul searching for the last five years. If you draft Ronnie Brown, you have to make plans for Ricky as a handcuff. They are both in contract years.

Addition of Percy Harvin good for Adrian Peterson expand +

All-Pro RB Adrian Peterson said that the addition of rookie Percy Harvin to the pass game of the Vikings should make the opposing defense, "Not able to stack the box and add that extra defender."

Pyro's Take:

Basically, this means more running room for Peterson. However, we're not totally buying it. "All Day" is the best RB in the league, so teams aren't going to let up on him until the Vikings put together some form of passing attack. Nice try Peterson, but teams aren't going to let you run wild while they focus on a rookie.

Patriots' Morris to be used in matchups expand +

According to New England Patriots beat writer Mike Reiss, RB Sammy Morris will be the third RB on the depth chart but "matchups against the opposition should play a big part" in who gets the carries.

Pyro's Take:

This just affirms that Morris is not a fantasy producer. End of story.

Fred Taylor No. 2 RB on the Patriots expand +

According to New England Patriots beat writer Mike Reiss, RB Fred Taylor will get the majority of the carries not given to Kevin Faulk.

Pyro's Take:

Taylor is getting old (33) and he's clearly on the decline. However, the Patriots have three RBs that are 30 or older (Faulk, Taylor, Sammy Morris) so they will probably use a committee approach in order to keep them all fresh.

Reggie Bush leaves practice due to knee expand +

New Orleans Saints RB Reggie Bush left practice Wednesday morning to ice his knee, but he says it was "just as a precaution." He would return to practice Wednesday evening.

Pyro's Take:

Bush had surgery on his left knee in December to repair torn cartilage, but neither he nor the Saints are concerned with his injury. Coach Sean Payton has limited Bush's work load but stressed Bush is ready to play a full NFL game.

Reggie Bush looking "stunningly explosive" expand +

ESPN.com's Chris Mortensen reports that New Orleans Saints RB Reggie Bush looked "stunningly explosive" during his visit to training camp and that Bush said he's 90-95% healthy.

Pyro's Take:

Bush had microfracture surgery to repair torn cartilage in his knee in December and he's being limited in practice by coach Sean Payton. However, he should be ready to go come week 1 and if Mort is right, we could be seeing the Bush we're used to.

Cardinals' RB Beanie Wells practices expand +

For the first time since injuring his ankle on Aug. 1, rookie RB Beanie Wells practiced at full speed while making cuts in solo drills without major pain.

Pyro's Take:

Wells is still unlikely to play in the Cardinals' first preseason game on Thursday, as head coach Ken Whisenhunt added, "it's probably not greatly possible. . . .But there are plenty of preseason games left we can get him in, so we should be OK." We expected Wells to take over the starting job from Tim Hightower by the end of September, but this injury will delay it a little more.

Cardinals' RB Hightower increases lead on Beanie Wells expand +

According to Arizona Cardinals beat writer Daniel Urban, Tim Hightower is "stretching the distance" between he and rookie RB Beanie Wells on the depth chart.

Pyro's Take:

Wells sat out last week with an injured ankle, and that is never good for a rookie. Every day Wells misses time is a good day for Hightower. However, we predicted Wells to takeover Hightower's starting job by the end of September, and this injury will only delay that by one or two weeks.

Falcons list Norwood as kick returner expand +

The Atlanta Falcons have listed their speedy and shifty RB Jerious Norwood as their main kick returner this year.

Pyro's Take:

ESPN.com's Pat Yasinskas says this "may only be temporary" because Norwood will see a fair amount of playing time at RB, but he's the best they got so we think the Falcons will stick with him.

Willis McGahee has improved attitude expand +

Baltimore Ravens RB Willis McGahee, known for his questionable work ethic, injury-prone history and dodgy attitude, has really impressed RB coach Wilbert Montgomery during training camp. "“We’ve got a smarter Willis McGahee, more of a student of the game with a good work ethic."

Pyro's Take:

While this may not seem like much, this is actually high praise for McGahee. Unfortunately, he's still second behind Ray Rice on the depth chart, but he'll see his fair share of carries as the Ravens use a RBBC system.

Rice starter on Ravens first depth chart expand +

The Baltimore Ravens have released their first depth chart of the season, and as expected, Ray Rice tops the list at RB with Willis McGahee listed as the backup.

Pyro's Take:

No surprise here, as Rice has impressed in the offseason and McGahee has been dealing with surgery. Rice is still on track to be one of the biggest sleepers this year.

Todd Heap held out of Monday morning's practice expand +

Baltimore Ravens' veteran TE Todd Heap was held out of practice Monday morning due to tightness in his lower back.

Pyro's Take:

Heap downplayed the issue, saying, ""My body is feeling good, so I'm just trying to be smart with what I'm doing...I'm just going to try to play it by ear." Heap has looked good this offseason and we think it's no big deal as well.

Suspended Lynch still making plays expand +

According to Buffalo Bills beat writer Mark Gaughan, starting RB Marshawn Lynch "had a good run around end for a TD of about 8 yards," and on another play "burst up a big hole through the middle" in 11-on-11 drills.

Pyro's Take:

Lynch is suspended for the first three games of the season, but apparently he's not letting that affect his play. However, we expect backup Fred Jackson to do well starting in Lynch's place, and Lynch's role could be diminished as the season progresses.

Panthers' Stewart sits out Wednesday's practices expand +

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart sat out both practices on Wednesday as he's nursing an Achilles injury.

Pyro's Take:

The Panthers are being extra cautious with Stewart, who is close to full health. Stewart has played moderately over the course of training camp, but beat reporter Steve Reed thinks the wet field held Stewart out of Wednesday's practices. "The fact it rained at both practices and the field was very wet might have had something to do with Stewart sitting out," he said.

Bears' RB Jones is a "gem" expand +

Chicago Bears beat writer Brad Biggs said that backup RB Kevin Jones has been "one of the gems of camp" so far.

Pyro's Take:

While Jones and starting RB Matt Forte will not become DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, they will develop into one of the fiercest run tandems in the league. Jones will get a decent amount of carries this year to spell Forte.

Panthers' Smith back at practice expand +

The Carolina Panthers got a nice surprise Friday morning when WR Steve Smith returned to practice four days after injuring his shoulder.

Pyro's Take:

According to the AP, Smith was dressed in full pads and ran drills with the other receivers. It's still not clear if Smith will play in the Panthers preseason game against the Giants on Monday, but this is good news for Smith and fantasy owners alike.

Browns' Davis missing practice due to dental work expand +

Cleveland Browns rookie RB James Davis has been missing from camp the past few days, and it was just revealed yesterday that he has been getting dental work done and should be back soon.

Pyro's Take:

As beat writer Daniel Wolf puts it, Davis has "been outstanding at camp." We're not sure if its wisdom teeth, cavities, or whatnot, but hopefully he can get back on the field and earn himself a roster spot.

Jones lights up Cowboys offense expand +

Dallas Cowboys RB Felix Jones only had 24 total yards in the team's first preseason game, but owner Jerry Jones had strong praise for him. "Felix Jones put it in a different light when he got in the game."

Pyro's Take:

This much we knew, but it's reassuring hearing it from the owner of the team. Jones will be used a lot this season, and the Cowboys realize he will give the offense an explosive feel when he's on the field.

Barber will be Cowboys' main threat in running game expand +

According to Dallas Cowboys beat writer Charean Williams, RB Marion Barber will be "both the starter and the closer for the Cowboys. He also will be used on the goal line."

Pyro's Take:

This is a boost for Barber, as backup RB Felix Jones is looking strong thus far during training camp. Barber is stronger than Jones and he's a good runner, so he's an obvious choice for the goal-line carries. Keep this information in mind when trying to decipher the Cowboys running attack.

Cowboys' Choice's shoulder okay expand +

Dallas Cowboys RB Tashard Choice was held out of practice Wednesday because he felt major pain in his shoulder. However, the MRI revealed no structural damage.

Pyro's Take:

This appears to be just a minor injury, and Choice should be back on the field within the next couple of days.

Lions' RB Morris not playing today expand +

Detroit Lions backup RB Maurice Morris is out of the team's first preseason game this afternoon with a hamstring injury.

Pyro's Take:

Morris has been in and out of practice several times over the past few weeks. He has only practiced one day in the last week, so this is something to monitor as preseason progresses.

DeShawn Wynn moving ahead of Brandon Jackson expand +

Green Bay Packers' RB DeShawn Wynn has moved up ahead of Brandon Jackson to No. 2 on the depth chart according to beat writer Greg Bedard.

Pyro's Take:

Both Wynn and Jackson have missed some time in the past few weeks due to various injuries, but it appears as if Wynn has the lead here. We'll see what happens after the Packers play a few preseason games.

Westrbook returns to practice but is limited expand +

Westbrook returned to practice this weekend but was limited. LeSean McCoy has been getting all of this reps in August and has been looking as good as billed.

Pyro's Take:

This situation is stinking of a RBBC. It's one thing if the Eagles don't have other options, but they do. McCoy is a 21 year old Westy clone. We are bumping Westy down.

Pending a physical, the QB formerly known as Brett Favre will join the Minnesota Vikings. expand +

Way to go, Butt! Good luck, buddy!

Pyro's Take:

Hopefully we get some more tears at his press conference announcing that mowing his lawn got old after two weeks.

Jamaal Charles doing well catching balls out of the backfield expand +

Todd Haley has been particularly pleased with Jamaal Charles' ability to catch passes out of the backfield and will probably continue to feature him on third downs.

Pyro's Take:

Charles is explosive. If we were sitting on LJ as an RB2, we would not hesitate to cuff him to Charles in about the 9th or 10th round.

Parker wants third-down job back expand +

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Willie Parker has been working hard to get his third-down back status up and running again. Parker only caught three balls out of the backfield last year, while Mewelde Moore tied for fourth on the team with 40 receptions. "That was my main focus in the off-season, just work on my hands and give me some plays in the open field one on one vs. a linebacker or one on one vs. a cornerback. That's what I wanted to do and that's what we're planning to do this season."

Pyro's Take:

Fast Willie P. was hampered by injuries most of last year, but that isn't the reason why FWP wasn't the main man. In 2008, the Steelers made Rashard Mendenhall the first running back drafted in the first-round since they took Tim Worley out of Georgia back in 1989. The Steelers brass would love to see that pick work out for them, so they seem to be pushing Parker out of the mix a bit as FWP sits in a contract year this year. We're guessing that the third-down role stays as Moore's in 2009 as the Steelers put their plans to infuse Mendenhall more into their game-plan to work.

Ronnie Brown shows his stuff while Ricky loses ground expand +

Miami Dolphins starting RB Ronnie Brown had himself a nice preseason game against Carolina Saturday night rushing the ball seven times for 31 yards while adding three receptions for 43 yards and a TD. Brown's backup, Ricky Williams, ran for 21 yards on just three carries and caught one ball for seven yards.

Pyro's Take:

Ronnie put up 74 yards of combined offense in just one quarter of action against the Carolina first-team defense. It looks as if the reports about Brown being back to form are true, which doesn't bode well for the 32-year old Ricky Williams this season. These two should still be handcuffed together on draft day, but it looks as if the Miami RBBC might be leaning a little more towards Brown's favor this season.

Seahawks part ways with goal-line specialist TJ Duckett expand +

After inking Edgerrin James to a deal, T.J. Duckett was deemed expendable by GM Tim Ruskell.

Pyro's Take:

This bozo just paid Duckett a $2.5 mill roster bonus in the off-season. Why not keep him around? Well, after bumping Orange Julius down, we are going to bump him back up. It's possible that the 'hawks have plans to use Edge sparingly in short-yardage situations - something he can still do effectively, and keep Julius as their "in-between the 20's" RB. There is still potential for a RBBC, so we are not going to put Julius back to where we had him. He's also getting knocked off our sleeper list in light of the last few days of news out of Seattle.

Ravens' Ray Rice was full-time guy with starters in MNF preseason game expand +

Rice received all of the carries in the first quarter with the starters, including a three-yard TD run in an "and goal" situation.

Pyro's Take:

McGahee ran with the 2nd teamers and McClain received a couple of carries out of the same backfield with Rice.

Rice has been on our sleeper list from day one. We still expect this to be a RBBC, but if Rice can emerge as the goal-line guy, he will return owners a huge ROI on draft day.

Jerome Harrison rides bike at practice, James Davis stepping up expand +

Cleveland Browns RB Jerome Harrison has been riding a bike on the sidelines during practice the past couple of weeks. It's unclear exactly what the injury is and when it occurred.

Pyro's Take:

The Browns may have a running back controversy on their hands. Jamal Lewis has been unimpressive this preseason, and isn't getting any younger. At the same time, the guy who was supposed to be stealing carries from Lewis this season has been injured the past few weeks. What's more is that in Harrison's absence, the back who has been the most outstanding thus far is rookie James Davis, who many are saying should take over for Jamal Lewis sometime during the regular season, if not to begin the season. Whatever happens in this situation, stay away from Cleveland RBs in your upcoming drafts.

Shaun Hill tweaks his back in practice Tuesday expand +

San Francisco 49ers recently appointed starting QB Shaun Hill tweaked his back in practice on Tuesday and is now questionable to play Saturday in the Niners preseason game against Dallas. Hill threw just one pass in Wednesday morning's practice before having to leave the field.

Pyro's Take:

This news won't affect coach Mike Singletary's decision in making Hill his starting QB, but it doesn't bode well for the cohesiveness of the team heading into the regular season. If Hill can return to action quickly, the offense shouldn't be affected in any way, but if he is out for a significant amount of time, expect the Niners to look rusty come Week 1 with whichever QB they throw out there. For now, keep Hill as a low-end backup fantasy QB on your cheat sheet and we'll update you with his progress as it comes through.

Edgerrin James to "complement" Julius Jones in backfield expand +

Seattle Seahawks head coach Jim Mora explained to reporters after Wednesday's practice that Edgerrin James would complement Julius Jones in the backfield, but that Julius would remain the "workhorse" back.

Pyro's Take:

Whatever role Edge ends up playing on this team, whether it's as a 3rd down back or involved as a full-out RBBC, Julius Jones' fantasy value just took a big hit. With T.J. Duckett in the mix, Jones would have been assured of around 20 carries a game. Now that Edge is around, that number is sure to decrease. James is only two years removed from a 1,200 yard, seven TD season. Our advice would be to handcuff these two together at all costs, or simply stay away from the Seattle situation altogether.

Willie Parker, Santonio Holmes both questionable for Saturday night's game expand +

Pittsburgh Steelers starters RB Willie Parker (hamstring) and WR Santonio Holmes (back) were both listed as questionable for Saturday night's game against Buffalo.

Pyro's Take:

FWP has been sitting out practice all week, and though the injury is not considered serious, the Steelers will probably be cautious with the smallish Parker. Holmes should be fine and again, coach Mike Tomlin is likely just playing it cautious with Holmes.

Parker likely to sit out Saturday night's game expand +

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall will likely get the start Saturday night because Willie Parker has not practiced all week due to a hamstring injury. "We'd like to get an extended look at Rashard Mendenhall whether Willie plays or not," coach Mike Tomlin said.

Pyro's Take:

The role Mendenhall will be playing this year has yet to be determined, as FWP is still the starter and Mewelde Moore the third-down back. Both Parker and Mendenhall are coming off of injury-plagued seasons, and though Parker will start games in the backfield, the Steelers will likely use these two in a RBBC this season. Mendenhall remains a necessary handcuff to Parker on draft day.

Bengals' rookie Bernard Scott looks to have the backup RB slot locked up expand +

Bernard Scott passed up Dorsey and Justin Leonard on the depth chart as the prime backup to Cedric Benson.

Pyro's Take:

We have been laughing at the notion that Brian Leonard would last as the backup RB on any pro team... even the Bengals. Bernard Scott has the talent to even supplant Benson at some point. We are bumping him up as of this newsbreaker.

Peyton Hillis appears to have a lock as the 2nd string RB expand +

Peyton Hillis ran for 24 yards and a touchdown on seven carries and caught two balls for 21 yards in Sunday's preseason game which brings his preseason total to 25 touches - more than Knowshon Moreno, Correll Buckhalter, or LaMont Jordan. Hillis took multiple short-yardage carries including a 2 yard TD on Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

He is looking like the handcuff to have to Moreno this year. Moreno will start when he returns to full health, but Hillis appears ready and able.

Reggie Bush to play Thursday night? expand +

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton said he hopes to play RB Reggie Bush a series or two in the Saints final exhibition match on Thursday night.

Pyro's Take:

We're not entirely sure this is the smartest move, but you gotta play this kid at some point we guess. On the flip-side, the injury-prone running back is just as likely to get injured tying his shoes as he is during a game, so wouldn't you want to at least save him for a game that actually matters?

Raiders starting tailback to be named next week expand +

Oakland Raiders head coach Tom Cable told reporters on Wednesday after practice that he will name his starting running back next week after seeing what happens in their final preseason game.

Pyro's Take:

The Raiders still have Justin Fargas listed atop the team's depth chart, but that's bound to change as Fargas won't be suiting up for that last preseason game. Darren McFadden's versatility and game-breaking abilities give him the edge over Michael Bush, though Bush should still get 10-15 touches a game. Handcuff these two together regardless of who comes out on top.

Pierre Thomas still sitting out practice expand +

New Orleans Saints RB Pierre Thomas' availability for Week 1 against the Lions is in question as he continued to sit out practice on Monday recovering from a sprained MCL in his right knee.

Pyro's Take:

This is starting to not look very good at all for the up-and-coming running back. Just last week, the team was claiming Thomas was on pace to be ready for the first game, but now it looks like he might miss that first game altogether. If Pierre doesn't practice the next couple of days, you might want to look to your next best option at RB for Week 1 action.

Cadillac now in the driver's seat expand +

The latest depth chart for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has RB Cadillac Williams listed as the starting tailback. Derrick Ward was listed as the backup while Earnest Graham was sitting third.

Pyro's Take:

If the Bucs plan of going with a 2-2-1 RBBC sticks, then does it really matter which running back slots in where? In the world of fantasy, this situation is referred to as 'sewage overflow' and should be avoided at all costs.

Pierre Thomas' new injury required stitches expand +

New Orleans RB Pierre Thomas apparently suffered a cut that required stitches while climbing a fence recently, but head coach Sean Payton said that the injury was "not real significant." Thomas was also seen limping with his knee wrapped in the locker room after practice on Monday.

Pyro's Take:

The chances of seeing Thomas take the field in Week 1 are getting slimmer and slimmer, but we'll hold off on saying to bench him outright until later in the week. The Saints come back to practice on Wednesday, so we'll see where the young running back is then.

Justin Fargas still not practicing expand +

Oakland Raiders running back Justin Fargas missed practice again on Monday and hasn't practiced now for the past three weeks.

Pyro's Take:

Fargas was still listed as the starting tailback on the last depth chart, but that should change when the Raiders come out with their new one on Tuesday. Expect Justin to be listed as the third man on the totem pole after missing so much of camp.

Bulger has aching back after loss to the 'Skins expand +

St. Louis Rams quarterback Marc Bulger took a hit on a slide in the third quarter Sunday which left him with an aching back after the game. Bulger ended up needing treatment from the team's medical staff and his status for next week is unknown.

Pyro's Take:

If it's not one thing with this guy, it's another. Back, finger, mangina, whatever. He's fantasy crap, and should stay on the shit-heap until every other QB is either hurt or taken by another team.

Adrian Peterson limited in practice on Wednesday expand +

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was limited in practice on Wednesday due to a back injury.

Pyro's Take:

Maybe if the Purple Jesus didn't have to carry the offense on his back so much, this wouldn't be a problem. Hey Favre, think you could go for a little more than the 132.5 yards/game you're currently at?
Peterson should be fine and ready to roll for your fantasy team again on Sunday.

Peterson calls back injury "not a big deal at all" expand +

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson, who was limited in practice yesterday, said on Thursday that his back injury is "not a big deal at all".

Pyro's Take:

We didn't think it was, but still, any little scare with AP is a big scare to fantasy owners. He should be fine to go on Sunday against the 49ers, but we'll continue to update you on his back situation as the week rolls on.

Wynn backs into third-down role again expand +

Packers running back Brandon Jackson experienced a setback with his ankle during jog-throughs and missed practice on Thursday as a result.

Pyro's Take:

Not sure how many chances DeShawn Wynn needs to take that third-down back job for good, but here's one more for ya buddy!
Neither is worth a fantasy spot.

Brandon Jackson has setback, misses practice Thursday expand +

Pyro's Take:

Not sure how many chances DeShawn Wynn needs to take that third-down back job for good, but here's one more for ya buddy!

Houshmandzadeh back at practice in full Thursday expand +

After not practicing at all on Wednesday, Seahawks wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh (back spasms) was back working in full with the team on Thursday.

Pyro's Take:

Housh would normally be a good play against a suspect Bears pass D, but if Hasselbeck can't go, we wouldn't suggest T.J. as any more than a WR3 and would probably go with whatever other option you might have.

Moss sits out practice, listed as questionable expand +

Patriots wide receiver Randy Moss (back) unexpectedly sat out practice on Friday and turned up on the injury report listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Falcons.

Pyro's Take:

We're guessing that they are just giving the veteran a little rest before the big game, but you never know with Belichick and the Pats. Check back Sunday morning to find out if there's anything to this situation.

Randy Moss limited in practice Thursday expand +

Patriots all-world wide receiver Randy Moss (back) was limited in practice today, though he said that his back was feeling better than it did in the game last Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

Moss should be good to go on Sunday, but don't be shocked to see him be a bit hesitant out on the field against an ass-kicking defense like the Ravens. That doesn't mean to sit him on your fantasy football bench by any means...

Mike Goodson still not practicing yet expand +

Panthers rookie running back Mike Goodson missed another practice on Thursday dealing with the concussion he suffered in Week 3.

Pyro's Take:

We thought the youngster would be back by now, especially since the team just had a bye, but concussions can be tricky. His fantasy football value is still as a deep handcuff in case of injuries.

LB Junior Seau re-signs with Patriots expand +

With the Patriots defense in desperate need of a jolt, Bill Belichick and company decided to re-sign 12-time Pro Bowler LB Junior Seau to the team.

Pyro's Take:

We've seen how much difference a 40-year old former player can make to a team (was Favre ever a Former player?), so the signing can't be too bad. He likely won't be any more than a backup, however, with LB Jerod Mayo back and healthy.

Burleson limited in practice Wednesday expand +

Seahawks wide receiver Nate Burleson was limited in practice on Wednesday due to back injury.

Pyro's Take:

Burleson has been a major surprise this year, which has led to him being picked up and started regularly in most fantasy football leagues. Check back with us later in the week on his status for the upcoming game against the Cardinals.

Burleson limited again on Thursday expand +

Seahawks wide receiver Nate Burleson (back) was limited again at practice on Thursday.

Pyro's Take:

Burleson is averaging 17.6 fantasy points in the two games Hasselbeck completed this season, and over his last 9 games with Hasselbeck at QB, Burleson has scored 9 TDs. This looks to be a good fantasy football weekend for him as well against a terrible Cardinal pass D.

Harvin comes back to practice on Thursday expand +

Vikings coach Brad Childress said Vikings receiver Percy Harvin (shoulder) was "semi-limited" in practice on Thursday and that he did "most of everything". "Hopefully (Harvin) takes another step tomorrow," Childress said.

Pyro's Take:

Good news for fantasy football owners of the all-purpose rookie after he missed practice completely on Wednesday. Check back to see if you can get him into your lineup on Sunday.

Manningham injures back in loss expand +

Giants wide receiver Mario Manningham left the game against the Saints on Sunday with an injured back, but said today that he's fine and will practice this week.

Pyro's Take:

After his breakout performance back in Week 2, Mario has come down to Earth with the rest of us. He can still be used as a WR3 on your fantasy football team, but don't go expecting those 10-for-150 yard games anymore.

Schilens to make his debut Week 7 expand +

When asked about the status of wide receiver Chaz Schilens for Week 7, Raiders coach Tom Cable said “Chaz Schilens (foot) will be back and ready to go.”

Pyro's Take:

That is just wonderful Tom. Too bad you start a quarterback that couldn't hit a horse in stride if he tried. Schilens, or any Raiders player for that matter, should never get a start on your fantasy football team.

Cotchery returns to practice Wednesday expand +

Jets wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery (hamstring) returned to practice on Wednesday after missing last week's loss to the Bills.

Pyro's Take:

Mark Sanchez is plenty happy about that. The rookie QB has done nothing since Cotchery went down, so this news might boost the Dirty One's confidence. Check back later in the week to see if you can get Jerricho back into your fantasy football lineup this weekend.

Manningham practices on Wednesday expand +

Giants wide receiver Mario Manningham (back, ribs) practiced with the team on Wednesday, but he might have been limited in the portion not available to the media.

Pyro's Take:

Manningham had four catches for 50 yards and a touchdown before getting injured last week. He's played well in his sophomore season, so check back to see if you can get him into your starting fantasy football lineup against a weak Arizona pass D this weekend.

Felix Jones back at practice expand +

Cowboys running back Felix Jones (knee) was back at practice on Wednesday. There were questions whether he would practice on the wet playing surface or not because of his sprained knee, but those questions were quickly answered.

Pyro's Take:

Jones may be the most explosive back of he, Barber, and Choice, but has likely fallen to third on the depth chart. He'll get a few carries throughout the game, but it's tough to know where he fits in on your fantasy football squad right now until we see what the Cowboys plan is going forward.

Ahman Green will not play in Week 7 expand +

Newly signed Packers running back Ahman Green will not play in Week 7 against the Browns.

Pyro's Take:

Green still needs to get into football shape, so expect Brandon Jackson to continue to work as the third-down back for at least another week or two. When Ahman is ready, he'll likely have more fantasy football value than Jackson.

Willie Parker still battling turf toe expand +

Steelers running back Willie Parker is still having problems with his turf toe injury. "I'm not all the way back," said Parker. "I'm not Willie Parker, I'm not myself right now."

Pyro's Take:

FWP (Fast Willie Parker) is nowhere close to the FWP of old right now, and coach Mike Tomlin knows it. Parker can barely be used as a flex play on your fantasy football team right now.

Nicks starting to get more playing time love expand +

Giants wide receiver Mario Manningham (back, ribs) practiced fully again on Thursday and looks to be good to go against the Cardinals on Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

Manningham has played above expectations this year, but rookie WR Hakeem Nicks is starting to make a name for himself as well. Both receivers are playable on your fantasy football team this weekend in what could turn out to be a shootout a la last week's game against the Saints.

Manningham healthy, good to go expand +

Manningham slated to play Sunday expand +

Giants wide receiver Mario Manningham (back, ribs) is being listed as probable on the injury report but practiced in full on Friday and is expected to play against the Cardinals this weekend.

Pyro's Take:

Manningham can be used as a low-end WR2 or WR3 on your fantasy football team this weekend against the swiss cheese pass D they have in Arizona.

Coffee goes back to backup role expand +

49ers running back Frank Gore is healthy and was declared active for the game against the Texans today. Gore will start in the backfield with Glen Coffee on the sidelines backing him up.

Pyro's Take:

Gore should be inserted back into your starting fantasy football lineups immediately if you have him. Put his handcuff Coffee back on your bench.

Gore ready to come back from injury today expand +

49ers running back Frank Gore is healthy and was declared active for the game against the Texans today. Gore will start in the backfield with Glen Coffee on the sidelines backing him up.

Pyro's Take:

Gore should be inserted back into your starting fantasy football lineup immediately if you have him. Put his handcuff Coffee back on your bench.

Donald Brown injures shoulder but will be okay expand +

Colts rookie running back Donald Brown injured his shoulder against the Rams on Sunday, but thinks he'll be back for Week 8. "I'll be all right," he said. "It's something I've had before in college. I know how to handle it. I'll be back," said Brown.

Pyro's Take:

Brown had just two carries before leaving, but they were runs of 45 and 13 yards to give him a career high 58 yards on the day. He looks better than Addai, but Addai still has the backfield upper-hand as both are mere flex plays on your fantasy football team.

Calvin Johnson still a no-go at practice Tuesday expand +

Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson (knee) was still a non-participant at practice on Tuesday. His return is as of yet unknown.

Pyro's Take:

This is taking a lot longer than anyone suspected for Megatron to get back out on the field. We know it's tough to think about trading one of your prized possessions, but you might want to start feeling out your league while your WR1 still has value... Stay tuned.

Clowney misses practice with ankle injury expand +

Jets wide receiver David Clowney missed practice on Wednesday with an ankle injury.

Pyro's Take:

With Jerricho Cotchery expected back on Sunday, Clowney goes back to punchline status. He did, however, fill in admirably for two of the three games Cotch missed.

Pierre Thomas still stuck in RBBC expand +

Saints running backs Mike Bell and Pierre Thomas continue to be used in a platoon situation, with Thomas taking most of the first half snaps and Bell taking the second half. During last week's game, Bell was in for just one snap in the first half compared to 18 snaps in the second.

Pyro's Take:

The RBBC is working well for the Saints, but is a complete nightmare for fantasy football owners of either back. Depending on the match-up, both RBs can be used as either a RB2 or a flex option on your fantasy team.

Bell and Thomas continue to platoon expand +

Saints running backs Mike Bell and Pierre Thomas continue to be used in a platoon situation, with Thomas taking most of the first half snaps and Bell taking the second half. During last week's game, Bell was in for just one snap in the first half compared to 18 snaps in the second.

Clowney back at practice Thursday expand +

Jets wide receiver David Clowney (ankle) was back at practice on Thursday.

Pyro's Take:

With Jerricho Cotchery back, Clowney can sit on your fantasy football bench until another injury forces him into the starting role again.

McFadden seen jogging at practice Friday expand +

For the first time since his knee surgery, Raiders running back Darren McFadden was seen doing some light jogging and agility work on the side at practice Friday.

Pyro's Take:

He still won't be back until Week 10 at the earliest, but at least we know he's alive now. Keep him at the end of your fantasy football bench for now.

Clowney listed as questionable expand +

Jets coach Rex Ryan says that he expects wide receiver David Clowney (ankle) to play on Sunday despite being listed as questionable on the team's injury report.

Pyro's Take:

We expect as much as well, but with Cotchery back, Clowney returns to the WR3 slot and is no longer a viable fantasy football option.

Has Moats earned the starting job? expand +

When Texans running back Steve Slaton lost his fifth fumble of the season in the first quarter yesterday, that was all coach Gary Kubiak needed to see to pull him in favor of RB Ryan Moats. In the post-game press conference, however, Kubiak implied that Slaton will still be involved in the offense next week: "I told Steve in the locker room to get his chin up. This team needs him playing well and making plays and I'm expecting him to come right back next week and help us," said Kubiak.

Pyro's Take:

The team DOES need Slaton, because even though Moats did the trick this past Sunday, he doesn't have near the skills Slaton does and is too small to carry a full load every week anyway. Slaton's fantasy football value took a hit, but not so much that he can't still be used.

Has Slaton fumbled his starting job away? expand +

Jamaal Charles will get first shot to start expand +

Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles will get the start in Week 9, but it seems coach Todd Haley is ready to take RB Kolby Smith off the PUP list and give him a chance to back Charles up.
“I’m optimistic about having the opportunity to see him play,” Haley said.

Pyro's Take:

Which of these backs will come out on top remains to be seen, but Charles will get the first shot regardless of his lack of size. He's very good catching passes out of the backfield, so that could be the difference. Charles is worth a roster spot on your fantasy football team right now, but keep an eye on Smith in case he can't carry the load.

Kolby Smith likely to come off PUP this week expand +

“I’m optimistic about having the opportunity to see him play,” Haley said.

Driver expected to be fine for Week 9 expand +

Despite a sore neck from a big hit last Sunday, Packers wide receiver Donald Driver (stinger) is expected to be back practicing this week and starting against the Buccaneers on Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

Driver is tough as nails and has only missed five games over the past nine years. He'll play, and should be in your fantasy football lineup as he goes against a horrid Tampa Bay defense this weekend.

Donald Brown practices Wednesday expand +

Colts running back Donald Brown (shoulder) practiced on Wednesday and was not listed on the team's injury report.

Pyro's Take:

Brown was inactive last week, so it's a little surprising he's not on the injury report. Joseph Addai didn't do a whole hell of a lot with Brown out, so the Colts could really use him back. He'll be a decent flex option for your fantasy football team this week if he plays.

Watson limited on Thursday expand +

Patriots tight end Ben Watson (back) was limited in practice on Thursday, but is still expected to play this Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

Watson could be a decent start for your fantasy football team this weekend as the Pats go up against a Miami pass D that ranks in the lower third of the league.

Ben Watson limited again expand +

Patriots tight end Ben Watson (back) is being listed as questionable on the team's injury report after going through yet another limited practice on Friday.

Pyro's Take:

Watson could be a decent fantasy football play this weekend against a weak Dolphins secondary if he plays. Check back Sunday morning to see if the big guy gives it a go.

Stafford probable on injury report expand +

Lions rookie QB Matthew Stafford (knee) was limited in practice all week but is listed as probable on the injury report and should start against Seattle on Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

Stafford could be a decent QB2 option this week, especially if he has his star receiver Calvin Johnson back. Keep that in mind when setting your fantasy football lineup this weekend.

No timeline for Westbrook, but might return to practice Wednesday expand +

According to Eagles coach Andy Reid, running back Brian Westbrook (concussion) should be ready to return to practice on Wednesday, but that he will be cautious and won't force a timeline.
"If he has [headaches], then I’m obviously going to go on the conservative side of that,” Reid said. “He had tests done, and everything else. Try to take every precautionary measure possible. But I’m not going to stick him out there if he has the headaches, even if the tests were positive.”

Pyro's Take:

Westbrook missed Sunday night's game because he experienced a bit of a headache on Friday, so Reid decided to be cautious. Our guess is the worst is over, but check back with us throughout the week to see if the all-purpose back can return to your fantasy football lineup next weekend.

Gage sits out practice with full-body soreness expand +

Titans wide receiver Justin Gage (back) sat out Wednesday's practice with full-body soreness from falling to the turf after a circus catch last Sunday. Both he and coach Jeff Fisher expect him to be able to play Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

Gage should be able to play on Sunday, but probably shouldn't be in your fantasy football lineup against a tough Buffalo secondary.

Marshall sits out practice with back injury expand +

Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall sat out practice on Wednesday with an apparent back injury.

Pyro's Take:

We didn't see anything happen on Monday night, so we doubt it's anything serious. Check back later in the week to make sure he can be kept in your fantasy football lineup this weekend.

Marshall back practicing on Thursday expand +

Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall was back at practice on Thursday after resting a sore back yesterday.

Pyro's Take:

Marshall was likely just resting up for this weekend's game against the Redskins, so have no worries in getting him into your fantasy football lineup this Sunday. You might want to check back just to be sure however.

Sammy Morris sighting on practice field Friday expand +

Patriots running back Sammy Morris (knee) returned to practice with the team on Friday and is listed as doubtful on the Week 10 injury report.

Pyro's Take:

Morris won't be playing on Sunday night, but it's looking like he'll be back for next week's game against the Jets. Slide him up a couple spots on your fantasy football bench.

Finley ruled out for Sunday expand +

Packers tight end Jermichael Finley (knee) missed practice again on Friday and has officially been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Cowboys.

Pyro's Take:

Bummer. The Pack could have used him in this tough match-up, but will have to wait til next week to get the young pass-catcher back. Keep him on your fantasy football bench for another week.

Gage inactive as expected today expand +

Titans wide receiver Justin Gage (back) is inactive for the game against the Bills on Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

Gage will be out a couple of weeks as the fractures in his back heal. He won't need surgery, however, which is always a good thing.

Brandon Marshall active and starting expand +

Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall (back) is active and starting as usual against the Redskins today.

Pyro's Take:

Marshall was resting his sore back earlier in the week, but was never in danger of missing this week's game. He's become a must-start on your fantasy football team again, so don't hesitate getting him in your lineup today.

Donald Brown sore, but should be ok expand +

According to Colts President Bill Polian, running back Donald Brown's shoulder bothered him a bit during the game, but not enough to inhibit his play on the field. He also said that after the game, the rookie had a bit of a sore back but that it shouldn't be a problem.

Pyro's Take:

Joseph Addai is still getting the goal-line work and the bulk of the touches, so Brown's fantasy football value is still relegated to not much more than a handcuff or emergency flex play.

Ricky to take on full-time role with Ronnie Brown out expand +

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano confirmed on Tuesday that running back Ronnie Brown (foot) has been ruled out and will not play against the Panthers on Thursday.

Pyro's Take:

This news was expected. Ricky Williams becomes an extremely interesting fantasy football RB until Brown comes back, as he can confidently be started as an RB2 now in pretty much every league regardless of format.

Ronnie Brown already ruled out for Thursday game expand +

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano confirmed on Tuesday that running back Ronnie Brown (foot) has been ruled out and will not play against the Panthers on Thursday.

Pyro's Take:

This news was expected. Ricky Williams becomes an extremely interesting fantasy football RB until Brown comes back, as he can confidently be started as an RB2 now in pretty much every league regardless of format.

Cribbs misses Wednesday's practice expand +

Browns wide receiver Josh Cribbs (neck) missed practice on Wednesday, but coach Eric Mangini says he hopes to get him back on the field later in the week.

Pyro's Take:

The tests taken in the Cleveland Clinic came back negative, so all signs point to him playing this Sunday. He is not, however, worthy of a roster spot on your fantasy football team, even in a match-up against the lowly Lions.

Marshall returns to practice expand +

Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall (neck, back) returned to practice on Thursday after sitting out the previous day.

Pyro's Take:

Marshall is a lock to play, but his fantasy football value depends highly upon the health of QB Kyle Orton. If Orton plays, Marshall is a WR2 at worst. If Chris Simms is under center, don't expect much out of the big receiver, though he could still be used as a low-end WR3 or flex for your team.

Romo looks ok to start Thanksgiving Day expand +

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips told the media Monday that he is confident quarterback Tony Romo will be starting on Thanksgiving Day after taking a knee to the back last Sunday, while Romo himself said he "definitely will be playing" against the Raiders.

Pyro's Take:

Romo will be just fine for the Week 12 game, though he may not be a recommended fantasy football start against a tough Raiders secondary. Look for the Cowboys to run all day long against the 30th ranked rush D this Thursday.

Britt filling in just fine for injured Gage expand +

Titans wide receiver Justin Gage (back), who has been inactive the past two weeks, said that he doesn't know when he'll return, but that he's "made a lot of progress in the last week" and that after working hard lately, "the next step is being able to be back on the practice field."

Pyro's Take:

Rookie WR Kenny Britt seems to be filling in just fine for Gage, leading the Titan receivers in yards the past two games and hauling in his first TD reception Monday night. However, with Vince Young leading a rush-based team, neither Britt nor Gage are worth much in the world of fantasy football just yet.

Gage unsure when he'll return expand +

Titans wide receiver Justin Gage (back), who has been inactive the past two weeks, said that he doesn't know when he'll return, but that he's "made a lot of progress in the last week" and that after working hard lately, "the next step is being able to be back on the practice field."

However, with Vince Young leading a rush-based team, neither Britt nor Gage are worth much in the world of fantasy football just yet.

Romo ready to go on Thanksgiving expand +

When asked about his recent back injury on Wednesday, Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo (back) was quoted as saying, "We're improving each day and I think we'll be ready to go tomorrow for sure."

Pyro's Take:

Romo will be playing tomorrow, but we're still unsure whether his favorite outlet, Jason Witten, will be available. The Cowboys are likely to spend a bunch of the game running the ball, so Romo probably won't exceed his normal fantasy football expectations.

Steven Jackson sits out practice with back spasms expand +

Rams running back Steven Jackson sat out practice on Wednesday because he was suffering from spasms in his back. Coach Steve Spagnuolo said that Jackson will be evaluated every day while Jackson said that he is still “expecting to play Sunday”.

Pyro's Take:

Jackson has gone through this before, the latest being just a couple of years ago. He should be fine and ready to go Sunday, but check back with us throughout the week to make sure you can continue starting him as a RB1 on your fantasy football team.

Steven Jackson misses practice again expand +

Rams running back Steven Jackson (back spasms) missed practice again on Thursday, though coach Steve Spagnuolo still expects him to be able to start on Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

The Rams are optimistic about S-Jax playing, and so are we. He's a tough kid and shouldn't have a problem working through this. As always, he's a must-start on your fantasy football team.

Steven Jackson misses a third practice today expand +

Rams running back Steven Jackson (back spasms) missed yet another practice on Friday and is being listed as questionable on the team's injury report for this week. He'll end up being a game-time decision Sunday, as coach Steve Spagnuolo said today, “I trust Steven and what he can tell me.”

Pyro's Take:

We really weren't expecting this, as it was thought that SJax would be able to fight through his back pain. You'll have to check back here Sunday morning to see if you can get the RB1 into your fantasy football lineup or not.

Steven Jackson active and starting expand +

Rams running back Steven Jackson (back spasms) is active today and will make his normal start against the Seahawks.

Pyro's Take:

Jackson didn't practice all week, so he may not be at full strength, but he's still nice a RB1 for your fantasy football team today.

Romo's back no longer an issue expand +

According to Cowboys coach Wade Phillips, quarterback Tony Romo's injured back is doing just fine and will not be an issue heading into Week 13.

Pyro's Take:

Yep, sounds about right. He looked just fine in topping 300 yards last Thursday, so we expect him to be good for the game against the Giants this weekend.
Romo was embarrassed on national TV in their first match-up back in Week 2, so expect him to want to dish out a little payback this week. He'll be a solid fantasy football start against a beatable Giants secondary.

Gage could practice with scout team this week expand +

Titans coach Jeff Fisher is hopeful that wide receiver Justin Gage (back) can work with the scout team at practice this week after missing the past three games due to injury.

Pyro's Take:

All the players want him back too... even the rookie who looks to have taken his job, Kenny Britt, as Gage is known as a big brother to these guys. Even if he does return, he won't be worth more than a flex at best on your fantasy football team.

Jackson sits out Rams practice on Wednesday expand +

Rams running back Steven Jackson (back spasms) sat out practice on Wednesday in order to have a better chance of going against the Bears this weekend.

Pyro's Take:

Jackson shouldn't miss the game, but you might want to keep checking back with us this week before starting him on your fantasy football team this Sunday.

Gage practices with scout team on Wednesday expand +

Titans wide receiver Justin Gage (back) was back practicing with the team on Wednesday, though it was only with the scout team.

Pyro's Take:

There's no word as to whether or not he'll play this Sunday yet, but even if he does, he won't be worth more than a weak flex play on your fantasy football team.

Britt back to WR3 role when Gage returns expand +

According to Titans coach Jeff Fisher, wide receiver Justin Gage (back) will get his starting job back from rookie WR Kenny Britt when he returns from his injury.
"When Justin comes back and is 100 percent he is going to start, and Kenny is going to play," Fisher said. "That's just the way things are. Kenny was playing before Justin got hurt."

Pyro's Take:

Gage is a wily veteran, sure, but his upside and breakaway ability is nowhere close to that of the rookie. We expect to see Britt more than we saw him in the beginning of the year, but his fantasy football value does take a hit with this news.

Gage to get starting job back upon return expand +

Steven Jackson misses full week of practice expand +

Rams running back Steven Jackson (back spasms) missed the full week of practice and is being listed as questionable on the team's Week 13 injury report. According to coach Steve Spagnuolo, Jackson's back “just hasn’t calmed down to where we want it, and we certainly don’t want to reaggravate it.”

Pyro's Take:

This doesn't sound good for SJax, as Jackson was also quoted as saying that he is extremely concerned that the Chicago weather will have a bad effect on his back.
Check back with us Sunday morning to see if he is active against the Bears or not before sticking him in your fantasy football lineup.

Steven Jackson active and ready to go expand +

Rams running back Steven Jackson (back spasms) is active for the game against the Bears today and will start as usual.

Pyro's Take:

Get him in your fantasy football lineup if you took him out for any reason. He should have a lot of fun going up against a Lance Briggs-less Bears D today.

Kenny Britt to get another start expand +

Titans wide receiver Justin Gage (back) is inactive for the game against the Colts today. Rookie WR Kenny Britt will get the start again in his place.

Pyro's Take:

Britt has been playing really well of late, so go ahead and use him as a WR3 or flex on your fantasy football team today.

Gage inactive for Titans expand +

Titans wide receiver Justin Gage (back) is inactive for the game against the Colts today. Rookie WR Kenny Britt will get the start again in his place.

Pyro's Take:

Britt has been playing really well of late, so go ahead and use him as a WR3 or flex on your fantasy football team today.

Steven Jackson takes Wednesday off expand +

Rams running back Steven Jackson (back spasms) sat out practice Wednesday as he continues to try and rest up his back for the game against the Titans this weekend.

Pyro's Take:

SJax will almost certainly play on Sunday, as he has fought through his injury the past two weeks to suit up on game day. As usual, he is a must-start on your fantasy team regardless of the matchup.

Gage expected to return on Sunday expand +

Titans wide receiver Justin Gage (back) practiced in full on Wednesday and looks ready to return to the lineup this weekend against the Rams.

Pyro's Take:

If he doesn't suffer a setback in practice this week, Gage will be back and surely eat into the fantasy football value of rookie Kenny Britt. His return would help the Titans as a team, but he's still worth no more than a low-end flex on yours.

MJD returns to full practice today expand +

Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew (knee) was a full participant at practice on Thursday and is expected to start as usual against the Dolphins this weekend.

Pyro's Take:

MJD, as usual, is a fine RB1 for your fantasy football team this weekend. No worries about the injury as the team is just resting their star back.

Steven Jackson still sitting out practice expand +

Rams running back Steven Jackson (back spasms) was still on the sidelines at practice today.

Pyro's Take:

This is the same routine he's been going through for a couple of weeks now, and since he hasn't missed a game yet, we don't expect him to this week either. Check back just to be sure, but we're guessing it's safe to keep him in your fantasy football lineup for now.

Cadillac questionable now for Sunday expand +

The Buccaneers just added running back Cadillac Williams to their injury report as being questionable with a strained back.

Pyro's Take:

If Caddy can't go, it will be Derrick Ward and Earnest Graham carrying the load, which really shouldn't strike a lot of fear into the Jets. None of these guys is worth playing on your fantasy football team this weekend.

Steven Jackson listed as questionable expand +

Rams running back Steven Jackson (back spasms) went through a few plays in practice for the first time in weeks and is being listed as questionable on the team's Week 14 injury report.

Pyro's Take:

Jackson should play as usual on Sunday, but he might have a tough time finding holes against a strong Titans rush D. He's still a must-start on your fantasy football team this weekend.

Celek not practicing Wednesday expand +

After playing through a sore back and bad thumb last Sunday, Eagles tight end Brent Celek will be taking the day off from practice on Wednesday. Coach Andy Reid also said that Celek will be fine for Sunday's game against the 49ers.

Pyro's Take:

Celek has become a must-start for fantasy owners, so Reid saying that he'll be playing Sunday is a relief. Make sure you keep him in your lineup for the playoffs.

Steven Jackson takes Wednesday off expand +

Rams running back Steven Jackson (back spasms) took the day off on Wednesday in the hopes he can get in some practice time later in the week.

Pyro's Take:

Jackson doesn't seem to be missing games due to the injury, so it's safe to use the big RB on your fantasy football team this weekend.

Celek good to go for Week 15 expand +

Even though Eagles tight end Brent Celek (back, hand) is listed as questionable for the game on Sunday, coach Andy Reid said that he will be good to go against the 49ers this weekend.

Pyro's Take:

Celek is one of the top TEs in fantasy this year and shouldn't be benched just because he's a little dinged up. Make sure you have him in there.

Steven Jackson active and starting expand +

Rams running back Steven Jackson (back, illness) has been declared active and will start against the Texans today.

Pyro's Take:

The flu bug that hit the team seems to have come and gone as most of the regular players are active today. As usual, SJax is a must-start on your fantasy football team.

Thomas Jones returns to practice Thursday expand +

After being held out of practice on Wednesday for rest purposes, Jets running back Thomas Jones (knee) returned to take part in all the team and individual drills on Thursday.

Pyro's Take:

The 31-year old back is just fine and will be getting his normal workload against the Chargers this Sunday. Even though their rush D is nothing special, they don't let up many TDs, but the odds still say that Jones will hit paydirt at least once this Sunday. In fact, there were only six games this year in which TJ didn't find the endzone, including last week's playoff game.

Pro Bowl: SJax replaced by Frank Gore expand +

Rams running back Steven Jackson will be sitting out this year's Pro Bowl due to a herniated disc in his back. 49ers RB Frank Gore will be taking his place on the NFC roster.

Pyro's Take:

Jackson dealt with his back problem for the most of the season, so missing this game comes as no surprise. Even though Gore missed a couple of games this year, he still put up a career high in touchdowns this year (10 rushing, 3 receiving).

Super Bowl: Indianapolis Colts Injury Report expand +

The Colts list 21 players on their Super Bowl injury report. The list is as follows:
Questionable:
Donald Brown RB (foot), Melvin Bullitt DB (knee), Dwight Freeney DE (ankle), Jerraud Powers DB (foot),

Probable:
Joseph Addai RB (shoulder), Antoine Bethea DB (back), Gary Brackett LB (knee), Austin Collie WR (foot), Ryan Diem OT (elbow), Aaron Francisco DB (hand), Mike Hart RB (ankle), Ramon Humber LB (knee), Antonio Johnson DT (shoulder), Charlie Johnson OT (foot), Robert Mathis DE (shoulder), Jamey Richard OG (shoulder), Jamie Silva DB (hand), Jacob Tamme TE (ankle), Tony Ugoh OT (knee), Adam Vinatieri K (hip), Reggie Wayne WR (knee).

Pyro's Take:

The Colts biggest concern here is the injury to defensive end Dwight Freeney. If Freeney is hampered at all by that ankle and can't come off the line like he normally does, the Colts D would take a bit hit come Super Sunday. We should know more about his health later in the week as we approach the big game.

Super Bowl: New Orleans Saints Injury Report expand +

The Saints list 24 players on their Super Bowl injury report. The list is as follows:
Questionable:
Randall Gay CB (foot), Lynell Hamilton RB (ankle), Malcolm Jenkins CB (hamstring), Courtney Roby WR (knee), Jeremy Shockey TE (knee), Darren Sharper S (knee), Will Smith DE (groin), Zach Strief T (shoulder), Jonathan Vilma LB (knee)

Probable:
Jermon Bushrod T (thumb), Jonathan Casillas LB (ankle), Darnell Dinkins TE (foot), Sedrick Ellis DT (knee), Jahri Evans G (toe), Scott Fujita LB (knee), Jonathan Goodwin C (knee), Jabari Greer CB (hip/groin), Roman Harper S (shoulder), Bobby McCray DE (back), Robert Meachem WR (ankle), Lance Moore WR (ankle), Pierson Prioleau S (quad), Pierre Thomas RB (ribs), Usama Young S (hip).

Pyro's Take:

Most of these injuries have been cooked up in a crock pot filled with a whole bunch of bogus and served on a nice soft bed of horseshit, so don't go reading too much into this report. Shockey's injury might be the most worrisome for the Saints, but they've made do with TE David Thomas before, so even that isn't too big of a concern. Either way, the Saints have a whole week ahead of them to get completely healthy.

Super Bowl: Indianapolis Colts Final Injury Report expand +

The Colts list 20 players on their Super Bowl injury report. The list is as follows:
Questionable:
DE Dwight Freeney (ankle), DB Jerraud Powers (foot)

Probable:
RB Joseph Addai (shoulder), DB Antoine Bethea (back), LB Gary Brackett (knee), RB Donald Brown (foot), DB Melvin Bullitt (knee), OT Ryan Diem (knee), DB Aaron Francisco (hand), RB Mike Hart (ankle), DT Antonio Johnson (shoulder), OT Charlie Johnson (foot), OG Ryan Lilja (back), DE Robert Mathis (shoulder), OG Jamey Richard (shoulder), K Matt Stover (left calf), TE Jacob Tamme (ankle), OT Tony Ugoh (knee), K Adam Vinatieri (right hip), WR Reggie Wayne (knee)

Pyro's Take:

Freeney isn't the only point of concern for the Colts anymore, as Reggie Wayne came up gimpy towards the end of practice on Friday. Wayne walked to the training room under his own power after aggravating the same right knee that gave him problems during the season. His 'probable' listing is positive, but it still has to be a bit disturbing that it happened just two days before the game. Freeney, on the other hand, hasn't gone through a full practice in two weeks, but the coaches sounded optimistic in their final press conference that he'll play.
