Steve Slaton goes from 3rd round NFL pick to top 5 overall fantasy pick.
Pyro's Take:
We knew all along that too much stock was put in the NFL Combine, Slaton is a beast and will be receiving full time carries. Draft with confidence.

The Arizona Cardinals No. 3 receiver is likely to retain his punt returning duties, and he might return some kicks as well.
Pyro's Take:
Breaston hasn't exactly impressed on special teams, scoring just one punt return TD in 2 years. He's battling Safety Antrel Rolle as well as RBs Chris Wells and La'Rod Stephens-Howling for the job, but we expect him to retain it. Also, with J.J. Arrington gone, Breaston is also being considered as the top kick returner.
Second-year RB Steve Slaton gained nine pounds in the offseason as he bulked up for the Houston Texans.
Pyro's Take:
This shouldn't have a profound effect on his numbers. He wanted to get bigger so he can run better on the inside, but those carries figure to go to Chris Brown. Plus, Slaton figures to have that extra weight gone by the end of camp anyways.
Houston Texans RB coach Chick Harris expects to use Brown a lot in short-yardage situations to compliment the shifty Steve Slaton. "He's got a good sense of inside run skills, and he's a big 234-pound guy that can give us that added dimension of a hammer effect and then you have Steve coming in."
Pyro's Take:
If Brown can stay healthy, we like him to get a lot of goal-line carries. But we don't envision him having much of a year other than that due to the fantastic rookie season Slaton recorded last year.
First-round draft pick, WR Hakeem Nicks, has agreed to terms with the New York Giants, signing a five-year, $12.54 million contract.
Pyro's Take:
Nicks has looked sharp this first week of training camp, and he's a good bet to see a lot of snaps this year now with Plax gone and Steve Smith the Second as the No. 1 receiver.
New York Giants OL Adam Koets believes WR Steve Smith will have a breakout year, now that he's the No. 1 receiver. "Steve Smith is going to get more looks this year...and he's going to play really well."
Pyro's Take:
Smith led the Giants with 82 targets last year, and he should get around 100 this year with Plax gone. However, his diminutive stature ensures that Kevin Boss, Hakeem Nicks and others, will get more looks in the Red Zone than Smith. We think he'll be a No. 3/4 WR in most leagues.
During practice on Monday, Smith got tangled up with CB Chris Gamble in a one-on-one drill and went down hard on his right shoulder. He was carted off the field moments later for some tests (x-rays were negative) and was said to have been in some obvious pain. Smith was also considering going back to Charlotte for an MRI.
Pyro's Take:
If this injury ends up being any worse than the initial reports are making it sound, it would be a HUGE blow to the Carolina offense as their #1 WR would suddenly slip into the hands of resident Just For Men spokesman Muhsin Muhammad. On a side note, it's strange to see tough guy Steve on the losing end of a run-in with a teammate, but that karma sure is a bitch.
Arizona Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said that WR Jerheme Urban has, "had as good a camp as anybody...he's made a number of plays on the ball that were uncharacteristic of what he had done consistently."
Pyro's Take:
QB Kurt Warner also sung praise for the guy likely to win the No. 4 WR job over Early Doucet, saying, "the one thing I've seen in this camp is you can really start taking chances with Jerheme and you can feel comfortable with that." It's all positive and gushing news for Urban, but with guys named Fitzgerald, Boldin, and Breaston ahead of him, he'll struggle to put up significant numbers.
Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith, who injured his shoulder in Monday's practice, caught passes off to the side from a ball-boy on Wednesday.
Pyro's Take:
But there's a catch, Smith lobbed them back underhanded. Either way, it's good to see any range of motion in Smith's shoulder, and this injury doesn't appear to be that threatening. That sound you hear is John Fox exhaling.
Carolina Panthers coach John Fox said that he expects injured WR Steve Smith to be ready before week one. I'm sure he'll be ready at some point in the preseason. Whether we play him or not, I don't know about it."
Pyro's Take:
The All-Pro WR injured his shoulder in practice Monday while colliding with a DB, but it appears to be less serious than first thought. Even though he might not get any playing time during the preseason, it looks like he should be good to go for the opener.
The Carolina Panthers got a nice surprise Friday morning when WR Steve Smith returned to practice four days after injuring his shoulder.
Pyro's Take:
According to the AP, Smith was dressed in full pads and ran drills with the other receivers. It's still not clear if Smith will play in the Panthers preseason game against the Giants on Monday, but this is good news for Smith and fantasy owners alike.
Arizona Cardinals WR Steve Breaston sat out practice today with a sprained PCL and a bone bruise in his right leg. Head coach Ken Whisenhunt said that Breaston should be considered day-to-day at this point and didn't rule him out of the upcoming preseason contest against the Chargers this Friday.
Pyro's Take:
The Cardinals would sure like to see Breaston healthy, so they're not going to push him any more than necessary. PCL injuries are a bit tricky in that it sometimes takes a little while for them to feel 100%, but the Cardinals third nipple should be standing up straight again in no time.
Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith (shoulder) was not even in town for the Monday night preseason opener against the Giants.
Pyro's Take:
Smith is still on track to be ready for regular season play and might even get in for a few snaps during the final preseason game. Even though it was a surprise to see him back on the practice field last week, he's still not doing any contact drills as the Panthers are avoiding anything happening to their stud WR.
Beat reporter Kent Somers noted that in practice on Monday, August 17th, Arizona Cardinals WR Jerheme Urban was impressive and caught everything that was thrown his way. Somers also noted that Urban just might be the MVP of camp thus far.
Pyro's Take:
With Steve Breaston out with an injury, Urban must be eyeing his chance to work himself into that coveted WR3 spot in the Cardinals offense. If Urban can get himself to the point where both the coaching staff and Kurt Warner have trust in him, could it be possible for the Cardinals to put up FOUR 1,000-yard receivers on the year?!?! Not at all likely, but Urban's play is definitely a bonus going into the 2009 season.
Arizona Cardinals WR Steve Breaston, who sprained his right knee in the game against the Steelers, is expected to miss the Cards preseason game against San Diego Saturday night. Breaston hasn't practiced since sustaining the injury.
Pyro's Take:
Breaston had an outstanding season in 2008, but is one of our picks to be a bust this year. The star of camp thus far, WR Jerheme Urban, has stepped up his game in Breaston's absence and will take over the WR3 duties while Stevie recovers.

Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith will be making the trip down to Miami for the preseason game against the Dolphins Saturday night. Coach John Fox didn't state whether Smith would play or not calling him a game-time decision.
Pyro's Take:
Whether Stevie actually plays or not, this is still great news for the Panther faithful. Smith has been held out of contact drills since hurting his shoulder back on August 10th, so he likely won't be playing, but just having him back with the team going to games is a step in the right direction. Keep Smith marked as the sixth WR coming off the boards on draft day.
Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith (shoulder), RB Jonathan Stewart (Achilles), and WR Muhsin Muhammad (groin) all sat out the Panthers preseason match-up against the Dolphins Saturday night.
Pyro's Take:
All three players were on the field in uniform for pregame warm-ups, but got back into their street clothes for the game. Coach John Fox decided it would be better to rest the three starters instead of risk aggravating their respective injuries.

New York Giants WRs Domenik Hixon and Steve Smith came into camp as the first-team receivers and will leave the same way, despite Smith missing two weeks of practice due to knee injury.
Pyro's Take:
Nobody else in the Giants WR corps stood out enough to take the job, so Hixon and Smith will remain the starters for now. Rookie Hakeem Nicks probably has the most upside out of the group, with Ramses Barden being the most consistent and red-zone capable. Sinorice Moss, Mario Manningham, and Derek Hagan could all sneak into the mix as well. The Giants will most likely run a WRBC (wide receiver by committee) all year, so consider this your warning before drafting any of these guys.

Arizona Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin strained his right hamstring during practice on Tuesday and sat out Wednesday's practice as a result. Coach Ken Whisenhunt said that Boldin merely tweaked his hamstring and wouldn't rule him out for Friday's preseason matchup. He did, however, say that the team would play it safe with Boldin's injury.
Pyro's Take:
The Cardinals should play it safe with the stud receiver, as there's no need to go risking further injury to one of their starters. With Steve Breaston still out with a right knee injury, Jerheme Urban will likely take on the starting role alongside Larry Fitzgerald for Friday's game.

St. Louis Rams WR Donnie Avery took part in pregame warmups, but ended up sitting out the Rams preseason game Thursday night. Coach Steve Spagnuolo indicated that Avery was close to being ready to play, but had this to say about his star receiver: "If for some reason (Avery) felt great (in warmup), maybe we would've went with (him)," Spagnuolo said. "But at this point it didn't make sense to put (Avery) in a situation where (he) could get injured worse."
Pyro's Take:
Spagnuolo realizes his lack of depth at the WR position and made the correct call here. Avery is coming back from a stress fracture, an injury that tends to linger, so there was no reason to push the envelop Thursday night. However, that Avery could have played in the game if necessary has led us to bump him back up in our rankings.
Arizona Cardinals WR Steve Breaston was back out on the practice field Monday after dealing with a sprained right knee the past few weeks.
Pyro's Take:
The Cardinals are very happy to see their WR3 back as their WR corps is plagued by injuries at the moment. Though Stevie went off for 1,000 yards last year out of the role, we don't expect his production to be nearly the same in 2009 unless either Fitz or Boldin go down for an extended period of time. He will also be giving up some playing time to much improved WR Jerheme Urban this year.
Steve Slaton carried the ball 11 times for just 27 yards and a TD, and added three catches for 20 yards in the MNF preseason game.
Pyro's Take:
Chris Brown goal-line ball carrier my ass. Slaton will be a beast this season. Period.com
Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt decided on Tuesday that he will sit WR Anquan Boldin for the final exhibition match on Thursday. Boldin has been dealing with a hamstring issue since last Tuesday.
Pyro's Take:
Smart move by the Whiser. With third WR Steve Breaston having been injured for most of camp, and fifth WR Early Doucet recently injured as well, the Cardinals can't afford any more hits to their WR corps before the start of the regular season. Boldin should be fine for the Week 1 match-up against the 49ers.
