Pickups & Drops - After Week 3 / '13
Fred Jackson – RB – Bills
Fred Jackson is proving that it is always better to be the second back in the Bills offense. C.J. Spiller has had a real hard time being the lead back and only had 9 yards on 10 carries this week, before leaving the game with a knee injury. Jackson had 7 carries for 72 yards and added 4 catches for another 37 yards. It is not clear what the extent of the injury to Spiller is, but Jackson is going to continue to see carries when he is producing like he is.
Bilal Powell – RB – Jets
Bilal Powell got his chance to lead the way for the Jets on Sunday, and had a nice game. BP gas fuelled the Jets offense with 149 yards on 27 carries. Powell has been effective this season, and Chris Ivory had to leave this weeks game with a hamstring injury, but only had 5 yards on 4 carries before that. Bilal should continue to see more touches.
Johnathan Franklin – RB – Packers
The rookie saw the most action he has seen all year and had a good showing, until a big fumble cost the Packers the game. Franklin replaced James Starks who left the game with a knee injury and ran for 103 yards on 13 carries with a touchdown. The UCLA product also showed his effectiveness in the passing game with 3 catches for 23 yards. If Lacy remains sidelined with his concussion and Starks misses any game time Franklin could be a nice add.
Christine Michael – RB – Seahawks
Michael finally got see the field for the Seahawks, as they were blowing the Jaguars away early. Christine had 37 yards on 9 carries, but it was good for him to see the field and get a chance. Michael was one of our deep sleepers this year and we like all he has to offer. This is a reminder that his role is going to increase with the Seahawks.
Jacquizz Rodgers – RB – Falcons
Just another reminder that with Jackson out Rodgers is the guy. This week he had 86 yards on 18 carries and had 2 catches for 7 yards.
Santonio Holmes – WR – Jets
The oft forgotten man made a major reappearance this week with 5 catches for 154 yards and a nice 69-yard touchdown grab and run. Geno Smith is going to target Holmes, so he will have a chance to make plays, and this week he showed that he could still make the big play.
Josh Gordon – WR – Browns
Flash ahh…savior of the universe. Josh Gordon returned to the Browns after serving a 2 game suspension and what a return he had. Flash Gordon had 10 catches for 146 yards and a touchdown. With the Browns deciding to ship Trent Richardson to Indianapolis, Gordon is going to see more targets in this new Browns offense.
Nate Washington – WR – Titans
Nate “old man” Washington had a nice game this week with 8 catches for 131 yards. Jake Locker had a much better game and that development will result in more games like this for Titans receivers. Washington is that savvy veteran that is the modern day version of Derek Mason, and he is on the right team.
Nate Burleson – WR – Lions
The other Nate also had a good game on Sunday with 6 catches for 116 yards. The Lions and Matthew Stafford have continued to be a throw first team and Burleson is the only other receiver that has shown signs of life besides Calvin Johnson.
Stephen Hill – WR – Jets
Hill continues to make boneheaded plays, but he also makes some big ones. This week the Georgia Tech product had 3 catches for 108 yards and a touchdown. The development of Hill has taken awhile and he is still a work in progress, but he is also a big play guy and he is seeing a fair amount of targets with 23 through 3 weeks.
Jason Avant – WR – Eagles
Jason Avant is that Eagles player that seems like he has been there forever and is always making plays when you are rooting for DeSean Jackson to get the ball. This week he did it again to Jackson owners and had 5 catches for 87 yards with a touchdown. Just be aware that Avant is not going to get you many if any 100-yard games.
Sidney Rice – WR – Seahawks
Rice had been ineffective in the first 2 games this season, but he showed up in week 3 with 5 catches for 79 yards and 2 touchdowns. If Rice is available on the waiver wire he should be picked up.
Kendall Wright – WR – Titans
Wright had a steady game with week with 6 catches for 71 yards. The issues is still the same for this young receiver and that is that he does not get a lot of yards per catch (9.5 career average) or after the catch. Give me some YAC and you would be a better pickup.
Brandon LaFell – WR – Panthers
The Panthers second receiver has not lived up to the hype since taking over the role and finally made his case this week. LaFell had 5 catches for 53 yards and 2 touchdowns. The problem is still that he has trouble staying involved in the offense throughout the game and is still going to be inconsistent this season.
Scott Chandler – TE – Bills
Chandler who is known for being a touchdown scoring tight end did it again on Sunday, but also had 5 catches for 79 yards to go along with it. We are seeing the growth of E.J. Manuel and Chandler is a huge target who runs pretty well, and Chandler showed that he is fine after having ACL surgery in the offseason.
