Pickups & Drops - Week 2 / '13

james starks pyro character

James Starks – RB – Packers

Eddie Lacy took a massive shot in this game, and that opened the door for James Starks.  All he did was run the ball 20 times for 132 yards and a touchdown. He also added 4 catches for 36 yards.  In this league all it takes is an injury and an opportunity and Starks made the most of his today.

Austin Pettis – WR – Rams

Bradford is slinging the ball all over the field and the little owned Pettis was making all the plays today.  Pettis hauled in 8 catches for 78 yards and a touchdown.  It seems clear that the Rams are going to be a more pass oriented team this season and Pettis could turn into a nice bye week replacement player.

the black unicorn - bears

Martellus Bennett – TE – Bears

If your league has been sleeping on the Black Unicorn then wake up and take a ride on this pony.  Bennett went off on Sunday with 7 catches for 76 yards and 2 scores, including the game winner.

coby fleener pyro character

Coby Fleener – TE – Colts

Fleener finally looked like the player that was supposed to have all the chemistry with Andrew Luck.  The Stanford connection hooked up 4 times for 69 yards and a touchdown.  Coby is going to be a part of the redzone offense and should only get better as the season goes on.

de'andre hopkins pyro character

DeAndre Hopkins – WR – Texans

Here is another player that if for some reason your league is not aware of him, they soon will be and you need to grab him now if you can.  Hopkins was the leading receiver for the Texans with 7 catches for 117 yards and a beautiful toe tapping touchdown catch in overtime to seal the deal.  His catch before the touchdown might have been better leaping over a defender and snatching the ball out of the air.

terrence williams pyro character

Terrence Williams – WR – Cowboys

Williams did not have a good game in the season opener, but he showed some nice flashes in week 2 finishing with 3 catches for 28 yards.  Those numbers are not impressive by any stretch, but this tall and fast receiver is going to get plenty of 1 on 1 coverage will be a fantasy factor before too long.  T-Will has more upside than most of the receivers out there.

Ted Ginn Jr – WR – Panthers

Here is a blast from the past, but the past usually ended in a bust.  Ginn still has the ability to make some big plays and he had 3 catches for 62 yards and touchdown against the Bills.  There is not going to as much consistency with Teddy, and with how shaky the Panthers passing game has looked, I would look elsewhere for help.

Garrett Graham pyro character

Garrett Graham – TE – Texans

Dale Earnhardt Jr. continues to make plays for the Texans and this week had 3 catches for 30 yards and a touchdown.  If you are in a deep league and need some help at tight end Graham could be a nice pick if he continues to be effective in the redzone.

bernard pierce pyro character

Bernard Pierce – RB – Ravens

It has begun, as one of our sleepers on this season is going to his chance.  Ray Rice suffered a hip flexor and the extent of the injury is not known, but Rice also fumbled the ball.  Weekend at Bernie’s came in and ran 19 times for 57 yards and touchdown.  Pierce is now going to be a bigger part of the offense and should be picked up if available.

ben tate pyro character

Ben Tate – RB – Texans

Arian Foster was our biggest bust candidate and not only because of his injuries in the offseason, but because of Ben Tate.  Tate continues to eat into Foster’s production, and in reality looks like the better runner.  This week Tate toasted the Titans for 93 yards on only 9 carries.  Tate is going to see a more and more carries with games like this.  Sorry Arian.

eddie royal pyro character

Eddie Royal – WR – Chargers

Are you kidding me???  Eddie Royal went Royal Crown Cola on Sunday with 7 catches for 90 yards and an amazing 3-touchdown performance.  The Chargers lost Malcom Floyd to a neck injury, as he was carted off the field and Royal took advantage.  The Chargers like to throw the ball and Royal could be a nice pickup as he seems to have a nice chemistry with Philip Rivers.

philip rivers pyro character

Philip Rivers – QB – Chargers

Rivers is showing that he still has some gas left in the tank.  The sidearm slinger completed 36 of 47 passes for 419 yards and threw 3 touchdowns.  The amazing stat for Rivers is that he did not throw an interception.  Philip seems to like the Mike McCoy offense and showed his accuracy is not as bad as it looked the past 2 seasons.  If you need a QB and he is available, grab him.

Jacquizz Rodgers – RB – Falcons

Steven Jackson left the game with a thigh injury and Rodgers took over, but did not fair very well.  Quizz had 11 carries for 17 yards, but if Jackson misses any time there is no other option in Atlanta.

Jordan Reed – TE – Redskins

The rookie from Florida is starting to become a bigger part of the offense.  Reed had 3 catches for 18 yards and a touchdown on Sunday, but it looks like the Skins are trying to find more ways to get him involved.  Fred Davis has not impressed through 2 games, and Reed is going to see more snaps in the weeks ahead.

bilal powell pyro character

Bilal Powell – RB – Jets

The Jets are definitely not going to let Chris Ivory be a lead back for them, and Powell showed that he has a chance to be a nice complement.  Powell had 13 carries for 48 yards with a touchdown, and added 2 catches for 22 yards.  If you are in a deep league and need someone with a chance to put up points Bilal is worthy of a shot.

Charles Clay – TE – Dolphins

When Dustin Keller went down it was unclear who would step up and take hold of the tight end position, well the answer is Charles Clay.  Not Bill Clay, but Charles Clay had 5 catches for 109 yards and added a 1-yard rushing touchdown.  Tannehill seemed to have good chemistry with him and the tight end is big part of how the Dolphins want to attack on offense.

Knowshon Moreno – RB – Broncos

The speculation of who the lead back in Denver will be is over and it goes to the constant underdog, Moreno.  The resurgent Moreno had 12 carries for 93 yards and 2 touchdowns, while adding 3 catches for 14 yards. If he is available you need to grab him.  He blocks for Manning and is doing what Montee Ball was supposed to do.

Ace Sanders – WR – Jaguars

Ace is a rookie you need to keep an eye on, even though he is on the woeful Jaguars.  Col. Sanders had 5 catches for 64 yards in the game, and the fact that the Jags, which is what they are playing like, are always behind he will have chances.  Then there is the bad new for MJD who was injured in Oakland again, but that means that the Jaguars are going to have to lean on their passing game more.

WE TOLD YOU SO LAST WEEK

Andre Ellington – RB – Cardinals – We told you about Ellington last week and we knew what we were talking about.  Andre “Duke” Ellington was the most productive backup running back Sunday with 20 yards on 4 carries, but the Duke makes his mark in the passing game where he added 2 catches for 42 yards and a touchdown.  This kid is electric and is he has the potential to see 10-15 touches a game before too long.

E.J. Manuel – QB – Bills – Manuel was another hit as he went off against the Panthers completing 27 of 39 for 296 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception.  This kid has talent and he is showing early that he can make plays.  If you need a quarterback and he is there don’t wait.

Robert Woods – WR – Bills – As Manuel develops so will Woods, who had 4 grabs for 68 yards in week 2.  Woods is proving he is not lost in them, and he is going to be a guy who just puts up numbers each week, and it is only a matter of time before he has a breakout game.

Marlon Brown – WR – Ravens – Brown has locked down the spot opposite of Torrey Smith and had another solid performance in week 2 with 4 catches for 45 yards and a touchdown.  There are not many options to throw to in Baltimore so Brown will continue to see targets each week.
