Andre' Davis

Houston Texans

The Poor Man’s Hester

Andre Davis has made a name for himself as one of the fastest WRs in the league.  He came out of Virginia Tech with huge hype as the Browns took him in the 2nd round of the 2002 NFL Draft but has largely disappointed. He’s bounced around the league but it looks like he finally has a suitable home in the rising Texans.

This will be Davis’ 3rd year with Houston, and he’s mostly been utilized as a 3rd receiver and kick returner because of his blazing speed. But he isn’t just any old schmuck who runs his routes and is forgotten about. In 2007, he stepped in for the injured Andre Johnson, that’s Sir Andre Johnson to you, and over a seven game stretch he caught 23 passes for 447 yards and three touchdowns. Not too shabby for a high school soccer player.

But last year, Davis injured his finger, and although he played 12 games, he didn’t put up the numbers that the Texans were expecting. He returned three kicks for TDs in 2007, but none in 2008.  Also, his receiving production dropped off tremendously, as he only caught 13 passes for 213 yards and zero touchdowns – the primary reason for this was that ‘Dre missed no time.

Fantasy Outlook 2009

With last year’s numbers in mind, Davis is not a viable fantasy option for 2009. He’s never caught more than 40 passes in a season or had more than 600 receiving yards. His best seasons actually were his first two with the Browns, when he caught six and five TDs respectively, but since then he has failed to have a season with more than three scores. Davis is currently battling 3rd year pro Jacoby Jones for the 3rd receiver on the depth chart. Jones has only 18 catches in his first two seasons, so Davis has the edge in this one. However, Davis should only be drafted in the last round as a handcuff to ‘Dre given his success backing him up in ‘07.  Davis’ career 16.1 yards per catch average is an eye-opener.

Green

missed some games last year with a finger injury, but it looks like he’s 100% healthy and should be good to go for the season.

Breaking News

Andre' Davis works with first-team Wednesday expand +

With Andre Johnson sitting out practice on Wednesday with a bruised lung, Texans wide receiver Andre' Davis stepped in and worked with the first team opposite Kevin Walter.

Pyro's Take:

If Johnson can't go on Sunday (though he says he will), Davis will step in and start. Houston doesn't change a thing with Davis in there, so he could be a decent fantasy football play on Sunday with Matt Schaub being on such a tear.

Andre' Davis limited at practice Thursday expand +

Texans wide receiver Andre' Davis was limited at practice for the second consecutive day on Thursday dealing with the backlash from the concussion he suffered in Week 1.

Pyro's Take:

Whether Davis plays or not doesn't really matter for your fantasy team. He's not even worth rostering.

Andre' Davis ruled out for Week 2 expand +

Texans wide receiver Andre' Davis has been ruled out for the Week 2 game against the Titans.

Pyro's Take:

Davis can't shake the effects of the concussion he suffered last week, so he'll take a seat. This leaves the Texans pretty thin at the position as Kevin Walter is banged up as well. Expect Andre Johnson to get double-teamed every play this Sunday.

Andre' Davis still out of practice with concussion expand +

Houston Texans wide receiver Andre' Davis was still sitting out practice on Thursday recovering from the concussion he sustained during the game against the Jets in Week 1.

Pyro's Take:

We wouldn't say this is a shock as Davis got dinged pretty hard last Sunday. Coack Gary Kubiak said he was feeling better today, but wouldn't give any indication as to whether he would play Sunday or not.

Andre Davis to start for Texans on Sunday expand +

Houston Texans wide receiver Kevin Walter has been declared inactive for today's game against the Jets. Andre' Davis will start in his place.

Pyro's Take:

Davis won't be too shabby of a play if you are desperate. It's a great match-up for the speedy Andre' as the Jets will likely be triple-teaming Andre Johnson all day long.

With Walter uncertain, Andre Davis could get the nod expand +

The availability of Houston Texans wide receiver Kevin Walter for Sunday's game against the Jets is uncertain at this point. Walter has been dealing with a hamstring injury since the third preseason game.

Pyro's Take:

If Walter can't go, Andre Davis will step into the starting role for the week, which likely means triple-teams for Andre Johnson. Walter isn't quite a fantasy starter, but can be a real nice plug-in player when your studs are on their bye weeks. He'll be back sooner than later, and since you probably wouldn't have been starting him anyway (unless you got screwed at the WR position in your draft), there aren't any worries here.

Texans' WR Davis looking to secure No. 3 spot expand +

Houston Texans' WR Andre Davis is reportedly "hotter than the weather" in training camp as he looks to wrap up the No. 3 spot on the depth chart.

Pyro's Take:

Davis is battling with David Anderson for that position. Even though Anderson had a better year last season, Davis has been impressive thus far in the offseason and looks to the front runner ahead of Anderson.
