Snoozefest

Trying to make an Anthony Gonzalez player profile interesting is like whipping out your unit with 30 mph winds blowing in your face and trying to take leak without getting any on your Diesels.  It’s a bold task that takes much planning and forethought, but at the end of the day, it's just not possible.

If A-Gon was a politician, he’d be this…

and we’re the dude in white hair behind him.

Speaking of sleep – A-Gon was a “sleeper” heading into ’08, but did not quite deliver as one.  It was a reasonable assessment as he had averaged nearly 74 yards per game while scoring three TDs over the final five contests in the ’07 season.  His per game stats actually decreased in ’08 as Marvin Harrison, despite being a shell of his former self, was able to make it through much of the season and command his share of looks.  Gonzalez was the fourth option in ‘08 and caught an impressive 72% of passes thrown his way (59 catches on 79 targets); Peyton Manning had a very ordinary stat output relatively speaking.  Yes, 28 total TDs and just over 4,002 yards passing is ordinary for him.

His Game

He stands at an un-imposing 6’0 and 193 pounds.  He isn’t overly speedy clocking his 40 yard dash at 4.46.  He has sticky hands and for however ordinary his top speed is, he plays the game quicker than that.   He changes direction well and has great acceleration out of his cuts.  He is decent after the catch but won’t break many tackles.   None of that crap matters, though.  He will be a starting receiver on a team QB’d by Peyton Manning.   He’s going to be more productive.

2009 Fantasy Outlook

"Mystery" Marvin Harrison has been cut in an effort to salvage $6 million in salary and Anthony Gonzales slides un-challenged into the #2 WR slot opposite Reggie Wayne.    If there is a double team to be had in the secondary, it’s not going to be on A-Gon.  He perhaps becomes Manning’s third favorite target between Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark, but third on Peyton Manning’s team is better than second on pretty much 29 other teams.  So we consider him as a sleeper candidate again this season and we think he will just make it as a fantasy starter (10 man league or higher) in all formats.   He isn’t much of a red-zone target but Manning has never struggled hitting his receivers in stride in between the 20’s.  Make him the 55th WR off of draft boards this summer.

Injury Report

Yellow

He played all 16 games in ’08, but has had a mysterious “leg” injury lately and the Colts have all but dodged questions relative to his status. If it happens to be his knee, be worried. This will all be reported in our Newsbreakers, and his status here could change if it ends up being minor.

Breaking News

Anthony Gonzalez placed on injured reserve expand +

The Indianapolis Colts placed wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez (knee) on injured reserve today, thus ending his 2009 NFL season.

Pyro's Take:

Just when it looked like Gonzo might be ready to return, poof! He's gone-zo. With Pierre Garcon playing so well this year, Gonzalez may go back to the slot in 2010 instead of taking over that coveted outside position like he was going to before his injury. He's still worth keeping on your roster if you're in a fantasy dynasty league, but he might not have the same value as before.

Anthony Gonzalez to practice on Wednesday? expand +

Colts President Bill Polian said in his radio program that wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez (knee) went through a light practice on Monday and will practice in full on Wednesday.
“He’ll practice fully on Wednesday,” Polian said. “That should tell the tale. We’ll see how he comes in on Thursday. I would say he’s an end-of-the-week, game-time decision. He would like to get on the field and we would like to get him on the field for as many snaps as we can if we can do that on Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

Our guess is that the Colts would like Gonzo to give Pierre Garcon a bit of a rest this Sunday so that he can be fresh for the playoffs, so be wary of this situation as the week goes on and how it will affect your fantasy team.

Anthony Gonzalez still missing practice expand +

Colts wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez (knee) is still sitting on the sidelines recovering from his mid-season surgery.

Pyro's Take:

Gonzo is expected to be back sometime around mid-December, but we'll see about that. He should probably be on the waiver wire in your fantasy football league.

Anthony Gonzalez still out expand +

Colts wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez (knee) still has no timetable for when he will begin practicing again and is ruled out for this week's game against the Texans.

Pyro's Take:

At this rate, Gonzo just might be out for the whole year. You can safely drop him from your fantasy football team now if you haven't already.

Anthony Gonzalez close to practicing again expand +

Colts wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez (knee) is out for the Week 11 game against the Ravens, but NFL.com's Jason La Canfora says he is scheduled to begin practicing again next week and has a slight chance to return to action in Week 12.

Pyro's Take:

After being out with a knee injury the whole year and eventually having surgery and you think he might play in Week 12 after one week of practice? Nah.
However, being a Colts receiver, his return to action is intriguing. Keep him on the end of your fantasy football bench if you haven't dropped him yet, and think about a pickup if you have the room.

Anthony Gonzalez undergoes arthroscopic right knee surgery expand +

Colts wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez (knee) underwent arthroscopic right knee surgery yesterday to clean out loose particles and is expected to miss at least another 2-3 weeks.

Pyro's Take:

Finally the truth is revealed! It's been suspected all along that there was more wrong with Gonzo's knee than was told, so at least we're cleared up on the secrecy now. If you haven't dropped him from your fantasy football squad yet, do so now and grab whatever is out there on the waiver wire that can help your team.

Anthony Gonzalez not close, getting a second opinion expand +

Colts coach Jim Caldwell revealed today that wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez (PCL-knee) isn't as close as they thought he was to returning and that the third-year WR will go seek out a second opinion on his injured knee.

Pyro's Take:

With the Colts being relatively secretive about the injury up until now, it doesn't surprise us to hear this news. You might want to consider severing ties with him if you've been holding out for a comeback. Your fantasy football team probably can't handle the occupied roster spot at this time of the year.

Is Anthony Gonzalez ready to practice? expand +

According to Colts coach Jim Caldwell, it will be up to both the team doctors and how wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez (knee) feels that will determine whether or not he begins practicing full tilt again this week.

Pyro's Take:

Not the grandest vote of confidence there Jim. Not that they wouldn't like Gonzo back at some point, but the Colts seem to be doing just fine without him sitting at 7-0 on the season. Keep the fantasy football disappointment on your bench for future value purposes.

Anthony Gonzalez out for Week 8 expand +

Colts wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez (knee) is listed as being out for the game against the 49ers on the team's Week 8 injury report.

Pyro's Take:

Yeah, we know. Keep him on your fantasy football bench yet another week.

Anthony Gonzalez absent again expand +

Colts wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez (knee) missed practice again on Thursday and most likely won't play against the 49ers on Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

His chances just went down to 1%. Sit him on your fantasy football bench another week.

Anthony Gonzalez still being kept out of practice expand +

Colts wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez (knee) continues to miss practice and looks highly doubtful to be active on Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

We'd give Gonzalez about a 5 percent shot at playing Sunday, so keep the young WR2 on your fantasy football bench for yet another week.

Anthony Gonzalez out as expected expand +

Colts wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez (knee) was declared inactive for the game against the Rams today.

Pyro's Take:

Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon will have their fantasy football value sky-high for at least one more week, so if you have either one of them on your team, don't hesitate to start them against a weak Rams D.

Anthony Gonzalez close to returning? expand +

According to coach Jim Caldwell, Colts wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez (knee) is close to returning to practice. "It's kind of a day to day thing," Caldwell said. "He's been feeling really good. He has not obviously practiced to this point, but we do feel that he's going to start shortly. When that is, I'm not certain."

Pyro's Take:

We'll believe it when we see it. Keep him hanging on your fantasy football bench for now as all Colts wide receivers are worth their weight in gold.

Anthony Gonzalez misses practice again Thursday expand +

Colts wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez (knee) missed practice again on Thursday and likely will be inactive against the Rams on Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

Gonzalez won't play this weekend, and it remains to be seen whether or not he'll play next week as well. Keep him benched on your fantasy football team and check back with us later to find out his updated status.

Anthony Gonzalez still not participating in practice expand +

Colts wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez (knee) is still sitting out practices as he did not suit up and practice with the team on Wednesday.

Pyro's Take:

When he'll be back is anybody's guess. No official word has ever been given on the severity of his PCL injury, so there's no guideline to know when he might return. Keep him at the end of your fantasy football bench for just a little while longer.
