Brady Quinn

Denver Broncos

Not the Best

Brady Quinn is not even the best football player in his family, which isn't shocking after a quick peek at his NFL stat-line.  No, the title belongs to his sister's husband, Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk, who would beat up Quinn any day in the backyard Thanksgiving touch football game (only problem is if you touch Quinn, he'll crumble quicker than coffee cake). The low point for Brady came on draft day, when he sat in the Green Room for hours longer than he expected for his name to be called.  Once projected to be the first pick overall, the Browns probably felt fortunate that he was sitting there at #22.  Wonder how they are feeling now?  Notre Dame can only do so much for you.

His Game

Admittedly, and we say this with clenched teeth, Quinn has some game. He did win the Maxwell Award as the nation's top college football player (but he shouldn't have). He did set numerous passing records from the school that brought us Joe Montana. However, over two years in the NFL, he's played in four games, thrown as many TDs as INTs (two) and sports a 65.8 QB rating.  In other words, the guy has so far validated the 21 GMs that took a pass on him in the 2007 draft.

Huge Bust

Quinn was quoted by the Onion before the 2007 NFL Draft allegedly saying:

"While it's true I have impressive arm strength, and that I'm willing to stand up in the pocket against the rush, the fact remains that my lack of downfield accuracy gets me in trouble on the deep throws and my field vision is suspect," Quinn told draft evaluators from the Raiders, Browns, and Cardinals."Combine that with the enormous starting bonus I'll receive and the tendency for teams to try and develop quarterbacks long after they should give up, and I really just have 'bust' written all over me."

Could this be why he spent so much time in the Green Room?

2009 Fantasy Outlook

Quinn was named the starter midway through the 2008 season, but then broke the tip of his finger, needed surgery, and was out the rest of the year. In comes new coach Eric Mangina-ini, and immediately he declares an open quarterback competition between former Pro-Bowl QB Derek Anderson and former longest-time-a-guy-spent-in-the-green-room QB Brady Quinn. Mangini said he won't decide until the last pre-season game who is going to start, but did indicate in June that Quinn had the early edge. Regardless, Quinn won't be a huge fantasy factor in 2009. Given that he spent his rookie season watching Derek Anderson pretend to be a pro-bowl QB, and then got injured three games into taking over once Anderson's charade was exposed, the unknown combined with his college credentials make him a late round flier.

Contract

Signed a five-year, $9.125 million contract in 2007 that included $7.75 million guaranteed.  Another $11 million was available if Quinn took more than 55% of the snaps in each of his 1st two years or at least 70% in his 3rd season (this season).  So with that on the line, Quinn will be motivated to step up:

2009 - $655,000

2010 - $700,000

2011 - $700,000

2012 - Free Agent

Broke the tip of his right index finger in week 12 and got surgery to fix it. After finally being given a chance, he went right down after a few games.

Breaking News

Holmgren has made it clear that the Browns will be looking to upgrade at QB expand +

Cleveland beat writer Tony Grossi reports that the Browns will be looking to make changes at QB. Derek Anderson is due a $2 million roster bonus - that's not happening, and Brady Quinn has not shown so much as a flash of brilliance, unless you count the Detroit game.

Pyro's Take:

No brainer. Grossi went on to speculate that McNabb/Kolb and Hasselbeck are logical options for the Browns to pursue. I think this team needs to bring in a veteran and then make a good draft pick for the QB of the future - unless they could pry Kolb away from Philly (unlikely).

Quinn put on IR, done for the season expand +

Browns quarterback Brady Quinn (foot) has been put on injured reserve, thus ending his 2009 NFL season.

Pyro's Take:

Oh boy oh boy oh boy! The world gets to watch QB Derek Anderson run the Cleveland offense once again, which is basically akin to watching "The Hangover", "Wedding Crashers", and "Old School" back-to-back-to-back. Thank goodness for late-season entertainment.

Quinn gets thrown under the bus, as well he should expand +

Browns wide receiver Josh Cribbs told the media on Wednesday that the hook-and-ladder call that got him injured last Monday night was all QB Brady Quinn's call and that coach Eric Mangini had nothing to do with it.

Pyro's Take:

Wow is Quinn in trouble. Not only does the meanest defense in the league (Ravens) want to kick his ass, but now his own receivers want a piece of him, too.
Brady's lucky his team has already played Baltimore twice this season or we'd expect him to lose his "pretty boy" status real quick... and still might if his teammates have anything to say about it.

Quinn still the Browns starter expand +

Browns quarterback Brady Quinn still has the backing of coach Eric Mangini as he will continue to be the starter on Sunday against the Lions despite his awful game last week against the Ravens.

Pyro's Take:

You know what, it just doesn't matter with this team. Their offense is so bad that we highly doubt even Peyton Manning could make it better. Neither Brady Quinn nor Derek Anderson are worth a piss, in real life or on your fantasy football team.

Ravens basically place bounty on Quinn's head expand +

After throwing an interception Monday night, Browns quarterback Brady Quinn laid a chop-block on Terrell Suggs which has put the Ravens linebacker out of action for at least four weeks. Fellow defensive player Ray Lewis came back at Quinn with this:
"Heck yeah it was a cheap shot... I want to see if he gets the same fine I got or even higher. Now this man is out four or five weeks because of some baloney like that."

Pyro's Take:

If the Browns had any inkling of grooming Brady for the starting job next year, they may want to think again. Our suggestion would be to trade Quinn to the NFC now for whatever they can get as the Ravens will be looking for blood over this one.

Brady Quinn named the starter for Week 10 expand +

Browns coach Eric Mangini has decided to switch quarterbacks once again and named Brady Quinn the starter for Monday night's game against the Ravens.

Pyro's Take:

The Big Man-gina should have made this move weeks ago, but honestly, it's like choosing between a Ford Pinto and a Yugo in that you know that neither one is taking you anywhere. Regardless, Quinn deserved another chance, but definitely not on your fantasy football team.

Mangini to announce starting QB Wednesday expand +

Browns coach Eric Mangini said on Monday that he will wait until Wednesday to announce his starting QB for Week 10, but that he pretty much already knows who it will be.
"I know where I'm headed, but we'll talk about that on Wednesday," he said. "I haven't talked to the quarterbacks about it yet, so that's part of it."

Pyro's Take:

The time has passed where certain monetary escalators would have kicked in if Brady Quinn were to start, so we're torn as to who the Big Man-gina will choose on Wednesday. Our bet is that he still backs Derek Anderson, but that's simply because we know what an idiot he is. Neither QB has any fantasy football value regardless.

Is it finally time for Brady Quinn again? expand +

After yet another disgusting performance by Browns quarterback Derek Anderson, coach Eric Mangini still would not commit to making a change at the position. "We'll look at it. At everything. We'll look at every single position," Mangini said when asked who would start after the team's Week 9 bye.

Pyro's Take:

Anderson has played in six games this year and in just one of those games did he end up with a QB rating over 51.0. The big Man-gina has been adamant about not playing Quinn since yanking him in the middle of the Week 3 game, but something's gotta give. Either way, neither one is worth a second of your fantasy football time.

Quinn remains in the Dawg Pound doghouse expand +

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Browns coach Eric Mangini is not considering making a move at the quarterback position because he already knows what Brady Quinn can (and can't) do.

Pyro's Take:

While we tend to agree that Quinn is not the answer, Anderson has gone above and beyond the call of duty to show that he certainly is not the answer either. So once again, what's a big Man-gina to do?

Quinn still patiently waiting his turn expand +

Browns coach Eric Mangini stated for the record on Monday that he is "not looking to make a move [at quarterback]" despite Derek Anderson's second straight horrible outing.

Pyro's Take:

Brady Quinn has to be pulling his hair out over this. Anderson has proven that he's obviously not the answer for the Browns, yet the big Man-gina still sticks with him. Fantasy football should not even be mentioned with these two QBs.

Browns say they're not looking to trade Quinn expand +

Both Browns quarterback Brady Quinn and coach Eric Mangini claim they no nothing about a trade of any kind. "We're not looking to move Brady Quinn," said Mangini, while Brady says "I have a contract with the Browns and I intend to play that out."

Pyro's Take:

Quinn claims he put his home up for sale because he's a bachelor and can't deal with the upkeep of his 5-bedroom house. His fantasy football value still stands at None at this point.

Brady Quinn puts Cleveland home on market expand +

Browns quarterback Brady Quinn seems to believe that he'll be traded before the trade deadline on October 20th as he put his Avon Lake, Ohio, home up for sale Tuesday.

Pyro's Take:

Either that or he's just as normal as you or I in that he has no desire whatsoever to live around Cleveland. Quinn has every right to be pissed after losing his job three weeks into the season to a guy who went 2-of-17 on Sunday. He still has no fantasy football value however.

Quinn still playing backup in Cleveland expand +

Despite putting forth one of the worst performances in QB history, Browns quarterback Derek Anderson will remain the starter according to coach Eric Mangini.

Pyro's Take:

"DA will continue to start," Mangini said without hesitation. "Some of the throws could've been better..." Granted, your receivers sucked badly Mr. Man-gina, but you didn't even pick this guy in the first place, and now you want to keep him as the starter?
No Browns player should be on your fantasy football team, save for maybe Jerome Harrison.

Quinn to remain the backup to Anderson expand +

Browns coach Eric Mangini is satisfied enough with the play of quarterback Derek Anderson to keep him the starter. "I thought he played really well. In terms of managing the game, there were some times where he checked a few things and got us into a good play," Mangini said.

Pyro's Take:

Whether it be Tweedledee or Tweedledum, love the one you're with, eh Man-gina?
Neither Anderson nor Brady Quinn are worth the piss in the pot in your fantasy football league.

Quinn demoted after 0-3 start expand +

Cleveland Browns head coach Eric Mangini has named Derek Anderson his starting quarterback for the Week 4 game against the Bengals. "Giving Derek the opportunity is something I think will help us offensively," said Mangini.

Pyro's Take:

The Browns have one offensive touchdown in 2009 and the second fewest points (29) in the league (Rams, 24), so something needed to be done. Anderson, however, is not the answer. Not for the Browns, and not for your fantasy football team.
