2009 Fantasy Outlook

Brandon Jackson was drafted high (2nd round in 2007) but has displayed a very one-dimensional rushing style since entering the league.  One cut and he's coming at you and there's nothing much to fear.  He has thus far proven not strong enough to move piles.  He doesn't block well, either.  He's got potential, but none of it has been realized.  He's a decent handcuff to Ryan Grant in the later rounds of your draft.

Contract

Brandon signed a four-year, $2.805 million contract back in July '07 that included $1.14 million guaranteed plus a $760,000 signing bonus.  Beyond that, there are also performance-based escalators in the final year.  Below is the outline of the remaining years:

2009 - $460,000

2010 - $550,000

2011 - Free Agent

Injury Report

Yellow

Brandon has had various injuries over his two-year career thus far, including two concussions. He hasn’t shown that he can stay healthy for more than a handful of games in a row, so definitely be cautious in drafting him.

Breaking News

Brandon Jackson demoted to third string expand +

Packers running back Brandon Jackson has been passed up on the depth chart by recently signed RB Ahman Green. Ahman will take over the duties as the third-down back previously held by Jackson.

Pyro's Take:

There was never anything particularly special about Brandon, so this news comes as no shock to us. Ahman is said to be in incredible shape, and since Ryan Grant is a terrible third-down back, Green might be worth an insurance pickup for your fantasy football team.

Ahman Green will not play in Week 7 expand +

Newly signed Packers running back Ahman Green will not play in Week 7 against the Browns.

Pyro's Take:

Green still needs to get into football shape, so expect Brandon Jackson to continue to work as the third-down back for at least another week or two. When Ahman is ready, he'll likely have more fantasy football value than Jackson.

Packers sign RB Ahman Green to one-year deal expand +

The Green Bay Packers signed running back Ahman Green to a one-year contract according to a source close to the team. It was also said that Green will make his way onto the practice field later today.

Pyro's Take:

DeShawn Wynn was just said to be out for one month, but will likely be put on injured reserve due to the Green signing. Brandon Jackson will be the backup RB for one more game, but that might be it for him. Ahman is now the handcuff to Ryan Grant for your fantasy team.

RB Ahman Green to sign with Packers? expand +

Former NFL running back Ahman Green is reportedly telling his old buddies on the Packers that he already received a playbook from the team and that his deal to sign with Green Bay is basically done.

Pyro's Take:

With DeShawn Wynn (knee) possibly going on injured reserve and Brandon Jackson both below average and injury-prone himself, the move makes sense on all counts. Ahman's fantasy football value would come as a handcuff to Ryan Grant.

Brandon Jackson resumes role as backup to Grant expand +

Packers running back DeShawn Wynn has been declared inactive for the game against the Lions today. Brandon Jackson will resume his role as the backup RB to Ryan Grant today.

Pyro's Take:

Jackson is a better option than Wynn when both are healthy anyway, so this is good news for the Pack. Jackson, however, shouldn't be used on your fantasy football team unless absolutely necessary.

Brandon Jackson good to go expand +

Packers running back Brandon Jackson (ankle) practiced in full every day this week and is good to go for Sunday's game against the Lions. He's listed as probable on the team's injury report.

Pyro's Take:

Jackson could actually see some decent playing time this week if the Packers take care of the Lions early on in the game. We'd still wait a couple games before using him as a flex play.

Ryan Torain works out for Packers on Tuesday expand +

Former Broncos running back Ryan Torain is working out for the Packers on Tuesday.

Pyro's Take:

Brandon Jackson is back in the mix after recovering from a bum ankle, but neither he nor DeShawn Wynn have been much in the way of a backup to Ryan Grant in their careers. We'll see if the Pack finally found a guy worth throwing in behind Grant.

Brandon Jackson returns to practice Monday expand +

Packers running back Brandon Jackson (ankle) returned to practice on Monday after missing the first four games of the season.

Pyro's Take:

He's a far better 3rd-down option for the Pack than DeShawn Wynn, who has been awful in taking over for Jackson. If there's a handcuff to be had on your fantasy football team for Ryan Grant, it's Jackson.

Brandon Jackson inactive on Sunday expand +

Packers running back Brandon Jackson has been declared inactive for the game against the Rams on Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

This was expected as Jackson is still working to come back from his ankle injury. Ryan Grant should get a major load today against a crap Rams squad and should be a great fantasy start this week.

Brandon Jackson has setback, misses practice Thursday expand +

Packers running back Brandon Jackson experienced a setback with his ankle during jog-throughs and missed practice on Thursday as a result.

Pyro's Take:

Not sure how many chances DeShawn Wynn needs to take that third-down back job for good, but here's one more for ya buddy!
Neither is worth a fantasy spot.

Brandon Jackson returns to practice expand +

Green Bay Packers running back Brandon Jackson returned to practice on Wednesday. Jackson missed the first two games of the season thus far and his status for this week's game is unknown.

Pyro's Take:

DeShawn Wynn has been taking the place of Jackson on third downs, but has yet to do much in that position. Look for Jackson to take over Wynn's spot when he returns, though neither is worth a fantasy spot on your team.

Brandon Jackson misses practice again expand +

Green Bay Packers running back Brandon Jackson sat out practice for the second consecutive day on Thursday.

Pyro's Take:

Looks like DeShawn Wynn will be the third-down back again on Sunday. Wynn only got four touches last week, so Ryan Grant looks like a good fantasy play against the Bengals in Week 2.

Brandon Jackson still sitting out practice on Wednesday expand +

Green Bay Packers backup RB Brandon Jackson was still sitting out practice on Wednesday with an injured ankle.

Pyro's Take:

Brandon has been out for too long now to be depended on this Sunday against the Bears, so look for DeShawn Wynn to take his place as the RB2 in Week 1.

Brandon Jackson held out of practice on Monday expand +

Green Bay Packers backup RB Brandon Jackson was still being held out of practice on Monday after missing the past week and a half due to an ankle injury.

Pyro's Take:

If Jackson isn't healthy enough to practice this week, DeShawn Wynn will move into the backup role for Sunday's opening game against the Bears. Ryan Grant may end up with a few more carries than expected in Week 1.

DeShawn Wynn moving ahead of Brandon Jackson expand +

Green Bay Packers' RB DeShawn Wynn has moved up ahead of Brandon Jackson to No. 2 on the depth chart according to beat writer Greg Bedard.

Pyro's Take:

Both Wynn and Jackson have missed some time in the past few weeks due to various injuries, but it appears as if Wynn has the lead here. We'll see what happens after the Packers play a few preseason games.
