Braylon Edwards

New York Jets

Greasy Fingers or Sweaty Palms?

How about both? This guy sucked Linda Lovelace style last year.  55 receptions for 873 yards and 3 TDs with a league leading 16 drops in 16 games is embarrassing.    16 drops on 55 receptions?  Huh?  The Browns were awful last season across the board, scoring a measly 31 points in their final six games, and Braylon was a huge reason why.  His size, speed, and athletic ability have never been questioned; he has world class talent.  His dedication and sexual orientation have been called into question lately, though.

Zoolander?

If what Will Demps said is true, Braylon needs a lobotomy.  There is no middle ground, here.  Besides how utterly lame it is that he wants to pursue a career in male modeling, he is inquiring about the prospects...DURING A GAME!  A game in which his team was getting spanked!   With a mind towards winning the next "Derelicte" instead of his next football game, the dropped balls are starting to make more sense.

The drops didn't just start last year, either.    In '06 he was ranked 10th in dropped passes (8 total) despite not even being in the top 20 "Targets" stats for receivers (120 targets in '06 ranked him at 22nd overall).  In '07, he was thrown to 153 times and managed to drop a league leading 12 balls.  Makes one wonder just how long Edwards has had Mugatu on his mind.

We watched Braylon kill many fantasy teams last year as he was a second round draft pick in most drafts and was one of the bigger busts on record

big busts at WR

If all else fails, he can always put the blindfold back on:

Oye, this guy is painful.

Wolverine or Jag?

Braylon's biggest fan is himself -there is no doubt.   He has a jaguar tattooed on his left arm, so we're going to go on ahead and anoint this guy a new nickname, "Jag".  He's always posing with his shirt off, a jag move by all accounts.  His beard looks likes it's minimally a 45 minute process each day.   We'd bet anything this guy has a yellow Ferrari.  Yellow cars are for dudes with small units - and no, we don't have a chart for that claim.  Anyone that wears #1 as a wide out on the University of Michigan is more a "Jag" than a Wolverine.     Here Braylon seeks to mix his favorite two past-times....

2009 Fantasy Outlook

"Jag" will bounce back this year.   How can he not?  We think he will drop fewer balls given his contract situation.  He needs to prove to the league that he cares about football even a little.   His greed and desire to make it in Hollywood or the New York model scene is enough to get him to concentrate on pulling in that hefty contract that a bounce back season can provide.   Kellen Winslow was recently traded to Tampa, so a main alternative target is now gone.   The morning after a night of partying with his homies to celebrate his $4 million roster bonus, Donte' "Beecher" Stallworth got drunk, didn't hire a designated driver, and ended up running someone over and killing them, so he's going to jail for 30 days with a couple years of house arrest to boot (he can work, though) - This loser has been trying for seven years to live up to his billing back in the 2002 draft, and we don't expect him to do it this year.  Amazing how many of rich folk prefer to drive themselves and ruin their lives.

We suppose this could work both ways for "Jag" (more double teams), but it should at least result in more targets - and he is athletic enough to beat them regularly.  "Jag" should henceforth be taken as the 53rd WR off of draft boards this summer.  He could end up delivering you MUCH higher returns than that as well.  You just need to decide whether you want a guy on your team that would rather play for Mugatu than Mangini.

Contract

Braylon is entering the final year of his rookie contract and has plenty to play for.  Given that he is apparently more pre-occupied with his modeling career than his football career, he will need to showcase his talents in 2009.  His contract situation is fantasy gold:

2009 - $4.55 million

2010 - Free Agent

Breaking News

Braylon to remain a Jet post-2009? expand +

Jets wide receiver Braylon Edwards recently addressed his upcoming restricted free agency by saying he'd like to stay with his current team. "I like the city, I like everything about the situation," Braylon said.

Pyro's Take:

Considering his restricted free agent status, if he really wants to remain in a Jets jersey, the Jets can retain him with a one-year tender of about $5 million. Without a doubt, his fantasy football value has gone up with the move to New York, but something tells us this diva might have $$$ on his mind...

Braylon practices in full Friday expand +

Jets wide receiver Braylon Edwards (quadriceps) was back practicing in full with the team on Friday and will make the start against the Raiders this weekend.

Pyro's Take:

Braylon had a tough time last week without Cotchery lining up opposite him, but the poor outing was more due to Mark Sanchez and the weather than anything else. That won't be a problem this week, so feel free to start him on your fantasy team on Sunday.

Braylon limited at practice again expand +

Jets wide receiver Braylon Edwards (quadriceps) was limited at practice again on Thursday.

Pyro's Take:

We're figuring on Braylon playing on Sunday, but check back over the next few days just to be sure you can keep him in your fantasy football lineup.

Braylon limited at practice Wednesday expand +

Jets new starting wide receiver Braylon Edwards was limited in practice today with a quadriceps injury.

Pyro's Take:

This is a new one, as there was no talk about this before today. Check back tomorrow and Friday to see if he can be started on your fantasy football team this weekend.

Braylon puts on show for coaches expand +

Jets wide receiver Braylon Edwards has done nothing but impress his new coaches thus far. “He put on another show out there,” coach Rex Ryan said after Wednesday’s practice. “Oh my goodness. It’s ridiculous. It’s like, ‘Are you kidding me?’"

Pyro's Take:

No one has ever questioned Braylon's talent-level, just his heart. It looks like he's found a place where he can thrive, however, so fantasy owners can finally get him into their starting lineups as they'd hoped when they drafted him.

Edwards practices with Jets for first time Thursday expand +

Jets new wide receiver Braylon Edwards practiced with the team for the first time on Thursday and is already in line to start on Monday night against the Dolphins.

Pyro's Take:

It should be interesting to see if his game improves under the microscope of a big city like New York. We'd sit him on your fantasy football bench for a week to see how he takes to his new team.

Edwards to take Cotchery's split end position expand +

Jets wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery will be moving back to his natural flanker position now that Braylon Edwards is in the fold. Edwards will move into Cotchery's split end position.

Pyro's Take:

Cotchery has had a fine last few seasons at the flanker position, so his fantasy football value shouldn't take too much of a hit. Edwards now takes over as the deep threat for Dirty Sanchez as he improves his fantasy value just by not being in Cleveland.

Derek Anderson glad Braylon is gone expand +

Though he hasn't said so publicly, a league source says that Browns starting quarterback Derek Anderson is happy that receiver Braylon Edwards has been traded to the Jets.

Pyro's Take:

We're sure that the feeling is mutual buddy. Not just because you and that other crap QB (Brady Quinn) suck, but because your team sucks, your coach sucks, your organization sucks, your city sucks.....
Braylon's fantasy football value takes a jump up while Anderson's is still swirling around the toilet.

Braylon traded to the Jets expand +

The New York Jets acquired wide receiver Braylon Edwards from the Browns for WR Chansi Stuckey, LB Jason Trusnik, and two non-first round draft picks on Wednesday.

Pyro's Take:

The Jets finally get their complimentary receiver to Jerricho Cotchery. Edwards still might have to face disciplinary action from the NFL concerning a recent nightclub incident, but the move upgrades his fantasy football value nonetheless. Mark him back up to a WR3 on your team.

Braylon to flourish with Anderson at QB? expand +

Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards had a career year catching 16 touchdown passes in 2007 with Derek Anderson as the quarterback. "You know DA. He's a guy who likes to throw the deep ball, likes to get the ball out," Edwards said. "I like to run deep routes, so it's natural he'd look for me in those situations."

Pyro's Take:

Braylon has a point, and there's no denying the past, but the past is the past. The Browns have a new coach now, and more importantly, a different offensive coordinator than 2007, one who led the Browns to a ranking of 30th in passing TDs and 31st in passing yards last year.
Don't let your fantasy football team buy into the hype.

Braylon Edwards returns to practice expand +

Cleveland Browns' WR Braylon Edwards returned to practice Thursday after he left practice Wednesday with an apparant ankle injury.

Pyro's Take:

Edwards says he is fine and expects to play in the first preseason game Saturday night against the Packers. Edwards missed the first four days of training camp with an ankle injury so this will be a good test to see whether he is fully healthy or not.

Browns' Donte Stallworth suspended for one year from NFL expand +

Homicidal legally drunk motorist Donte "Beecher" Stallworth was suspended by Roger for one year as reported by Deadspin.com

Pyro's Take:

Stallworth is no Beecher. Not a day in the clink for getting drunk and killing someone - Beecher should have been so lucky. We agree with Goodell's decision, and can only hope that NFL players will continue to learn that making millions of dollars to play a game is not a license to act like a moron and exercise poor judgment.

Braylon Edwards faking it? expand +

According to Mike Florio of NBC Sports, Inside sources believe that Edwards's ankle injury could have something to do with the lack of trade or contract extension he has received.

Pyro's Take:

This can't shock anyone. Edwards does not seem to care about football, he is more concerned with his male-modeling career. Put us in the camp of fake-injury believers.
