2010 Fantasy Outlook

We like what we see in Henne (despite his alma mater), but he shouldnʼt be starting for you in any but the deepest of leagues.  Miami is a machine that wants to run the ball, and even the addition of super-stud Brandon Marshall wonʼt be turning this team into the Marino/Duper/Clayton Dolphins.  On the positive side, Henne is the clear-cut starter now and will put up a few good fantasy games along the way when the NFL matchup is there for the taking.  Basically, he’s a good #2.

The Dolphins have come out and stated that when the 2010 season starts, Chad Henne will be their starting QB.  That's some serious confidence in a guy who hasn't done a whole hell of a lot yet in his career.  He definitely has the potential as he's got a cannon for an arm and is a big boy standing at 6'3", 230 pounds, but we can't understand why Pennington is being dissed yet again.  What does that guy have to prove to gain some respect in this league?  Henne had a pretty good career while at the University of Michigan, but he's also the only Michigan QB ever to go 0-4 versus the Ohio State Buckeyes.  Does that mean he folds under pressure, or that he can't win the big game?  The Dolphins seem to have committed themselves to finding out those answers, but not for at least another year.

Tyler Thigpen is the likely handcuff to Henne this year, but we still can’t figure out why the all-time leader in completion %, Chad Pennington, continues to get slighted

Injury Report

Henne has just 17 NFL games under his belt, so yeah, he's good to go

Big Shots

Week 2 against the Washington Redskins, and the Jaguars are already talking how they are going to take some deep shots with Chad Henne. It didn't happen too often playing against the Philadelphia Eagles, even though offensive coordinator Jeff Fisch thought Henne was plenty agressive. Allen Hurns was the only receiver to have a reception longer than 18 yards, and touchdown catches of 34 and 21 yards and 46-yard strike down the left sideline.

Fisch went on to say about Henne: “We talked to him about that’s the way our system is built. Our system is we want to throw the ball down the field. We want to use the screen game to be able to make them run laterally so we can throw the ball vertically when they’re tired. With us, in order to run our offense, you’ve got to be able to throw the ball vertically. He’s going to keep ripping it and we’re going to keep encouraging him to let it rip."

Pyro's take: Chad Henne wants to take advantage of the deep-ball and it could become a game changer against Washington. Henne went on to say about the deep pass “If they present themselves out there, and we call them, we’re going to take those shots downfield and expect our guys to make (plays) and me make the throws." He added, “As much as they call it, I’m going to “huck it and chuck it" down the field. I’ve done it before, so it’s not like I’ve never done it. If the plays present themselves and we call those plays, we’ll take full advantage of it."

Washington's defense can be fully exposed to the deep pass, and if Chad Henne connects he could be looking for a nice day. He threw for 266 yards and two touchdowns against the Eagles, so there is little reason why he can't continue that success.

Henne will start and is a good sleeper this week

When the Jacksonville Jaguars head west to take on the Denver Broncos on Sunday, they'll be starting Chad Henne for the third time this season. Blaine Gabbert has dealt with injuries all season, missing his third start this year and the team will once again turn to Henne for spot duty, and maybe longer.

Henne has a chance to hold on to the starting job longer than he did the first go-round if he plays well, but his play in the preseason and regular season so far have left a lot to be desired, and Gus Bradley doesn't seem ready to slam the door shut on Blaine Gabbert just yet.

Pyro's take: Henne is battling the the horrible Blaine Gabbert and the stupid Gus Bradley to try to win the starting job for the Jaguars going forward. This week the jags have no chance to win against the Broncos, but Henne will have a chance for a lot of garbage time to put up some nice fantasy stats this week. It should also be a good week for Justin Blackmon and Cecil Shorts.

Chad Henne will start this week, but Gabbert still the starter

Jacksonville Jaguars coach Gus Bradley said Monday he expects Gabbert to miss Sunday's game at Denver because of a strained hamstring. The injury knocked Gabbert out of Sunday's 34-20 loss at St. Louis.

Bradley also reiterated that he's planning to stick with Gabbert, the 10th overall pick in the 2011 draft, as the starter when he's healthy again.

"Right now, that's what I think," Bradley said. "There are some crazy things that can happen, I guess. ... We'll see how Blaine does this week with his injury. I know it's very important for him to get back, and he's going to do everything he can to get back."

Pyro's take: Gus, you have to be kidding me!!! How can you tell me that you understand football, because you must have some real nice rose colored glasses when you are looking at Gabbert.

Gabbert has now completed 42 of 86 passes for a 48.8% rate (Josh Freeman territory), and only thrown for 481 yards. Then there is the fact that he has just one touchdown pass (thanks to Justin Blackmon) and thrown 7 interceptions. Gabbert is atrocious and thankfully hurt at the moment.

So Gus, while watching your team get trounced by the Broncos this week, just think that if Gabbert was starting the Broncos would have had 21 more points of his turnovers. Wake up and let Henne have the job!

Henne to use full playbook on Sunday

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said on Thursday that neither the play-calling nor the plays themselves will be altered in the slightest with Chad Henne under center instead of Pennington.

Pyro's take: Henne's arm strength changes the plays all on it's own. Look for more chances being taken down field with Ted Ginn Jr. from here on out, which gives a nice boost to Ginn's fantasy football worth.

Henne officially has new backup QB

Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington (shoulder) was put on injured reserve Tuesday afternoon, thus ending his 2009 season.

Pyro's take: The move was made on the heels of the Tyler Thigpen trade as Miami needed to open a roster spot for their new backup QB. Neither Chad Henne or Thigpen should be on your fantasy football team at this point.

Henne to take over starting job in Miami

Miami Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington suffered a torn capsule in his throwing shoulder on Sunday and is likely done for the year. However, he is seeking a second opinion just to be sure.

Pyro's take: Chad hadn't been doing much this year for his 0-3 team, so it's just as well that strong-armed Chad Henne takes over the reins for the bottom-dwelling Dolphins. He might even be worth a pickup in fantasy leagues if you need a QB.

Henne strong in preseason opener

Miami Dolphins QB Chad Henne looked strong and accurate in the Dolphins preseason game against the Jaguars Monday night. He ended up going 7 of 11 for 94 yards with a 33-yard TD and one interception despite the rain.

Pyro's take: Henne could have had two TDs on the evening, but Ricky Williams butterfingered the second one. His arm strength was as impressive as advertised, while his accuracy and in-game command were better than normal. If Henne keeps this up, current starting QB Chad Pennington might be forced out of the lineup before his contract runs up at the end of the year.

Dolphins' Henne to get big-time look on Monday

Miami Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano said that he wants 2nd-string QB Chad Henne to play the whole 2nd quarter with the first-team offensive line, as well as possibly the whole 3rd quarter as well.

Pyro's take: Henne, though talented as hell with a cannon for an arm, will still be arming the clipboard this year regardless of how much preseason time he gets. However, Sparano is doing the right thing in getting him as much time as he can now because Pennington, though still the better QB at this point, breaks down easier than Kirstie Alley in a chocolate factory.
