Chad Pennington

Miami Dolphins

Respect

If the Dolphins or Jets aren't gonna give him any, we're happy to.  Chad Pennington has sorta been crapped on over the last year, but they seem to be overlooking a couple of things.  He is the all-time leader in completion percentage (66%) and has a QB rating of 90.6.  That is higher than John Elway, Dan Marino, Dan Fouts, Brett Favre, and just shy of the QB rating NFL history leader, Joe Montana.  From a leadership standpoint, he's the type of guy that GMs typically crave.  He regularly heads player-only meetings so that the offensive players can study film together and work on their team communication.  This is the time where teams truly bond together - no coaches, no official practices, just a bunch of guys dedicated to their craft figuring some things out on their own.  Respect.

Dis-respect

The Jets bounced him out of town in favor of the Brett Favre Comeback #1.  Laveranues Coles was so disappointed by the way Pennington was treated last summer that he publicly aired his sentiments and even went so far as to give his new QB a cold reception.

Pennington responded to the Jets dismissal by not only playing a central role in the Miami revival, but becoming fantasy relevant again and finishing as a runner-up in the MVP voting in 2008.  Respect.  Well, at least he should have gained some respect.  It seems the folks down in Miami inherited the same interpretation of the word that the people up in Jersey have, as the Dolphins have publicly iterated that Chad Henne will be their starting QB in 2010, but that he's not quite ready yet this year.  Dis-respect.

It's the injury factor.  It's gotta be.  He took the Jets to the playoffs in the three years he played at least 13 games (2002, 2004, 2006).  The other years that he was the starter, he was down for much of each season, leaving the team to the likes of Kellen Clemens (2007), Brooks Bolinger (2005), and a 40-year old version of Vinny Testaverde (2003).

Solid tape-job!

2009 Fantasy Outlook

While Chad's stats last year were pretty good, they really weren't "fantasy good".  In his career, he's thrown for 20 or more TDs just once, and that was back in 2002.  He doesn't throw for many 300+ yard games, he doesn't score at all on the ground, and on the Dolphins, he's held back even a little bit more due to the offense and the lack of big-time players lining up at receiver.  He's a solid #3 QB on your squad, but if you have him as your #2, you might be in a little bit of trouble.  Expect more of the same stats you always see again this year.

Contract

Pennington signed a straightforward two-year contract with the Dolphins worth $7.9 million in August of '08.  There was no signing bonus, and the deal was pretty much split down the middle with the first year being worth $4 million.

Handcuff

Chad Henne - The Dolphins have come out and said that Pennington will be the unquestioned starter in 2009.  They have also let Pennington know that his time is now and that they would like Chad Henne to be the starter come 2010.  Henne's arm strength alone will make him an upgrade at the position when he finally gets to play, but how soon that will be will most likely depend on Pennington's health this year.  Henne would be a good handcuff to have here as Pennington has only played a full 16-game season twice in his 9-year career, but Miami simply doesn't have the weapons to make him worth a pick.

Injury Report

Yellow

Chad put in a solid 16 games last year and doesn’t have any injuries to speak of rolling into 2009, but he’s been injury-prone throughout his career, so proceed in drafting him with a slight bit of caution.

Breaking News

Pennington season over, put on IR expand +

Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington (shoulder) was put on injured reserve Tuesday afternoon, thus ending his 2009 season.

Pyro's Take:

The move was made on the heels of the Tyler Thigpen trade as Miami needed to open a roster spot for their new backup QB. Neither Chad Henne or Thigpen should be on your fantasy football team at this point.

Pennington done for the year expand +

Miami Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington suffered a torn capsule in his throwing shoulder on Sunday and is likely done for the year. However, he is seeking a second opinion just to be sure.

Pyro's Take:

Chad hadn't been doing much this year for his 0-3 team, so it's just as well that strong-armed Chad Henne takes over the reins for the bottom-dwelling Dolphins. He might even be worth a pickup in fantasy leagues if you need a QB.

Henne strong in preseason opener expand +

Miami Dolphins QB Chad Henne looked strong and accurate in the Dolphins preseason game against the Jaguars Monday night. He ended up going 7 of 11 for 94 yards with a 33-yard TD and one interception despite the rain.

Pyro's Take:

Henne could have had two TDs on the evening, but Ricky Williams butterfingered the second one. His arm strength was as impressive as advertised, while his accuracy and in-game command were better than normal. If Henne keeps this up, current starting QB Chad Pennington might be forced out of the lineup before his contract runs up at the end of the year.
