Chansi Stuckey

Cleveland Browns

Take a Chansi on Stuckey

Back in February of this off-season, the Jets got together with Laveranues Coles with the hopes of re-signing the steady WR.  Coles was completely open to coming back to play for the Jets, but wanted a long-term contract when the Jets were looking for something a little less permanent.  In the end, with the differences between the two camps coming to a stalemate, the Jets decided to let Coles test the free agent market and take a chance on young Chansi Stuckey being their #2 WR.

Being a 7th-round draft pick back in 2007, Stuckey has had to work hard to gain the respect of his coaches and stay in the NFL.  He doesn't have the physical gifts that many other WRs possess, running only a 4.5 40-yard dash while standing 6'0" and weighing 185 lbs., but he still makes things happen on the field one way or another.  In 2007, his 11 receptions in the preseason made for a very promising start to his career, but unfortunately, he broke his right foot and was placed on IR for the entire regular season.  Then to start the 2008 season, even though he wasn't a starter, Stuckey went on to catch touchdowns in each of the team's first three games.  He has great hands and has an amazing ability after the catch to make the most of every play.  Basically, this kid simply gets the job done and could end up surprising some people as a start in 2009.

2009 Fantasy Outlook

Stuckey has the potential to become a pretty good #2 receiver in real life for the Jets, but as for this upcoming fantasy season, with rookie QB Mark Sanchez likely running the ship, we don't see much hope.  You won't even need to look for him on the waiver wire this season.  We probably shouldn't say that, because Drew Bennett came out of nowhere in 2004 to rip off 1,247 yards and 11 TDs... most of it from a career backup QB (Billy Volek).

Breaking News

Chansi Stuckey traded to Browns for Braylon expand +

The Cleveland Browns traded WR Chansi Stuckey, LB Jason Trusnik, and two non-first round draft picks to the Jets for wide receiver Braylon Edwards on Wednesday.

Pyro's Take:

Stuckey will likely be inserted into the starting lineup immediately, but with the quarterback situation in Cleveland, his fantasy football value takes a hit. He wasn't much more than a flex play before the trade and won't be more than that now.

Chansi Stuckey wins No. 2 WR job expand +

New York Jets wide receiver Chansi Stuckey has won the Week 1 starting spot opposite WR Jerricho Cotchery. Stuckey had been in a neck-and-neck competition with David Clowney from the outset of camp.

Pyro's Take:

Stuckey and Clowney, two-thirds of the best-named WR corps in the league, had each staked claim to the starting spot over the past couple of weeks, but the preseason game against the Giants first-team defense on August 29th won Stuckey the job. Clowney has the speed to burn defenses deep, but with rookie QB Mark Sanchez likely to be under a good amount of defensive pressure this year, the Jets opted for the more versatile Stuckey to start the season. He's still only worth a last-round flier in your draft.

Chansi Stuckey looks to start opposite Cotchery expand +

After his strong performance against the Giants last week, New York Jets WR Chansi Stuckey seems to have locked up the WR2 spot next to Jerricho Cotchery.

Pyro's Take:

WR David Clowney looked to have passed Stuckey on the depth chart just last week, but Chansi's big game against the Giants might have put him over the top once again. Stuckey is still barely worth a late-round flier in a 10-man league, while Clowney should now be left on the waiver wire.

Stuckey being demoted? expand +

New York Jets WR David Clowney worked with the first-team offense on Wednesday, which may indicate he has passed Chansi Stuckey on the team's depth chart.

Pyro's Take:

Clowney has had a great preseason thus far, catching five balls for 135 yards and two TDs in two games. Clowney has the speed to be able to lengthen the field, which might be what the Jets and Mark Sanchez need this year. It's tough to advocate a WR2 with a rookie QB, but Clowney may have just reached deep-sleeper status with his promotion to the first team.

Chansi Stuckey likely to start for the Jets expand +

New York Jets WR Chansi Stuckey is likely to be the No. 2 WR on the Jets and start opposite Jerricho Cotchery, according to beat writer Mark Cannizzaro.

Pyro's Take:

Stuckey and Brad Smith are the only receivers other than Cotchery with solid NFL experience. But with either Mark Sanchez or Kellen Clemens taking the reins at QB, the Jets will be a run first team, so don't expect much from the No. 2 receiver position.
