Correll Buckhalter

Denver Broncos

Tenny

Buckhalter will turn 31 this season. He has only played one full season since joining the league in 2001. He missed all of 2002 with an ACL in his left knee and missed both 2004 and 2005 with a torn patellar tendon. He managed to have his best fantasy season in over five seasons in '08 finishing with 693 yards and four TDs. His best overall productive fantasy season was in 2003 when he finished with 675 total yards and nine TDs. What most likely got Buckhalter his contract was his rushing average the last two seasons. He averaged 5.0 YPC in 2008 and 4.9 in 2007 while Brian Westbrook playing with the same line averaged 4.8 YPC in 2007 and 4.0 in 2008. Buckhalter was also impressive out of the backfield going for 324 yards but more impressive was his 12.5 yards per catch.

Buckhalter plays his best ball when he gets 10+ carries, yet he has never been able to manage a full load.  In  four games in '08 where he had 10+ carries, he carried the ball 54 times for 265 yards for a 4.90 average and scored two TD and they were against good rush defenses - Pitt (2nd) Chi (5th), Dallas(12th) SF (13th). In 2007 Buckhalter had one game of 10+ carries and he went 17 for 103 for a 6.05 average compared t0 45 carries for a 4.66 average yards. In 2006 he had one game of 10+ carries and went 11 for 49 for a 4.45 average compared to 72 carries for 296 yards and a 4.11 average in games with less than 10 carries.

In 2003 he had six games of 10+ carries for a total of 86 carries for 438 yards for a 5.09 average compared to 40 carries in games he did not get 10 carries for 104 yards and a 2.6 average. In 2001 in games he had 10+ carries he had 91 carries for 474 yards and a 5.20 average compared to 38 carries for 112 yards and a 2.94 average for games below 10 carries. Overall Buckhalter has played 22 games in which  he has 10+ carries and has 259 carries for 1,329 yards and a 5.13 average... interesting.

2009 Fantasy Outlook

He's another Elijah Price-type RB who is over 30 years old but has the mileage of a 22 year old RB.  He will be part of a RBBC in Denver that rookie Knowshown Moreno will likely lead.  Draft Buckhalter as a 2nd handcuff to Moreno (after Lamont Jordan) if your league allows extra roster spots.  If not, he will likely be available on the waiver wire for you.

contract

Buckhalter signed a four-year, $10 million contract in February of '09 that included $1.8 million in guaranteed dollars. He would be a free agent in 2013.

Yellow

Buckhalter has once played in all 16 games and has missed several full seasons to injury. He can't be depended on to shoulder a full load should Moreno go down.

Breaking News

Coach hopeful on Buckhalter's Week 16 return expand +

Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said on Monday that he is hopeful that running back Correll Buckhalter (ankle) will be able to return to practice later this week and play in the game against the Eagles this weekend.

Pyro's Take:

The Denver running game wasn't close to what it normally is with Buckhalter in the lineup, as he and Knowshon Moreno work much better as a tandem than separate. We'll keep you posted throughout the week on his progress.

Buckhalter doubtful for Sunday expand +

Broncos running back Correll Buckhalter (high ankle sprain) missed practice again on Friday and is listed as doubtful for the game against the Raiders on Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

With Buckhalter out, Knowshon Moreno will take on the every-down back role against a team that gives up the world to RBs. Boost him up to a borderline RB1 on your fantasy football team this weekend because of the news.

Buckhalter misses practice Wednesday expand +

Broncos running back Correll Buckhalter (ankle) missed practice on Wednesday and doesn't look likely to play this weekend against the Raiders.

Pyro's Take:

Bump Knowshon Moreno way up your fantasy RB chart for this week as the Donkeys take on a porous Oakland Raiders D.

Buckhalter on crutches after Sunday's game expand +

Broncos running back Correll Buckhalter was seen walking around on crutches after the game against the Colts on Sunday. Buckhalter injured his right ankle in the first quarter yesterday and did not return to the game.

Pyro's Take:

If Buckhalter can't play in the game next Sunday against Oakland, Knowshon Moreno would become a nice high-end RB2 for your fantasy football team, so keep an eye on this situation throughout the week.

Buckhalter all of a sudden probable to play expand +

Broncos running back Correll Buckhalter (knee) returned to a full practice on Friday after missing out on Thursday and is now listed as probable on the team's Week 11 injury report.

Pyro's Take:

This may be a bit of good news for the Donkeys, but what they really need is for Kyle Orton to be able to play this game. Buckhalter is barely a decent flex in fantasy football at this point.

Denver RBs Buckhalter, Jordan miss practice expand +

Broncos running backs Correll Buckhalter (knee) and LaMont Jordan (undisclosed) missed practice on Thursday.

Pyro's Take:

That would leave just two healthy RBs for the Donkeys: Knowshon Moreno and Peyton Hillis. Again, as with every other skill-position player on the team, if Orton plays, Moreno is a solid RB2 for your fantasy football team this weekend. If not, the Chargers will run-blitz all day long and swallow up the value of both running backs and wide receivers alike.

Buckhalter limited at practice expand +

Broncos running back Correll Buckhalter (knee) was limited in practice on Wednesday.

Pyro's Take:

He should be fine and playing come Sunday. He was barely used last week after coughing up a fumble in the first quarter, and though he may have been in the doghouse for a week, we're guessing the point was taken.

Buckhalter getting the start Monday night was situational expand +

Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said on Wednesday that the decision to start running back Correll Buckhalter over rookie Knowshon Moreno had nothing to do with either of their performances this year.

Pyro's Take:

Simply put, Buckhalter has been the better RB this year. Knowshon looks lost sometimes, while Buck is averaging almost a full two yards more per carry than Moreno. It's tough to advocate starting either one as more than a flex play on your fantasy football team at this point, but Knowshon still has slightly more value going forward.

Buckhalter to play Monday night expand +

Broncos coach Josh McDaniels confirmed on Friday that running back Correll Buckhalter (ankle) will indeed play against the Chargers Monday night.

Pyro's Take:

Knowshon Moreno will still likely get the start and majority of the carries, but Buckhalter will be a nice change-of-pace RB for the Broncs. Hold off on playing him, though, if you can.

Buckhalter returns to practice, LaMont Jordan sits out expand +

Broncos running back Correll Buckhalter (ankle) returned to practice to take hand-offs and catch screen passes on Wednesday, but third-string RB LaMont Jordan sat out with an unknown injury.

Pyro's Take:

Knowshon Moreno still took all the first-team reps and should carry the load again this coming Monday night against the Chargers. Moreno looks to be a solid RB2 fantasy football play for the time being.

Buckhalter misses practice again on Thursday expand +

Broncos running back Correll Buckhalter was absent from practice yet again on Thursday, but was said to have walking around without his crutches and without a limp.

Pyro's Take:

All indications are that he will miss this week's game against the Patriots, but we might see him back sooner than originally expected in Week 6. Keep him on your fantasy football bench for now.

Buckhalter's status for Week 5 not looking good expand +

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, it doesn't look like Broncos running back Correll Buckhalter (ankle) will be able to play this Sunday against the Patriots.

Pyro's Take:

This is merely speculation at this point, but regardless of Buck's availability, rookie RB Knowshon Moreno should garner more touches against the Pats and should be a nice RB2 fantasy football play this week.

Buckhalter not concerned about ankle expand +

Broncos running back Correll Buckhalter was on crutches after spraining his ankle in Sunday's game, but didn't seem concerned about it. "Just a sprained ankle," said Buckhalter, "Nothing more."

Pyro's Take:

Good for Buckhalter fantasy football owners, bad for Knowshon Moreno owners. With as many injuries as Buck has sustained in his career, it was looking like Moreno was finally going to get a full shot. We'll see later in the week.

Buckhalter splits carries with Moreno in Week 1 expand +

Even though Broncos running back Correll Buckhalter started the game, he and Knowshon Moreno ended up with the same amount of carries in Week 1. "We're going to play everybody here," OC Mike McCoy said. "There will be a certain rotation we're going to have, depending on the way the game is going."

Pyro's Take:

This was expected, as the rookie missed a bunch of time in the preseason dealing with a bum knee. Hold off starting Moreno until he takes the starting job by the balls.

LaMont Jordan back in crowded Denver backfield on Tuesday expand +

Joining rookie Knowshon Moreno back at practice on Tuesday was Denver Broncos RB LaMont Jordan. Jordan was out all of last week dealing with a leg injury.

Pyro's Take:

Jordan may be back with the team, but the question is for how long? With first-round draft pick Moreno now back, Peyton Hillis running well, and Correll Buckhalter the current starter, Jordan would seem to be the odd man out. We'll see how the always crowded Denver backfield shakes out in the coming week.
