Dallas Clark

Indianapolis Colts

2009 Review

No Marvin, No problem. It’s been a steady rise for Dallas Clark over the past 5-6 years, and now it seems the gun finally caught up to the bullet during the 2009 season.  The fact is, looking at his numbers alone doesn’t do proper justice to the year he actually had.  In a season full of question marks and inexperienced faces, Clark stood out as the most dependable target for Manning throughout it all.  He came up with big receptions and first downs time and time again and if it weren’t for Colts owner Bill Polian, he might have led his team to an undefeated season.  100 catches, 1,100 yards, and 10 touchdowns is a career year for any wide receiver, let alone for a tight end.  If this is the type of production we can expect him to have in the future, Dallas Clark might just be the new fantasy TE sheriff in town.

~ Ranked second in the league with 169.7 TE fantasy points (basic scoring system)

~ Tied for seventh in the league with 10 receiving touchdowns

~ Ranked second among tight ends in the league with 1,106 receiving yards (16th overall)

~ Ranked second among tight ends in the league with 69.1 receiving yards per game (17th overall)

~ Ranked first among tight ends in the league with 100 receptions (tied for 5th overall)

~ Ranked second among tight ends in the league with 132 targets (15th overall)

~ Tied for fifth among tight ends in the league with 11 receptions of 20+ yards (tied for 39th overall)

~ Ranked second among tight ends in the league with 59 catches for first downs (tied for 9th overall)

~ Ranked second among tight ends in the league with 378 yards after the catch (YAC) (tied for 14th overall)

~ Set career bests in receptions (100), receiving yards (1,106), yards/game (69.1), and yards from scrimmage (1,117)

~ 2009 First-Team All-Pro and made his first career Pro Bowl team

2010 Fantasy Outlook

Anything is possible with Peyton Manning calling the signals, but to expect Clark to repeat his 2009 numbers might be a bit too hopeful.  Seeing him come back down to Earth and put up around 80 catches, 900+ yards, and around 8-9 TDs might be a more realistic forecast, but that still keeps him in the Top-5 tight ends in the league, and probably closer to #1 than #5.  He has the potential to be the best TE in the game, especially playing for an offensive juggernaut like the Colts, so making him the first tight end off the board in 2010 fantasy drafts is not a stretch in the slightest.

~ Manning is Manning, so not a lot will change from 2009 to 2010

~ With Gonzalez coming back, the offense might be opened up even more for Clark

~ Knowing the relationship between Manning and Harrison in the past, gaining Manning’s trust last year will go a long way for Clark

His game

He runs the 40 yard dash in 4.54 seconds which is among the top five TE’s in the league.  He is a matchup nightmare.  He is too fast for most linebackers, and at 6’3” and 252 lbs he can flatten any defensive back.  He has solid hands and quickness but there is nothing special about his blocking ability – which suits his fantasy owners just fine.   Clark also brings a couple of intangibles to the mix.  He is a smart football player who is adept at finding the soft spot in a zone and,  as already stated, is prolific in the red-zone.   He is just as comfortable going over the middle as he is running a quick-out.

Injury Report

Yellow

Clark battles nagging injuries every year. Whether it be an ankle, thigh, knee, groin, neck, or a concussion, he is always hangin’ on the injured list and will miss a game or three each season.

Breaking News

Pro Bowl: Heath Miller replaces Dallas Clark expand +

Colts tight end Dallas Clark will be skipping the NFL Pro Bowl this year due to the fact that he'll be playing in the Super Bowl a week later. Clark was replaced by Steelers TE Heath Miller on the AFC roster.

Pyro's Take:

Love to see that Heath made the squad here. He had an outstanding season and would have easily made the roster if it weren't for guys like Antonio Gates and Clark standing in his way. Miller far surpassed his career highs in both receptions (76, was 48) and receiving yards (789, was 566) in 2009 and was a key component in helping QB Ben Roethlisberger surpass his own career highs in completions, completion percentage, and yards this year.

Dallas Clark set to go despite illness expand +

After being limited due to an illness earlier in the week, Colts tight end Dallas Clark took part in full practices Thursday and Friday and is being listed as probable on the team's injury report.

Pyro's Take:

Dallas will be playing this weekend, so no worries there. Look for the All-Pro to be heavily involved in the Colts high-powered attack against the Jets on Sunday

Colts coach still vague on Week 16 playing time expand +

When addressing the media during his Monday press conference, Colts coach Jim Caldwell was still indeterminate as to whether his star players would play the whole game, a few series, or even at all against the Jets next Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

He also said that playing time would be determined by a player's health, but that could mean anything at this point as Peyton Manning, Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark, Pierre Garcon, and Joseph Addai have all dealt with various nagging injuries throughout the past bunch of weeks.
We'll keep you posted on with any and all updates coming through as we know many fantasy football seasons depend on some of these Colts players.

With Gonzalez out, Dallas Clark will see expanded role expand +

With the news that Colts wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez will miss at least 4-6 weeks, coach Jim Caldwell said that tight end Dallas Clark will be even further incorporated into the Indianapolis passing game.

Pyro's Take:

Clark was already a top-5 fantasy tight end before the news, but could vault into the top two or three when all is said and done.
