2012 Pros and Cons

(+) Darren Sproles absolutely exploded in the “Reggie Bush” role last season and should have a stranglehold on that role for years to come

(+) Sproles might actually be Brees’ second favorite target as he is a matchup nightmare (like Jimmy Graham) whenever he’s on the field

(+) Was targeted an incredible 111 times and hauled in a career high 86 passes last season

(+) Averaged nearly seven yards per carry in 2011, the most of any regular RB in the league

(–) Potential workhorse of the future, Mark Ingram, should be healthy to start the season and take away more than a few carries from Sproles

(–) Although he is still explosive at 29 years of age, it will be difficult for him to repeat his performance of ten total TDs last season

(–) The most touches he had in any one game was 18 while the most carries he had was 12 (only two games in double-digits)

Injury Report

Green

Nah. For as small as the guy is, he simply doesn't get injured. No worries here

Limited

Darren Sproles was not nearly as successful against the Redskins as he was against the Colts. Sproles only ran twice for 20 yards and caught three passes for 30. Against Indianapolis he had four attempts for 26 yards and one touchdown, he also had seven receptions for 152 yards.

Sproles still has 313 yards from scrimmage on 31 touches through three games. He will look to get back on track in Week 4 against the 49ers.

Pyro's take: Sproles is going to be a boom or bust player, and making part of an already spread out offense is going to make it even more difficult to get him consistent numbers. The best thing to do is play the match-up, or if LeSean McCoy is out, then the start makes more sense.

Against the 49ers it will be difficult for him to get some good numbers going, especially against their pro-bowl linebackers.

Sproles relied on

Darren Sproles was relied on heavily in their opening win against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Sproles 11 carries were more than he has logged in all but four of his 123 career regular-season games. Chip Kelly went on to say about Darren Sproles "I've said since day one, I don't know why" Sproles did not run often in the past, Kelly said. "I think he's an outstanding running back. He proved it [Sunday] and it's nothing that he has not proved from the first two or three days we saw him in the offseason program . . . He's really, really talented, and you have to find ways to get the football in his hands."

Pyro's take: Darren Sproles had 71 total yards rushing, while one came on a 49 yard jaunt. The important aspect is that Sproles is getting carries, even though that translates into a 2.2 carry average, Sproles is used to get the homerun, and the other stuff can be ignored if he connects. He was also used in the punt and kickoff role.

The most telling evidence is what LeSean McCoy had to say about the smallish Darren Sproles "I didn't know he had that much fight in him," McCoy said. "His role is bigger here. By committee, we are going to do it together. He looked real good. He gives me that extra push that I like. I know that if I come out or it's his package, he can still make big plays. He is elusive and he's very tough."

McCoy mentioning a committee backfield is not something owners want to hear about their star first round pick, but this could easily be the circumstance. One game wont be a large enough sample size to fully understand the impact of Sproles, but it should be enough to send warning signs.

Eagles land RB Darren Sproles for 2014 5th-rounder

In a trade with the New Orleans Saints earlier today, the Philadelphia Eagles picked up running back Darren Sproles in exchange for a 5th-round pick in this year's draft.

Pyro's take: Even though Sproles has only one year left on his contract at $3.5 million ($3.4 million base, $100,000 workout bonus), the pickup was well worth it, especially for an Eagles team with a legitimate shot at a 2014 Super Bowl berth.

For those concerned how the trade affects LeSean McCoy's fantasy value, I wouldn't worry too much about it. The Eagles were looking to reduce McCoy's workload a bit anyway, so all they really did was upgrade on the player who was going to receive those extra touches.

As for Sproles' fantasy value, it probably takes a slight hit as well, but likely would have anyway due to the wear and tear he's earned over the years (turns 31 in June).

Sproles won't be used in short-yardage anymore

According to Chargers coach Norv Turner, running back Darren Sproles will likely not be seen in short-yardage situations anymore as Turner acknowledged that Sproles is “not going to move the pile.”

Pyro's take: LT and the two big fullbacks, Jacob Hester and Michael Tolbert, will assume those duties from here on out.
Sproles has been a disappointment from a fantasy football perspective this year as it was thought his role in the offense would increase, but hasn't done so enough to make a difference.

With LT back, Sproles back to normal role?

Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson is active for the game tonight against the Steelers.

Pyro's take: LT's back, but don't get over-excited as we believe he'll likely be splitting carries with Darren Sproles, at least for a week. Hopefully you handcuffed these two guys on your fantasy football team.

Sproles will start again in Week 3

Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson (ankle) has officially been ruled out for the game against the Dolphins this weekend.

Pyro's take: The Chargers will likely keep their star running back out next week as well as they try to get LT back to complete health. Darren Sproles should again be a decent fantasy play on Sunday.

Sproles likely to get the call again

Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson sat out practice again on Wednesday due to the ankle injury he suffered in Week 1.

Pyro's take: The Chargers aren't planning on LT21 being ready for the game this week against the Dolphins, so Darren Sproles is likely to carry the load once again. He's an option if you got him.

Sproles a huge asset out of the backfield

Arizona Cardinals running back Tim Hightower leads the NFL in targets out of the backfield with 17 thus far, while Darren Sproles comes in a close second with 16.

Pyro's take: Sproles was already tabbed to take on a bigger role this season, but with Tomlinson out with a bum ankle, it's not unexpected to see the little guy targeted as much as he has been. Expect more of the same as the year moves along regardless of LT's injury.

Sproles to start against Ravens on Sunday

With perennial All-Pro LaDainian Tomlinson sidelined with an ankle injury, running back Darren Sproles will get the start for the Chargers this weekend.

Pyro's take: Michael Turner would have loved a chance like this years back. Sproles, however, will be getting his chance against a tough-as-nails Baltimore D. As much as we would like to say to take a chance, it's probably not a good idea to start Sproles on your fantasy team this week.

LT looks his age, Sproles takes on bigger role

San Diego Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson rolled his ankle on a play in which he fumbled the ball for the first time in 987 touches Monday night.

Pyro's take: The injury isn't a concern, but LT21 starting to look his age is. It seems like the Chargers may go with a RBBC from here on out as Darren Sproles and Tomlinson each got 14 touches in the game. We hope you did the right thing in your fantasy draft and handcuffed these two guys together.

Stay classy, San Diego.

LT pushing for a 2-H package?

LT has been pushing head coach Norv Turner to implement a few plays that would have both he and his super-speedy understudy, Darren Sproles, in a dual halfback package together on Sundays this fall. Norv Turner has thus far been resistent to the idea.

Pyro's take: We don't love on coach Turner too much on this site, but we may start, assuming he continues to resist this idea. We don't see LT lead-blocking for Sproles on even one play per week as having more value long-term than not. If Turner plays his cards right and uses reasonable doses of each guy, this can be one of the more successful fantasy backfields this season. LT should put up top 5 numbers with around 320-330 total touches, while Sproles could slightly increase his fantasy points this season as well.

Stay Classy, San Diego.
