2012 Pros and Cons

(+)The former first round pick, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Finally emerged as a legitimate receiver rather than athlete in his 3rd season

(+)He finally put his speed to use averaging 15.2 yards per catch

(+) For the first time in his career he caught over 50% of his targets and had 11 games with at least 4 catches

(+) DHB developed a good rapport with quarterback Carson Palmer especially over the last 3 games of the year in which he posted 21 catches for 355 yards and 2 TD

(-)Has yet to show a consistent game on a week to week basis

(-) In his first season DHB failed to adequately pick up the playbook and will again be learning a new system

(-)DHB has competition behind him in Moore and Ford and needs to continue his progression or could lose targets

(-) DHB needs to be more effective in the redzone as he only posted 4 TD’s last season

Al Davis - Mastermind

Heyward-Bey is the latest chapter in the novel "Al Davis and the Chamber of Secrets" by Al Davis.  Why he drafted Heyward-Bey (who by many was considered a 2nd-round pick at best, never mind a top-10 pick) when Crabtree and Jeremy Maclin were on the board is a mystery that might never be solved.  This is a guy that drafted a place kicker in the 1st-round for crying out loud.  That's the equivalent of Chef Emeril Lagasse starting his show off by nuking a Lean Cuisine.

By the way, over the course of his three-year college career, Heyward-Bey put up 4 more catches, 127 more yards, and 9 less touchdowns than Crabtree had... IN HIS FRESHMAN YEAR ALONE!!!

Injury Report

Green

Darrius dealt with a strained hamstring that kept him out of the OTA's early in the summer, but he arrived at training camp fully recovered. His bigger problem is that he still has those butterfingers to deal with...

Darrius Heyard-Bey suffers a sprained MCL

The team did not elaborate on the severity of the injury or offer a timetable for Heyward-Bey’s return. However, a team spokesman denied reports that their offseason free-agent acquisition might miss significant time.

“It’s not serious,” the spokesman said.

Will Carroll, a lead writer for Bleacher Report, reported via Twitter that Heyward-Bey suffered a Grade 1 sprain of his medial collateral ligament. That’s considered the mildest sprain and involves a stretched ligament, not a tear. Surgery generally is not required.

“It always stinks when a guy goes down, but that’s the nature of football,” quarterback Andrew Luck said Monday. “Hopefully it’s not too serious, and I don’t think it is.”

Pyro's take: Heyward-Bey is going to miss valuable practice time with this injury, and his status for season opener is still in doubt. T.Y. Hilton will step into the #2 receiver role opposite Reggie Wayne. It is not serious, but DHB has had too many injury issues in his past, and for a guy trying to take resurrect his career this is a tough setback.

Despite terrible first game, Cable sticking with Heyward-Bey

Oakland Raiders coach had this to say about wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey after the game Monday night: “I thought I saw a real nervous, uptight young man, a lot of big eyes,” Cable said. “They’ll have their highs and their lows as they go through this thing. We’ll expect him to be better next week."

Pyro's take: The Raiders other rookie receiver, Louis Murphy, looked light-years ahead of DHB at this point, but Al Davis and Tom Cable want (have) to stick with their first-rounder for now. Expect some growing pains with Heyward-Bey and stick him on the far end of your fantasy bench.

Heyward-Bey, Schilens listed as team's starting receivers

Oakland Raiders WRs Darrius Heyward-Bey and Chaz Schilens were listed as the starting wide receivers on the team's initial depth chart.

Pyro's take: Even though DHB is a rookie and Chaz is a relative unknown around the league, it still shouldn't be much of a surprise to see these two names atop the Raiders WR list. While Jabroni Walker is still recovering from a checkers incident back in 2001, Johnnie Lee Higgins will be coming to games late due to a regular Sunday gig playing with the Good Ol' Boys at the Country Bunker.

#7 pick, Bey, signs one day late

Darrius Heyward-Bey inked a $54 million deal, of which $23.5 million is guaranteed.

Pyro's take: Huh? So that makes the JaMarcus Russell to Heyward-Bey connection priced out at $115 million all told. Poor Al.
