2009 Review

RBBC - tandem in carolina

Carolina played one of the toughest schedules against the run last year, but DeAngelo Williams still bucked the odds and came out of 2009 with fantasy starter-worthy numbers.  And if that wasn’t enough, he also did it despite getting 20+ carries in a game only three times the whole year… PLUS he only played 13 games and was injured in the first quarter of a fourth!  That's more amazing than the fact that Lindsey Lohan gets so much attention for doing nothing except for wearing no underwear...  So basically, the smaller, quicker half of “Double Trouble” proved that his 2008 season was no fluke, but because he got injured later on in the season, his durability has now been brought into question.  Whatever the case, when he plays, DeAngelo is a thing of beauty to watch and rarely disappoints.

2010 Fantasy Outlook

The only problem with DeAngelo Williams is that he will have to battle the (almost) equally talented Jonathan Stewart for carries again in 2010, and will do so happily.  The Panthers front office and coaching staff have already determined that they will proceed with the offensive game plan that has been working for them, which means they will continue running a full-out RBBC… and DeAngelo 100% welcomes it.  “We’re each about 220 or 230 carries a year,’’ Williams said. “I’d rather have that than 300-plus carries a year. That wears on your legs and you’re not going to last long doing that. With me and Jonathan back there and sharing it the way we do, that’s a real treat and neither one of us is going to get worn out.’’ (Source: ESPN.com)  This would normally be a situation to stay away from in your draft, but if Williams can stay healthy this year, there’s no question he’s still an RB1 for your fantasy team in 2010.

~ The emergence of Jonathan Stewart could take even MORE carries away from DeAngelo

~ With Williams being more on the smallish side, the injuries could start to pile up and affect his running style

~ The switch to Matt Moore, or whoever lines up behind center, has the possibility of affecting the Panthers running game.  Which way is yet to be determined

DeAngelo signed a five-year, $14.5 million contract back in 2006.  The deal included $5 million guaranteed with another $3 million available through incentives.  The final year plays out as follows:

2010 - $725,000

2011 - Free Agent

DeAngelo is playing for a new contract, so he should be in line for a big season despite his timeshare situation with Jonathan Stewart

Injury Report

Nothing wrong with DeAngelo heading into the 2009 season.

So Much For Splittsburgh In Pittsburgh

Pyro's take: Le’Veon Bell creates opportunities for teammates while also creating problems for the opposing defense. Bell finished with 154 yards from scrimmage – 20 carries for 66 yards rushing and nine catches for another 88 yards.
DeAngelo Williams saw only one carry in Week 5 and gained zero yards. He had no receptions and no targets.

Fantasy Goo: Le'Veon is no doubt getting the "Bell Cow" treatment in the steel city while Williams is now strictly a handcuff option. If there is roster space available on your team, he is a good handcuff option for Le'Veon Bell, but at this point he is nothing more. With an increasing number of teams coming up to their bye week, it may be difficult to continue to find roster space for him.
But I urge you as a Bell and D'Lo owner do not drop him as Le'Veon has had durability issues in the past and Williams has proven he can step in and have RB1 production.

Owner 1 says YES!! Owner 2 says SHIT!!

Bell's teammates are certainly ready for his familiar No. 26 to join them, particularly after a three-hour reality check at the hands of the Eagles.

Pyro's take: Bell's teammates are certainly ready for his familiar No. 26 to join them, particularly after a three-hour reality check at the hands of the Eagles. "He brings a lot of energy to the huddle," left tackle Alejandro Villaneuva said.

Fantasy Goo: Owners of DeAngelo Williams will have to move him down in their roster as he is no longer playable unless something happens with Bell this season. As for Le’Veon it is time to break out the party hats because Bell is about to lead many owners to the fantasy playoffs. With an unusual start to 2016 taking place we could use some guarantee plays and Bell is the best guarantee play at RB there is.

DeAngelo the Happy Backup

DeAngelo Williams filling in more than admirably like he did last season.

Pyro's take: DeAngelo Williams filling in more than admirably like he did last season. Williams rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries.

Fantasy Goo: DeAngelo Williams is a blessing for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Last year, Williams flat out kicked the shit out of everyone. He is supposed to be too old to do what he is doing but,he doesn’t know that though. He has two more starts before Le’Veon Bell comes back to take the lead back role. I picked Williams up in a league and love it. I also used him in some DFS contests. Play him whenever Bell cannot be the man. It is always a good idea to scope situations like this out before your draft. It can pay off for you. Bell has been a bit injury prone so, Williams could see more work sometime later in 2016. For now, you have 2 more weeks of payoff!

2 for the Money

It is the second consecutive season in which the onetime All-Pro halfback will start on the suspended list for violating the NFL’s policy and program for substances of abuse.

Pyro's take: It is the second consecutive season in which the onetime All-Pro halfback will start on the suspended list for violating the NFL’s policy and program for substances of abuse. For the second consecutive year, the league reduced his penalty by one game, but that can hardly be any solace for the Steelers organization. Originally a four-game suspension, the NFL reduced it to three on appeal.

Fantasy Goo: Déjà vu is the phenomenon of having the strong sensation that an event or experience currently being experienced has already been experienced in the past. For fantasy purposes 3 games is still better than 4 so you will want to update your tiers with Bell going up a tad. Le'Veon Bell would probably be the first RB taken in most leagues had he just followed the rules. It is not a bad idea to draft Bell in round 2 if you can and then grab DeAngelo Williams later since Williams has been a dominator in his own right in Pittsburgh with the starting role. In 2015 DeAngelo averaged 4.5 per carry and had 11 rushing touchdowns so, maybe you will consider grabbing both of them.

Le'Veon Bell Is Facings A Four Game Suspension For A Missed Drug Test

Pittsburgh Steelers running back

Pyro's take: Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell is facing a possible four game suspension for a missed drug test, according to reports.

Fantasy Goo: Bell is currently appealing the suspension, but he may have a hard time winning given that he was suspended last year for three games for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. This certainly isn't good news for Bell's fantasy outlook, but he could possibly be had at a discount during drafts if he were to miss time. Were Bell to miss games, DeAngelo Williams would become an instant RB1 and worth grabbing in earlier rounds given the circumstances.

DeAngelo Williams To Be More involved In Two Back Sets In Steelers Offense This Season

In an interview

Pyro's take: In an interview with Mike Prisuta, Le'Veon Bell states that he believes that there are "definitely going to be packages where me and 'D-Lo' are going to be out there at the same time". The Steelers are trying to find ways to replace the suspended Martavis Bryant in the offense, and incorporating DeAngelo Williams may be one possible solution. (Steelers.com)

Fantasy Goo: After Bell went down in Week 8 with a knee injury, Williams hit the ground running replacing him, finishing as the RB1 in standard scoring from Week 9 on. If the Steelers are able to find ways to keep him on the field, Williams may hold value other than just being a handcuff to Bell. The situation is worth monitoring.

Le'Veon Ready To Answer The Bell At Steelers Camp

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell

Pyro's take: Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (PCL/MCL) believes he would be available for training camp. "I'm going to be ready," Bell said via ESPN. "The biggest thing for me is getting mentally ready for getting hit and things like that, and I don't think I'll really get tackled until a preseason game or maybe in the regular season. I don't think I'll actually hit the ground or get tackled. But when that does happen, I'll be ready for it. But cutting, running routes, picking them and putting them on my feet, everything is back to normal." Bell is recovering from a torn PCL and MCL suffered during Week 8 of the 2015 regular season.

Fantasy Goo: Le'Veon Bell is one of the biggest names to watch heading into the 2016 regular season, especially for fantasy football purposes. The elusive running back is expected to be a top-five pick in most fantasy leagues and his injury status and availability for the regular season was a worry for most owners for the majority of the offseason. Bell, when healthy is arguably the top player at his position and should be considered that entering the upcoming campaign. That being said I would highly recommend handcuffing Le'Veon with DeAngelo Williams due to Bell's injury history and the fact that when Williams was in he was an RB1.

DeAngelo Cleared For Takeoff

DeAngelo Williams / DeAngelo Williams (foot) has been cleared for workouts. Pittsburgh Steelers: @Steelers News

Pyro's take: DeAngelo Williams / DeAngelo Williams (foot) has been cleared for workouts. Pittsburgh Steelers: @Steelers News

Fantasy Goo: So you are looking for someone that your friends will not care to draft? DeAngelo Williams may be 33 years old and frustrated you while he was in Carolina but, while in Pittsburgh he has been excellent. In 2015, Williams rushed 200 times for 907 yards at a 4.5 yards per carry clip with 11 touchdowns! Williams had 4 seasons in Carolina where he averaged 5 or more YPC so; DeAngelo is capable when on the field. LeVeon Bell has had 2 knee injuries in his young career and another will open the door to DeAngelo playing like a RB1 again. PPR alert as well because Williams caught 40 passes for 367 yards last year. If you are lucky enough to have a fantasy league that has “extra” roster spaces I highly recommend drafting Williams late and let him sit. If you waive him you might not get him back and if he is presented the starting gig again you will probably not win him off the waiver wire.

DeAngelo Williams cleared for workouts

Pyro's take: Great news for fantasy owners. He is a viable option especially for Le'Veon Bell owners, as he played well when Bell went down with injury. He has very little value outside of that.

Williams finished the season with 200 carries and rushed for 907-yards and 11 touchdowns. He also added 40 receptions 367-yards.

DeAngelo Williams (foot) is "not looking good" and has an "uphill battle" to be ready for the Divisional Round against the Broncos.

Pyro's take: Ian Rapoport via Twitter "What are the chances #Steelers RB DeAngelo Williams plays this week vs #Broncos? "Not looking good," source said. He has an uphill battle"

If Williams can't play, Fitzgerald Toussaint and Jordan Todman will again form a committee

DeAngelo Williams (illness) is probable for Week 15

Pyro's take: He will be out on the field on Sunday, but dont expect the Broncos defense to go lightly on him.

DeAngelo Williams will look to bounce back from mediocre performance

Pyro's take: DeAngelo Williams' 17-carry, 54-yard performance in Week 10 tempered expectations, but expect a resurgence from Williams in Seattle, despite the Seahawks allowing the fifth-fewest rushing yards in the NFL. The bye week gave Williams a chance to heal his foot injury, and Williams has averaged 21.3 carries in four starts. Defenses are respecting the Steelers' downfield threats and sometimes daring them to run as a result. Cleveland sold out on the run, resulting in a stoppage for Williams but big passing gains for Ben Roethlisberger. -- Jeremy Fowler

DeAngelo Williams (foot) did not practice Wednesday.

DeAngelo Williams (foot) is making good progress, and should be ready for Sunday's game against the Browns.

Pyro's take: Tomlin said Williams could miss practice time Wednesday, and the team will monitor his progress during the week. Tomlin was non-committal on Williams’ late-week availability, though I'm hearing his progress is good and this shouldn't hinder his status for the Browns game.-Per ESPN

Steve Reed has mentioned via twitter that "Rivera calls DeAngelo Williams "day by day," wouldn't declare a starter moving forward at RB even after Stewart runs for 155."

Pyro's take: In Carolina there is running back by committee, and that will always be the case, unless someone goes down with an injury. Its a horrible situation for fantasy owners, but thats how Carolina runs their offense.

So, it doesnt matter if Stewart drops a line of 20-155-1 against a pitiful Saints defense

According to David Newton, Panters reporter for ESPN, has stated that "Rivera says no concern with DeAngelo Williams (foot). Expects him on the field tomorrow."

Pyro's take: "River Boat" Ron wants DeAngelo Williams on the field, because Jonathan Stewarts progress is unknown. He faces the Falcons and their poor run defense, so dont assume he is worth much. A reach for flex duty.

Returning Thursday

DeAngelo Williams looks like he will be on the return track. Max Henson has reported through twitter that "Rivera expects DeAngelo Williams to play Thursday."

Pyro's take: Hello and good-bye to any value that Jonathan Stewart was displaying. As we know that when Carolina's has healthy running backs, they are virtually worthless.
