Deion Branch

Seattle Seahawks

Bloated

He is small even for a slot receiver in this league.  After winning a Super Bowl MVP in February of 2005, Branch followed that up with the best individual season of his career, catching  nearly 1,000 yards and five TDs for a Patriot team that had captured yet another division title.  Confident in his ability and upset with Patriot management, he held out on his team during the 2006 preseason, taking huge fines in pursuit of a better deal.  Branch was eventually dealt to the Seahawks, where he has produced the average numbers that the Patriots knew he was capable of all along.
Since arriving in Seattle, he’s been constantly injured and has managed to post progressively worse receptions, yards, and games played.  Branch underwent knee surgery in this past off-season to try and fix his gimpy knee.

The Seahawks signed T.J. Houshmandzadeh to a multi-year deal to come in and finally give credibility to their WR corps.  Another year with Branch split out wide wasn’t going to cut it.  Branch’s value as a WR is in the slot running underneath routes and using his quickness to find seams in opposing defenses.  NFL cornerbacks chew this little twerp up and spit him out like a lipper of Kodiak.

2009 Fantasy Outlook

Branch has never had a 1,000 yard season but is certainly paid like he has.  Winning that Super Bowl MVP in 2005 was the worst thing that could have happened to his fantasy career (and the Seahawks).  He turned that performance into an over-priced deal with the ‘hawks (one of many terrible 2006 off-season moves) and it’s been downhill ever since.   He should not be drafted this or any season… even as a handcuff.

Contract

Deion signed a six-year, $39 million contract back in '06 that included $13 million guaranteed.  Yeah, our jaws are on the floor too.  Here is the breakdown of the toughest annual check Seattle inks out:

2009 - $4.94 million

2010 - $5.47 million

2011 - $5.95 million

2012 - Free Agent

Injury Report

Red

Not that it matters, but he's only played one full 16-game season over his seven-year career.

Breaking News

Branch on the trading block expand +

Seahawks wide receiver Deion Branch is up for grabs to whoever wants him according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Pyro's Take:

Branch parlayed one decent, healthy year (2005) into a basically untradeable contract, so the 'Hawks better plan on him being around for awhile. He shouldn't even be on your fantasy bench at this point.

Branch back, but limited at practice on Thursday expand +

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Deion Branch was back at practice for the first time in a week on Thursday and had this to say about his chances of playing Sunday: “I think I have a great chance, but it’s up to Coach Mora though. The only thing I can do is go out there and show him I can move around, try to make some plays here and there, and hopefully that can get me to go."

Pyro's Take:

If there's one thing you can say about the kid, it's that he's definitely resilient. And if there's one thing we can say about you if you have him on your fantasy team, it's that you're an idiot.

Deion Branch misses practice on Wednesday expand +

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Deion Branch missed practice on Wednesday dealing with his hamstring issue.

Pyro's Take:

Will someone please take this guy out behind the shed and put him out of his misery... and if he's on your fantasy roster, you're going with him.

Playing Branch wasn't an option on Sunday expand +

Seattle Seahawks coach Jim Mora said on Monday that playing wide receiver Deion Branch (hamstring) was never an option on Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

Although Branch's status for the game against the 49ers in Week 2 is uncertain, it doesn't look like Branch will be ready to go. Even when he is healthy, he shouldn't be on your fantasy team.

Branch misses practice for third time this week expand +

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Deion Branch (hamstring) missed out on practice for the third time this week on Friday. "He was doing some work on the side," coach Jim Mora said. "I think he'll be a game-day decision for us. So we'll have to see how he is on Sunday. We're not going to be put him out there if he's in danger of further injuring that thing."

Pyro's Take:

Branch is listed as questionable on the injury report, but the only real question here is, why in the world would you have drafted him to your fantasy team?

Branch misses practice expand +

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Deion Branch missed practice on Wednesday dealing with a hamstring injury.

Pyro's Take:

Wait, Branch is injured? We don't believe it. It just can't be so.
Rookie receiver Deon Butler is a better option anyway at this point, so the Seahawks just lucked out.

Deion Branch on his way out of Seattle? expand +

The Seahawks will certainly be keeping Housh, Burleson, and Deon Butler. And they have veteran Deion Branch, and Courtney Taylor, Ben Obomanu and Jordan Kent fighting for a roster spot. One would assume that Deion Branch would have no problem winning the job, but not so fast. Branch is slated to earn 5 million this season. The 'hawks traditionally employed 6 WRs under Holmgren, but OC Knapp's system calls for more two TE sets and less 3 and 4 WR sets.

Pyro's Take:

Obomanu is already better than Branch, and probably less injury prone. Hopefully GM Ruskell does the right thing for once, finally admit that he was a moron in the first place for bringing Branch in three seasons ago, and waives bye-bye to Branch.

Deion Branch knee acting up... again. expand +

Deion Branch's knee is once again acting up, causing him to miss a second straight practice on Thursday. This is the same knee that had him out for much of '08 and he had off-season surgery on it as well.

Pyro's Take:

In case anyone was planning to draft him before about the 18th round, this should help to convince you. If he is healthy, he is a fantasy WR5, and with a gimpy knee, he should be left for the waiver wire. TJ Whoseyourmomma (championship!)and TE John Carlson are the premier targets on this new look Seahawk team.
