What's In a Name?

"Hurricane Hester" was his nickname when he played for the University of Miami.  Not bad, but a bit unimaginative.  He was also known as "Anytime" by his Miami teammates, which pays tribute to his idol (now good friend and mentor), Deion "Prime Time" Sanders.  Again, not bad, but not all that catchy.  In Chicago, he was dubbed the "Windy City Flyer" after returning a punt 84-yards for a TD against the Packers in his first game as a pro.  We like that.  However, our favorite was his High School nickname, "Sugar Foot", which he got after returning a kickoff 80 yards for a score.

Contract

Just before camp broke in July of '08, Hester threatened to sit out the season unless the Bears gave him a new contract.  One guess as to who caved.  Hester signed a four-year, $40.975 extension through the 2013 season that included $15 million guaranteed and a $5 million bonus.  The contract was littered with incentives, starting with $250,000 workout bonuses available each year and $18.939 million in performance-based escalators.  Here's the breakdown of Hester's year-by-year stimulus:

2010 - $750,000 (+ $5 million roster bonus)

2011 - $1.5835 million

2012 - $1.646 million

2013 - $1,857,523 (+$10 million "deescalating" roster bonus)

2014 - Free Agent

Injury Report

Green

Hester lost 3 games due to a strained calf in 2009, but he's fully recovered and shouldn't be much of an injury risk

Mike Martz hired as Bears offensive coordinator

The Chicago Bears announced today that they have signed Mike Martz to be their offensive coordinator for the 2010 season. Terms of the contract have yet to be disclosed.

Pyro's take: Finally the Bears have "their guy". After going through a lengthy search composed mainly of candidates who pulled out of the running before an offer was even made, Chicago ended up settling for someone who had no problem ripping Jay Cutler to shreds early on in 2009. In order to mend possible broken bridges between the two, Martz immediately flew down to Tennessee to speak with Cutler after his interview.
Animosity aside, Cutler stands to gain the most fantasy-wise from the hiring, while TE Greg Olsen stands to lose the most. Martz has never been one to integrate the tight end into his offensive schemes, but wide receivers Devin Hester, Devin Aromashodu, Johnny Knox and Earl Bennett could be in for a nice uptick in value, as should RB Matt Forte.

Hester inactive for Monday Night Football

Bears wide receiver Devin Hester (calf) has been declared inactive for the game against the Vikings tonight.

Pyro's take: Hester just can't seem to get over his lower leg injury, so he'll take yet another seat in Week 16. Hopefully you weren't depending on the speedster in your fantasy Super Bowl tonight.

Hester could be back in Week 16

According to Bears coach Lovie Smith, wide receiver Devin Hester (calf) is "getting better" and could come back to action this week.

Pyro's take: We would say that the Bears desperately need Hester back, but with as bad as QB Jay Cutler is playing, it doesn't really matter. He used to be a nice WR3 on your fantasy team, but has become a flex play at best over the last month and a half.

Hester doubtful for Sunday's game

Bears wide receiver Devin Hester (calf) missed practice again on Friday and is listed as doubtful for the game against the Ravens this Sunday.

Pyro's take: It doesn't look like Hester will play, so look elsewhere on your bench for a WR3 play this week.

Devin Hester inactive for Rivalry Week

Bears wide receiver Devin Hester (calf) was declared inactive today for the inner-division matchup against the Packers.

Pyro's take: The Bears chances at taking this game just took a severe nose-dive with this news. Make sure Sugar Foot is out of your fantasy football lineup.

Hester surprisingly misses practice again

Bears wide receiver Devin Hester missed practice again on Thursday due to the calf injury he sustained last weekend against the Rams. It's still unknown whether he will play this Sunday.

Pyro's take: Even if Hester does make it out there against the Packers in Week 14, he'll likely have Charles Woodson on him, so you might as well forget playing him on your fantasy football team for now.

Hester expected to miss practice today

Bears wide receiver Devin Hester suffered a mild calf strain on Sunday and is expected to miss practice today to rest it. He is likely to return to practice on Thursday, but might be limited.

Pyro's take: Hester has turned into a decent WR3 for your fantasy football team this year, but with this new injury he becomes a risky play next weekend going up against a good Green Bay pass D.

Hester has just a mild calf strain

Bears wide receiver Devin Hester came out of the game early in the third quarter yesterday with a mild calf strain. It kept him out of the rest of the win over the Rams, but it doesn't look like it will keep him from playing against the Packers in Week 14.

Pyro's take: We're guessing that with the cold weather and all, it probably felt worse than it actually was. Hester won't need an MRI and will be testing it out at some point today.
The speedy receiver won't be more than a low-end WR3 on your fantasy football team next week.

Hester active for game against Cards

Bears wide receiver Devin Hester (ankle) is active and will be making his usual start against the Cards today.

Pyro's take: Hester should be a decent play on your fantasy football team today, so don't hesitate getting him in your lineup.

Hester practices Friday, 100 percent for Sunday

Bears wide receiver Devin Hester (ankle) returned to practice on Friday and declared himself 100 percent and ready to go this weekend. Hester will still be listed as questionable on the injury report.

Pyro's take: Hester is fine and has a pretty good match-up against the Cards on Sunday, but "Sugar Foot" has been much better away from the home crowd this year, so think about that when it comes time to set your fantasy football lineup this weekend.

Hester misses second straight practice

Bears wide receiver Devin Hester missed a second straight practice on Thursday nursing a sprained right ankle, but said that he will be out on the field come Sunday.

Pyro's take: Look for Devin to get a little work in on Friday and give it a go on Sunday. He's got a nice match-up at home against the Cardinals pass D, but Hester has been a much better player on the road, so if you have an equal option on your fantasy football bench, give it a thought.

Devin Hester out Wednesday with possible sprained ankle

Bears wide receiver Devin Hester was not practicing with the team on Wednesday due to what beat writer Brad Biggs thinks might be a sprained ankle.

Pyro's take: This is all just speculation as Hester also said about next week's game "I'm alright. I'm going to play".
Check back with us to see if you can get him into your fantasy football lineup this week or not.

Hester practices on Monday

Bears wide receiver Devin Hester (neck) went through a light practice with the team today after resting the strained muscle in his neck during the team's bye week.

Pyro's take: Hester should be just fine for next Sunday's game against the Falcons, but check back throughout the week to see if you can get him back into your fantasy football lineup or not.

Bears' first team to get extended playing time Saturday

Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith said that the first team will "play into the second quarter" in their first preseason game against the Buffalo Bills Saturday night.

Pyro's take: This is what we're talkin about. Most teams usually keep their starters in one or two series in the first preseason game, so this should make for some interesting and exciting action for Bears' fans as they get to see new QB Jay Cutler lead the offense for the first time.

Bears' WR Hester making tangible progress

Bears' stand-out punt/kick returner, Devin Hester, started the transition to WR last season with moderate success, but seems to be getting better each day he spends with cannon-arm Jay Cutler. On a play in practice, Cutler chucked one downfield that appeared headed straight into MLB Urlacher's hands, but Hester made an adjustment back on the ball, shielded it, and made the grab. A play, he claimed, he wouldn't have made just one year ago.

Pyro's take: This situation has the potential to return some pretty steep returns. We are Chicago guys, and must temper our enthusiasm, but Hester will be very difficult to defend if he can pair an improved short and mid-range game with his downfield threat. Cutler has the arm and then some to get him the ball.

Devin Hester still wants to return punts

The electric Bears WR said that a punt return man shouldn't also be a starting WR, but he's not ready to give up on punts just yet. "With all the success we’ve had at the return game, it would be real crazy to just give it up now."

Pyro's take: Hester will split time with Daniel Manning returning punts and Hester realizes he eventually will have to give up returning punts altogether. But he wants to break the record of 13 career kick returns for TDs before he does so. Hester currently sits at 11.
