2010 Fantasy Outlook

The first WR taken in the 2008 draft, Avery tends to get banged up, but if he can stay on the field, he will make a nice #4 or #5 WR on your team.  The addition of Sam Bradford should allow the Rams to utilize Averyʼs deep speed and the kid has shown that he can make the big plays.  We wouldnʼt be surprised to see a 900-yard, 8 TD season form him, but be aware that 70% of that production could come in 5-6 weeks (a la Lee Evans).  Still, heʼs a nice bye week play with more upside than you are likely to find in the late rounds.  In dynasty leagues, he is an especially nice late selection/buy.

Injury Report

Donnie was placed on Injured Reserve and will miss the entire 2010 season

Avery probable for Sunday matchup

Rams wide receiver Donnie Avery (shoulder) is being listed as probable for the Week 14 game against the Titans.

Pyro's take: Avery will be out there on Sunday, but stay away from playing him on your fantasy football team as CB Cortland Finnegan is likely to be shadowing him all day long.

Avery limited again

Rams wide receiver Donnie Avery (shoulder) was limited in practice again on Thursday.

Pyro's take: Avery will likely play, but with the Boiler under center for the Rams, he can't be used on your fantasy football team unless you're desperate.

Avery limited at practice

Rams wide receiver Donnie Avery (shoulder) was limited in practice on Wednesday.

Pyro's take: He should be able to play on Sunday, but with Kyle Boller still at QB, you'll want to find another option for your WR3 this week.

Avery suffers subluxation of his shoulder

Rams wide receiver Donnie Avery went in for an MRI today after suffering a subluxation of his shoulder against the Bears on Sunday. The results of the tests are not yet known.

Pyro's take: He was able to finish the game with the help of a brace, while coach Steve Spagnuolo remains hopeful Donnie will be able to play next week against the Titans. However, he's barely worth playing as a flex on your fantasy football team with Kyle Boller under center.

Avery active and starting Sunday

Rams wide receiver Donnie Avery is active for the game against the Lions today and will start as usual.

Pyro's take: Avery will make for a good WR3 on your fantasy football team going up against a weak Detroit secondary.

Avery limited Friday, listed as probable

Rams wide receiver Donnie Avery (shoulder) was limited in practice on Friday and is listed as probable on the team's Week 8 injury report.

Pyro's take: Avery will be in there, and should be a pretty good WR3 on your fantasy football team this weekend going up against the Lions.

Avery active for game against Colts

Rams wide receiver Donnie Avery (hip) has been declared active for the game against the Colts and will start on Sunday.

Pyro's take: If you have better options on your fantasy football bench, we'd go with them, but Avery won't be the worst WR3 play you can make this week.

Avery returns to practice in full Friday

Rams wide receiver Donnie Avery (hip) returned to full participation at practice on Friday and reported he had “no problem at all” with his hip.

Pyro's take: The Rams are going to have to pass against the Colts as Manning will look to go up early on them, so Avery might be playable on your fantasy football team this Sunday, but don't expect much from him.

Avery returns to limited practice Thursday

Rams wide receiver Donnie Avery (hip) returned to a limited practice with the team on Thursday.

Pyro's take: The Rams have no shot whatsoever at beating the Colts this weekend, but if Avery gets on the field, they at least have a shot at scoring. Sit him for a week on your fantasy football bench.

Avery held out of Wednesday practice

Rams wide receiver Donnie Avery missed Wednesday's practice due to the hip injury sustained in the team's overtime loss to the Jaguars on Sunday. "I thought he felt good on Monday and Tuesday, but when he came out today and tried to loosen it up, it tightened up on him," said coach Steve Spagnuolo.

Pyro's take: The Rams certainly don't want to push their best receiver into further injury, so expect them to take it easy on him this week. Check back to see if he's worth playing on your fantasy football team this week.

Rams optimistic Avery will play Sunday

The St. Louis Rams are hoping that wide receiver Donnie Avery plays against the Colts on Sunday despite his injured hip.

Pyro's take: Avery will be fine. He'll be out there against the Colts on Sunday, who happen to have one of the stingiest pass defenses in the league. He's not a suggested fantasy football play in Week 7.

Avery "day to day" with bruised hip

The MRI taken on Rams WR Donnie Avery's hip came back showing that the injury is just a bruise and that there is nothing more to be worried about.

Pyro's take: Wish we could say the same for the whole Rams team...
Avery is just a spin of the roulette wheel as a WR3 on your fantasy football team with either Bulger or Boller under center.

Avery getting more tests on hip Monday

Rams wide receiver Donnie Avery had an X-ray taken on his injured hip yesterday that showed to be clean, so he'll be getting an MRI taken today just to make sure nothing more is wrong.

Pyro's take: This is the same hip that took Avery out of training camp for quite awhile last year, so he needs to be overly-cautious at this point.
Being on St. Louis makes him close to unplayable on your fantasy football team this year. Too much of a crap-shoot.

Rams receivers Avery and Burton both questionable

Rams wide receivers Donnie Avery (hamstring) and Keenan Burton (hamstring) are both listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Vikings.

Pyro's take: Neither one is a recommended play on Sunday's while Avery is the only possibility for your fantasy football team at all this year. Sit them both this weekend.

X-rays negative on Donnie Avery's ribs

Rams wide receiver Donnie Avery took a shot to the ribs on Sunday that required X-rays, which turned out to be negative. "We think he's going to be OK," coach Steve Spagnuolo said. "He's a little bit sore."

Pyro's take: Avery has had an atrocious year thus far, but more due to the constant double-teams and a piss-poor quarterback than anything else. He's at best a bye week plug-in on your fantasy football team at this point.

Donnie Avery looks set for Week 1

St. Louis Rams WR Donnie Avery came back from a fractured foot to play in the first two series of Thursday night's game against the Chiefs. Though he didn't catch a pass, he looked just fine and should be ready for Week 1.

Pyro's take: The injury, was sustained on August 7th and was supposed to keep him out 4-6 weeks. If Donnie fell to you later on in your draft, you should be getting great value out of your pick. If you haven't drafted yet, boost him back up on your cheat sheet.

Donnie Avery back practicing, sits out Thursday night game

St. Louis Rams WR Donnie Avery took part in pregame warmups, but ended up sitting out the Rams preseason game Thursday night. Coach Steve Spagnuolo indicated that Avery was close to being ready to play, but had this to say about his star receiver: "If for some reason (Avery) felt great (in warmup), maybe we would've went with (him)," Spagnuolo said. "But at this point it didn't make sense to put (Avery) in a situation where (he) could get injured worse."

Pyro's take: Spagnuolo realizes his lack of depth at the WR position and made the correct call here. Avery is coming back from a stress fracture, an injury that tends to linger, so there was no reason to push the envelop Thursday night. However, that Avery could have played in the game if necessary has led us to bump him back up in our rankings.

Avery appears close to getting back on the field

St. Louis Rams WR Donnie Avery appears to be fairly close to getting back into game action after going out with a stress fracture in his foot back on August 7th. He was originally thought to be out four-to-six weeks, but now seems on track to be back way ahead of schedule.

Pyro's take: It's unlikely for Avery to play in the preseason, but now it appears the Rams WR1 could be back in action for Week one of the regular season. Great news for fantasy owners. The Rams still stand to be one of the worst teams in the NFL this year, but Avery being back might keep them from scraping their knees on the cellar floor.

Rams' WR Avery is already out of the protective boot from his

Donnie Avery is already out of the protective book he has been wearing since being injured about 1.5 weeks ago. Originally thought to be a 4-6 week thing, Avery is already lobbying to come back.

Pyro's take: We love to see the attitude, and we know that the Rams are woefully thin at the position. For that reason, we wouldn't rush the kid back. What is to be gained? Let him mend another week, the Rams are gonna suck anyway.

Rams lose WR Donnie Avery for 4-6 weeks to foot injury

Donnie Avery hurt his foot in a Friday night scrimmage and woke up with soreness. An MRI revealed enough to have him sitting throughout the rest of the pre-season. He should be ready for the week one opener.

Pyro's take: The Rams were already very thin at WR. Crank up the Cheddar Bob Burress and Matt Jones rumors. We're not sure why the Rams were willing to go into the season with so much unproven talent, but maybe they're just playing for another top 2-3 pick again. That's one way to build a franchise.
