Drew Brees

New Orleans Saints

Woody

Check this... over the past five seasons, Drew Brees is 2nd overall in yards, TDs, and completion % (minimum 2000 attempts).  Can you say "Fantasy Wood"?  His only competition to the pole position are Peyton Manning (who is now without Harrison) and Tom Brady (coming off two major knee surgeries).   There isn't an offensive scheme in the league that attempts more passes and Brees is in the prime of his career.

Always Second Best?

drew brees vs dan marino

He came within 15 yards of Dan Marino's 24 year old single season passing yards record.  He is one of two players to have ever passed for over 5000 yards in a season, yet he was overlooked for the MVP in '08 because his team finished .500 and did not go to the playoffs.  He accomplished these numbers with his #1 and #2 pass catchers, Marques Colston and Reggie "Pulls Kardashian" Bush, missing a total of twelve games between them.  What would Marino have done without "Super-Duper" and Clayton?

Brees was the 32nd overall draft pick for the Chargers in 2001.  At that time, the franchise was rudderless and still hung-over from the whole Ryan Leaf debacle.  Brees won the starting gig in his 2nd year (2002) with the team but struggled during his first two years with accuracy and confidence.  The Chargers hit the panic button and invested another high first round draft pick in a QB in '04 (Philip Rivers), and Drew got the message loud and clear.  That year he led the Chargers to an AFC West division title.  Brees was outstanding that year throwing 27 TDs on only 400 attempts and only seven INTs.  He followed up his stellar '04 numbers with another strong fantasy outing in '05 although the Bolts missed the playoffs.  Team management was in a quandary during the '05 season .  After having franchise tagged Brees for the season they had a big decision to make for '06: Do they commit long term to Brees thus busting their investment in Philip Rivers, or let him go via free agency and roll the dice?

Their decision was made for them on New Year's Eve 2005 in a meaningless week 17 game vs. the Broncos.  Brees was hit in the end-zone, fumbled, and when he went for the ball his right shoulder was crushed into two pieces by Denver's DT Gerald Warren.  Brees was now without a contract and his career was in jeopardy.

Comeback Kid

It's only fitting that we give this man some props as he is again making headline in the NFL; this year working on patching up NFL legend Brett Favre's gimpy shoulder.  When Brees retires to play golf for the rest of his life, he'll have one man to thank for his good fortune - Dr. James Andrews aka "surgeon to the superstars".  Brees' injury was diagnosed as a torn labrum to his throwing shoulder, or as Doogie here called it "subluxation erecti ".  Basically his right arm went the wrong way too far... a pop and a tear later, and the upper arm bone was no longer connected to the shoulder socket.  It was brutal.  An incision, a scope, and a suture later, and Brees appeared to have a shoulder... and a career again.  Of course, it was not that easy and this is why every injured athlete with enough money and a brain seeks out Dr. Andrews when they have career threatening injuries.  He performs miracles where other doctors are not able to.  We admit, we had serious doubts when the 'Aints plunked down $60 million for that mended throwing shoulder of his, but Drew never seemed to waver...

"In my mind, I feel like I'm going to come back better than ever after this deal and I don't even want to call it a setback. I think it's an opportunity for me to just get going a little bit earlier than expected rehabbing and working out and to make sure when I come back I'm better than I was when I went in.''- Drew Brees (January 2006)

2009 Fantasy Outlook

Brees accomplished so much without his top two receiving targets for most of the year, it's scary to think what he can do with them for 16 games each.  Whether Bush can manage to stay healthy for 16 games is its own Op-Ed piece.  Nothing  significant has changed in the N'Awlins coaching staff, and with the emergence of Lance Moore (who will play the slot) to go along with Colston, Devery Henderson, and that fool Jeremy Shockey, Brees has all the tools he needs to roll in '09.

Brees's stats over the last five years are undeniable.  Since he and Coach Sean Payton arrived three years ago, no team has attempted more passes than the Saints at a whopping 1,868.  This is the stat that puts him over the top.  Brees should throw another 4,500+ yards to go along with TDs in the 30's.  We are deadlocked as to who should be made the #1 fantasy QB.  Half of us think Brees and the other half Brady.  So it will probably be Manning.  For now, Brees is a top-two QB, and check the Daily Pill and our Newsbreakers for the latest.  We will do some Op-Ed on this topic in mid-late August.

Contract

Drew enters the 4th year of a $60 million contract.  $20 million of it was guaranteed and the rest is below.  We don't feel this should be a factor when evaluating Drew's ranking in the least:

2009 - $9.8 million

2010 - $9.8 million

2011 - $9.8 million

2012 - Free Agent

Mark Brunell - Not a strong insurance policy for Brees, but is worth a flier in the last round of your draft given how much the Saints love to pass.

Breaking News

Super Bowl: Saints Inactives expand +

The Saints inactive list:
RB Lynell Hamilton, LB Anthony Waters, WR Adrian Arrington, TE Darnell Dinkins, TE Tory Humphrey, OL Jamar Nesbit, and DL, Paul Spicer. Chase Daniel was declared as the third QB.

Pyro's Take:

The Saints only injury concern throughout the week was TE Jeremy Shockey, but he's just fine and will be active for the Super Bowl against the Colts.

Super Bowl: New Orleans Saints Final Injury Report expand +

The Saints list 20 players on their Super Bowl injury report. The list is as follows:
Questionable:
RB Lynell Hamilton (ankle)

Probable:
CB Randall Gay (foot/illness); CB Malcolm Jenkins (hamstring); DE Bobby McCray (back/ankle); S Pierson Prioleau (quad); WR Courtney Roby (knee); S Darren Sharper (knee); TE Jeremy Shockey (knee); DE Will Smith (groin); T Zach Strief (shoulder); LB Jonathan Vilma (knee); T Jermon Bushrod (thumb); LB Jonathan Casillas (ankle); TE Darnell Dinkins (foot); G Jahri Evans (foot); LB Scott Fujita (knee); CB Jabari Greer (groin); WR Robert Meachem (ankle); WR Lance Moore (ankle); CB Tracy Porter (knee)

Pyro's Take:

The Saints head into the biggest game of their existence as healthy as healthy can be. The only one not likely to play is reserve RB Lynell Hamilton, which won't make a difference in how the team game plans against the Colts. Brees will have a full arsenal available to him as he looks to lead the Saints to their first Super Bowl victory in franchise history.

Super Bowl: New Orleans Saints Injury Report expand +

The Saints list 24 players on their Super Bowl injury report. The list is as follows:
Questionable:
Randall Gay CB (foot), Lynell Hamilton RB (ankle), Malcolm Jenkins CB (hamstring), Courtney Roby WR (knee), Jeremy Shockey TE (knee), Darren Sharper S (knee), Will Smith DE (groin), Zach Strief T (shoulder), Jonathan Vilma LB (knee)

Probable:
Jermon Bushrod T (thumb), Jonathan Casillas LB (ankle), Darnell Dinkins TE (foot), Sedrick Ellis DT (knee), Jahri Evans G (toe), Scott Fujita LB (knee), Jonathan Goodwin C (knee), Jabari Greer CB (hip/groin), Roman Harper S (shoulder), Bobby McCray DE (back), Robert Meachem WR (ankle), Lance Moore WR (ankle), Pierson Prioleau S (quad), Pierre Thomas RB (ribs), Usama Young S (hip).

Pyro's Take:

Most of these injuries have been cooked up in a crock pot filled with a whole bunch of bogus and served on a nice soft bed of horseshit, so don't go reading too much into this report. Shockey's injury might be the most worrisome for the Saints, but they've made do with TE David Thomas before, so even that isn't too big of a concern. Either way, the Saints have a whole week ahead of them to get completely healthy.

Pro Bowl: Brees replaced by Donovan McNabb expand +

Saints quarterback Drew Brees is being replaced on the NFC Pro Bowl roster by Eagles QB Donovan McNabb due to Brees playing in the Super Bowl the following Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

Ehhh, decent choice. McNabb had a pretty good year, and led his team to a playoff birth at 11-5, but he missed a couple of games and was pretty erratic early on in the season. Whatever, nobody really cares about this game anyway.

Pierre Thomas sitting, Brees the QB3 expand +

The Saints have declared running back Pierre Thomas inactive and quarterback Drew Brees the third QB for the game against the Panthers today.

Pyro's Take:

Coach Sean Payton had been mentioning this move for a couple of days now, so it shouldn't come as too big a shock to anyone. Make sure neither of these guys are in your fantasy lineups today.

Brees won't start, will be No. 3 QB on Sunday expand +

According to Sports Illustrated writer Peter King, Saints coach Sean Payton said that quarterback Drew Brees will be the 3rd QB on Sunday against the Panthers and that Mark Brunell will get the start.

Pyro's Take:

Well that sucks. Just when you thought you had your fantasy Super Bowl locked up with Brees starting for you, all the sudden you're left fishing for a reasonable backup to lead the way. Get him out of your lineup now.

Saints to continue playing their starters expand +

When asked whether rust will be a concern if he rests his players these next couple of weeks, Saints coach Sean Payton had this to say:
"We're not resting them. We're playing right now. There are only two weeks left in the regular season, and we're full speed ahead with this game that we're playing."

Pyro's Take:

Good news for fantasy owners of Drew Brees, Marques Colston, Pierre Thomas, Robert Meachem, and even secondary players like Mike Bell, Reggie Bush, Devery Henderson, and Jeremy Shockey.

Saints coach Payton says team going for perfection expand +

According to SI's Peter King, after seeing what has happened to the Colts over the past decade when they sit their star players in the final regular season game (five first-round losses, only one Super Bowl), Saints coach Sean Payton says that he won't rest his players and will go for a perfect 16-0 season.

Pyro's Take:

Payton also thinks his guys, most of whom haven't even been to the playoffs in their careers, will be energized by the strive for perfection. Frankly, we tend to agree with the coach on all counts here, and being fantasy footballers, there's nothing more we could have asked for than to hear Sean Payton say those words.

Can Drew Brees possibly keep this up? expand +

With nine TDs and 669 yards, Saints quarterback Drew Brees is flirting with changing the history books. Computed out over a 16-game season, Brees would break both the passing touchdowns record with 72 TDs, and the passing yards record with 5,352 yards.

Pyro's Take:

Can Brees keep this pace? We'll give him a 25 percent chance on the yards, but no more than a one percent chance on the TDs. Either way, Brees is putting up fantasy league winning numbers this year, much in the way that Manning did in 2004 and Brady in 2007.

Brees returns to practice expand +

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees returned to practice today after his mother's funeral services on Monday. Brees said that the attendance and support of several teammates and coaches brought him to tears.

Pyro's Take:

Brees is the top fantasy QB on our charts, and the camaraderie between him and the rest of the team only solidifies our thoughts on that ranking. Look for Brees to have another outstanding year in 2009.

Drew Brees leaves camp to attend memorial services for his mother expand +

Drew's mother passed away earlier this month the memorial services were held on Sunday. Drew will join the team mid-next week for the 2-day practices with the Houston Texans.

Pyro's Take:

RIP Mina Brees.

Wildcat for the 'Aints? expand +

New Orleans Saints RB Pierre Thomas was working out of the QB-slot in coach Sean Payton's version of the Wildcat offense last Friday. QB Drew Brees started the play under center, then split out left while Thomas moved up and took the snap. This was the first time the public had ever seen Payton's version of the trendy scheme, and it's not yet know if it will even stick in the 2009 playbook.

Pyro's Take:

Our advice to the 'Aints: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
