Duke Johnson

Cleveland Browns

Duke of Cleveland

Hue Jackson expects the Miami Hurricane career rushing record holder, Duke Johnson to play a big role in 2017. Reports are that Johnson is attending several different position meetings in order to stay on the field no matter the formation or situation.

Fantasy Goo: Johnson is in his third year in the NFL and is still looking to break-out. Johnson’s metrics are most comparable to Gio Bernard whom Hue Jackson coached and for three years in Cincinnati. If Johnson is able to expand his role this year we could see league winning potential from him. He’s currently being drafted in the tenth round, but his ADP is on the rise, coming up a full round in the past month.

Duke Johnson In The Slot

As reported by Mary Cay Cabot, Duke Johnson is likely to take over slot WR work from Andrew Hawkins who is now a Patriot. This depends on Josh Gordon's status if he is granted reinstatement in September.

Fantasy Goo: Until we get news on Gordon, Duke Johnson should be in line to see about 50 additional targets in 3 WR sets. This number will likely be allocating among Johnson, Njoku and DeValve.

Hue Wants To Run More

Hue Jackson admitted that the Browns got away from the run at times last year and will make a more concerted effort to keep the offense balanced in 2017.

Fantasy Goo: Isaiah Crowell has been getting a lot of hype this offseason with the Browns bolstered offensive line, but don't sleep on Duke Johnson. He is currently around ADP 14th round, he could be the steal of the draft this season.

Duke Johnson Considered An Ultimate Weapon In Browns Coaches Eyes

Cleveland Browns running back coach had high praise for sophomore Duke Johnson, calling him an "ultimate weapon". (Cleveland Plain Dealer)

"I thought Duke has a lot of those qualities that a lot of great running backs have, in terms of being a receiver," Wilson said. Clearly, the team envisions Johnson as a space back, who will see many of his touches come in the form of receptions. This makes him an intriguing potential RB2 in PPR leagues, but he may struggle for consistency in standard leagues. Isaiah Crowell projects as the main runner for the team.

Isaiah Crowell

Cleveland Browns

Mike Pettine expects the running back carries to vary week to week.

The Cleveland Browns backfield just became even more murky. It appears as though it will be a three-headed monster. Duke Johnson is the receiving specialist, Crowell is the 20-20 guy, and Robert Turbin is the short-yardage and end zone guy.

Great for the NFL, but horrible news for Crow owners. He virtually has nothing to offer but approximately 60-80 yards a game.

“If you went running back continuum,” Pettine said, “I think we have a guy at each end, and I think Crow slides somewhere in between.”

“People look at that (competition) as a problem, but we see it as a good problem to have,” Browns coach Mike Pettine said. “I don’t think we’re going to go into a game and say, ‘Hey, we want to get X number of touches to each of these guys.’ Some of that will be a function of what the defense is giving us, how they want to play us, and then at the same time, Flip (offensive coordinator John DeFilippo) will have it coordinated where certain plays will be for certain backs, and he’ll have those personnel groupings tagged accordingly.”

What role does Duke Johnson have

Cleveland Browns beat writer Mary Kay Cabot tweeted "OC Flip said "it's a fine line' trying to figure out Duke Johnson's workload coming off hammy and concussion."

Duke Johnson must have showed something to the Browns coaches to release Terrance West, but with these type of injuries its anyone's guess on how it will play out at this point. The ultimate goal would be Johnson as the full-time back with Crowell coming in when needed.

Duke Johnson Significant Playing time

Cleveland Browns beat writer Mary Kay Cabot stated "Pettine said no reason to think Duke Johnson won't have a significant role in the game"

I would assume Johnson would get a big role since they cut Terrance West. Crowell will probably carry the main load while Johnson is out on third downs and clock management.
