Dwayne Bowe

Kansas City Chiefs

Key Ingredient

Soooomewhere over the Dwaynebow, way up high... Sorry.  So what is it that makes a prototypical WR in the NFL.  Is it size?  Steve Smith will argue vehemently with you on that one.  Is it speed?  Larry Fitzgerald has none.  How about hands?  TO drops balls on pace with the Milf-hunter, yet he is one of the game's best.  It has got to be work ethic, right?  No, if you don't have a strong work ethic, you won't find yourself in a position to play professional sports.  It certainly is a key differentiator at the next level, but there are many WRs with exceptional work ethics that won't bring you the high that a fantasy TD provides on Sundays.

You Can't Touch This

Dwaynebow has good size, average speed, and questionable hands through two seasons, yet in our mind, is the league's next bright star.  But why?  How?  He has an instinct when the ball is in the air not unlike Larry Fitzgerald.  We won't pretend that Dwaynebow has Fitz's ferocity, but he definitely has similar instincts toward the ball.  He dropped 13 balls in '08, but still maintained a strong clip in his 2nd year improving on yards (1,022), TDs (7), and catches (86).  Some guys just have them, and others not.  They are called intangibles.  They don't show up on a stat sheet, and no amount of wonderlic'ing or combine'ing can measure them.  We feel Dwaynebow is loaded with them.

Down and In

Dwaynebow was beaten senseless about eight years ago while out at a night club.  Big deal, you say?  You've had your ass kicked, too, and it's not that big of a deal, you say?  Well you didn't wake up the next day and decide to try and be a professional football player and actually become one.  Dwaynebow did; true story.  He woke up the next day after his beating and had what many would call an "awakening" of sorts.  He decided he had enough gang-banging, and decided to channel his energy and god-given athleticism towards sports.  Who knows, based on his current situation at the time, had he given the beating (vs. having received it), he may be in jail or on the streets still hustling.  Yes, that ass-kicking provided Dwaynebow the jolt that a young man with no direction may need to come to some realizations.

He hadn't played an organized sport up until this point.  He was 17.  He was able to parlay two high-school seasons into a college scholarship to LSU, and then over those four years he developed into a first round NFL draft pick.  No, it's not the most amazing overnight sensation story out there, but its further proof that some guys just sorta "have it".

2009 Fantasy Outlook

There is upside galore when you look at Dwaynebow's situation heading into '09.  GM Pioli handed the team to Todd Haley of recent AZ Cardinal fame, and Pioli's old pal, Bill Belichick, handed Matt Cassel over for a 2nd round pick.  We aren't overly excited of Matt Cassel's prospects in a new system (especially without Randy Moss and Wes Welker), but we are about Haley.  Where he goes, WR production goes up.

Marty Booker, Keyshawn Johnson, and Terry Glenn all had great seasons playing under Haley, and Fitz, Boldin and Breaston went off in '08.  With serviceable signal callers (Thigpen and Cassel) in KC, Dwaynebow's potential is quite high.  Between that and Haley's prolific pass-heavy offense, there appears to be a pot of gold at the end of the Dwaynebow.  Again, sorry, couldn't resist.

There are two areas of concern that we must point out:

First, Tony Gonzalez was traded away in the off-season, and he's one of those guys that teams dedicate much of their defensive game-planning toward.  Mark Bradley is starting opposite him and has a bunch of unrealized potential, but won't command a ton of attention.  Dwaynebow may be seeing more double-teams than ever.

Second, new systems and new QBs tend to negatively affect WRs.  Things could be slow to come at first, but Haley's affect on WRs is tough to disregard.  We have Dwaynebow ranked as the 50th WR on our cheat sheets.

Contract

Signed a five-year, $9 million rookie contract with a substantial portion guaranteed.  Dwayne Bowe will remain plenty motivated to ink his first big free agent contract - and let's be real; KC will be extending him at some point next season.

Breaking News

Dwayne Bowe is active and will start expand +

Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe is back from his suspension and starting against the Browns today.

Pyro's Take:

We're a little surprised coach Todd Haley isn't sitting Bowe today, being the prick that he is. Bowe has a real nice matchup for his return to the field, so feel free to start him on your fantasy team if you're in need of a WR2/3.

Bowe practicing with first-team today expand +

Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe was taking reps with the first-team today in his first practice since returning from a four-game suspension.

Pyro's Take:

It seems Bowe will go back to being the Chiefs WR1 immediately this week, so consider starting him as a WR3 with upside on your fantasy football team this weekend as KC takes on a porous Browns defense.

Dwayne Bowe's suspension is over expand +

The four-game suspension handed to Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe for using a banned performance enhancer is over.

Pyro's Take:

Bowe will rejoin the team immediately and likely thrown right back into the starting lineup. For those of you who kept him on your fantasy football bench the past month, he can start to be used again as you enter your fantasy playoffs.

Dwayne Bowe suspended for 4 games expand +

Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe has been suspended by the NFL for four games for “violating the NFL policy on performance enhancing substances”. His suspension will begin immediately.

Pyro's Take:

Bowe will be back for the fantasy football playoffs in Week 15, but the question is, with coach Todd Haley not liking him very much in the first place, will Bowe even play upon return? Obviously we'll have to wait a month to find out, so keep him stashed on your bench for the duration of his time off.

Bowe motivated by trade talk? expand +

Profootballtalk.com heard through a league source that Chiefs coach Todd Haley yelled at wide receiver Dwayne Bowe threatening to trade him if he didn't pick up his game. Bowe ended up with 6 catches for 109 yards, both highs on the year.

Pyro's Take:

The thought that it was the trade-threat that motivated Bowe is ridiculous, and for a coach to actually yell that at a player is as feeble-minded as it gets. Maybe the fact that Washington sucks and Bowe is the most talented player on the team had something to do with it? Ya think?

Dwayne Bowe to stay in KC expand +

Despite rumblings that Baltimore would trade second and fifth-round draft picks to the Chiefs for wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, Ravens beat writer Aaron Wilson claims that "there’s nothing concrete to the rumors".

Pyro's Take:

The Chiefs have very little going for them, so trading away their best player (who is still playing on his rookie contract) doesn't seem like the smartest move right now. Kansas City may indeed stink, but Bowe still has WR2 fantasy football value.

Chiefs to use no-huddle more often expand +

Chiefs coach Todd Haley said Monday in his weekly news conference that he wants to put more emphasis on the no-huddle offense going forward after seeing the Chiefs put up a season-high 20 points using it against the Cowboys on Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

At least the Chiefs found something that works, even if they didn't win the game. This bodes well for quarterback Matt Cassel and wide receiver Dwayne Bowe and can boost them up the fantasy football chain if the situation sticks.

Dwayne Bowe active on Sunday expand +

Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe is active for the game against the Cowboys and will start as usual.

Pyro's Take:

Feel free to use Somewhere-over-the-Dwayne-Bowe on your fantasy football team this week as he should be able to at least put up WR2 numbers for you.

Dwayne Bowe active on Sunday expand +

Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe (hamstring) is active for the game against the Giants today.

Pyro's Take:

Bowe has a tough match-up today against one of the better corners in the league, but the Chiefs will pass a bunch, so it's safe to use him as a low-end WR2 or WR3 in your fantasy football lineup.

Bowe questionable for Sunday's game expand +

Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe (hamstring) is being listed as questionable on the team's injury report and will be a game-time decision on Sunday after being limited in practice on Friday.

Pyro's Take:

Whether he plays or not, the match-up isn't very favorable for Somewhere-Over-The-Dwayne-Bowe, so we'd sit him this week if you have another option hanging around on your fantasy football team.

Bowe limited in practice on Thursday expand +

Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe was limited in practice on Thursday after sitting out all of practice on Wednesday due to his injured hamstring.

Pyro's Take:

”He was out there today, which was better than yesterday,” Chiefs head coach Todd Haley said. “I was happy to see him out there and we’ll have to see where he’s at tomorrow.“
We'll let you know later in the week whether to start or sit him on your fantasy football team on Sunday.

Bowe to miss one more week? expand +

Chiefs coach Todd Haley wants to be cautious with his star wide receiver, Dwayne Bowe (hamstring), and stated as much on Monday. “Anytime you’re talking about a hamstring, especially with a skill position, you’ve got to err on the side of caution because those things can end up being a long-term thing if you’re not careful,” Haley said.

Pyro's Take:

It would probably be a smart move for the Chiefs to sit Bowe for one more week while he recovers from his hamstring injury. Keep Over-the-Dwayne-Bowe on your fantasy football bench until he's 100 percent again.

Dwayne Bowe inactive against Eagles expand +

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe has been declared inactive for Sunday's game against the Eagles.

Pyro's Take:

This was somewhat unexpected as he was still practicing on Friday, though on a limited basis. His leg must have worsened a bit over the weekend. Take the big WR2 out of your fantasy lineup for this week.

Bowe at practice with wrap around right leg expand +

Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe looked to be somewhat limited at practice today as he was wearing a wrap around his injured right leg. Bowe is listed as questionable on the Chiefs injury report.

Pyro's Take:

We suspect that Somewhere-over-the-Dwayne-Bowe will play, but you might want to check back on Sunday morning before slotting him into your fantasy lineup just in case his leg worsens.

Bowe limited in practice on Thursday expand +

Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe was limited in practice today due to a leg injury, not an illness as originally thought. The specifics of the injury are unknown at this point.

Pyro's Take:

We don't think there is anything to worry about here, but keep checking back as we'll update the situation as it gets closer to game day. Consider it safe to keep him in your fantasy lineup for now.
