Injury Report

Bennett had some knee surgery this past offseason, but he's been running without limitations in training camp and look go to go for the 2010 season

Mike Martz hired as Bears offensive coordinator

The Chicago Bears announced today that they have signed Mike Martz to be their offensive coordinator for the 2010 season. Terms of the contract have yet to be disclosed.

Pyro's take: Finally the Bears have "their guy". After going through a lengthy search composed mainly of candidates who pulled out of the running before an offer was even made, Chicago ended up settling for someone who had no problem ripping Jay Cutler to shreds early on in 2009. In order to mend possible broken bridges between the two, Martz immediately flew down to Tennessee to speak with Cutler after his interview.
Animosity aside, Cutler stands to gain the most fantasy-wise from the hiring, while TE Greg Olsen stands to lose the most. Martz has never been one to integrate the tight end into his offensive schemes, but wide receivers Devin Hester, Devin Aromashodu, Johnny Knox and Earl Bennett could be in for a nice uptick in value, as should RB Matt Forte.

Bennett hasn't lost his starting job... yet

Bears coach Lovie Smith downplayed the use of speedy rookie wide receiver Johnny Knox over Earl Bennett during the Week 2 win over the Steelers. "Johnny's one of the guys in the rotation. We play a lot of guys at that position. No more than that... [We're] pleased with what Earl has done, too. Some games, you get into the game and a guy gets hot. And you play him a little bit more and you go to him a little bit more. ... Johnny just brings a lot to the table with that speed."

Pyro's take: Bennett led the team in catches and targets in Week 1, while Knox led the team in both categories in Week 2. This could end up being a true match-up rotation and should probably be avoided on your fantasy team.

Bears' first team to get extended playing time Saturday

Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith said that the first team will "play into the second quarter" in their first preseason game against the Buffalo Bills Saturday night.

Pyro's take: This is what we're talkin about. Most teams usually keep their starters in one or two series in the first preseason game, so this should make for some interesting and exciting action for Bears' fans as they get to see new QB Jay Cutler lead the offense for the first time.

Earl Bennett listed as second receiver on depth chart

The Chicago Bears have listed second-year WR Earl Bennett as their No. 2 receiver behind Devin Hester on their initial depth chart.

Pyro's take: Bennett could be the super fantasy sleeper after doing absolutely nothing this year. He's reunited with his college teammate, QB Jay Cutler, and he is the SEC's all-time leading receiver- no big deal. However, he'll still be the third option for Cutler behind Hester and TE Greg Olsen.

Earl Bennett lining up in multiple areas

Bears WR Earl Bennett has been practicing with the first-team during training camp, lining up at flanker in two-WR sets and in the slot in three-WR sets.

Pyro's take: Bennett will be the No. 2 receiver behind Devin Hester, and the Bears are preparing him to play every down. This has been a development that has taken over a year, as they have tried to teach him both positions at once, instead of one position at a time. We believe this, combined with his connection with Cutler, will help him break-out this year.
