Eddie Royal

Denver Broncos

Eye-Opener

Eddie Royal opened a lot of fantasy football eyes in week one of the 2008 season when he ripped Oakland for 146 yards and a TD while Brandon Marshall served his one-game suspension imposed by Roger Goodell for his litany of assault and DUI charges. Royal continued to play admirably as second fiddle to Marshall after week one and garnered the trust of Jay Cutler who targeted him 129 times. His 91 receptions are the 2nd most by a rookie in NFL history trailing only Anquan Boldin's 101 rookie receptions back in 2004. After last season ended, many fantasy ballers tabbed Royal as a guy to target for value in 2009, but the rug has been pulled from under him with the departure of Cutler and arrival of Kyle Orton.

His Game

Eddie Royal ran his 40-yard dash in 4.39 seconds so has decent speed. He is no physical specimen standing at 5'10" and 182 pounds. He's got great hands and runs very precise and disciplined routes, and this is why he was able to command attention (and playing time) as a rookie. He is a threat to break off the big play as supported by his TD catches of 93 yards, 59 yards, and 26 yards in 2008. An odd trend to note from his rookie year was his Home vs. Away splits. 2009 Fantasy Outlook

Let's be careful not to chalk Eddie Royal's impending sophomore slump up to anything more than the organizational changes, Kyle Orton's noodle arm, and his inexperience in a new system.  It should be a long season for Eddie Royal, and it's totally out of his control.

Josh McDaniels is confident that he can coach Orton to success as he claims to have done with Matt Cassel.  Let's not ignore that Cassel studied for three years in that offense before assuming the starting role.  Orton will struggle which means Royal will as well.  He was a #3 fantasy WR in 2008 but will be merely a backup role player in 2009.  Make him the 79th WR off of draft boards this summer.

Breaking News

Eddie Royal returns to practice Tuesday expand +

After being knocked out of the game in the second quarter with a thigh injury last week, Broncos wide receiver Eddie Royal participated in practice today and looks like he'll be ready to play Sunday against the Chiefs.

Pyro's Take:

Royal has been a severe disappointment to fantasy football owners thinking they might have drafted the 2009 receptions leader to their team. As surprising as the Broncos have been this year, it has been equally surprising how far Royal has fallen.

Eddie Royal finally getting his looks expand +

Broncos wide receiver Eddie Royal finally got the targets he's been looking for after making 10 catches for 90 yards on 15 targets Sunday afternoon. "I don't know the reason why we weren't able to get him the ball the first three or four games. We knew it was coming," QB Kyle Orton said.

Pyro's Take:

The Broncos quieted their nay-sayers this past Sunday by beating the mighty Patriots, and they did it the way they did it last year, by getting the ball to their two stud receivers. Royal can again be used as a starter on your fantasy football team.

Denver receivers stuck in rotation expand +

Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said this when asked about his wide receiver corps on Monday: “All our guys are going to play. They know that. It’s just the course of the game and some of the personnel groupings... We were rotating in and out, just the way it goes. We’ve got a lot of guys that deserve to play, and that’s how we’re going to play. Period.”

Pyro's Take:

Both Marshall and Eddie Royal had just three catches apiece in the win against the Browns, and four and two respectively against the Bengals in Week 1. This doesn't look good for either of their fantasy prospects this year, especially with weak-armed Kyle Orton running the show.

Broncos Moreno, Marshall, Royal to see more touches on Sunday? expand +

Denver Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels said on Thursday that he would like to see rookie RB Knowshon Moreno and WRs Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal get more touches on Sunday, but won't force the issue if it's not there. "I really don't buy into forcing the ball. I think you get into problems. I think that creates turnovers," McDaniels said.

Pyro's Take:

It only took the rookie coach one game to figure out that your best players should get the ball more than others. By comparison, it took Al Davis almost 40 years as an owner to figure out that he doesn't know football. Wait, he still hasn't figured that one out.

Eddie Royal to be given special-teams relief expand +

In an effort to keep Broncos WR Eddie Royal healthy this season, the team will be looking elsewhere for help on kickoff and punt returns. However, no one player has stepped up as of yet, but coach Josh McDaniels said that the hunt is still on.

Pyro's Take:

This is good news for fantasy owners, as punt/kick returners are exposed to injury on a more frequent basis than other players might be. The Broncos cannot afford to lose Royal as a WR this year, especially with a new QB at the helm in Kyle Orton and Brandon Marshall putting up his regular stink during the preseason.

Royal could lead Broncos in catches expand +

Denver Broncos beat writer Mike Kils predicts that WR Eddie Royal will lead the Broncos in receptions this year.

Pyro's Take:

Kils dismisses WR Brandon Stokley because he doesn't think his body will hold up for an entire season. He also thinks WR Brandon Marshall will be slowed by his hip injury. So that leaves Royal, who Kils said "will be plenty busy early, and as the season carries on, McDaniels will continue to feed him." While this may be true, we'd be cautious with Royal because of QB Kyle Orton's 3 INT performance in his first preseason game.
