Felix Jones

Dallas Cowboys

Flashback

This guy was born right about the time we started playing fantasy football! The year was 1987, we were about to be freshman in high school, U2 was touring in support of their newly minted album the Joshua Tree, we all had terrible haircuts, used safety pins to taper our acid washed jeans, and had just started to experiment with refilling our parent's vodka and Jim Beam bottles with water. We, as every Chicago fan is to this day, were all still high off the Bears Superbowl victory a year and a half prior. As we prepared to enter high school (and were about to find out that it was no longer acceptable to safety pin or acid wash jeans), our friend's father was telling us about this game he played at his office that involved the NFL. We were instantly transfixed. 21 seasons later, we're finally doing this site. There is no excuse, folks. We apologize for taking this long.

Slow Down

Felix Jones will be featured as a sleeper candidate across the fantasy football industry. Before we all get carried away, let's not forget that almost all of his production came against three crap defenses (Bengals ranked 21st vs. the rush, Browns 28th vs. rush, and Packers 26th vs. the rush). He was, though, much more effective per carry than Barber in those games.

Many thanks to youtube's "stchane" for compiling the vid. He must really like a Felix Jones. That and 80's rock. The Sammy Hagar/Boston soundtrack is tight!

In college, Jones was the second option behind the highly touted Darren McFadden for the three years he played at Arkansas. He never carried the ball more than 154 times (2006), but had off-the-charts rushing averages of 6.3 YPC (2005), 7.6 YPC (2006), and 8.8 YPC (2007). Peyton Hillis blocked for both as a fullback. In keeping with YPC progression, Felix managed 8.9 YPC in rookie season at the pro level - but on only 30 carries. While the YPC averages are fairly jaw-dropping, the underlying concern here is that no one knows whether this guy can hold up to the number of touches required to make a difference on your fantasy team. He tore a ligament in his left hammy in week six and missed the remainder of the season in '08. The long TDs and gaudy rushing average have everybody wondering.

2009 Fantasy Outlook

Felix has a couple of things working against him. The first is the Dallas system. Let's assume that Jason Garrett decides to start running the ball a bit more than the last two seasons (2008 - 401 times and 2007 419 times). He is still going to be splitting carries with Marion Barber. If he can manage the 8.9 YPC over his roughly 180 carries, he'll be fine. He'll be better than fine, he'll have averaged more YPC than any back with over 150 carries in history...by over three yards. The second issue he has to deal with is that he won't be getting goal-line carries as long as Barber is healthy. So unless he is able to rip 30 yard TDs off at the same clip he did in '08, his TD load could be light. His best chance for success is an injury to Barber. Barber has showed an uncanny knack of staying healthy - especially if he's splitting carries. Make Felix the very first backup RB off the board if you are a Barber owner - he should be the 41st RB off of draft boards this summer.

Handcuff

Felix is technically the handcuff in this situation as Barber will go ahead of him in fantasy drafts. But Felix is our top ranked handcuff to Barber, and we may as well list Tashard Choice here as a handcuff to a handcuff.

Breaking News

Felix Jones loses his knee brace expand +

Cowboys running back Felix Jones ditched his knee brace for the Thanksgiving game and declared himself healthy.
"I'm very excited to have my health again and be able to play," Jones said. "It was very frustrating."

Pyro's Take:

Felix is easily the most explosive back on that Dallas team, yet can't seem to stay on the field long enough for them to commit to using him. However, the possibility of a long run makes him a decent flex play on your fantasy football team each week.

Felix to be active on Sunday expand +

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said Friday that running back Felix Jones (knee) will be active and play a lot against the Falcons on Sunday. "I feel good about where Felix is," Phillips said. "He looks fast. He's moved well so I think he'll get back into his roll, which could be quite a bit during the game."

Pyro's Take:

Felix had been rushing to the tune of 10.1 yards/carry this year before the injury, so we'll see how it affected him on Sunday. Wait a week before inserting him into your fantasy football lineup to see what type of role he plays.

Marion Barber has fractured left thumb expand +

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said running back Marion Barber suffered a fractured left thumb against Kansas City in Week 5, but that Barber practiced without limitations during the bye week.

Pyro's Take:

Barber was already slated to lose some playing time to Tashard Choice and now-healthy Felix Jones. We'll see how the three-headed monster shakes out this Sunday against the Falcons.

Felix Jones back at practice expand +

Cowboys running back Felix Jones (knee) was back at practice on Wednesday. There were questions whether he would practice on the wet playing surface or not because of his sprained knee, but those questions were quickly answered.

Pyro's Take:

Jones may be the most explosive back of he, Barber, and Choice, but has likely fallen to third on the depth chart. He'll get a few carries throughout the game, but it's tough to know where he fits in on your fantasy football squad right now until we see what the Cowboys plan is going forward.

Felix wears knee brace at practice Monday expand +

Cowboys running back Felix Jones was wearing a knee brace at practice on Monday, but is expected to play Sunday against the Falcons. "He ran the ball well in a limited fashion," running backs coach Skip Peete said. "We'll see how he feels the rest of the week, but I thought he looked good."

Pyro's Take:

All three of the 'Boys running backs are slated to play on Sunday, which would be the first time that happened since Week 2. Which RB out of Barber, Jones, and Choice will have the most fantasy football value going forward is up in the air at this point.

Felix returns to practice field Monday expand +

Cowboys running back Felix Jones (knee) returned to the practice field on Monday for the first time since spraining his knee three weeks ago.

Pyro's Take:

Probably the most talented of the three RBs the Cowboys employ, yet easily the most paper mache'. Keep him on your fantasy football bench until Dallas shows exactly how he'll be used the rest of the year.

Felix hopes to return against Atlanta Week 7 expand +

Cowboys running back Felix Jones (knee) said on Wednesday that even though he is frustrated by the injury, he should return to practice next week and be ready to play in Week 7.
"It's a little tough to go through the off-season, the preseason feeling good, get into the season a couple of games then get hurt," Jones said. "Last year it happened the same way."

Pyro's Take:

Classic comment by an injury-prone player: "I'll try to stay on the field next time." - Felix Jones on Wednesday

The kid is a stud when healthy, electric as they come, but he's only been on the field for 8 of his first 21 games in the league. Wait until he's healthy, then trade that Cowboys backfield off your fantasy football team for whatever you can get.

Barber active, Felix, inactive, Choice to be backup expand +

Cowboys running back Marion Barber is active for the game against the Chiefs today and will make the start. Tashard Choice will be the backup as Felix Jones was declared inactive.

Pyro's Take:

This was pretty much the writing on the wall all week. Barber is a good RB2 fantasy football play this week, while Choice has some value as well and can be used as a flex for your team.

Felix Jones listed as doubtful for Sunday expand +

Cowboys running back Felix Jones is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Chiefs, but that is more just optimism as he isn't expected to play.

Pyro's Take:

Felix is as talented as it gets, but if you can't stay on the field, what's that talent worth? Keep him tucked away on your fantasy football bench and see how things shake out later in the season.

No word yet on Felix Jones' status for Week 5 expand +

The Dallas Cowboys waived running back Chauncey Washington on Monday to make room for a replacement for strong safety Gerald Sensabaugh.

Pyro's Take:

It's got nothing to do with Felix Jones' health, so fantasy football owners of the young stud shouldn't go throwing any parties just yet.

Durability a question with Felix Jones? expand +

Speaking about running back Felix Jones (knee) on the radio, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says the plan was to get him 25-30 touches in Week 3 and hopes injuries aren't a factor with him in the future.

Pyro's Take:

Over the last two years, the Cowboys record is 6-2 when Felix gets at least one carry, so his health is obviously important. We'll let you know later in the week if Jones will be back for your fantasy football team next Sunday.

Felix Jones to miss next game... and maybe more expand +

According to two sources, Cowboys running back Felix Jones will miss Sunday's game against the Broncos due to the sprained PCL that was revealed in Tuesday's MRI.

Pyro's Take:

Coach Wade Phillips said that it is "yet to be determined" how long Felix would be out, but Cowboys officials believe he won't be fully recovered until after their Week 6 bye.
Stash Jones on your fantasy football bench for awhile...

Felix Jones leaves Monday night game with knee injury expand +

Cowboys running back Felix Jones left the game against the Panthers in the third quarter with a strained left knee. He returned for two more plays the next series, but left again after that for the remainder of the game.

Pyro's Take:

If this kid could only stay healthy. Once again, he was absolutely electric breaking off runs of 16, 18, and 40 yards in his eight carries before exiting the game.

Felix Jones to get first start of his career on MNF expand +

Cowboys running back Marion Barber has been declared inactive for tonight's game against the Panthers. Felix Jones will get the start in his place, with Tashard Choice acting as the backup.

Pyro's Take:

As much as Barber has been pleading to play all week, we didn't figure the Cowboys to be dumb enough to risk him furthering his thigh injury. Felix Jones should get the majority of the backfield workload with Choice relieving him from time to time.

Felix, Choice awaiting word on Barber's status expand +

Cowboys running back Marion Barber (quad) will take limited reps in practice on Thursday afternoon after doing some light work at practice on Wednesday. Barber says that he at least wants to put himself in a position to play on Monday night.

Pyro's Take:

The Cowboys should be able to beat the Panthers without him, so why risk it? Our guess is that they'll platoon Felix Jones and Tashard Choice for the game and let Barber rest for one fantasy week. Check back later on Barber's status.
