2012 Pros and Cons

(+) Frank Gore was the engine that drove the 49ers last season as he compiled the second-most rushing attempts of his career (282 attempts; 312 in 2006)

(+) He also had the second-highest rushing total in his career as well (1,211 yards; 1,695 in 2006)

(+) Has been the 49ers featured back since 2006 and despite the talented youth around him, doesn’t look like he wants to give the role up anytime soon

(+) Showed he can still dominate for long stretches at a time for your fantasy team putting up five-straight 100-yard games last season

(+) Not only scored a rushing TD in four straight games during his 100-yard game stretch, but also had a three-game stretch with TDs late in the season as well

(–) The 49ers have a slew of running backs and it looks like each will have some sort of role this season, thus limiting Frank Gore’s chances

(–) The new additions to the WR corps could change the offensive scheme even more to a semi-pass-happy attack

(–) Either way, Gore is due to see a more limited role in the offense anyway with all the talent around him

(–) Gore is turning 29 this season, so a slow-down could be coming

(–) Always been a reliable receiver, but his reception total dropped to a meager 17 catches last season

(–) With LaMicheal James in the fold as a potential third-down back, his number of receptions this season could drop even further

2009 Review

frank gore header - the tank

Frank Gore is a workhorse. If it weren’t for the two-game injury he sustained during the beginning part of the season, Gore would have ended up the fourth best fantasy running back in the league in 2009.  It was really more like three games, because in that third game, the injury forced him to leave in the first quarter after just one carry.  Considering that Gore is as close to an "all-purpose, every-down back" that there is in the NFL, his overall numbers should not surprise anyone.  Even though the 49ers system was supposed to be set up as a ball-control offense, the plan changed early in the season, but that still didn’t stop “The Inconvenient Truth” from putting up starting fantasy RB numbers over his limited amount of games.

2010 Fantasy Outlook

Gore should be primed for another outstanding season considering that the only thing that stopped him from turning in Top-5 fantasy numbers last year was injury.  When healthy, Gore is one of the best all-purpose backs in the league, and with the system the 49ers run, expect him to bust out some serious stats in 2010.  Is it possible for him to crack the big three of Chris Johnson, Adrian Peterson, and Maurice Jones-Drew?  Maybe not, but no other back in the league has as good of a chance to do so as he does.  Take him as your #1 RB in fantasy drafts this year with confidence.

~ The 49ers are looking to return to a more run-based offense this year, which of course helps Gore out immensely

~ A full offseason with Alex Smith, Michael Crabtree and the rest of the offense intact will solidify Jimmy Raye’s offensive game-plan

~ Singletary is still Singletary and will run the ball a ton

contract

Gore signed a four-year, $28.012 million contract extension through 2011 back in March of ‘07.  The deal included a $6.5 million signing bonus, a $4.165 million option bonus in the second year (which he has already collected), and $100,000 workout bonuses for 2009-2011.  The remainder of the deal is below:

2010 - $2.85 million (+ $1.85 million roster bonus)

2011 - $2.9 million (+ $2 million roster bonus)

2012 - Free Agent

Gore is a stud, and because his contract is structured nicely for both this season and the next, it won't affect him one way or the other.

Handcuff

Glen Coffee - Glen is a player with good size, fair speed, and a quick decision-maker, but possesses just above average explosiveness.  If you draft Gore, you should plan on a mid-to-late round flier on Coffee for sure, but keep an eye on the rookie out of Mississippi State, Anthony Dixon, as well.

Injury Report

Yellow

Gore has been dinged up for much of his career. He does well enough to play through pain, but the pain always seems to be present.
