2012 Pros and Cons

(+) Frank Gore was the engine that drove the 49ers last season as he compiled the second-most rushing attempts of his career (282 attempts; 312 in 2006)

(+) He also had the second-highest rushing total in his career as well (1,211 yards; 1,695 in 2006)

(+) Has been the 49ers featured back since 2006 and despite the talented youth around him, doesn’t look like he wants to give the role up anytime soon

(+) Showed he can still dominate for long stretches at a time for your fantasy team putting up five-straight 100-yard games last season

(+) Not only scored a rushing TD in four straight games during his 100-yard game stretch, but also had a three-game stretch with TDs late in the season as well

(–) The 49ers have a slew of running backs and it looks like each will have some sort of role this season, thus limiting Frank Gore’s chances

(–) The new additions to the WR corps could change the offensive scheme even more to a semi-pass-happy attack

(–) Either way, Gore is due to see a more limited role in the offense anyway with all the talent around him

(–) Gore is turning 29 this season, so a slow-down could be coming

(–) Always been a reliable receiver, but his reception total dropped to a meager 17 catches last season

(–) With LaMicheal James in the fold as a potential third-down back, his number of receptions this season could drop even further

2009 Review

frank gore header - the tank

Frank Gore is a workhorse. If it weren’t for the two-game injury he sustained during the beginning part of the season, Gore would have ended up the fourth best fantasy running back in the league in 2009.  It was really more like three games, because in that third game, the injury forced him to leave in the first quarter after just one carry.  Considering that Gore is as close to an "all-purpose, every-down back" that there is in the NFL, his overall numbers should not surprise anyone.  Even though the 49ers system was supposed to be set up as a ball-control offense, the plan changed early in the season, but that still didn’t stop “The Inconvenient Truth” from putting up starting fantasy RB numbers over his limited amount of games.

2010 Fantasy Outlook

Gore should be primed for another outstanding season considering that the only thing that stopped him from turning in Top-5 fantasy numbers last year was injury.  When healthy, Gore is one of the best all-purpose backs in the league, and with the system the 49ers run, expect him to bust out some serious stats in 2010.  Is it possible for him to crack the big three of Chris Johnson, Adrian Peterson, and Maurice Jones-Drew?  Maybe not, but no other back in the league has as good of a chance to do so as he does.  Take him as your #1 RB in fantasy drafts this year with confidence.

~ The 49ers are looking to return to a more run-based offense this year, which of course helps Gore out immensely

~ A full offseason with Alex Smith, Michael Crabtree and the rest of the offense intact will solidify Jimmy Raye’s offensive game-plan

~ Singletary is still Singletary and will run the ball a ton

Gore signed a four-year, $28.012 million contract extension through 2011 back in March of ‘07.  The deal included a $6.5 million signing bonus, a $4.165 million option bonus in the second year (which he has already collected), and $100,000 workout bonuses for 2009-2011.  The remainder of the deal is below:

2010 - $2.85 million (+ $1.85 million roster bonus)

2011 - $2.9 million (+ $2 million roster bonus)

2012 - Free Agent

Gore is a stud, and because his contract is structured nicely for both this season and the next, it won't affect him one way or the other.

Glen Coffee - Glen is a player with good size, fair speed, and a quick decision-maker, but possesses just above average explosiveness.  If you draft Gore, you should plan on a mid-to-late round flier on Coffee for sure, but keep an eye on the rookie out of Mississippi State, Anthony Dixon, as well.

Injury Report

Gore has been dinged up for much of his career. He does well enough to play through pain, but the pain always seems to be present.

Opportunities in Colts Backfield

Pyro's take: “As long as I’m healthy and my guys up front get me the opportunities, I’m going to be successful,’’ Gore said.
Offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski remains squarely in Gore’s corner, but there figures to be more of a backs-by-committee approach this season. “You can go a lot of different directions in that you can feature more things or different things with different people,’’ he said. “Some of that will be personnel-driven.’’

Fantasy Goo: With no improvements to the O-line, Robert Turbin showing life in camp, and Marlon Mack being drafted, I don’t see how Gore improves on last year’s total. He keeps on ticking like the energizer bunny, but I think that cliff is close. I’ve been high on him every year until now.

Gore Finally Ends the Streak

Pyro's take: Gore finally rushed for 100 yards, ending their longstanding streak. The last player before Gore to rush for 100 yards was Vick Ballard.

Mr. Frank Gore a little banged up as usual

Pyro's take: @JoshWilsonSB Frank Gore, Erik Walden (both with chest injuries) new additions to injury report. Both DNP today.

Fantasy Goo: Frank is about as tough as any human being so, this will be shrugged off by game time. If the news repeats on Friday and or Saturday then consider an alternative. For now, this is Frank being Frank and a tough Frank he is.

Colts still without a big rushing day

The Colts still have not had a 100-yard rusher since Vick Ballard in Week 14 of 2012. Frank Gore is entrenched as the workhorse, but this number still seems like a lofty total for this team.

We think guys like Josh Ferguson have a chance to be special

We do feel that (Frank) Gore has to be managed, but he has another year.

Pyro's take: We do feel that (Frank) Gore has to be managed, but he has another year. We do like some of the backs we’ve added. We think guys like Josh Ferguson have a chance to be special, time will tell. But we really like where we’re going.

Fantasy Goo: Old man Frank Gore will get the rock for all that he can handle in 2016. With Andrew Luck looking to rebound there may be many more opportunities to produce this year for Frank. However, there is a little known undrafted free agent Colts running back named Josh Ferguson who will wait in the wings. During Ferguson’s college career he finished second in school history with 4,474 all-purpose yards with 2,586 rushing yards, 18 touchdowns, 168 receptions for 1,507 yards and 8 touchdowns and also returned kicks. Do not get too excited though because Frank does not plan to go anywhere and can take a pounding. File Josh Ferguson away in your deep sleeper category for 2016.

Josh Ferguson Impressive During Minicamp And OTA's

The Indianapolis Colts

Pyro's take: The Indianapolis Colts could have a changing of the guard at the running back position due to the aging of starter Frank Gore, who turned 33 in May. Behind Gore, the Colts' backfield is filled with journeymen and unknown commodities. It appears that rookie Josh Ferguson opened the eyes of head coach Chuck Pagano during his short tenure with the team. "It's just in shorts, but he looks really good," Pagano said of Ferguson. "The rubber will meet the road when we get to training camp and we put the pads on and see if that play speed is the same." (Josh WIlson of SB Nation)

The Colts snagged Josh Ferguson following the NFL Draft as an undrafted free agent and are extremely high on him and it appears that he has a legitimate opportunity to make the roster and see playing time as a change of pace back to Frank Gore due to his skill set. Ferguson is touted as a receiving threat out of the backfield and compared to players like Darren Sproles due to their comparable abilities. Ferguson will have to impress even further in training camp and in preseason action in order to climb up the depth chart and unseat Robert Turbin and Jordan Todman from their spots as Gore's primary backups.

Frank Gore rushed 14 times for 34 yards and secured 5-of-5 targets for 46 yards

Pyro's take: Gore was solid minus the injury and fumble. Keep an eye on this as he may miss no time or an extended amount. If you own Gore you should own Bradshaw.

Ahmad Bradshaw rushed nine times for 32 yards and caught 4-of-4 targets for 20 yards and two touchdowns

Pyro's take: With Frank Gore limping around, Ahmad Bradshaw took complete advantage. His two touchdowns came on pass plays and he caught all four of his targets.

Bradshaw makes a solid waiver wire pick for those that have Gore, or feel he may miss time.

Colts planning on sticking with Gore

Pyro's take: Gore, who is averaging 4.6 yards a carry this season, averages 5.1 yards a carry on 64 rushing attempts in his career against Carolina. The Colts say they have to stick with the run longer. -- Mike Wells

Frank Gore rushed 22 times for 98 yards and a touchdown

Pyro's take: Frank Gore had his best game yet as an Indianapolis Colts. He scored and rushed for 98-yards and didnt fumble at the goal line. He also went without a target. He's averaging 4.3 yards per carry, and has three scores over his past three games.

Gore to be used more

Pyro's take: Frank Gore should be used more this week versus New York Jets. The BIlls basically shut down the run game and it was part of their woes on offense.

With T.Y. Hilton injured look for the Colts to maximize their running game to relieve the pressure duties off of Hilton.

Frank Gore boxed in

Pyro's take: As reported by Zak Keefer from the Indy Star "Chuck Pagano says that starting running back Frank Gore will be on a pitch count, at least to start the season. Need him for playoffs."

Not that this was unexpected, but it is debatable on how many carries/touches is his max. A Frank Gore owner should be latching onto Josh Robinson, he looked great in camp and is the next man up.

09/09/15, 01:20 PM CDT by Vaaal-verde

When Frank Gore tried to block Seattle line backer Bobby Wagner, he suffered a concussion. With the 49ers being out of the playoffs, this may be the last game for Gore. "Gore does not have a contract for next season. And he could not play a role in the second half of a game the 49ers needed to remain alive in the NFC playoff race."

Pyro's take: This is hard blow for an all-ready depressing season for the 49ers. If you own Gore, and planned to play him. look to your league waiver wire, or use the "Next man up!" system.

Gore's carries expected to decline

According to Bill Williamson via espn.com Frank Gore's carries are expected to slide. Gore is 31 years old, and with rookie Carlos Hyde, second year pro Marcus Lattimore and veterans Kendall Hunter and LaMichael James, there is no need to push him, but dont expect a dramatic decrease.

Pyro's take: Frank Gore is entering his final year of his contract and even though its likely that he wont see the 276 carries he did last year, it wont be reduced enough to hurt is free-agency chances. Gore had nine touchdowns and 1,128 yards rushing, with a 51 yard long, which shows he still has "it."

Most likely your going to see a dip in touchdowns as Carlos Hyde will most likely be the goal line back, and for PPR owners he has not caught more than 50 passes since 2009, and has a total of 61 receptions over the last three years.

Its time to put his place as back-up and possible three on your fantasy depth charts, and drop him a tier or so in your books.

Gore is the key to a 49ers win

Since 2009, Gore has played in nine games for the 49ers against the Seahawks.

In five San Francisco wins, he has rushed for 590 yards on 94 carries, with a high of 207 and a low of 59.

In four 49ers losses, he has rushed for a combined 107 yards on 41 carries, and never more than 38 (he missed a game against Seattle in 2010 due to injury).

“They’re going to get Frank Gore the ball,’’ Seattle defensive end Cliff Avril said Monday, then repeated that “they’re going to get Frank Gore the ball, then maybe take a shot or something like that. But it all starts with Frank Gore.”

Harbaugh is 4-2 against the Seahawks, and in those four wins Gore has rushed for 383 yards on 78 carries. In the two losses, each in Seattle, he has 44 yards on 15 carries.

Pyro's take: The Seahawks defense is going to key in on Gore, just like they have in their last two meetings in Seattle. Last season Gore ran for 28 yards on six carries, and only 16 yards on nine carries this season.

The success Gore has had against Seattle has come at home. The crowd is going to be making a lot of noise, and it will be incumbent on the running game to take them out of the game. This could be a tough day for the Tank.

Gore looking to get back on track against Washington

On Sunday, against a Saints team that was ranked 23rd in the league against the run and was allowing a league high average of five yards a run, Frank Gore carried 13 times for 48 yards (a 3.7 average).

The Saints defense is vastly improved this year, but Gore said: “It was more us making mistakes. I give them credit, but we made a lot of mistakes.”

Gore was stifled, save for on 24-yard run. But, as they did a week ago, the 49ers seemed to want to win or lose the game on Colin Kaepernick’s arm. Gore carried the ball just six times in the second half, gaining just 15 yards.

Pyro's take: Gore has been held under 100 yards rushing and without a touchdown over the past 2 weeks. The 49ers have not featured a dominant offense this season, but Gore has been one of the stronger performers.

The Tank has a good chance to have his third 100-yard game of the season, as the Redskins are allowing running backs to score over 22 points against per game. Frank should be able to rush for a touchdown this week as Matt Forte rushed for 3 touchdowns against Washington in week 7.

Pro Bowl: SJax replaced by Frank Gore

Rams running back Steven Jackson will be sitting out this year's Pro Bowl due to a herniated disc in his back. 49ers RB Frank Gore will be taking his place on the NFC roster.

Pyro's take: Jackson dealt with his back problem for the most of the season, so missing this game comes as no surprise. Even though Gore missed a couple of games this year, he still put up a career high in touchdowns this year (10 rushing, 3 receiving).

Gore limited by toe injury

49ers running back Frank Gore was limited in practice on Wednesday due to a toe injury.

Pyro's take: Gore should be just fine this weekend, and though he's going up against a tough Eagles D, he still makes for a fine RB1 play on your fantasy football team on Sunday.

Singletary promises Gore more carries

49ers coach Mike Singletary promised running back Frank Gore that he would not have another game like he did against Seattle in Week 13 when he only got 9 carries.
"He's a huge part of our offense and we're trying to figure it out," Singletary said. "In order for us to win, we need you to run the ball. Just be patient while we find that balance."

Pyro's take: Good news for Gore owners as the RB has a great matchup in Week 16 going up against the Lions. He's still an RB1 on your fantasy football team as you head into your playoffs.

Gore practices, will start Thursday night

49ers running back Frank Gore (eye) practiced in full again on Wednesday and will make his normal start against the Bears tomorrow night.

Pyro's take: The Bears haven't been able to shut down anyone lately, so Gore is a must-start this Thursday night on your fantasy football team.
