Hines Ward

Pittsburgh Steelers

2009 Review

Nothing surprises us about Papa Smurf anymore.  Not.  A.  Thing.  2009 was an amazing season for (then) 33-year old Hines Ward, as he put up numbers you’d normally see out of a spry young superstar.  95 catches, 1,167 yards and 6 TDs, all with a bad hamstring and being the de facto WR2 on team usually known for its running game is really something special.  He’s still the most feared receiver by defensive backs and his heart is tops in the NFL, as he proved once again by not missing a game the entire year despite his hamstring injury and offseason shoulder surgery (he’s only missed 6 games in his 12-yr career).  Six weeks into the 2009 season, he was leading the NFL in both yards and receptions (tied), and even though he slowed down a bit after that, he was still a joy to watch no matter where he was on the field.

~  Ranked 16th in the league with 150.7 WR fantasy points (basic scoring system)

~  Tied for 28th in the league with 6 receiving touchdowns

~  Tied for ninth in the league with 1,167 receiving yards

~  Ranked 12th in the league with 72.9 receiving yards per game

~  Ranked eighth in the league with 95 receptions

~  Ranked tenth in the league with 136 targets

~  Tied for 13th in the league with 15 receptions of 20+ yards

~  Ranked 13th in the league with 56 catches for first downs

~  Ranked 20th in the league with 415 yards after the catch (YAC)

2010 Fantasy Outlook

Age doesn’t seem to matter with certain players… while some even manage to get better.  Hines Ward is looking like one of those players right now, and there’s not much reason to think that trend won’t continue in 2010.  The Steelers former #1 receiver, Mr. Spliff, was sent off to New York after they could no longer deal with the cloud-cover that followed him wherever he went.  That leaves Ward as the most trusted receiver in the locker room, and Pittsburgh will use him accordingly.  Young Wallace will get his fair share of looks as well, but with Ben Roethlisberger being suspended for at least the first 4 games, the offense will more than likely go with what they trust, at least to begin the season.  A repeat of his 95 catches isn’t too far-fetched, and neither are his 1,167 yards, while his 6 TDs look like they could be on the rise as well.  He’ll be a solid WR2 for any fantasy team he’s on in 2010, as long as his age still refuses to catch up to him.

~ Byron Leftwich is a good enough replacement for Big Ben over the first 4-6 games for Ward owners to not have to worry

~ The Steelers may go back to a run-first attack, but that actually plays into Ward’s biggest strength

~ Hines will be the WR1 on the Steelers this year

~ Will age or injuries finally catch up to him?

Contract

In April of 2009, Ward signed a four-year, $22.1 million contract extension (included $4.35 million in bonus money) that will keep him in Pittsburgh for the remainder of his career.  Kudos to the organization for giving this class act the love he worked so hard to deserve:

2010 - $4 million

2011 - $3 million

2012 - $4 million

2013 - $4 million

2014 - Free Agent

Lights Out

The league needs more players like Hines Ward.  He is as hard as granite, both mentally and physically, and is feared more when he doesn't have the ball than when he does.

Seeing Red

Besides doing his best impression of Ronnie Lott while downfield blocking, defenses also must account for his pass catching ability on every play, especially inside the 20.  Hines has been a red-zone specialist for most of his pro career.  Since 2002, he has caught 39 red-zone scores and only Randy Moss has been more productive in that category at 41 TDs inside the 20.  Given the difference of height between these two, it makes it all the more impressive.  Hines creates opportunities with his physical toughness and sound route running and doesn't rely on anything he was born with (besides a fearless mentality).  Perhaps that is why his QB's back-handed remarks stung so badly...

Give us 6'0 or 5'11" with immense talent, moral fiber, and the power to make linebackers  constantly look over their shoulders  over 6'5" with an itchy and highly inaccurate trigger finger every time... and twice on Sunday.  What were you thinking, Ben?

2009 Fantasy Outlook

Hines has rarely been that guy to carry your fantasy team with the blowout 150+ yard 2-3 TD game (once in '02 and again in '06), but he has been a solid contributor since his 4th year in the league averaging 1,028 yards and 7.6 TDs per season from 2001-2008 - and that's including six missed games between 2005-2007.  Nothing earth-shattering... just solid.

Hines is at the point of his career where the numbers should to be harder to come by.  At age 33, he is certainly capable of producing at the level he has over the last few years, but there is not much potential for upside, and to win fantasy leagues, you have to end up with those guys that breakout and return the most on your draft-day investment.  We would not draft Hines at a place where 1,000 yards and 7 TDs should normally go, and we are making this bone-crusher the 18th WR selected in the '09 draft.

Breaking News

Ward re-aggravates hamstring injury in win expand +

Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward had to pull himself out of the game Sunday after re-aggravating his nagging hamstring injury, which puts his status for next week's season finale in question.
"He's just beat up," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. "We'll do the best we can to get him to the party. You know if he's got a chance, he's going to show up for this team."

Pyro's Take:

Ward said that he would have gone back into the game if the team needed him, but also said that he's not sure if he'll be able to play against the Dolphins next weekend. Keep an eye on this one throughout the week.

Hines Ward has setback with hamstring expand +

Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward experienced a setback with his injured hamstring lately and is considered day-to-day.

Pyro's Take:

Ward had a nice game last week after falling off from his torrid start to the season. With the way Big Ben is playing, it's tough to keep him out of your fantasy lineup, so check back with us to see how this situation shakes out.

Hines practices again, will play Sunday expand +

Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward (hamstring) practiced in full again Friday and will almost certainly play against the Packers this weekend.

Pyro's Take:

Ward is good to go and can be put back into your fantasy football lineup now.

Hines sits out practice Wednesday expand +

Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward (hamstring) skipped practice on Wednesday while his status for Sunday's game against the Packers is still up in the air.

Pyro's Take:

Ward did his best to work through his injury last week, but failed to live up to his normal level of play. He's an iffy start for your fantasy football team this week, but check back with us to see how his leg is doing and whether he's worth using on your team this weekend.

Hines Ward ACTIVE for Thursday night game expand +

Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward (hamstring) has been declared active for the game against the Browns tonight.

Pyro's Take:

Even though there was plenty of speculation as to whether he would play or not, Ward is simply too tough of a guy not to. The weather is horrible in Cleveland right now, so temper your expectations of the WR and start him only as a WR3 or flex on your fantasy football team tonight.

Ward says he'll give it a shot tonight expand +

Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward said on his Facebook page today that he will test out his hamstring before the game tonight and likely try and play in the team's must-win contest against the Browns.
"I'm going to give it a shot and see what happens," Ward wrote. "There is no tomorrow."

Pyro's Take:

Ward is one tough cookie. In fact, he's probably the toughest receiver in the NFL right now, so we're guessing he makes a go of it tonight. The weather conditions in Cleveland, however, make him no more than a low-end WR3 play on your fantasy team this week.

Ward officially questionable for Thursday expand +

Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward (hamstring) is officially being listed as questionable on the team's injury report, though the word is he likely won't be suited up for the game against the Browns Thursday night.

Pyro's Take:

The Steelers should be able to beat the Browns without him, but his absence would certainly be felt. The weather doesn't look like it will be conducive to a passing game anyway, so Ward's blocking might be the glaring loss tomorrow night. Check back tomorrow, but we'd say keep him on your fantasy football bench for now.

Ward misses practice again Tuesday expand +

Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward (hamstring) missed practice again on Tuesday and will likely be a game-time decision on Thursday.
"It probably will come down to the eleventh hour," coach Mike Tomlin said. "I'd say it's a mild hamstring issue but having a Thursday night game complicates matters to the point that we'll have to wait and see if he's ready."

Pyro's Take:

Tough one to call, but knowing Ward, and knowing that he called out his QB earlier this year for missing a game due to injury, we're guessing he plays. Check back over the next couple of days, though, as he would be a must-start on your fantasy football team going up against a porous Browns D in Week 14.

Hines Ward tweaks hamstring in loss expand +

According to Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, wide receiver Hines Ward injured his hamstring late in the loss to Oakland on Sunday and might not be ready for the game against the Browns this Thursday night.
“He is going to be very questionable this week,” said Tomlin. “The hamstring is mild, but we are working on a very short week. We’ll see where it goes, but not favorable for him.”

Pyro's Take:

Our question is, will Ben Roethlisberger return the criticism and get on his ass if he doesn't play on Thursday?
Ward has been a fantasy football stud for those who drafted him, and if he plays on Thursday, he should be used as a nice WR2 for your squad.

Hines Ward having career year at age 33 expand +

Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward is leading the league in yards (599) and is tied with the Giants Steve Smith in receptions (41) through six weeks. Ward is on pace for 109 catches and 1,597 yards.

Pyro's Take:

Ward is also averaging 14.6 yards/catch, the highest of his career as a starter. Ward credits napping four times a week in a hyperbaric chamber for his rejuvenation. At this point, Ward is a must-start WR2 on your fantasy football team.

Ward fully recovered from off-season surgery expand +

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Hines Ward went through a full practice Saturday, August 1st, but was rested the next few days. The time off he received was more just to give the old guy a rest than anything else, as Ward has proclaimed himself fully recovered from the shoulder surgery he underwent back in February. Said head coach Mike Tomlin, "Hines is money in my emotional bank account. I take care of Hines."

Pyro's Take:

Hines is one of those types of guys where if you do something to take care of him, he's going to do everything he can to return the favor. You can never put anything past a warrior like Ward, and his recent speedy recovery from off-season shoulder surgery shows that yet again, this guy is worth his weight in gold.
