Jabar Gaffney

Denver Broncos

Franchise Killer

If we asked you what Jabar is or does, you would probably say he is a funky-looking, clumsy Gungan who almost died in the swamps of Naboo.  Wrong answer.  Jabar is actually an NFL WR, and not the franchise-killing motard that George Lucas thinks is amusing.

jabbar and jar jar

JarJarBar was an early second round pick in the 2002 draft by the Texans, but hasn't done much as a fantasy wideout in his seven years in the NFL.  That trend doesn't figure to change in Denver this season playing third-fiddle behind Eddie Royal and Brandon Marshall.  He spent three years in New England, two of which he has been stuck behind Randy Moss and Wes Welker, and he was never able to establish himself opposite Andre Johnson in Houston over his first four years - but maybe that had more to do with David Carr.

2009 Fantasy Outlook

The upside is that Gaffney knows the Broncos system.  New head coach, Josh McDaniels, was the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots while Gaffney was there, so anything McDaniels institutes, Gaffney will have no trouble picking up.  This should give him an advantage over Brandon Stokley for WR3 consideration, as McDaniels liked Gaffney enough to bring him over to Denver with him, even though Gaffney said he would have loved to stay in New England.  Clearly he thinks he can be productive in Denver.

The #3 WR option on Denver has never been a fantasy option, and doesn't figure to be with Kyle Orton under center.  Leave Jabar Gaffney on the waiver wire.  We have him ranked as the 54th WR this season.

Breaking News

Jabar Gaffney returns to practice expand +

Denver Broncos wide receiver Jabar Gaffney practiced with an orange non-contact jersey on this Tuesday after injuring his thumb at practice just over a week ago. He was supposed to be out for "several weeks", but the injury seems to not be as serious as once thought.

Pyro's Take:

Gaffney likely won't play in Week 1, but could be ready for action in Week 2. Either way, he's waiver wire fodder.

Broncos' WR Stokley has become Orton's "top target" expand +

Denver Broncos WR Brandon Stokley has established himself as Kyle Orton's "top target" thus far during training camp according to the AP.

Pyro's Take:

This doesn't bode well for WR Jabar Gaffney, as the two receivers battle it out for playing time. Stokley said he and Orton trained together in the offseason and that they "are kind of a step ahead of everybody else." Even though Gaffney started the first preseason game, Brandon Marshall is coming back and Gaffney will most likely find himself fourth on the depth chart.
