Detroit Lions kicker Jason Hanson resumed working on kickoffs at practice on Wednesday, his first efforts at doing so since having knee surgery three weeks ago.
Pyro's Take:
This doesn't mean that he will necessarily be a go on Sunday, but it's looking more like he will now than before. He's still unplayable in your fantasy league however.
For the first time since his knee surgery three weeks ago, Detroit Lions kicker Jason Hanson was back at practice kicking field goals. "He's not 100 percent right now," head coach Jim Schwartz said. "He's taking it slow on purpose, and he hasn't really opened it up yet... Kickoff is really the next hurdle."
Pyro's Take:
Hanson is one of those guys you want to root for, seeing that he has been on the same team his entire career for what will be his 18th year in 2009. The Lions may sign Billy Cundiff back for Week 1 if Hanson can't go, but whatever the case, neither kicker is worth playing this Sunday... or any Sunday for that matter.
With Detroit kicker Jason Hanson out at least until the end of the preseason, the Lions signed free agent Billy Cundiff to take his place. The signing came after the original replacement, Swayze Waters, went down with a hamstring injury on Tuesday. The Lions held a group tryout following the morning practice on Wednesday and ended up choosing Cundiff out of the bunch.
Pyro's Take:
Hanson's availability for Week 1 is still up in the air, so the Lions had to make a move of some sort here. However, they could have turned to a player already on the team, as WR Dane Looker took over the duties on Tuesday when Waters went down and kicked himself a 53-yarder without a problem. This situation again begs the age-old question: Are kickers really considered football players, or are they just playground soccer players with no stamina?
Detroit Lions kicker Jason Hanson underwent a minor surgical procedure Tuesday morning to fix a nagging knee injury.
Pyro's Take:
Hanson has been a consummate pro in playing his entire 17-year career with the Lions. Detroit signed free-agent kicker Swayze Waters to take his place ofr the time being and it's unclear at this point how long Jason will be out of action.
