2012 Pros and Cons

(+) Has played in eight straight 16-game seasons… he's never injured

(+) Ended up as the 6th-ranked TE last year

(+) The Cowboys should have their best offensive season since moving into the new stadium

(+) His TE competition, Martellus Bennett, is now on the NY Giants while another guy who stole a bunch of his potential targets, Laurent Robinson, is on the Jaguars

(+) The arrival of DeMarco Murray benefits Witten more than any other receiver on the Cowboys due to his being able to draw linebackers out of coverage

(+) As we all know, Witten happens to be best friends with the guy throwing him the ball (Tony Romo)

(–) After two straight 94-catch seasons, he fell off by nearly a catch per game down to 79 last year

(–) Witten isn't getting any younger and is now on the wrong side of 30 and the downside of his career

(–) With talents like Miles Austin and Dez Bryant at WR, it's tough to demand the ball/targets

2009 Review

2009 was kind of a crazy year for Mr. Witten.  He had the second most catches in his seven-year career (94), the second most yards as well (1,030), yet had the second least amount of touchdowns (2) and the second lowest yards/reception (11.0) despite hauling in the longest catch of his career (69 yards).  We’re not entirely sure how to explain these anomalies, but it wouldn’t be farfetched to chalk it up to simple bad luck.  For a tight end, numbers like those normally translate into a top 3-5 fantasy ranking, but the lack of TDs and the rise of the TE position of late sat Jason squarely at the 8th position (basic scoring system) in 2009.  Romo still gave his boy some serious man-love, as Witten tied for the team lead in targets on the season (124), but unfortunately for his fantasy owners, those targets came more in between the 20s instead of in the redzone.

~  Ranked eighth in the league with 115.0 TE fantasy points (basic scoring system)

~  Tied for 96th in the league with 2 receiving touchdowns

~  Ranked third among tight ends in the league with 1,030 receiving yards (21st overall)

~  Ranked fourth among tight ends in the league with 64.4 receiving yards per game (25th overall)

~  Ranked second among tight ends in the league with 94 receptions (ninth overall)

~  Ranked fifth among tight ends in the league with 125 targets (21st overall)

~  Tied for fifth among tight ends in the league with 11 receptions of 20+ yards (tied for 39th overall)

~  Ranked fourth among tight ends in the league with 48 catches for first downs (23rd overall)

~  Ranked fifth among tight ends in the league with 407 yards after the catch (YAC) (24th overall)

2010 Fantasy Outlook

The Cowboys are in line to have a banner year offensively, which means Jason Witten should jump back into the top 4-5 fantasy tight ends in the league.  There’s no way in the world defenses will be able to cover all that talent, especially now with Dez Bryant in the mix, so while the D-Backs are trying to figure out how to get jumps on Bryant, Austin, and Williams, Witten should be the one to benefit most.  His receptions and yardage will either stay the same or go up in 2010, and we just don’t see it being possible for him to catch any less than 5 TDs.  His one big downfall, however, is that he’s also one of the better blocking TEs in the league, which is how Dallas tends to use him in the redzone.  That being said, two TDs was by no means the norm for Jason, so despite his role inside the 20, we expect at least 5 TDs this season and anticipate even more.

~ Romo loves him some Witten, a fact that can’t be ignored

~ With the addition of super-talent Dez Bryant, the offense should be wide open for Witten in the middle of the field

~ Concerning Romo’s love for Witten and the his TD production last year, he’ll likely do everything he can to get Jason his due in 2010

Injury Report

Missing games due to injury isn't a part of Witten's style

Witten finally reemerges

Jason Witten had been uncharacteristically quiet in recent weeks.

He came on strong Sunday with eight catches for 102 yards and a touchdown. It marked the 19th time Witten has gone over 100 yards in a game and allowed him to become only the 20th player in NFL history with at least 850 receptions for his career.

The tight end had just nine catches for 90 yards in the previous three games.

“It’s been a tough couple of weeks with coverage,’’ Witten said. “There was a lot of double coverage in Philly and Detroit last week.

“It’s frustrating for all of us. But you work those situations and stay ahead of the chains.’’

Quarterback Tony Romo was patient and consistently found Witten underneath against the Vikings Tampa 2 defense.

“When you play these defenses, the ability to find those underneath throws and get those first downs, it can really hurt that style of defense,’’ Witten said. “We’ve worked it a lot over the years and it’s good to see it pay off like this in this game.’’

Pyro's take: Witten finally gets back on track, but he is also setting a new trend. This is the third time that Witten has bounced back after 3 sub par games. If you look at his stats from the season opener, week 5 and week 9 Spitten Witten has 23 catches for 293 yards and 4 touchdowns.

In the other 6 games #82 has only caught 22 passes for 212 yards and zero scores. He has not been as consistent this season as in years past, but Romo remembered him this week. Let's hope it doesn't take him another 4 weeks before he finds Witten again.

Witten practices on Monday

Although he still had a sprained foot during the game last Thursday, Cowboys tight end Jason Witten practiced on Monday and seems to be close to being recovered.
"Whatever he had, we want him to keep it," coach Wade Phillips said. "He had his best game (five catches, 107 yards). I think he's better today than he was in the game."

Pyro's take: Could Thursday have been the game to turn around Witten's disappointing season? We're not quite convinced, but it does look to be heading in the right direction. He's a marginal TE1 for your fantasy football team this weekend as the Cowboys take on the Giants.

Witten goes through limited practice Wednesday

Cowboys tight end Jason Witten (foot) went through a limited practice on Wednesday and is being deemed questionable and a game-time decision for the game tomorrow against the Raiders.

Pyro's take: Witten is a tough cat, as he has only missed one game over his seven-year career. Our guess is that he plays, but hasn't been more than a TE2 for fantasy football squads all year.

Witten returns to practice Tuesday

Cowboys tight end Jason Witten (foot) returned to practice on Tuesday after missing the team's walk-through yesterday.

Pyro's take: There hasn't been any words of concern out of Dallas about Witten missing Thursday's game, but with the down season he continues to have, he might not be any more than a TE2 for your fantasy football team going forward.

Witten blocking, not route-running, in red-zone

Witten has been completely ignored over the last three games in the red-zone. He has been only blocking. Meanwhile, it is Miles Austin who leads the team in that time span with 4 red zone targets to his name.

Pyro's take: Witten's owners must be nerved by this situation. We're not sure this is a trend that will continue or not, but judging by Dallas's performance in the red zone, this approach has not been working out too well, so there is hope that it won't continue.

Witten catches a TD pass in Cowboys' first preseason game

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten caught and eight-yard TD pass from QB Tony Romo in the first quarter of the Cowboys' first preseason game against the Raiders.

Pyro's take: This was the only TD scored by the Cowboys in the game, and it was a finely executed play. Witten came off the line, ran straight at the linebacker, then peeled off to his left causing major separation and easily caught the pass thrown by Romo. With T.O. gone, Witten should be Romo's favorite end zone target this season.
