2009 Review

Was there anything not to like about Jermichael Finley’s 2009 season?  Seriously, anything at all?  Well, there was one thing, but it really was by no fault of Finley’s.  The only real defect we can come up with out of his 2009 campaign was that the Packers didn’t realize what they had at the beginning of the season, thereby not giving him the starting nod from the get-go and accompanying targets he deserved.  Oh well, live and learn we guess.  And learn the Packers did, as Finley ended up 12th in the league in fantasy points despite playing in just 13 games while starting nine.  His athletic ability is somewhat of a joke considering his size (6’5”, 247 lbs), and it made him the perfect outlet for Aaron Rodgers when his receivers were covered and an outstanding red-zone option at all times.  2009 was only the beginning for this 23-year old superstar in the making.

~  Ranked 12th in the league with 95.6 TE fantasy points (basic scoring system)

~  Tied for 39th in the league with 5 receiving touchdowns

~  Ranked tenth among tight ends in the league with 676 receiving yards (Tied for 57th overall)

~  Ranked 16th among tight ends in the league with 71 targets (Tied for 89th overall)

~  Tied for tenth among tight ends in the league with 9 receptions of 20+ yards (tied for 58th overall)

~  Tied for 13th among tight ends in the league with 29 catches for first downs (Tied for 50th overall)

~  Ranked seventh among tight ends in the league with 296 yards after the catch (YAC) (47th overall)

~  Set career highs in receptions (55), receiving yards (676), receptions/game (4.2), TDs (5), and yards/game (52.0)

2010 Fantasy Outlook

This is easily one of the most overused sayings in sports, but it truly is befitting of Jermichael Finley’s future…  The sky is the limit for this kid.  He has all the necessary skills to become a Tony Gonzalez-like tight end, including every bit of Gonzo’s athletic prowess.  The team he plays for is becoming one of the most prolific passing offenses in the game, while the QB throwing to him is already among the fantasy elite.  With a full 16 games as a starter staring him in the face, Finley has got to be licking his chops and aiming his sights pretty darn high.  As long as he doesn’t sustain any sort of injury in 2010, he’ll have every opportunity to break into the top-5 fantasy tight ends this year, and possibly become one of the top 2-3 in years to come.

~ The Packers are falling in love with their passing game, and might be even more with Finley getting a chance to start each game

~ Finley has already stated that he wants to become the best tight end in the NFL.  Gotta love his goals

~ After changing agents a couple of times, Jermichael finally went back to the one guy who is able to keep him in line, Blake Baratz

~ His contract is up after 2011, so he’ll be fighting for his big payday this year

~ Aaron Rodgers is a stud and loves what he sees in his energetic young tight end
