2009 Review

Was there anything not to like about Jermichael Finley’s 2009 season?  Seriously, anything at all?  Well, there was one thing, but it really was by no fault of Finley’s.  The only real defect we can come up with out of his 2009 campaign was that the Packers didn’t realize what they had at the beginning of the season, thereby not giving him the starting nod from the get-go and accompanying targets he deserved.  Oh well, live and learn we guess.  And learn the Packers did, as Finley ended up 12th in the league in fantasy points despite playing in just 13 games while starting nine.  His athletic ability is somewhat of a joke considering his size (6’5”, 247 lbs), and it made him the perfect outlet for Aaron Rodgers when his receivers were covered and an outstanding red-zone option at all times.  2009 was only the beginning for this 23-year old superstar in the making.

~  Ranked 12th in the league with 95.6 TE fantasy points (basic scoring system)

~  Tied for 39th in the league with 5 receiving touchdowns

~  Ranked tenth among tight ends in the league with 676 receiving yards (Tied for 57th overall)

~  Ranked tenth among tight ends in the league with 52.0 receiving yards per game (Tied for 46th overall)

~  Tied for 12th among tight ends in the league with 55 receptions (Tied for 48th overall)

~  Ranked 16th among tight ends in the league with 71 targets (Tied for 89th overall)

~  Tied for tenth among tight ends in the league with 9 receptions of 20+ yards (tied for 58th overall)

~  Tied for 13th among tight ends in the league with 29 catches for first downs (Tied for 50th overall)

~  Ranked seventh among tight ends in the league with 296 yards after the catch (YAC) (47th overall)

~  Set career highs in receptions (55), receiving yards (676), receptions/game (4.2), TDs (5), and yards/game (52.0)

2010 Fantasy Outlook

This is easily one of the most overused sayings in sports, but it truly is befitting of Jermichael Finley’s future…  The sky is the limit for this kid.  He has all the necessary skills to become a Tony Gonzalez-like tight end, including every bit of Gonzo’s athletic prowess.  The team he plays for is becoming one of the most prolific passing offenses in the game, while the QB throwing to him is already among the fantasy elite.  With a full 16 games as a starter staring him in the face, Finley has got to be licking his chops and aiming his sights pretty darn high.  As long as he doesn’t sustain any sort of injury in 2010, he’ll have every opportunity to break into the top-5 fantasy tight ends this year, and possibly become one of the top 2-3 in years to come.

~ The Packers are falling in love with their passing game, and might be even more with Finley getting a chance to start each game

~ Finley has already stated that he wants to become the best tight end in the NFL.  Gotta love his goals

~ After changing agents a couple of times, Jermichael finally went back to the one guy who is able to keep him in line, Blake Baratz

~ His contract is up after 2011, so he’ll be fighting for his big payday this year

~ Aaron Rodgers is a stud and loves what he sees in his energetic young tight end

Injury Report

Green

While he isn't considered an "injury-prone" player, his knee issues from last season and during the offseason command monitoring

Finley's career is in jeopardy

The future of Jermichael Finley on the football field remains unknown.

There were no timetables set Monday. Timetables took a backseat.

But a source did confirm that the Green Bay Packers tight end suffered a bruised spinal cord in his neck against the Cleveland Browns. He is expected to seek more medical opinions on the injury and take his time through the evaluation process.

Late Monday, Finley tweeted that he's out of the intensive care unit and had full feeling in his arms and legs. Calling this is a "significant" injury, coach Mike McCarthy added that the 26-year-old Finley is "very upbeat, very positive." McCarthy said Finley would do his "due diligence."

"At the end of the day," McCarthy said, "we're going to do what's in the best interest of Jermichael Finley."

Pyro's take: Finley is lucky to have avoided being paralyzed, and now we are just wishing him the best.

The Packers have been hit hard by injuries this season, which hurts Aaron Rodgers fantasy value with a lack of weapons. Andrew Quarless will replace Finley on the roster. Quarless can only hope to have as good of a first game as Jarrett Boykin did this week, but don't hold your breath.

Jermichael Finley leaves with bad looking concussion

ermichael Finely left Sunday's game at Cincinnati during the first quarter and was ruled out for the rest of the game, suffering a concussion on a hit from Bengals safety George Iloka. It was not a helmet-to-helmet hit, but Finley was struck in the head by Iloka's shoulder while trying to make a catch. There was no flag thrown on the play.

Finley got up after the hit but staggered around and shortly fell back to the ground. He would eventually walk off the field under his own power.

Pyro's take: It was tough to watch Finley stumbling around like me as a freshman in college, knowing that he took a major shot to the side of his head. The Packers are blessed to have their bye week now and will get an extra week of rest for their injured stable of players. There is no telling how long Finley will be out, but if the Packers were playing this week my guess would be he would miss that game. Jermichael will join Eddie Lacy in the quiet room this week.

Jermichael Finley and Aaron Rodgers are clicking

"It's about the chemistry with me and 12," Finley said. "We've been doing that off the field, too. It's starting off pretty good here."

Through their three-drive cameo against the Rams, Rodgers looked for Finley again and again in what may have been a snapshot preview of what's to come when the games count. The sixth-year tight end finished with four receptions for 78 yards on five Rodgers targets.

With injuries temporarily marring the wide receiver position, Finley has re-entered the picture in a big way. At St. Louis, he was a go-to threat again.

"Jermichael carried over what he has been doing in practice," Rodgers said. "He's big and athletic and he's playing very fast right now. He's going to be a big weapon for us."

Pyro's take: Finley has been a disappointing fantasy tight end, but is hoping to finally capitalize on the talent he possesses. He has dedicated himself during training camp and has kept his mouth shut and been a model citizen.

Sometimes it just takes some players longer to figure it out. Finley is entering his 6th season and he knows he must improve his game if he wants to remain a viable player in the NFL. Last season it was clear that Finley and Rodgers were not on good terms, and Rodgers felt fine looking for other options to throw the ball to. With their new chemistry developing this could be the year Finley finally puts it together, and he still has a lot of upside.

Jermichael Finley having "heck of a camp"

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy was asked about Finley, who McCarthy had asked to tone it down with media said this about his tight end.

“He’s not in the media every day, that’s a good thing...That was a joke. But Jermichael loves football. He pours a lot into it. His off-season training outside the building is top-notch as far as the time he spends in Arizona and over there in Minneapolis.

“He’s where he needs to be, he’s in a very good place. I think he’s having a heck of a camp.”

Pyro's take: Finley was one of the most under performing tight ends last season, especially considering he plays with one of the leagues best quarterbacks in a pass oriented offense. There was a question as to whether he would return to the Packers, but he did and seems to be focusing on football.

The words from McCarthy are encouraging, as he has been in the coach's doghouse way too often. If Finley can really focus on football, then with his ability he will have a chance to put up great numbers. That being said, he is still being drafted as one of the last starting tight ends in fantasy or as a bench player, but there is still potential here.

Finley good to go for Packers

Packers tight end Jermichael Finley (knee) practiced in full on Friday and is being listed as probable on the team's Week 14 injury report.

Pyro's take: Finley will play, and will be a solid TE1/2 for your fantasy football team this weekend.

Finley still limited at practice on Thursday

Packers tight end Jermichael Finley (knee) was limited at practice again today but is still in no danger of missing the contest against the Bears this weekend.

Pyro's take: We believe he'll play, and if he does, he might be able to be used as a TE1 on your fantasy football team this Sunday. Check back over the next couple of days just to be sure.

Jermichael Finley limited for Packers

Packers tight end Jermichael Finley (knee) was limited in practice today.

Pyro's take: Finley had quite a game on Monday night, but did end up bruising his knee in the win. He'll likely play this Sunday, but check back just to be sure as he would be a great fantasy football play going up against the Bears in Week 14.

Finley left MNF game with a knee bruise

Packers tight end Jermichael Finley left the Monday Night Football game against the Ravens in the 3rd quarter to have X-rays taken on his knee, but returned shortly afterward with what was being termed a "knee bruise". All indications are that he will be fine for Week 14.

Pyro's take: Finley is an absolute beast and has a very bright future in both real and fantasy football. He's said to be 6'5", 247 lbs, but he plays even bigger and has soft hands to boot. Keep an eye on him for next year if you don't have him on your team this season.

Jermichael Finley looks set to go

Packers tight end Jermichael Finley (knee) participated in full at every practice this week, and though he is listed as probable on the injury report, he'll be out on the playing field this Sunday.

Pyro's take: Finley was starting to come into his own before the injury, so lets see if he can regain that momentum this weekend. He might become a nice TE2 for your fantasy football team, but wait a week to see how well he shakes off the cobwebs.

Finley back practicing with Packers on Wednesday

Packers tight end Jermichael Finley (knee) was back doing a normal workload at practice on Wednesday and is expected to play this weekend.

Pyro's take: Finley looked good at practice, and his return can only help QB Aaron Rodgers and the offense going forward. He's a TE2 at best on your fantasy football team and barely worth starting each week.

Jermichael Finley expected to practice this week

Packers tight end Jermichael Finley (knee) is expected to resume practicing this week.

Pyro's take: If Finley can put in a full week of practice, he'll get back into action on Sunday and upgrade the Packers passing attack immediately. Check back later in the week to see if he can be played on your fantasy football team this weekend.

Finley ruled out for Sunday

Packers tight end Jermichael Finley (knee) missed practice again on Friday and has officially been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Cowboys.

Pyro's take: Bummer. The Pack could have used him in this tough match-up, but will have to wait til next week to get the young pass-catcher back. Keep him on your fantasy football bench for another week.

Finley misses practice again Thursday

Packers tight end Jermichael Finley (knee) sat out practice yet again on Thursday and is looking like a no-go for Sunday against the Cowboys.

Pyro's take: Too bad for the Pack as he has much better pass-catching skills than any other tight end on the team. Check back to see if you should bench him this week or if he makes a surprise return tomorrow.

Jermichael misses first practice of the week

Packers tight end Jermichael Finley (knee) missed practice on Wednesday as expected.

Pyro's take: Finley has already said that he's 50/50 for the game against Dallas on Sunday. He has a boatload of talent, so keep him on your fantasy football bench in case of a second half surge.

Finley says he's 50/50 for Week 10

Packers tight end Jermichael Finley (knee) says that he's "50/50" to play Sunday against the Cowboys after testing his knee again on Monday. When asked about the knee Finley said, “I don’t feel nothing. It’s just the doctors being cautious.”

Pyro's take: Finley also went on to say that the Packers are super-careful about injuries, but that he'll be just fine soon enough. He was starting to become a nice fantasy football option before the injury, so keep him on your bench for now.

Finley inactive as expected

Packers tight end Jermichael Finley (knee) is inactive for the game against the Buccaneers today.

Jermichael Finley ruled out for Sunday

Packers tight end Jermichael Finley (knee) has already been ruled out for the game against the Buccaneers this weekend.

Pyro's take: The Pack probably don't see a need to get their young TE back on the field too quickly as they have an easy match-up against the Bucs and don't need to push things. Sit him on your fantasy football bench for another week.

Jermichael Finley close to returning to practice

Packers tight end Jermichael Finley (knee) was out on the field watching practice today and was said to be close to returning to participation.

Pyro's take: He's not likely to play this week, but should be in line to come back the following week against the Cowboys. Keep the talented young tight end on your fantasy football bench for now.

Jermichael Finley misses practice again

Packers tight end Jermichael Finley (knee) missed practice yet again on Wednesday.

Pyro's take: His status for Sunday's game is still unknown at this point, but if he can get in a practice at some point this week, he might be able to give it a go. He's a possible fantasy football start against the Bucs if he does.

Finley likely questionable to doubtful for Week 9

Packers tight end Jermichael Finley (knee) looks to be questionable to doubtful for the Week 9 game against the Buccaneers according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

Pyro's take: Finley was a real nice surprise and becoming a great check-down option for QB Aaron Rodgers before the injury. Rodgers is a fantasy football QB1 without him, but with Finley on the field, you can feel that much safer in any contest.
