Jerome Harrison

Cleveland Browns

2009 Review

Every time Jerome Harrison was presented with an opportunity to showcase his talents last year, not only did he not disappoint, but he thrived beyond expectation.  On four separate occasions Harrison was given feature-back-like touches, and in those games, he averaged 170.5 yards rushing and totaled 5 TDs.  Not just that, but the Browns ended up going 3-1 in those contests, with their lone loss coming against the division-winning Bengals in overtime.  His season was headlined by a Week 15 effort against the Chiefs in which he put up 286 yards rushing, the 3rd highest total ever in a game and just 10 yards behind Adrian Peterson’s record of 296 yards.  Still, even with a game like that in the books, Jerome averaged just 4.4 yards/carry on the season, which can likely be attributed to his smallish frame and inability to break tackles due to that lack of size.

2010 Fantasy Outlook

Jerome ended the 2009 season hotter than any other running back in the league, amassing 561 yards on 106 carries to go along with 5 TDs over the final three games.  You’d think that the Browns were maybe trying to see if they had a guy in Harrison who could carry the load for them and become a feature-back in 2010, but your thoughts would be wrong.  Coach Eric Mangini knew nothing else was working for the Browns so in an effort to keep his job, simply did whatever he could save himself.  Sure, it turned out Harrison’s athleticism could lead him to put up beastly numbers on occasion, but the Browns are still of the mind that Harrison’s lack of size would never allow him to become an every-down back in the NFL, so they traded up in the draft to get a prototypical sized back in Montario Hardesty.  The two backs will likely serve as a tandem this year, which of course reduces each of their values and should keep them both as fantasy backups in Basic Scoring leagues.  Jerome should still get some consideration as an RB2 in PPR leagues though.

~ Even after a tremendous end to the 2009 season, the Browns still drafted a back (Hardesty) in the 2nd round to run an RBBC with Harrison

~ With the Browns still likely to be playing from behind most of the year, Harrison’s pass-catching and play-making abilities will be depended upon

~ The Browns play in the toughest rush-D division in all of football

Montario Hardesty is the definite handcuff to Harrison, but consider James Davis as a sleeper option late

Injury Report

Green

Harrison has seen his fair share of injuries in his short career and missed a couple of games in 2009, but he's healthy heading into the new season. His diminutive size might be a bit of a concern though...

Breaking News

Holmgren impressed with the late-season surge of Jerome Harrison expand +

"I love him as a player," Holmgren said of Harrison. "I thought what he did at the end of the season was remarkable."

Pyro's Take:

Those are some compelling sound bytes. Harrison chose the near-perfect time to showcase his talents as he will be a restricted free-agent and it will cost any team a pretty penny to lure him away, so expect the Browns to be willing to plunk down some coin for this guy's services, whether its a short term thing or multiple years.

Jerome Harrison active for tonight's game expand +

Browns running back Jerome Harrison (illness) has been declared active for the game against the Steelers this evening.

Pyro's Take:

There really wasn't a question on this one. Harrison should see significant touches tonight as the weather makes it nearly impossible to pass the ball. Start him as a low-end RB2 or better yet as a flex on your fantasy football team.

Harrison limited, but probable for Thursday expand +

Browns running back Jerome Harrison (illness) was limited at practice yesterday but is listed as probable on the injury report and expected to start Thursday night against the Steelers.

Pyro's Take:

Tough matchup for the little guy to be sure, but he can still be used as a flex on your fantasy football team as the game tonight will likely be a grind-it-out game in the crappy conditions.

Jerome Harrison limited at practice expand +

Browns running back Jerome Harrison was limited at practice today with an undisclosed illness.

Pyro's Take:

He'll likely play on Thursday, but he wouldn't have been a worthwhile start on your fantasy football team this week against Pittsburgh's #1 ranked rush D.

Jerome Harrison one of 12 Browns players with the flu expand +

Browns running back Jerome Harrison is one of 12 reported players on the team suffering from the flu right now. Coach Eric Mangini said that he will scale back practice due to the team being so shorthanded.

Pyro's Take:

How many of the 12 players do you think really have the flu, and how many simply don't want to play for the big Man-gina anymore? We're guessing an even split.
Look for the Packers offense to capitalize on an already weak Browns D this Sunday because of this.

Harrison likely to see majority of work on Sunday expand +

Browns running back Jamal Lewis is active for the game against the Bills today, but fellow RB Jerome Harrison is expected to get the majority of the work.

Pyro's Take:

Harrison may again be a decent flex play on your fantasy football team, but Jamal Lewis shouldn't even be sitting on your bench. Drop the 30-year old already if you haven't yet done so.

Harrison to lose touches with Lewis' return expand +

Browns running back Jamal Lewis (hamstring) is listed as questionable on the injury report after being limited in practice all week.

Pyro's Take:

If you still have Lewis on your fantasy football team, drop him... like immediately. Jerome Harrison's value will also take a hit with Lewis' return and can maybe be used as a flex play if needed.

Harrison will start against the Bengals expand +

Browns running back Jamal Lewis (hamstring) was ruled out for the match-up against the Bengals today. RB Jerome Harrison will get the start in his place.

Pyro's Take:

Not a shock at all. With rookie James Davis placed on the IR yesterday, Jerome Harrison will see the bulk of the work today. Harrison can be used as a nice flex play for your fantasy football team against the Bengals.

Harrison likely to start for Browns on Sunday expand +

Browns running back Jamal Lewis is listed as doubtful on the team's injury report after missing the entire week of practice.

Pyro's Take:

Lewis won't be able to go, which could be the best thing for the Browns, and especially for fellow RB Jerome Harrison. Harrison will get the start, and will make a decent flex play for your fantasy football team on Sunday.

Harrison could get the call again this Sunday expand +

Browns running back Jamal Lewis didn't practice today, but instead rode a stationary bike on the sidelines while recovering from an injured hamstring.

Pyro's Take:

If Lewis can't go on Sunday, and it's looking like he won't, Jerome Harrison will again get the start. At home against the Bengals rush D? Ehhh, he might be worth a flex play for your fantasy football team.

Lewis inactive, Harrison will start expand +

Browns running back Jamal Lewis is inactive for Sunday's game against the Ravens.

Pyro's Take:

Jerome Harrison will start with rookie James Davis sure to get a bunch of touches as well. However, none are worth a fantasy start against the ass-kicking Ravens D.

Jamal Lewis missing practice, Harrison gets first-team reps expand +

With Cleveland Browns running back Jamal Lewis still sitting on the sidelines, Jerome Harrison took the first-team snaps at practice in place of Lewis. Harrison would get the starting call if Jamal can't go on Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

The real question is why isn't Harrison or rookie James Davis getting the starting nod over Lewis in the first place? None of these guys are worth playing on your fantasy team regardless.

Jerome Harrison practices for second straight day expand +

Cleveland Browns running back Jerome Harrison was back at practice again on Thursday after missing the season opener against Minnesota.

Pyro's Take:

We'll see how the big Mangina distributes the carries on Sunday, as both Jamal Lewis and rookie James Davis are both dealing with minor injuries themselves. Stay away from this fantasy situation.

Jerome Harrison inactive for game against the Vikes expand +

Cleveland Browns running back Jerome Harrison has been declared inactive for today's games against the Vikings.

Pyro's Take:

That leaves just the washed up Jamal Lewis and rookie James Davis to get their asses handed to them by the Vikings D. Good luck fellas.

Jerome Harrison practices with left knee brace on Monday expand +

Cleveland Browns backup RB Jerome Harrison was practicing with his teammates again on Monday. Harrison, who had been sidelined with an undisclosed injury for most of camp, was wearing a brace on his left knee.

Pyro's Take:

Harrison is still listed on the latest team depth chart as the backup RB, but we're not sure how long that will last. Rookie James Davis has been awesome this preseason, and may end up with the starting job at some point with Jamal Lewis declining rapidly. Harrison may actually end up as the backup to Davis here.
