Gallopin' Galloway

Joey Galloway has been in the top tier of NFL receivers for as long as he's been in the league.  Over his 15 seasons, he has caught 682 passes for 10,710 yards, averaging a fantastic 15.7 yards per catch.  At every stop along the way, Galloway has been a difference maker.  His blazing speed and soft hands has made him a QB's dream.

If anyone in the NFL can run a more beautiful 'go' route than Joey Galloway, we would like very much to see it.  Santonio Holmes runs a nice one, but it's not quite like Galloway's... yet..  Off the line, Galloway hits top speed within five yards and glides gracefully up the sideline, increasing the distance between him and the CB he just dusted.

In spite of his age, Galloway has put up fantastic numbers late into his career.  He has, however, also succumbed to the injury bug missing significant time in 1999, 2000, 2004, and 2008.  For the three seasons prior to 2008, Galloway had posted consecutive seasons in which he caught over 1,000 yards, scoring 23 TDs in that span.  Galloway was the Buccaneers' most potent offensive weapon during the span, given the trouble that Cadillac Williams had after his rookie season and the mess at QB.

2009 Fantasy Outlook

Galloway steps onto a Patriot team already rich at the WR spot.  Randy Moss is only a year removed from one of the greatest WR performances in league history in which he broke Jerry Rice's record for receiving TDs in a season.  Wes Welker has been a great Robin to Moss' Batman, catching for 1,000+ yards in both of the last two seasons and being voted All-Pro twice in two seasons.  Galloway should complement these fellas well, and health is the pivot point on all sides of the equation.  We have an all-world QB coming back from ACL/MCL tears, and Galloway had an injury-plagued 2008 campaign and is getting up there in age.  Finally, in order for Galloway to find time as even a plug-and-play guy this season, he would need an injury to either Moss and Welker - which is not likely.  Galloway has handcuff status, and should be targeted late.  Make him the 117th WR off the board this summer.

Contract

Galloway decided that if he was going to sign on for one more year, he wouldn't care about the price and rather get a chance at the Bowl.  $1.75 million later (plus $600,000 upon signing), Joey was a Patriot.

2009 - $1.15 million

Injury Report

Yellow

Galloway’s career has been racked by periodic injuries, but he’s proved that he can bounce back and produce at a high level, even from significant injury such as the torn ACL he suffered in 1999. A sprained foot could take away from his speed, but he’s had plenty of time to recover and is expected to be at full steam by the season opener. He hasn’t gotten any younger, however, so his risk for injury will be higher than most. Keep an eye on his status as the season approaches.

Breaking News

He's baaack - Steelers sign Joey Galloway expand +

Due to wide receiver Limas Sweed being out for the season with an illness, the Steelers decided to sign veteran WR Joey Galloway to take his place.

Pyro's Take:

Galloway couldn't get it going when he was with the Patriots earlier this year, so he was cut. We'll see what happens in Pittsburgh, but we're guessing more of the same. He's not worth a pickup for your fantasy team.

Galloway doesn't meet with Chiefs expand +

It was initially reported that wide receiver Joey Galloway went to meet with the Chiefs for a tryout after getting released today, but the source who reported the information was misinformed.

Pyro's Take:

Galloway will find a new home soon enough. He may be old, but with age comes experience, something many teams could use a little of right now. Look for the Ravens to give him a call soon, and maybe even the Chiefs... just not today.

Galloway to try out for Chiefs expand +

Hours after being released by the Patriots, wide receiver Joey Galloway is on his way to Kansas City for a tryout with the Chiefs.

Pyro's Take:

The Chiefs could use a veteran receiver like Galloway, so this doesn't seem too bad of a fit for the soon to be 38-year old has-been.

Patriots release WR Joey Galloway expand +

Wide receiver Joey Galloway was released by the Patriots on Tuesday. He is now an unrestricted free agent and can sign with any team in the league.

Pyro's Take:

Galloway was a healthy scratch for the past three weeks, so this news is no surprise to anyone. He could end up with any number of teams, with the Baltimore Ravens heading the list.

Galloway doesn't travel with team to Denver expand +

Patriots wide receiver Joey Galloway will be a healthy scratch once again as the 37-year old did not make the trip to Denver for this Sunday's game.

Pyro's Take:

Galloway has yet to get on the same page as Tom Bundchen Brady, so this doesn't come as a surprise. Keep him at the end of your fantasy football bench, however, in case Moss gets injured at some point.

Joey Galloway inactive against Ravens expand +

Patriots wide receiver Joey Galloway has been declared inactive against the Ravens today despite being healthy.

Pyro's Take:

This shouldn't come as too much of a surprise as Galloway has been just awful thus far this year. Keep him tucked away on your fantasy football bench in case Randy Moss gets injured.

Galloway better in Week 2, but not quite in sync with Brady expand +

Patriots wide receiver Joey Galloway did a better job in Week 2 catching five balls for 53 yards, though he was targeted 12 times in the game.

Pyro's Take:

Former NFL QB Trent Dilfer blames Joey's imprecise route-running for his and Tom Brady's lack of chemistry thus far. He also goes on to say that they will get it soon enough... and we agree.
Keep Joey stashed on your fantasy bench as he could become useful later on.

Despite no catches, Galloway fitting in fine expand +

New England Patriots wide receiver Joey Galloway had zero catches on Monday and was only targeted twice on Tom Brady's 53 attempts. However, director of player personnel Nick Caserio said, "from an assignment standpoint, he did everything right. He was open. The ball just went other areas. That happens every week. We feel very comfortable with where Joey is at this stage."

Pyro's Take:

Brady throws the ball enough that Galloway will get his chance to contribute, but he likely won't be a fantasy factor unless either Moss or Welker get injured.

Joey Galloway battling for the third WR spot expand +

The New England Patriots WR, who was signed to a one-year deal this offseason, is battling with Greg Lewis for the third WR position behind Randy Moss and Wes Welker.

Pyro's Take:

Galloway is an ancient 37 years old, but he's still got some juice. He leads all active players who have at least 300 catches with a 15.7 career YPC average, and he was returning punts the other day at practice. Brady will look his way a fair amount as teams zero in on Moss and Welker.
