Josh McCown

Cleveland Browns

McCown in a Nutshell

There are three things that you need know about Josh McCown:

1)      He blows.  In the three seasons he played for a Division I school (SMU) before transferring to a Division II school (Sam Houston State), he threw for 24 TDs while also tossing up 34 INTs.  He has done his best to maintain that TD/INT ratio as his current count in the NFL is 35 TDs on 40 INTs.  How he continues to earn a roster spot in the NFL escapes us.

2)      After being drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the 3rd round of the 2002 draft, the coach of the Cardinals at the time, Dennis Green, had this to say about him: "I think he's going to be a great one.  When I buy into a quarterback, I really do."

3)      McCown has made four 4th-quarter comebacks in his career, but there was one in particular that stands out:

In the final week of the 2003-04 season, McCown was thrown in to start for the lowly Cards against the Vikings, who were still fighting for the best record in their division and a playoff spot.  It was 4th and 25 from the Minnesota 27-yard line and the Cards were down 17-12.  Arizona snapped the ball with 4 seconds left in the game and after the final horn sounded, McCown tossed the ball up in the air.  Sure enough, Cardinals receiver Nathan Poole came down with the ball in the end zone, thus ending the season for the Vikings while also making them just the 2nd team ever not to make the playoffs after starting the season 6-0.

The significance of this one play is two-fold.  First, the Cardinal victory knocked them out of the #1 pick slot and pushed them down to #3 where they ended up selecting their all-world WR Larry Fitzgerald.  Second, at the conclusion of the above game, Vikings play by play guy, Paul Allen, almost went into cardiac arrest.

What we're saying about McCown here is that even though he somehow keeps the interest of NFL teams enough to roster him AND pay him seven figure salaries, it might simply be because of the odd luck he brings - we hear Paul Allen is among the most grating NFL radio guys.  Go figure.

Injury Report

Tough to get injured when you can’t earn a starting gig.

Jets Sign McCown, Cancel Date With Cutler

Pyro's take: Yesterday, the Jets signed FA QB Josh McCown to a one year deal. They also canceled a meeting with Jay Cutler, eliminating one more possible landing spot for Cutler.

Fantasy Goo: McCown could be a surprise sleeper this season. Look back to 2013 with the Bears throwing to Jeffery and Marshall he had 1829 yards, 13 TDs and 1 INT in 5 starts. Similarity: Robby Anderson and Quincy Enunwa are 6'3" and 6'2" respectively.

Cody Kessler Will Start Vs Dallas

Pyro's take: The Cleveland Browns named QB Cody Kessler the starting quarterback for Week 9 against the Dallas Cowboys.

Fantasy Goo: Kessler will start over Josh McCown against Dallas. He missed last week's contest with a concussion but was able to practice this week and cleared for Sunday. Kessler is a mid-range QB2 streamer in a tough matchup facing a Cowboys defense that will be without two starters in the secondary. With the expectation that Cleveland will be playing from behind in this one, Kessler could put up decent garbage time numbers.

McCown Goes Down

Pyro's take: Cleveland Brown's defensive coordinator Ray Horton revealed to media that Josh McCown finished the game versus Baltimore with a fractured left collarbone.

Fantasy goo: There was already minimal optimism regarding McCown's ability to return to the playing field sooner rather than later, but this news stings a little. Though no official timeline has been stated for his return, a fractured clavicle typically takes roughly 8 weeks to heal.

Cody Kessler Will Start Week Three For Cleveland

Cody Kessler

Pyro's take: Cody Kessler will start Week three against the Miami Dolphins in place of injured QB Josh McCown. It will be the rookie's first NFL start.

Fantasy Goo: This was certainly not the plan at the beginning of the season, but injuries to Griffin and McCown have forced the Browns' hand. Kessler shouldn't be considered for fantasy purposes yet, and his presence will likely negatively impact the other Browns' skill position players as the offense is likely to take a step back from the promise it showed Week 2 under McCown.

No Shoulders Allowed

Pyro's take: Two weeks, two injured shoulders for Cleveland's starting quarterback. Josh McCown suffered an injury to his left shoulder Sunday versus the Baltimore Ravens.

Fantasy goo: It's tough to say what this means for the Browns and their offense, but it's probably not good. McCown's injury is compounded by the loss of starting center Cam Erving. If the Browns played a game tomorrow their starting quarterback would be rookie third-rounder Cody Kessler. You have to imagine the Browns will look to protect the rookie with the run game, but defenses should expect that too.

Will top pick Corey Coleman be the Browns No. 1 receiver this season? — Maddie Hannah, Rocky River, Ohio — All signs are pointing that way.

Pyro's take: Will top pick Corey Coleman be the Browns No. 1 receiver this season? — Maddie Hannah, Rocky River, Ohio — All signs are pointing that way. Coleman still has a lot to learn about running a pro-style offense, but he's fiercely competitive and working his tail off.

Fantasy Goo: Corey can run like a deer with his 4.38 forty and Coleman is an excellent jumper that can high-point the ball consistently which will benefit either RG3 or Josh McCown who are both below average quarterbacks. Gary Barnidge will compete for targets with the rookie. Corey may be in his first year but, may be used extensively due to the lack of pass catchers in Cleveland which consists of players such as Andrew Hawkins, Taylor Gabriel and even the one time quarterback, Terrelle Pryor. Corey is currently going as the 46th wide receiver in mock drafts and in the 10th round of 12 team leagues. Coleman looks like a real bargain based on target potential. Just keep in mind that RG3 might throw more bounce passes than right on target passes. There could also be a game of musical chairs at the QB position with RG3 and McCown.

Is Josh McCown the best option at Quarterback for Cleveland

Josh McCown is currently

Pyro's take: Josh McCown is currently performing as the Browns' best QB at this point in the preseason, according to ESPN. McCown has done a great job picking up the new offense.

The job is still expected to be Robert Griffin III's to lose, and the selection of Cody Kessler in the 2016 NFL Draft makes things even murkier for McCown at this point. Still, the veteran has proven to be a reliable starter in the past when healthy, and Griffin and Kessler are certainly not locks in their own right.

Browns QB Josh McCown said he will help mentor a young quarterback if that is what he is asked to do.

Pyro's take: “My expectation is to come into work and be available and be ready to do whatever’s asked of me. If that’s to bring along a draft pick and to start until that guy’s ready, then I’m willing to do that. If that’s to go the full 16, I’m excited about doing that. If that’s to help that guy as he takes over, whatever my role, whatever’s asked of me, I’m just here to win football games,” McCown said. “Whatever my role is, I’m all in. I just want to help.”

McCown is under contract for the next two seasons at $5 million a year.

Josh McCown back in the saddle again

Pyro's take: Josh McCown is back in play for fantasy football types. McCown returns to the starting lineup following the demotion of Johnny Manziel. The veteran has played well in every game he's started, including a Browns-record 457 yards and 33 points in the win over Baltimore earlier this season. He has 11 touchdowns in 2015 and four interceptions. He has run the offense efficiently and wisely. Baltimore is a struggling team, and even though its defense is playing better than it was Oct. 11, McCown is healthy. He has far exceeded expectations this season and is worthy of strong consideration Monday night. -- Pat McManamon

Josh McCown (ribs) said he's "more optimistic" about playing this week than he was last week.

Pyro's take: “I would say I’m more optimistic [about my chances to play Sunday than I was about last Thursday] just because it’s a normal week, so I think that gives us a better chance to evaluate it,” McCown said. “But again, kind of when dealing with what I’m dealing with, you need a lot of time [to heal]. Just every day, we’ll see how I feel when I wake up and as we go throughout the day. Each day, I felt like we gained a little ground, maybe not as much as I would like, but I feel like it’s improving and that’s a good thing.”

“We’ll kind of gather all the information tonight after practice, see where Josh is, probably re-visit it in the morning and then go from there,” Pettine said.

McCown to play Today Week 8

Pyro's take: MAnziel warmed up his hands to no avail. MCown will get the nod in Week 8.

Josh McCown (shoulder) to start Sunday's game

Pyro's take: McCown is probably having his best season ever, but has a tough match up against the Cardinals. Not only that but he is dealing with a shoulder issue because somehow he couldnt stop his momentum and he went crashing into the wall by the stands.

I would recommend him to be benched.

Josh McCown (shoulder) will not practice on Wednesday.

Pyro's take: Tony Grossi stated on twitter "HC MIke Pettine: Josh McCown, day to day, will be held out Wed."

Johnny Manziel will be the next man up if McCown cant go.

Josh McCown's hand is swollen but working fine

Pyro's take: According to Mary Kay Cabot via twitter "mccown's right hand a little swollen today and ring finger wrapped but X-rays negative and says won't miss practice: "I feel fine"

The Browns are a mess and there is probably no difference between a swollen hand and a non-injured hand of Josh McCown, they both still are non-productive.

Back to the bench

Pyro's take: Josh McCown is back and that means Johnny Manziel will be carrying a clipboard. He has changed his game around, but still needs fine tuning. For one, fumbling four times is not a welcomed sight.

Manziel went 21-of-39 passing (54 percent) for 354 yards (9.1 YPA) and a 3:1 TD-to-INT ratio, adding 36 rushing yards.

McCown looks ready for Week 2

Pyro's take: If you were hoping to get in some Johnny Manziel time, it appears that it wont happen, at least not this week.

Josh McCown outlook is still unclear for Sunday's game. Greg Auman, via his twitter account, stated "Bucs QB Josh McCown says thumb has improved but won't say if he's ready to be active as backup QB for Sunday's game vs. Vikings."

Pyro's take: Josh McCown status maybe uncertain, but here at Pyro, we do know, that he should not be on your roster.

Resumed Practice

Rick Stroud, reporter for the Tampa Times, has reported via his twitter account "QB Josh McCown is back at practice and throwing the football during the portion open to media"

Pyro's take: This changes nothing for Mike Glennon, as Napoleon Dynamite will be the starter, because McCown sucks.

Not Ready

Greg Auman, beat writer for the Tampa Bay Buccs, has stated that "Josh McCown's injured thumb: Said he still hasn't done any football activities with throwing hand. Won't say when he could return."

Pyro's take: Most likely when McCown does return it will be as Mike Glennon's back-up. If you haven't already, its safe to drop him.

McCown is a Buc and the starter

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and new head coach Lovie Smith made some free agent waves on Wednesday when they were able to grab free agent QB Josh McCown off the market, signing him to a two-year deal. Instantly, with the lack of success at the position recently, many wondered whether or not McCown would eventually be anointed the starting quarterback at his new home.

Well, we don’t have to wonder for long as Smith has already confirmed that, yes, McCown is indeed the number one guy for the Bucs.

Bucs' Lovie Smith, asked if Josh McCown is his quarterback: "Yes, he is."

Some at least thought that there would be at least a small amount of competition between McCown and Mike Glennon, but Smith wasted no time in making the proclamation just hours after they signed their new man under center.

Pyro's take: Lovie wanted his man, and he got him. McCown had been with the Bears, and was initially brought in when Lovie Smith was the coach. Now that Lovie is the new head man in Tampa, he is putting his stamp on the team, and that begins with starting the veteran Josh McCown at quarterback.

Mike Glennon may still be the future of the Buccaneers, but he is going to start the 2014 season with a clipboard in his hand. McCown proved he can be an effective quarterback playing in eight games last season and throwing 13 touchdowns to only one interception. Even though he is named the starter, he is still a low end fantasy option. Lovie Smith has proven one thing, he does defense, and Marc Trestman is not going to be calling the offense for the Bucs.
