Justin Gage

Tennessee Titans

Zzzzzzzzzzzz...

Justin Gage is a sleeper... A mind sleeper.  Six cups of coffee and things don't appear to be looking up for us or Gage.  Let's see...  He is one of the worst #1 WRs in the league, he led the 13-3 Titans in receiving yards last year with 651 yards, his career high in yardage is 750 yards, his 40-yard dash time is slow at 4.65, and at 6'4", he should be a solid red-zone target... but he's not.  He's caught 12 TDs in six seasons as a pro.  The Titan coaches are looking for him to step it up this year... but he won't.

2009 Fantasy Outlook

Gage will be starting opposite newly acquired Nate Washington and instantly becomes the second leading WR on the team.  The team also drafted Kenny Britt in the first round and he figures to knock Gage out of the starting lineup eventually.  Tennessee will also continue to pound the ball.  Gage is the perfect example of a guy with zero upside that should not be drafted unless and until you are nursing your 12th Beam and Coke.  Make him the 83rd WR off the board this summer.

Contract

In February of 2008, Gage signed a four-year, $14 million contract with the Titans that included $6.5 million guaranteed.  Here are the last few years on that deal:

2009 - $2 million

2010 - $1.5 million

2011 - $3.5 million

2012 - Free Agent

Injury Report

Green

Gage has had various little injuries over the course of his career, but nothing too major that would keep him from getting the green light here.

Breaking News

Gage expected to return on Sunday expand +

Titans wide receiver Justin Gage (back) practiced in full on Wednesday and looks ready to return to the lineup this weekend against the Rams.

Pyro's Take:

If he doesn't suffer a setback in practice this week, Gage will be back and surely eat into the fantasy football value of rookie Kenny Britt. His return would help the Titans as a team, but he's still worth no more than a low-end flex on yours.

Gage inactive for Titans expand +

Titans wide receiver Justin Gage (back) is inactive for the game against the Colts today. Rookie WR Kenny Britt will get the start again in his place.

Pyro's Take:

Britt has been playing really well of late, so go ahead and use him as a WR3 or flex on your fantasy football team today.

Gage to get starting job back upon return expand +

According to Titans coach Jeff Fisher, wide receiver Justin Gage (back) will get his starting job back from rookie WR Kenny Britt when he returns from his injury.
"When Justin comes back and is 100 percent he is going to start, and Kenny is going to play," Fisher said. "That's just the way things are. Kenny was playing before Justin got hurt."

Pyro's Take:

Gage is a wily veteran, sure, but his upside and breakaway ability is nowhere close to that of the rookie. We expect to see Britt more than we saw him in the beginning of the year, but his fantasy football value does take a hit with this news.

Gage practices with scout team on Wednesday expand +

Titans wide receiver Justin Gage (back) was back practicing with the team on Wednesday, though it was only with the scout team.

Pyro's Take:

There's no word as to whether or not he'll play this Sunday yet, but even if he does, he won't be worth more than a weak flex play on your fantasy football team.

Gage could practice with scout team this week expand +

Titans coach Jeff Fisher is hopeful that wide receiver Justin Gage (back) can work with the scout team at practice this week after missing the past three games due to injury.

Pyro's Take:

All the players want him back too... even the rookie who looks to have taken his job, Kenny Britt, as Gage is known as a big brother to these guys. Even if he does return, he won't be worth more than a flex at best on your fantasy football team.

Gage unsure when he'll return expand +

Titans wide receiver Justin Gage (back), who has been inactive the past two weeks, said that he doesn't know when he'll return, but that he's "made a lot of progress in the last week" and that after working hard lately, "the next step is being able to be back on the practice field."

Pyro's Take:

Rookie WR Kenny Britt seems to be filling in just fine for Gage, leading the Titan receivers in yards the past two games and hauling in his first TD reception Monday night. However, with Vince Young leading a rush-based team, neither Britt nor Gage are worth much in the world of fantasy football just yet.

Gage inactive as expected today expand +

Titans wide receiver Justin Gage (back) is inactive for the game against the Bills on Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

Gage will be out a couple of weeks as the fractures in his back heal. He won't need surgery, however, which is always a good thing.

Gage sits out practice with full-body soreness expand +

Titans wide receiver Justin Gage (back) sat out Wednesday's practice with full-body soreness from falling to the turf after a circus catch last Sunday. Both he and coach Jeff Fisher expect him to be able to play Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

Gage should be able to play on Sunday, but probably shouldn't be in your fantasy football lineup against a tough Buffalo secondary.

Gage sore from acrobatic catch, but should be okay expand +

Titans coach Jeff Fisher reported today that wide receiver Justin Gage is "really sore" from a fall he took after an acrobatic 33-yard catch in the game Sunday. "It's like he fell off a ladder. That was a great catch, but he's sore. We're going to do some tests to make sure he's OK," Fisher said.

Pyro's Take:

Gage should be fine. He's still no more than a flex play on your fantasy football team with the Titans turning to the run even more now that Vinsanity has taken over at QB.

Gage mildly injured on Sunday expand +

Titans wide receiver Justin Gage left late in the game against the 49ers on Sunday with an unknown injury. When asked about it, Gage said: "I slipped and fell in the grocery store. Put that in there."

Pyro's Take:

Funny guy Gager, but isn't that line reserved for Kurt Warner?
Gage has been more productive since Vinsanity took over, going for the most yards and targets on the team the past two weeks, but he's still hardly a flex option on your fantasy football team at this point.

Collins hooks up with Gage for 14-yard TD expand +

Titans quarterback Kerry Collins looks to be in sync with his WR1 Justin Gage to start off the year. Collins and Gage hooked up on a 14-yard touchdown pass to cap off a quick 2-minute drill at the end of the first half Thursday night.

Pyro's Take:

Gage ended the half with three catches for 27 yards, including that 14-yard TD catch, while Collins put up some good numbers himself going 13-of-21 for 174 yards and a TD.
Though both players are having a good first game, neither one is worthy of playing any week. Gage could be a spot starter if two of your receivers are on the bye, but Collins is more of a fifth-string fantasy QB.

Nate Washington injures right hamstring in practice expand +

Titans big off-season addition WR Nate Washington went down with a right hamstring injury in practice Monday. Washington is scheduled to undergo an MRI and is expected to miss the final two preseason games.

Pyro's Take:

Washington has been everything the Titans were hoping for during the first part of training camp, but will now have to play the waiting game while combing through their roster for a temporary replacement. Washington stood to be the WR1 for the Titans this season, as his abilities were shown to outweigh the feeble Justin Gage's. For now, Justin Gage takes over as the WR1 again for the Titans and we'll keep you updated on Nate's progress with the injury as it unfolds.

Gage, Washington both start at WR for Titans in Hall of Fame Game expand +

Tennessee Titans WR Justin Gage started the game at split end, while fellow WR Nate Washington started the game at the flanker position. Nate had himself a couple of catches for 25 yards with Gage only corralling one catch for 19 yards.

Pyro's Take:

Seems to us like the Titans are pretty set with Gage and Washington starting out wide this year, though rookie Kenny Britt could make his way into the mix at some point. Washington should be the more interesting player, both in reality and in fantasy, though neither should really be more than a deep backup on your team this year as the Titans are still a run-first offensive team.
