Kellen Clemens

New York Jets

Moooooo for Jesus!

Normally a pastime reserved for Playboy Centerfolds, Kellen Clemens has gone out on a limb to say to the 280 lb. defensive ends of the world that he actually enjoys horseback riding in his spare time.  We hope your offensive line is "behind you" on that one... Of course, there's always a reason behind even the most nonsensical infatuation, and this odd football player fancy is no exception.  Clemens, in fact, is a 6th generation cattle rancher who grew up on his family's 3,500-acre ranch in Oregon herding cattle with his four sisters.  Besides knowing how to keep his little toesies out of the horseshit, Kellen is also an active member of Catholic Athletes for Christ.

2009 Fantasy Outlook

For the Jets, the upcoming 2009 season behind Center is almost as hazy as how Kellen became a QB in the first place.  When Brett Favre retired, again, Clemens was pretty sure that his time had finally arrived, but the Jets then drafted Mark Sanchez in the 1st round of the '09 draft.

Whether Clemens wins the job is of little importance.  He is pickup fodder in the unlikely event he pulls a Steve Beuerlein/Kurt Warner ala 1999, but nothing more.  His receivers are weak, and the team is dealing with a new coaching staff and scheme.  They do have one of the top offensive lines, so weirder things have happened.

Breaking News

Clemens to get the start on Sunday expand +

Jets coach Rex Ryan announced on Wednesday that quarterback Kellen Clemens will get the start on Sunday against the Buccaneers and that Mark Sanchez (knee) should be ready for action again in Week 15.

Pyro's Take:

We guess Sanchez's knee didn't come around the way the coaches were hoping for, so better to be safe than sorry against a beatable team like the Bucs. WRs Braylon Edwards and Jerricho Cotchery take an obvious fantasy football hit this weekend with Clemens in there, though still could be worth a play against a lame-ass Bucs D.

Clemens stepped over for starting job yet again expand +

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan made it official today and named rookie QB Mark Sanchez the Jets starting QB for Week 1. “I think this is the appropriate time to make the decision,” Ryan said. “I feel very comfortable with my decision to go with Sanchez as a quarterback. I’ve relied on a lot of people, but more than anything, I’ve relied on myself. My instincts as a coach — I’ve been around the game a long time. I feel that the best move for our franchise and for our team is to go with Mark as our quarterback."

Pyro's Take:

This decision came a little quicker than we thought it would, but came with the same result nonetheless. Kellen Clemens is a backup QB, period. Sanchez may be a bit rough around the edges, but there's no real downside to the Jets throwing him into the fire and seeing how he reacts to live pressure situations. Whatever speed he matures at, there's no doubt that the Jets have more of a chance at winning games with Sanchez running the show than they do with Clemens.

All said, Sanchez shouldn't be depended on as a fantasy QB this year, even as a third stringer.

Neither Sanchez nor Clemens delivers standout performance expand +

Neither New York Jets first-round pick QB Mark Sanchez nor QB Kellen Clemens did much in Monday night's preseason game against the Ravens to secure the starting job in Week 1. Sanchez went just 3-of-8 passing for 43 yards while Clemens went 5-of-10 for 60 yards. Both QBs threw for a TD and INT each during the game.

Pyro's Take:

There was a lot of pressure on the young Mark Sanchez Monday night, and not just because the Jets traded up to make him their franchise QB. There was also the added pressure of the game being aired on national TV, against one of the most feared defenses in the league, while the whole time also fighting for the starting gig. It's a tight race going into the final couple of weeks before the real games start, but we believe Sanchez will eventually come out on top here.

Jets starting QB could be named next week expand +

The New York Jets face off against the Baltimore Ravens in their second preseason game Monday night in Baltimore. If rookie QB Mark Sanchez or Kellen Clemens delivers a standout performance against the vaunted Ravens Defense, that player could be named the regular season starter later in the week according to coach Rex Ryan. Said Ryan, "Obviously, you're taking the body of work. It won't be just through one game. But if somebody steps up and shines against what is one of the best defenses in the National Football League, then you have to weight it more than you would going against somebody else."

Pyro's Take:

Sanchez will be starting the game and working against the Ravens first-string defense, so if the rookie QB does anything of note, he will most likely be named the starter. Sanchez has been the favorite to win the job from the beginning of camp, but hasn't done enough yet to pull away from Clemens. We'll see if the Jets first-round pick has the moxie in him to take that starting position when it counts.

Reality check for Mark Sanchez, Jets expand +

Despite the promising debut last Friday night by New York Jets rookie QB Mark Sanchez, the team needs to remember that their 22-year old first-round draft pick is still just learning the ropes. Sanchez has managed to go just 8 for 26 passing in practice since his 3 of 4, 88 yard performance in the preseason game, while Kellen Clemens has fared much better going 23 for 38 in the same span.

Pyro's Take:

Sanchez is still a bit ripe, so the Jets need to give him a little room to grow. As for who is going to win the starting job for this team, we really couldn't say just yet. Sanchez might be the future, but Clemens has the poise right now to run the ship. This battle might go down to the wire, so the next couple of preseason games should be kept a close eye on. We'll continue to update the progress of this situation as it develops.

Clemens named starter for pre-season opener expand +

Jets' head coach, Rex Ryan, named Kellen Clemens the starter for the first pre-season game vs. the Rams on Friday, August 14th.

Pyro's Take:

hahahahahahaha

Rex Ryan sets deadline to name starting QB expand +

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said that he expects to name a staring QB before the Jets third preseason game on August 29.

Pyro's Take:

Ryan is just procrastinating because neither QB has looked good this preseason. Sanchez will win the competition and unseat Clemens, but it's a lose-lose situation for the Jets.

Kellen Clemens is par for the course expand +

His course, that is. Clemens has been terrible in training camp, not even managing to get one first down all afternoon yesterday. Mark Sanchez has the early lead in this barn-burner.

Pyro's Take:

Clemens will be out of the league within two seasons. He does not have talent. Mark Sanchez will be starting and the Jets will struggle to move the ball thru the air. They could also slice and dice the carries for Jones/Greene/Washington ala Baltimore. We're steering clear of this mess.
