Kerry Collins

Tennessee Titans

B-List

Kerry Collins is the Dennis Hopper of the NFL (but way less cool!).

They both have had up and down careers, and both have had problems with the bottle.

Kerry Collins is a tenacious SOB but most definitely resembles the B-list side of the Hop's career. You will not find another 14-year veteran with a 55.7% completion rate, career QB-rating of 74, and over 35,000 passing yards.  Typically QBs with that poor of a completion % and QB-rating don't last in this league.  Collins has somehow pulled it off, though.  His game is bland, and he doesn't do any one thing very well.  He has one of the slowest releases in the game, has been consistently mistake-prone (almost as many career INTs as TDs), and is flat-footed.  He's big with a strong arm but doesn't have the zip on the ball that most strong-armed QBs have.

Welcome to the NFL

Early on in his career, Kerry battled alcoholism and was more immature than most kids coming into the league.  He plays football and obviously is friendly with people of all colors - maybe too friendly.  In a widely publicized incident at the time, he was accused of being a racist for calling Muhsin Muhammed the N-word.  Yes, the word is as terrible as one can find in the English vernacular.  Sure, it is not uncommon for black people to use this word on occasion, but we don't know of a white boy previously assuming this privilege and living to tell about it.  Unfortunately, Collins did, and stories swirled that Norberto Garrido KO'd him for it; the only problem? Norberto is not black.  We believe that Collins was just being a drunk idiot and not knowing where to draw the line.  This does not excuse his behavior, but he certainly has cleaned up his act since then.

2008

He was Vince Young's seat warmer since being signed in 2006, but Vince went AWOL after week one in 2008 after spraining an MCL and being booed by his hometown fans for poor play.  Collins would proceed to step in and throw 12 TDs, 2,676 yards with a 58% completion rate, yet guide the team to 13 wins and a second straight playoff berth.  We challenge you to go find another 13-win, 12 TD (or less) QB with a season 58% completion rate (or less).  This guy is an anomaly through and through.

Apparently Collins and his agent were more locked in on the win/loss column than they were his weak QB statistics.

"I made my case known, that I'd like to be here and feel that I can be a part of several more good seasons," Collins, 36, told reporters in Nashville. "I have several good years left in me, I know that... I will pack up and go somewhere else (if unwanted). I don't want to, but that's the reality of this business."

Added Collins: "I am a starter in this league and if nothing materializes that way I will retire." - Kerry Collins quote from late January, 2009

His mind over matter worked because about one month later the Titans inked him to a two-year, $15 million contract.

2009 Fantasy Outlook

Collins does not have the WRs to be a fantasy starter in 2009.  Newly signed Nate Washington is a slot receiver at best.  Justin Gage, if we are calling him their WR1, is the worst WR1 in the league - which is not up for debate.  And the bottom line is... Tennessee is a run-first team and has the tandem of RBs to get it done on the ground.  If you have room on your roster for three fantasy QBs, go ahead and target this guy within the last two rounds of the draft.

Contract

After leading the Titans to an impressive 13-3 mark last season, the Titans decided to sign Kerry to a two-year, $15 million contract that included $8.5 million guaranteed.  The terms were not disclosed:

2009 - Under Contract

2010 - Under Contract

2011 - Free Agent

Injury Report

Green

Kerry has had no major career threatening injuries in the last few years. He’s been a backup for most of that time as well, so he isn’t too beaten up.

Breaking News

Collins set to sit on the bench, for good expand +

Titans coach Jeff Fisher confirmed after practice today that quarterback Vince Young will take over as the team's starter in Week 8 against the Jaguars.

Pyro's Take:

Nice of you to join us back in the land of No Shit!, Mr. Fisher. Kerry Collins has been dreadful in leading the 13-3 2008 Titans to an 0-6 start this year, so the switch to the younger, more versatile Vinsanity was just a matter of time. Go ahead and grab Young off the waiver wire in your fantasy football league as he has infinitely more value than Collins ever did.

Speculation puts Collins in backup role expand +

According to the Nashville Tennessean, the Titans will make the switch at quarterback and start Vince Young in place of Kerry Collins.

Pyro's Take:

The official announcement won't come until later today after the Titans practice, but we don't see how coach Jeff Fisher can keep playing a 36-year old has-been who has led the team to an 0-6 start over the possible future of the franchise Vince Young.
We'll let you know the official word later today.

Fisher to announce starting QB tomorrow expand +

Titans coach Jeff Fisher won't wait until Sunday to announce his starting QB as was expected. Fisher said today that he will make the decision after practice on Thursday whether it will be Vince Young or Kerry Collins and let the media know.

Pyro's Take:

Though the whole sporting world thinks it should be Vince Young, it will likely still be Collins under center come Sunday. Why, we have no idea.
Vince has the greater fantasy upside if you're willing to take the risk in grabbing him.

Who will be the starting QB for the Titans? expand +

When asked if QB Vince Young was ready to play if needed, Titans coach Jeff Fisher said “I think he, along with a lot of the players that are in backup roles, took advantage of their opportunities last week”. However, when asked if he knew of a change, current starting QB Kerry Collins said "I haven’t gotten any indication from him of a change”.

Pyro's Take:

Reports and speculation have said that owner Bud Adams is pushing for Young to be the starter in Week 8, but nothing has been confirmed. Vinsanity easily has the more fantasy football upside of the two.

Collins looks like he'll continue to start after the bye expand +

Titans quarterback Kerry Collins has passed for just 1,071 yards in six game and thrown more interceptions (eight) than touchdowns (five).
"Kerry's not playing Peyton Manningesque right now, but he's not playing bad," OC Mike Heimerdinger said. "We're just not making plays to help the guy."

Pyro's Take:

Why coach Jeff Fisher hasn't turned to Vince Young yet is beyond our understanding. They will, however, and when they do, VY will finally have some fantasy football value.

Fisher won't discuss quarterback plans expand +

For the first time since the questions started coming in, coach Jeff Fisher did not discuss the Titans quarterback situation after the game. The Titans have a bye in Week 7 to figure out who their start will be.

Pyro's Take:

There wasn't much that Vince Young could do against the Patriots on Sunday, but whatever he would have done, it would have had to have been better than what Kerry Collins did. Look for the change at QB to be made in Week 8, and consider picking Vince Young up on the waiver wire if he's still there.

Collins to remain Titans starting QB expand +

Despite a fifth straight loss to start the season, Titans coach Jeff Fisher reiterated that Kerry Collins is still the starting quarterback and that he will not be turning to Vince Young just yet.

"We have to improve as a team and that is what we are working on," Fisher said. "Kerry is not the reason. Our football team is the reason we're at where we're at, not the quarterback position."

Pyro's Take:

My goodness Jeff, what in the world are you smoking? Collins may not be the sole reason for your 0-5 record, but he hasn't helped, and VY could give the team the boost it needs to feel competitive again.
Young is still the QB on this team that holds the most fantasy football value.

Kerry Collins job safe... for now expand +

When asked about Kerry Collins and the Titans starting quarterback situation, head coach Jeff Fisher said "Kerry's our starter. Kerry gives us our best chance to win. That was my decision today, to stay with him and try and find a way to win."

Pyro's Take:

Sounds a little too wishy-washy for the normally balls-out Fisher. Come on Jeff, you're 0-4 with a 36-year old QB. Grab your cujones and turn to Vince Young already, will ya?

Collins hooks up with Gage for 14-yard TD expand +

Titans quarterback Kerry Collins looks to be in sync with his WR1 Justin Gage to start off the year. Collins and Gage hooked up on a 14-yard touchdown pass to cap off a quick 2-minute drill at the end of the first half Thursday night.

Pyro's Take:

Gage ended the half with three catches for 27 yards, including that 14-yard TD catch, while Collins put up some good numbers himself going 13-of-21 for 174 yards and a TD.
Though both players are having a good first game, neither one is worthy of playing any week. Gage could be a spot starter if two of your receivers are on the bye, but Collins is more of a fifth-string fantasy QB.

Titans' Collins awful in 2nd pre-season game vs Tampa Bay expand +

Kerry Collins threw two INTs and completed under 50% of his passes. Vince Young was spectacular, though, connecting with rookie Kenny Britt on a 37-yard TD pass.

Pyro's Take:

Yes, the TD pass was in the 2nd half and not vs. the starters, but it's nice to see Britt getting on the board. He has more potential than either Justin Gage or Nate Washington.

Vinsanity much more comfortable in second preseason game expand +

Tennessee Titans QB Vince Young looked to be much more comfortable and confident in Saturday's preseason game against the Buccaneers than in the Hall of Fame Game last week. Young ended up completing 9 of 14 passes for 131 yards, including a 37-yard TD strike to rookie Kenny Britt.

Pyro's Take:

Young still isn't ready to supplant Kerry Collins as the starting QB yet, but if the Titans begin to falter with Collins at the helm, don't be surprised if they make the switch to Young sooner than you'd think. Despite all the trouble of Vinsanity's recent past, he still has skills galore and will someday be a starting QB in this league.

Titans' QB Collins to see very little work in the pre-season expand +

QB Kerry Collins will not see much time/reps in the pre-season, opening the door for Vince Young to run with the first and second teams.

Pyro's Take:

Collins doesn't need the pre-season to get in tune and Young will be using this opportunity to sharpen his game in the likely event that Collins reverts back to his old ways of telegraphing passes, throwing INTs, and playing poorly. If you look at Collins' career, it reads very up and down. And if we are going to call last year an up, Young could be on the field sooner than anyone expects.
