Kevin Smith

Detroit Lions

Best Lion RB since Barry

Get on board and just embrace a special running back on a team that is better than their record. How a rookie averaged 4.1 YPC on an 0-16 team is tough to figure out. That he went for 1262 total yards on 8 TDs is even more befuddling. Kevin Smith split carries with Rudi Johnson during the first half of the season, and the Lions were playing from behind pretty much all season. He has a bright fantasy future and is looking like a USDA prime sleeper heading into '09.

Smith has solid speed clocking a 4.46 40 yard dash and has excellent field vision. He ranked 8th among all RBs with eight plays going for over 20 yards on the ground. His 1st half/2nd half season splits reveal a ton about his fantasy potential. He went for 305 yards and three TDs during the first eight games (on only 70 carries). Once they gave him the ball consistently, he blew up for 671 yards and five TDs during over the final eight games (on 168 carries). Rudi Johnson was completely ineffective over the first half of the season averaging only 3.1 YPC to Smith's 4.35 YPC (1st half).

Fantasy Outlook 2009

Kevin Smith's fantasy stock is like Coca-Cola's in 1988 before Buffett got a hold of 'em.  The coaching staff has been completely replaced, and the entire Lions team will be carrying a Gibraltar-sized chip on their shoulder heading into '09. When you look at the QB carousel that Smith produced with, it's not like it can get much worse if rookie Matt Stafford should happen to win the job from Daunte Culpepper. Rudi has been cut and the Lions brought in Maurice Morris inking him to a $7 million deal over three years. Huh? Morris blows and the good news for Smith is that he won't be a threat to bogart as many carries as Rudi did.

Another extremely encouraging factor to consider is the cheese schedule the Lions have in '09.  They get the luxury of facing the entire NFC West division which are fantasy dream matchups across the board.  They also get the Browns and the Bengals. It's fair to assume that given what a joke the Lions have become, no opponent is going to be emotionally geared up to face the them.  Smith is going to roll more than a sushi chef at NOBU. Smith is going to fly under the radar and should return good value in '09.  Make him the 57th RB off of draft boards this summer.

Maurice Morris is not fantasy viable.  Unless you like wiping your ass with money and want to lose your league, don't even bother with MaMo.

Breaking News

Kevin Smith done for the season expand +

According to Lions head coach Jim Schwartz, running back Kevin Smith will undergo season-ending surgery on his left knee. Smith tore at least one ligament in the knee and the extent of the damage won't be known until surgeons perform the procedure.

Pyro's Take:

Maurice Morris and rookie Aaron Brown will pick up the slack for the Lions, though neither is worth a pickup for your fantasy football team as Detroit plays top-flight rush D's Arizona and San Fran in Weeks 15 and 16.

Kevin Smith looks good to go for Sunday expand +

Lions running back Kevin Smith (shoulder) was out on the practice field with his teammates again on Friday and looks ready to give it a go this weekend.

Pyro's Take:

Not a bad match-up for Kevin this weekend, and if Megatron is back as well, Seattle won't be able to stack the box against him. He can be used as a RB2 on your fantasy football team on Sunday if you have him.

Kevin Smith returns to practice Thursday expand +

Lions running back Kevin Smith (shoulder) was back at practice Thursday after missing out on drills yesterday. Both he and fellow RB Maurice Morris took reps with the first-team offense, though Smith is expected to start as usual.

Pyro's Take:

Coach Jim Schwartz said earlier in the week that Smith is still his main man, so don't expect an RBBC to be used in Detroit anytime soon. Smith can be used as a RB2 on your fantasy football team this week.

Kevin Smith sits out practice Wednesday expand +

Lions second-year running back Kevin Smith (shoulder) sat out practice today after injuring his left shoulder against the Rams last Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

His status for this weekend's game against the Seahawks is unknown right now, so check with us during the week to see if he can be used on your fantasy football team in Week 9 or not.

Kevin Smith to have load lightened expand +

After re-aggravating a previous shoulder injury, Lions running back Kevin Smith was replaced by RB Maurice Morris, who filled in nicely for the injured starter going for 63 yards on 14 carries.
"...That's why we signed Maurice in the off-season," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. "He's a running back that's proven in this league. And he's gonna need to carry a load for us."

Pyro's Take:

Smith looked like a world-beater towards the end of last year, spurring the Pyro staff to all be high on him going into the 2009 season. Smith, however, has disappointed going for just one 100-yard game, 393 yards (3.1 YPC), and 3 TDs on the year. We might see a RBBC going forward in Detroit, so Kevin's fantasy football value would certainly take a hit.

Kevin Smith active and will start against Bears expand +

Lions running back Kevin Smith (shoulder) has been declared active and will start today against the Bears.

Pyro's Take:

This is a bit of a shock as all week it's been said that he probably wouldn't play today. That said, it looks to be safe to get him into your starting fantasy football lineup now.

Kevin Smith to be a game-time decision Sunday expand +

Lions running back Kevin Smith (shoulder) practiced in limited fashion again on Friday, and coach Jim Schwartz said that the team will work him out before the game on Sunday to see how he responds before making a decision on his status.

Pyro's Take:

Our gut tells us that they'll be resting their young RB against the Bears this weekend, but check back Sunday morning to see if you can get him into your fantasy football lineup at the last second.

Kevin Smith at practice on Thursday expand +

Lions running back Kevin Smith was at practice on Thursday, but since the team wasn't in full pads, it wasn't clear if he was in full participation mode or not.

Pyro's Take:

If the Lions stand a chance this Sunday, they need Smith back in the lineup, but that's highly unlikely at this point. Sit him on your fantasy football bench until otherwise notified.

Smith doesn't practice for Lions on Wednesday expand +

Lions running back Kevin Smith (knee, shoulder) was at practice today, but was not in pads and watched from the sidelines.

Pyro's Take:

Coach Jim Schwartz has already said that the decision to play Smith or not will depend on his practice time this week. Obviously, his missing practice does not bode well for his chances.

Kevin Smith to be game-time decision against Bears expand +

Lions coach Jim Schwartz said on Wednesday that the decision on Sunday to play running back Kevin Smith or not will be based on what they can get out of him in practice this week.

Pyro's Take:

Not only did Smith hurt his shoulder in the game last week, but he just revealed yesterday that he banged up his knee as well. With him facing a good Chicago D, we'd suggest looking somewhere along your fantasy football bench for your RB2 this week.

Kevin Smith not ruled out for Week 4 game yet expand +

Lions running back Kevin Smith's availability for Sunday's game against the Bears is still up in the air after injuring his shoulder last week in the win over the Redskins.

Pyro's Take:

Smith has been icing the shoulder and getting treatment for the injury, but the report was that the injury is considered "week-to-week", which doesn't bode well for fantasy football owners this Sunday. We'll keep you posted.

RB Smith hurts shoulder in Lions first win expand +

Detroit Lions running back Kevin Smith suffered a shoulder injury in the second half of the game against the Redskins on Sunday. Smith did not return to the field, and more tests are being done today to find out the significance of the injury.

Pyro's Take:

The Lions losing Smith for any amount of time would be huge, as the only other backs they have on the team are little Maurice Morris and rookie Aaron Brown. We'll update you on Smith's condition when the tests come back.

Kevin Smith vows to pick up the pace expand +

Lions running back Kevin Smith called his effort last Sunday "probably the worst performance of my career thus far" and vows that he will be more decisive with his running from now on.

Pyro's Take:

We have faith in Smith being a fantasy stud this year, but it won't be easy with the Lions likely playing from behind most of the season. Smith faces the Vikings on Sunday so you might want to think about a replacement this week.

Smith gets 22 touches despite playing catch-up expand +

Detroit Lions second-year running back Kevin Smith was kept on the field the whole game despite playing from behind throughout the Week 1 loss.

Pyro's Take:

We knew that Kevin Smith was going to be one of the few true every-down backs this year, but we didn't realize his backup wouldn't get in at all. Smith had 15 carries, seven catches (nine targets), and will be an all-out fantasy stud soon enough. He should be started weekly.

Kevin Smith ready for a full load expand +

Detroit Lions second-year running back Kevin Smith is looking forward to making a big impact on the league this year. New offensive coordinator, Scott Linehan, has already stated that he will use Smith more on screen passes this year, an area that Smith is sure to excel at, and is ready to make Kevin Smith a household name.

Pyro's Take:

We've been high on Smith ever since watching him towards the end of last year, and marked him high up our cheat sheet accordingly. It seems Smith just kept getting better and better the more they used him, and now that the Lions have a rookie quarterback running the show, we expect Smith to be leaned on quite a bit throughout the year.
