LaDainian Tomlinson

New York Jets

2009 Review

Holy CRAP was that a poor display from the surefire first-ballot Hall-of-Famer, LaDainian Tomlinson, in 2009.  Not just on the field, but off the field as well.  It was awful enough that teammates, coaches, and fans alike all had to be subjected to the athletic fall of one of their heroes, but at the same time were made to witness a regression in character that went far beyond immaturity and into the domain of simply being an asshole.  It pains us to write this about a player we once grouped in with one of the finest athletes and classiest acts the sporting world has ever seen, Walter Payton, but the truth is sometimes painful.  Aside from his 12 TDs, of which only two came from outside 6 yards, Tomlinson had the worst year of his nine-year career in every other aspect of the game you can imagine.  It would be agonizing to list out all the deficiencies, so we’ll just say that his 3.3 yards/carry on the year pretty much sums it up.

2010 Fantasy Outlook

The Chargers simply could take it anymore; the disrespect, the blame game, the sulking, the smack-talking, and least of all the regression of play from LaDainian Tomlinson.  So, off to New York he goes to try and revive a career that will undoubtedly land him in the Hall of Fame.  The only problem is that he happens to have one of the more promising young RBs in the league ahead of him in Shonn Greene to compete with.  Can Tomlinson rise to the challenge?  Will the LT21 of old come around one last time to put the fear of the Gods into opposing defenses?  The answer is a resounding No, but that’s not to say that he won’t at least have a semi-successful season.  The Jets boast one of the best offensive lines in the game, if not the best, and they run the ball an absolute ton.  Shonn Greene, the anointed starter, is still a little wet behind the ears, so the Jets should look to LT’s experience more than you might think in 2010.  He won’t return to the LT21 of old, but he could be in line for pretty decent year in New York, and if any injuries were to come into play, dare we say he’d become a steal on fantasy draft day.

~ The Jets will certainly be using him in 3rd-down situations, seeing that Greene didn’t catch a single pass last year

~ LT has always had a nose for the endzone, so he might be used there over Greene on occasion as well

~ Even though he has clearly lost a step the past couple of years, a new city and better offensive line could reinvigorate him

~ The Jets DO love what they see in Shonn Greene and will give him every opportunity to succeed; and rightfully so, because he’s an absolute beast

Injury Report

Green

LT has dealt with MCL and groin issues in the past, and though he's only missed 3 games in his career, 2 of them were last year (ankle). He's over the 30-year old threshold now, but all things considered, he looks good in camp and should be fine heading into the season

Breaking News

Chargers release LaDainian Tomlinson expand +

The San Diego Chargers decided to release veteran running back LaDainian Tomlinson on Monday. The move had been anticipated since the end of the season as LT21 would have been paid a $2 million roster bonus in March and was set to make $3 million with the team in 2010.

Pyro's Take:

As logical of a decision as it was to make, it's still tough to see a surefire Hall-of-Famer let go from the only team he ever played for. LT will have no problem latching on with another team, but with his game in a steep decline over the past couple of years, the suitors aren't likely to be within the parameters he has set. LaDainian has mentioned that he won't go to a team unless it has a proven QB and legitimate chance to win the Super Bowl. At best, that leaves him with Dallas, New Orleans, Minnesota, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Indy, and Houston (all unlikely), along with Green Bay, Philly, and New England (all possibilities).

LT expected to play after shot to the ribs expand +

Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson took a shot to the ribs on Sunday against the Broncos, but is still expected to practice this week and start against the Chiefs in Week 12.

Pyro's Take:

His 30-year old body has become so fragile, we're surprised the shot didn't kill him! Whatever, he'll be fine for the next game and should be a nice RB2 for your fantasy football team going up against a 27th ranked Chiefs rush D.

Tomlinson's hip injury still lingering expand +

Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson still comes out of games for stretches of time due to the hip injury he suffered a couple of weeks ago.
"It's still bruised," said Tomlinson. "Whenever I get hit or land it, I monitor it. But I don't think about it... I also want to stay fresh throughout the game like I used to do with Michael Turner, and (Darren Sproles) is doing a heck of a job. That's why I come out, so I can be fresh in the fourth quarter if we need to put the game away."

Pyro's Take:

LT has been playing better of late, but is still just a RB2 at best on your fantasy football team. With match-ups against Kansas City and Cleveland over the next two weeks, he could provide you with some pretty nice results out of the position. Start him while he's hot.

LT sidelined on Wednesday with hip injury expand +

Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson was absent from practice on Wednesday dealing with a nagging hip injury, though he says it's nothing serious and that he'll be playing come Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

30-years old really sneaks up on you fast in the NFL. The decline is rapid, whether it be in health or in your level of play, and it doesn't matter if you are a future Hall of Famer or not. LT21 has a poor match-up against the Eagles on Sunday anyway, so he shouldn't be more than a flex play on your fantasy football team.

Tomlinson returns to a full practice Friday expand +

Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson returned to practice in full on Friday after sitting out yesterday with an illness. He's being listed as probable on the team's Week 7 injury report.

Pyro's Take:

LT21 will play, and should be in your fantasy football lineup this week against a soft Chiefs rush D. He's not the same record-breaking LT, but he seems to be getting better as the year goes on.

LT21 misses practice with illness expand +

Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson missed practice on Thursday due to an illness that has hit three other players on the team as well.

Pyro's Take:

There's been a bit of a flu bug going around the NFL lately, but this shouldn't keep him out of action on Sunday. LT has a favorable match-up against the Chiefs this weekend, so get him in your fantasy football lineup if he's good to go.

Tomlinson still Chargers goal-line back expand +

Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson didn't get a key 3rd-down goal-line run in the first quarter of Monday night's game, but coach Norv Turner said it was simply because “the play we originally were going to call, Darren runs”.

Pyro's Take:

LT21 looked the best he had all season, but it was still a far cry from the LT of old. He can still be used as a RB2 on your fantasy football team, but don't expect those 2-3 TD-games of the past.

LT a little rusty, but feels pretty good expand +

Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson (ankle) was back on the field Sunday, but only had seven carries in the game. “I felt pretty good,” said Tomlinson. “I'm still working my way back. I wouldn't say I was there. A little rusty.”

Pyro's Take:

LT gained a whopping 15 yards on those seven carries, and looked more than just "a little rusty" to us. He was dropping passes and getting thrown around on blocking assignments. He's no better than a RB2 on your fantasy football team right now, if that.

LaDainian Tomlinson active for Sunday night football expand +

Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson is active for the game tonight against the Steelers.

Pyro's Take:

LT's back, but don't get over-excited as we believe he'll likely be splitting carries with Darren Sproles, at least for a week. Hopefully you handcuffed these two guys on your fantasy football team.

Tomlinson looks good to go on Sunday night expand +

Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson (ankle, probable) missed the last two games due to injury, but has practiced in full all week and is ready to go against the Steelers on Sunday night.

Pyro's Take:

It's tough to see one of your studs return from injury, yet not be able to play him. The match-up against a tough Steelers D and possibly being a bit rusty has us thinking you should let LT rest on your fantasy football bench until after his Week 5 bye.

LT walking without a limp expand +

Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson (ankle) was walking around without a limp on Monday, but that doesn't mean he's returning to the field this weekend. With a bye in Week 5, coach Norv Turner may opt to rest his star RB for one more week to get completely healthy.

Pyro's Take:

The Chargers could use his services against an angry Steelers team this Sunday night, but not at the risk of injuring him further. Check back later in the week to see how his improvement affects your fantasy football team.

Tomlinson officially ruled out expand +

Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson (ankle) has officially been ruled out for the game against the Dolphins this weekend.

Pyro's Take:

The Chargers will likely keep their star running back out next week as well as they try to get LT back to complete health. Darren Sproles should again be a decent fantasy play on Sunday.

LT misses practice again, figures to miss Week 3 expand +

Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson (ankle) missed practice again on Thursday and is doubtful for this week's match-up against the Dolphins.

Pyro's Take:

The injury has taken much longer to return from than originally expected, and it looks like LT may even miss Week 4 as well so he can get healthy during the bye week in Week 5. If you have his handcuff (Sproles) on your team, consider him a decent fantasy play this weekend.

Tomlinson sits out practice again expand +

Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson sat out practice again on Wednesday due to the ankle injury he suffered in Week 1.

Pyro's Take:

The Chargers aren't planning on LT21 being ready for the game this week against the Dolphins, so Darren Sproles is likely to carry the load once again. Sit him if you got him.

No new news on Tomlinson's ankle expand +

Chargers coach Norv Turner is holding out hope that running back LaDainian Tomlinson will be able to play in Week 3, but is preparing the team as if he won't be. He also did not have any news on the progress of LT's ankle injury.

Pyro's Take:

It would be nice to have Tomlinson available against the Dolphins next Sunday as the running game never really got going with Sproles last week. We'll update you on the situation as it progresses throughout the week.
