Washington is one of the most electric players in the NFL. Washington gets to top speed among the fastest in the league, making him a weapon in the running, passing and return game. His versatility and athleticism have turned him into a fan favorite in New York, and his name is finally starting to come up in fantasy conversation.
The problem is that the Jets' coaching staff hasn't hopped on his bandwagon yet. Despite averaging 4.9 yards a carry over his 3-year career and scoring 19 total touchdowns, Washington has yet to have the ball handed to him more than 151 times in a season; his rookie year as part of the worst the weakest three-headed monster on record (Kevan Barlow and Cedric Houston?).
His 5'8 frame makes him difficult to see over an opposing offensive line, and his downfield vision is exceptional, allowing him to find big holes and use his quickness to burst through the line. He runs low and quick, making hard, quick cuts and accelerates to a high gear in no time. He is deadly as a return-man, and is also a great pass-catcher, especially on screens when the front seven of the defense has been drawn to the QB, leaving only the secondary between Washington and the end zone. In open space, Washington is one of the best in the game.
Because of his big-play ability, his yardage-per-carry numbers are a little bit bloated. His small size limits his ability to take a beating going up the middle, and his ball security leaves something to be desired. He's a flashy back and his tendency to keep his arms loose from his body has caused him to cough up the ball a few times. Thomas Jones, the man standing in his way, is a tough and strong every down back who can do it all. He will keep Leon in a change-of-pace role in '09
The Jets also went out and drafted Iowa stud RB Shonn Greene to compete with Washington for the backup spot and perhaps as a sign of planning for life after Thomas Jones. Greene was one of the elite backs in the country last year, rushing for over 1,800 yards and scoring 20 TDs. He is much bigger than Washington at 5'11'' and 235lbs, so Leon's grip on the backup spot might be in trouble. Washington will have to prove that his speed and agility are more valuable out of the backup spot than Shonn Greene's power and size. Greene figures to be more of a short yardage back in '09 and is more of a threat to Thomas Jones (stealing his goal-line touches) than Leon at this point.
The strength of the Jets ground game is rooted in their offensive line and thumper FB Tony Richardson, who is returning for one more year. We can expect them to focus their entire scheme on the ground as they more than likely will have rookie signal caller, Mark Sanchez, under center to start the season. The Ravens and Falcons had a lot of success grounding and pounding the ball in '08 (both went to the playoffs) and with a new coaching staff and scheme, it's a good bet. Washington finished 29th (regular scoring format) among fantasy RBs in '08, as he was catching (355) almost as many yards as he was rushing (448), and he ripped off a bunch of long TDs (eight total). That is probably a best case scenario for him in '09, short of multiple injuries to rookie Greene and Thomas Jones. He is pining for a new deal, and negotiations are underway but there is nothing concrete as of this print. We anticipate that he will have a new deal before the start of the pre-season. Make him the 59th RB off of draft boards this summer.
Washington is in the final year of his four-year, $2.04 million rookie contract. He's been looking to get an extension for awhile now, but to no avail. As of now, the Blur will be a free agent come next year:
2009 - $530,000
2010 - Free Agent

Washington doesn’t have a significant history of injury, so fantasy owners should be in the clear.
Jets running back Leon Washington was placed on injured reserve today with a fractured tibia and fibula, thus ending his 2009 NFL season.
Pyro's Take:
This was a compound fracture, which means the bone came out of the skin. It was pretty severe, and you have to wonder about his chances of coming back successfully in 2010.
He can now be dropped from your fantasy football team.
Jets coach Rex Ryan believes that one of the keys to the team's success is getting running back Leon Washington as many as 20 touches a game, yet OC Brian Schottenheimer got him just eight touches in the loss to the Saints on Sunday.
Pyro's Take:
With a rookie QB running the team, we would tend to agree with Ryan on this one. Washington has seen his touches per game slip each week from 19 to 16 to 13 to 8 this season. After last week's loss, expect Ryan to get his way with this one going forward.
He carried the ball 8 times for 48 yard and caught two passes for 35 yards and a touchdown in the Jets' second preseason game.
Pyro's Take:
Thomas Jones started, but Washington played extensively with the starters and was way more effective. We like Leon's contributions to increase significantly, and he could be a nice plug and play guy for you when your starters are on bye - but the matchup would have to be favorable. Should TJ go down, Leon's value would sky-rocket.
Leon and his agent were looking for something in the $6 million per year arena, while the Jets originally offered around $2 million per. They are now up to $5 million with around $10 million in guarantees.
Pyro's Take:
Take the money, Jamal!
Jets running back Leon Washington was a no-show the first day of training camp on Thursday as he's working on a getting a new contract. Reports are saying he could get one by the weekend, but for now he's not around.
Pyro's Take:
Every day that Washington doesn't show up is a plus for Thomas Jones. Washington isn't going to have a profound fantasy impact this season anyways, but the more reps Jones gets with Sanchez, the better.
