Limas or Lame-Ass, Tough to Get a Bead on Sweed

At 6'4", 220 lbs, Limas has been likened to Plaxico Burress by scouts and coaches alike.  The question is, will he ever break out and develop the same game Plaxico did with Roethlisberger back in the day?  Sweed has some good hops, making him an easy red-zone target, which can go a long way in the NFL.  Throw in a sticky pair of mitts (2008 AFC Championship game withstanding when he dropped a TD) and the downfield blocking ability (and willingness) of the gods and you've got yourself a WR with a career to look forward to.  His speed is certainly lacking though, and though he seems to have made some great strides this off-season, the Pittsburgh coaches don't quite have the confidence in him yet as they have publicly stated that Sweed definitely does not have any edge over any other WR on the team for the #3 slot behind Holmes and Ward; but that's to be expected.  Will this be motivation enough to bring out all the talent he possesses?  Mike Tomlin sure hopes so, but we're still skeptical.

2009 Fantasy Outlook

He's a big boy with a long way to go.  He struggled stepping in for Ward last year in the playoffs, though granted it was the post-season and he was a rookie.  Rookie Mike Wallace is putting the pressure on him to fill that #3 WR slot vacated by Nate Washington.  If either Ward or Holmes gets injured, Limas has value.  Short of that, he's not draft-worthy.  Leave him on the waiver wire, but be ready to move fast if Holmes or Ward go down.

Injury Report

There have not been any injuries to Sweed thus far.

Breaking News

Sweed put on Reserve/Non-Football Illness list expand +

Steelers wide receiver Limas Sweed was placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Illness list on Monday, thus ending his 2009 NFL season.

Pyro's Take:

Sweed was a disappointment again this year as rookie WR Mike Wallace passed him up early in the year for Pittsburgh's WR3 duties. Sweed ended the season with just one catch for five yards, with that one catch also equaling the number of tackles he had on the year.

Sweed to see some action if Ward can't go expand +

If Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward (hamstring) can't play Thursday night against the Browns, rookie WR Mike Wallace is expected to take his place in the starting lineup. However, Limas Sweed will also be called upon to run some of the routes Ward usually does because of his size.

Pyro's Take:

Wallace has shown flashes of becoming a great receiver in this league and should be able to handle the job against a weak Cleveland D this Thursday. If he starts, he might be worth a chance as a low-end WR3 or flex for your fantasy football team this week. Sweed is still unplayable.

Limas Sweed inactive expand +

Steelers wide receiver Limas Sweed has been declared inactive for the game against the Browns today.

Pyro's Take:

Looks like coach Mike Tomlin liked Shaun McDonald as his WR4 this week over Limas. Who cares though, as neither are worthy of your fantasy football consideration at this point.

Sweed to be inactive again in Week 6? expand +

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said he hasn't decided which wide receiver will be active this weekend, Limas Sweed or Shaun McDonald. "It's really going to be week-to-week as we proceed with those two from here on out," Tomlin said.

Pyro's Take:

Rookie receiver Mike Wallace has clearly taken over as the team's WR3, so it will come down to special teams for this weekly decision. You can safely drop Sweed from your fantasy football team now.

Sweed moving down the WR line expand +

Steelers wide receiver Limas Sweed had such a bad game on Sunday that coach Mike Tomlin has thought of not dressing him for next week's game against the Chargers.

Pyro's Take:

Sweed dropped a surefire touchdown in the 23-20 loss to the Bengals, and when asked if he'd consider activating WR Shaun McDonald in place of Sweed, coach Tomlin said "absolutely".
Sweed seems to be losing fantasy football value every week, so feel free to replace him on your bench.

Sweed starting to run expand +

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Limas Sweed (foot injury) did some running today and will practice on Wednesday, though probably in a limited fashion according to coach Mike Tomlin.

Pyro's Take:

Was the absence of Limas last week the reason the Super Bowl champion Steelers lost to the Bears last week? If he comes back this week and the Steelers win out the rest of the year, we're going with Yes. Rookie Mike Wallace didn't do much as the replacement WR3 on Sunday.

Sweed doesn't practice Friday, unlikely to play Sunday expand +

Steelers wide receiver Limas Sweed missed practice once again on Friday with the mid-foot sprain he suffered at Wednesday's practice. He is unlikely to be active for Sunday's game.

Pyro's Take:

Sweed was unplayable to begin with, but there were hopes of him stepping it up at some point this year and possibly becoming fantasy viable. Those hopes just took a nice little beat-down.

Limas Sweed misses practice with a foot injury expand +

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Limas Sweed missed practice on Thursday with a foot injury. Sweed suffered the injury while practicing on Wednesday.

Pyro's Take:

Sweed was already starting to fall behind rookie Mike Wallace for the WR3 job, so the injury couldn't come at a worse time for the 6'5" wideout. Don't give up on him yet, but stash him deep at the end of your fantasy bench for now.

Sweed still battling for Steelers WR3 position expand +

Coming into the season, the Steelers were expecting wide receiver Limas Sweed to develop into a dependable WR3 for them the way Nate Washington was, but that hasn't quite happened yet as Sweed continues to battle Mike Wallace for the position.

Pyro's Take:

Coach Mike Tomlin has said, "We will continue to (play) both guys until we get clarity as to who has positioned themselves as a potential third wideout, if you will. Right now, we like the work of both of those men, and we'll continue what we're doing in regards to that."
Basically, keep Sweed buried on your fantasy bench and Wallace in the back of your mind.

Limas looking comfortable as the WR3 expand +

Second year Pittsburgh Steelers WR Limas Sweed might finally be coming around. Limas looked extremely comfortable working with the first team as the WR3 during Thursday's preseason game against the Cardinals. He made 2 catches for 56 yards, one being a key 11-yard pass on third down for a first down, while the other was an equally impressive 45-yard bomb.

Pyro's Take:

This is great news for the team, the Steeler fans, and both Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes. After losing Nate Washington in the off-season, they have been searching for someone to step up into that WR3 slot to take the pressure off of Ward and Holmes. They were hoping Sweed would be that guy, and it looks like it will be.
