It’s pretty hard to piss off Pete Carroll. He knows fun like The Fonz knows cool. This is a guy who, as an April Fools prank, called in the LAPD to arrest a player during a team meeting for physically abusing a freshman:
Another time he called in his good buddy Will Ferrell, otherwise known as Captain Compete, to “save” an assistant coach:
In other words, the dude is more laid back than Buddha.
But somehow, Dirty managed to do it. He pissed off Carroll. During Sanchez’s press conference announcing his decision to enter the NFL Draft, Carroll made it clear the two didn’t agree on the decision, and after he was done talking (and before Sanchez took the mic), he walked out of the room with only a pat on the shoulder as he passed his former quarterback.
Carroll had good reason to be upset at Sanchez. He only started one year at USC, and the three quarterbacks before him (two of which won the Heisman Trophy) stayed on board for their senior years. 16 college starts is not a lot to go on (Jets weren’t phased). However, former USC quarterback Matt Cassell didn’t start ONE game, yet he is now the starting QB for the Chiefs (not something you really want to brag about yet, though).
Even though he only started 16 games, and one full season, the Jets felt confident enough in his abilities to select him with the 5th overall pick. In fact, they traded UP for him. Sanchez has great arm strength, tremendous vision, reads defenses well and has above average mobility to escape the blitzes. On one memorable play in the 2009 Rose Bowl, Sanchez released the ball a few seconds before his receiver made a break to the ball, giving the defense little time to react. Sanchez constantly does this, and playing in a pro style offense that USC runs will benefit him greatly in New York.
Sanchez went out with a bang in his final collegiate game against Penn State in the 2009 Rose Bowl. He was 28-for-35 with 413 yards, 4 touchdowns and zero interceptions against one of the best defenses in the country. Overall, Sanchez’s 34 touchdown passes in the 2008 season rank 2nd to Matt Leinart’s 38 for TD passes in a season during the Pete Carroll era.
Surprisingly, there’s a chance Sanchez might not even be the starting quarterback for the Jets when the season opens, as he is competing with Kellen Clemens for the job since Brett Favre retired. If he does start, he won’t have much to work with. The Jets did not make an attempt to sign their top receiver, Lavernaues Coles, and lost him through free agency to the Bengals. Jerricho Cotchery, caught five TDs last year and has never had more than six in a season. Beyond Cotchery, there are guys named Clowney and Stuckey on the depth charts. Dirty will struggle.
The Jets have a fantastic offensive line and ground game. They finished 9th in rushing yards but only 19th in attempts. Sure, some of that success is obviously due to having Favre under center, but the Jets do have a couple pro-bowl offensive lineman. And All-Pro FB Tony Richardson is back for one more year. The Jets will look to Baltimore and Atlanta’s success preserving their rookie signal callers with a heavy dose of Thomas Jones, Leon Washington, and rookie Shonn Greene.
Neither of the Jets’ signal callers are worth drafting this season.
Dirty signed a five-year, $44.5 million contract in June of '09 that included a sweet $28 million of guaranteed money. Besides that, there are a few other millions that can be earned through incentives. $6 million is available via "likely to be shelled out" motivators, while another $9.5 million is there to be had via "unlikely to be earned" escalators. Here's how the rest of it shakes down:
2009 - $2.545 million
2010 - $3,181,250 (+ $10 million guaranteed option bonus)
2011 - $3,817,500
2012 - $4,453,750
2013 - $5.09 million

NEW YORK JETS
Rank #17 vs. Rush
Rank #6 vs. Pass
1=Toughest 32=Easiest
New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg temporarily renamed Manhattan "Revis Island" for as long as the Jets stay in the playoffs. The move was made to honor all-world cornerback Darrelle Revis as he looks to shut down All-Pro wide receiver Reggie Wayne once again.
Pyro's Take:
WOW what a cool move by Mayor Bloomberg! In fact, we'd be 100 percent behind him if he decided to make the change permanent.
Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez is active and will start against the Falcons on Sunday.
Pyro's Take:
The Falcons defense is pretty bad, so Sanchez could make for a 12-man fantasy league sleeper this week. The weather isn't all that great though, so don't expect the world out of him.
Jets coach Rex Ryan officially named quarterback Mark Sanchez the starter for the game against the Falcons on Sunday.
Pyro's Take:
The weather is supposed to be pretty crappy on Sunday, so Sanchez probably shouldn't be starting for your fantasy football team this weekend. Look for Thomas Jones to get a ton of work in Week 15.
Jets rookie QB Mark Sanchez (knee) was out on the field scrimmaging with the first team at practice on Thursday. Coach Rex Ryan has not yet named a starter for Sunday's game, though he is expected to later this afternoon.
Pyro's Take:
If Dirty plays, he wouldn't be too bad of a QB2 for your fantasy team this weekend as the Jets go up against a real bad Atlanta pass D. Check back to make sure Sanchez was named the starter before making a move.
Jets coach Rex Ryan announced on Wednesday that quarterback Kellen Clemens will get the start on Sunday against the Buccaneers and that Mark Sanchez (knee) should be ready for action again in Week 15.
Pyro's Take:
We guess Sanchez's knee didn't come around the way the coaches were hoping for, so better to be safe than sorry against a beatable team like the Bucs. WRs Braylon Edwards and Jerricho Cotchery take an obvious fantasy football hit this weekend with Clemens in there, though still could be worth a play against a lame-ass Bucs D.
When asked how quarterback Mark Sanchez was doing, Jets coach Rex Ryan had this to say:
"He seems to be getting better each day," Ryan said. "We're obviously going to be smart with this. I'm going to consult with the doctors (and) get their opinion of things. We'll consider what's best for the player first, team second. We'll see. I'm optimistic though... because he is so much better [than he was before the weekend]."
Pyro's Take:
We're pretty sure Sanchez will play, but you'll want to check back throughout the week to be sure. He'll wear braces on both knees if he goes, so his mobility might be hampered a bit. He hasn't been a good fantasy football play for awhile, but if QB Kellen Clemens is in there, Braylon Edwards and Jerricho Cotchery might take a hit in value.
According to Jets coach Rex Ryan, rookie QB Mark Sanchez (sprained knee) will not participate in the Jets practice today, but Ryan said he remains optimistic that Sanchez will be able to go next Sunday against the Bucs.
"Right now, we’re feeling very good about where he is right now and I think the doctors are, too," Ryan added.
Pyro's Take:
We're guessing that Dirty Sanchez will give it the old college try next Sunday, though the Jets may want to rest him one game as they likely won't need him against Tampa. We'll keep you posted for fantasy football purposes.
According to Jets coach Rex Ryan, the MRI taken on quarterback Mark Sanchez's right knee today revealed a sprained patellar cruciate ligament (PCL). Ryan also said that he was optimistic that Sanchez would be able to play in Week 14.
Pyro's Take:
We'll see if he's healthy enough to play by the middle of next week, but don't get your hopes up. It's really not that bad of an injury, but we wouldn't doubt it if the team kept him out one game just to be sure. Keep him on your fantasy football bench for now.
Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez (knee) has been declared active for the game tonight and will make his normal start against the Bills.
Pyro's Take:
It's cold and windy out there, which is not good news for Sanchez because as he has said himself, he pretty much sucks in the cold weather. Get him out of your fantasy football lineup if you can.
Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez (knee) went through another full practice on Wednesday and is being listed on the injury report as probable.
Pyro's Take:
Dirty will be under center today, but playing outside in the crappy weather isn't really his strong suit, so we'd suggest finding another signal caller for your fantasy football team this week.
Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez (knee) was said to be wearing a large sleeve over the normal brace he wears on his knee at practice today, and that even though it was not affecting his footwork or throwing, he was moving around with a slight limp.
Pyro's Take:
Sanchez will start this Thursday night against the Bills for sure, but don't expect a whole hell of a lot out of him or his receivers. If he's on your fantasy football team, make sure he's riding pines in Week 13.
According to coach Rex Ryan, Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez (knee) may not be 100 percent healthy when they face-off against the Bills this Thursday night.
"I know he's sore, so we'll see how that goes," Ryan said. "It's a short week... so hopefully he'll be 100 percent when we play."
Pyro's Take:
Not the most convincing vote of confidence, but Dirty Sanchez will still be under center come Thursday. Healthy or not, he's nowhere close to being worth a start on your fantasy football team this week.
Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez was limited in practice on Monday due to the knee he bruised in the win over the Panthers yesterday.
Pyro's Take:
We expect "Dirty" to be ready to go this Thursday night, but check back with us over the next couple of days just in case you need him for your fantasy football team.
Jets coach Rex Ryan reiterated after the game yesterday that he won't be benching rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez anytime soon, and that he didn't even think about it against the Patriots on Sunday.
"I don't think he's going to get any better sitting on the sidelines," Ryan said. "Unless you get on the field, you are not going to get any better."
Pyro's Take:
Ryan is right. Sanchez needs to stay in there for the Jets right now, no matter how brutal it gets, and the team will just have to grow along with him. Backup QB Kellen Clemens certainly isn't the answer.
That said, Sanchez isn't even close to fantasy football worthy unless you're in a dynasty league.
"Was it just the play of Mark Sanchez that got us beat?" Jets coach Rex Ryan asked Monday. "No. But we have to realize that this isn't a guy that's played 20 years in the league... He's got an unbelievable amount of talent, but we've got to be smart with him."
Pyro's Take:
The Jets will look to the run a little more in order to keep the Dirty One comfortable and confident. Sanchez has come back down to earth going 0-3 after starting 3-0. His fantasy football value has as well. Keep him benched for awhile.
