Maurice Jones-Drew

Jacksonville Jaguars

2009 Review

MJD header

Well, the little bowling ball is exactly what we thought he was…  An absolute freak-of-nature touchdown-machine!  He’s one of the few backs in the league who has all the necessary skills to be an every-down back, and even though the Jaguars under-used him at times during the season, he still came through with top-of-the-line numbers.  At 5’7”, 208 lbs., you sometimes feel like you’re watching Christian Okoye in Tecmo Bowl.  The Jags may not have made the playoffs, but once they learn how to utilize their ultimate weapon in MJD, there’s no doubt they’ll be clawing at the post-season door in no time.  Jones-Drew’s combination of power, speed, and pass-catching ability should keep him at the top of the running back class for years to come.

MJD 2009 stats

~ Ranked third in the league with 68 rushes for first downs

~ Set career bests in yards (1,391), attempts (312), rushing touchdowns (15, 16 total), yards/game (86.9), and total yards from scrimmage (1,765)

2010 Fantasy Outlook

MJD won’t be slowing down in 2010, and in fact, we fully expect him to do even better than he did last year.  2009 was his first year as a full-time back, so now that he and the coaches both know what he can do and how much of a load he can take on, MJD should be able to build on the numbers he accumulated last year and challenge CJ2K and AP28 for the top Fantasy RB in the league.  Rashad Jennings is a strong young backup, but he shouldn’t eat into MJD’s carries too much, so no worries on the workload.  Expect big things out of the human bowling ball in 2010, as in 1,400+ rushing yards and 15+ TDs.

~ Showed he can handle a full load as an every-down back

~ If the Jaguars want to stay in Jacksonville, they better put up the wins, and that means riding their best player, MJD

~ The Jags are developing somewhat of a passing attack which will open up more space for MJD

Breaking News

MJD good to go for Thursday night football expand +

Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew (knee) practiced in full on Wednesday and is good to go for the game against the Colts on Thursday night.

Pyro's Take:

The Jags will likely try to play a little ball-control against the high-scoring Colts tonight, so expect MJD to get plenty of action. He's a nice RB1 for your fantasy football team in Week 15.

MJD full participant at practice Tuesday expand +

As expected, Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew (knee) was a full participant in practice on Tuesday.

Pyro's Take:

Indy is nothing special against the run, but the Jags will likely be playing catchup the whole game, so MJD might not get as many touches out of the backfield as you would like in your fantasy football playoffs.

MJD fine for Sunday's game expand +

Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew (knee) went through a full practice on Friday and is listed as probable for the game on Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

MJD will be playing and should be a nice RB1 for your fantasy football team this weekend.

MJD returns to full practice today expand +

Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew (knee) was a full participant at practice on Thursday and is expected to start as usual against the Dolphins this weekend.

Pyro's Take:

MJD, as usual, is a fine RB1 for your fantasy football team this weekend. No worries about the injury as the team is just resting their star back.

MJD given the day off on Wednesday expand +

The Jaguars decided to give their star running back Maurice Jones-Drew (knee) the day off on Wednesday to rest.

Pyro's Take:

If the season ended today, the Jags would make the playoffs, so they need MJD to be rested for the stretch run if they want to hold onto that position. As always, the human bowling ball is a RB1 on your fantasy football team this week and should be started in all formats.

MJD probable for Sunday's game expand +

Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew (knee) is being listed as probable on the team's Week 13 injury report.

Pyro's Take:

MJD is playing, and you should be playing him too. He's our number one fantasy football RB this week.

MJD practices in full on Thursday expand +

Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew (knee) went through a full practice on Thursday after getting the previous day off to rest.

Pyro's Take:

There was never a doubt that MJD was fine, so if you took him out of your fantasy football lineup for any reason, slap yourself and get him back in there.

Jones-Drew skips Wednesday practice expand +

Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew (knee) sat out practice on Wednesday but is fully expected to play this weekend.

Pyro's Take:

The Jags have been resting the human bowling ball the past couple of weeks in order to keep him fresh for the entirety of the season. He'll once again make a nice RB1 on your fantasy football team this week going up against the Texans rush D.

Jones-Drew just fine, ready for Sunday expand +

Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew (knee) was at practice again Friday and is being listed as probable on the Week 12 injury report.

Pyro's Take:

The little bowling ball is just fine and ready to roll as a RB1 on your fantasy football team this weekend.

MJD comes back to practice on Thursday expand +

Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew (knee) returned to a full practice on Thursday.

Pyro's Take:

MJD looks ready to go and should be a great RB1 for your fantasy football team this week going up against a 49ers defense that seems to be slowing down a bit lately.

Jones-Drew probable for this weekend expand +

Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew (knee) is being listed as probable on the team's injury report for Week 10.

Pyro's Take:

MJD will play, and though it's a tough match-up against the Jets, he should without a doubt be in your starting fantasy football lineup no matter the format.

MJD will get more carries going forward expand +

After coming under some serious heat for not getting running back Maurice Jones-Drew the ball more on Sunday, Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio decided to take away QB David Garrard's ability to call audibles on run plays for the time being.
"We took that privilege away or that ability away and said, 'Look, just hand it to him and let him run the ball,'" Del Rio said.

Pyro's Take:

Del Rio is on a serious hot seat right now and is looking to deflect blame away from his ineptitude. MJD had 8 carries for 177 yards, yet should be getting the ball at least 15-20 times a game. There's no way Garrard audibled off of 7+ running plays Jack. Nice try.
Look for MJD to be a prominent fantasy football RB1 from here on out as Del Rio leans on his best player in an effort to save his job.

Coach Del Rio doesn't want to overload MJD expand +

Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio gave running back Maurice Jones-Drew 38 touches in Week 6, and Del Rio believes that's just too much. "I'd like to get Rashad Jennings more involved," Del Rio said. "We need Rashad to step up at some point, [and] Greg Jones to be called upon to do a little bit more."

Pyro's Take:

Del Rio is right. Jones-Drew may be a workhorse, but he's only 5'7", so bodily punishment will eventually take it's toll. Look for Del Rio to keep MJD in check going forward, but that won't affect his fantasy football RB1 value.

MJD isn't happy with Jags offense expand +

After calling himself the second-highest paid "decoy" in the league behind Reggie Bush, Maurice Jones-Drew continued to lash out at both the team's play-calling and its lack of offensive identity.

Pyro's Take:

MJD has every right to be pissed off, as do his fantasy football owners. The team has given him 13 or less carries in 3 of the 5 games this year, with him gaining 100+ yards just once. Look for him to explode sometime soon.

Eight in the box slows MJD for a week expand +

Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew blamed his six-carry, 14-yard and a touchdown performance against the Titans on Sunday on the Titans stacking the box against him.

Pyro's Take:

He's correct in his assessment, and the Jags took advantage of the Titans game-plan by throwing for 323 yards and three TDs. Look for MJD to bust back out for your fantasy football team next Sunday against Seattle.
