Mewelde Moore

Pittsburgh Steelers

Waltzing Mewelde

Yup, even players that look like they are seven and should be on the cover of Huggies products don't escape the art of a Chris Berman nickname.

moore looking young

Believe it or not, he's actually a grown man who's played all 16 games in three of his five NFL seasons.  In his best year as a pro ('05) with the Vikings, he ran 155 times for 662 yards (both career highs), but only one TD while starting eight games.  He also managed to catch 37 passes for 339 yards and two TDs (and he returned one punt for a touchdown).

When FWP and Rashard "I-should've-stayed-in-college-and-lose-to-Middle Tennessee State-in-the-Fudge-Packer-Bowl" Mendenhall both went down with injuries mid-season, Moore was all that was left on the depth chart.  He started four games and carried the ball 80 times for 360 yards (or an average of 90 YPG) and six total TDs, including a 94 total yard and one TD effort vs. the vaunted NY football Giants defense.

Last year, the Pittsburgh running attack went from 3rd to 29th (yet they still won the Super Bowl), largely due to the continued destruction of their offensive line (see "Grounded").

2009 Fantasy Outlook

As last season shows, if Parker and Mendenhall stay healthy, Moore is likely not much of a fantasy option.  The running game will be better now that all starters on the offensive line are back, and the Steelers' Strength of Schedule is very favorable against the run.  Moore only has value as a handcuff, and only in leagues that afford extra roster spots.  Make him the 80th RB off of draft boards this summer.

Moore has had a few bumps and bruises, but nothing that seems to have had a lasting effect on him.

Breaking News

Steelers will use rotation in backfield on Sunday expand +

The Pittsburgh Steelers will use a rotation in the backfield again this week, with Willie Parker starting and getting two series, then Rashad Mendenhall getting one. Mewelde Moore will stay as the third-down and no-huddle back.

Pyro's Take:

We expect Roethlisberger and crew to throw all over the Bears D this Sunday as not only does Chicago have a poor secondary, but the Steelers also have a terrible ground game right now. Moore is the only fantasy option this week, but don't go there.

Parker wants third-down job back expand +

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Willie Parker has been working hard to get his third-down back status up and running again. Parker only caught three balls out of the backfield last year, while Mewelde Moore tied for fourth on the team with 40 receptions. "That was my main focus in the off-season, just work on my hands and give me some plays in the open field one on one vs. a linebacker or one on one vs. a cornerback. That's what I wanted to do and that's what we're planning to do this season."

Pyro's Take:

Fast Willie P. was hampered by injuries most of last year, but that isn't the reason why FWP wasn't the main man. In 2008, the Steelers made Rashard Mendenhall the first running back drafted in the first-round since they took Tim Worley out of Georgia back in 1989. The Steelers brass would love to see that pick work out for them, so they seem to be pushing Parker out of the mix a bit as FWP sits in a contract year this year. We're guessing that the third-down role stays as Moore's in 2009 as the Steelers put their plans to infuse Mendenhall more into their game-plan to work.

Steelers' FWP in a RBBC twice over expand +

RB FWP is going to have to make the most out of less touches this season. Mendenhall is expected to push him for split duties and OC Bruce Arians tipped his hat to the effectiveness of Mewelde Moore last season - even going so far as giving him some due credit for the Steelers unlikely Super Bowl run.

Pyro's Take:

RBBCs involving two backs no longer phase us. However, when three RBs are involved, it does. Parker is in a contract year, but that may not matter if he only gets another 200 or so touches. The Steelers are spooked by all of those injuries and may split up this pie evenly.
