Injury Report

Yellow

Being a smallish back who possesses a body more like a WR than a RB, he’s a bit prone to injury. His toughness was also questioned due to missing time in college because of neck, groin, and right knee strains. Be a little cautious with this kid.

Mike Goodson to return, but has a hamstring injury

Mike Goodson’s road to the playing field took yet another step backward Friday when the running back hurt his hamstring in practice. Goodson, who can return from suspension this week against the Falcons, walked off the field with head trainer John Mellody and later headed for the bikes.

Rex Ryan confirmed that Goodson felt tightness in his hamstring, adding that he did not believe Goodson had participated in any team drills.

“He’s a little tight,” Ryan said. “The thing about Mike is, like we’ve said, we’ll see how he progresses during the week. It’s tough when you’ve been out that long. . . . I just will say, like I said yesterday, I hope he plays. That’s what I’m hoping for.”

Pyro's take: This is tough news for Goodson, who looked like a prime candidate to get a good amount of touches this week, but even if he does play you can expect Bilal Powell to shoulder the major load this week.

Mike Goodson returns to practice field

Rookie running back Mike Goodson (concussion) returned to the Panthers practice field on Wednesday after missing last week's game against the Redskins.

Pyro's take: We'll see if he gets his kickoff return duties back, but his real fantasy football value comes as a backup to DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart.

Mike Goodson listed as out for Sunday's game

Panthers running back Mike Goodson (concussion) will not suit up for the game on Sunday against the Redskins.

Pyro's take: Goodson also has some sort of illness, so it's not a surprise to see the Panthers sitting him down for the game. Keep him at the end of your fantasy football bench in case of injury to Jonathan Stewart and/or DeAngelo Williams.

Mike Goodson still not practicing yet

Panthers rookie running back Mike Goodson missed another practice on Thursday dealing with the concussion he suffered in Week 3.

Pyro's take: We thought the youngster would be back by now, especially since the team just had a bye, but concussions can be tricky. His fantasy football value is still as a deep handcuff in case of injuries.

Rookie Mike Goodson misses practice Wednesday

Panthers rookie running back Mike Goodson missed practice on Wednesday recovering from a concussion he suffered against the Cowboys in Week 3.

Pyro's take: Goodson is still third in line behind DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, so his fantasy football value is really just based on possible injuries.

Rookie Mike Goodson back at practice

Panthers rookie running back Mike Goodson (illness) returned to the practice field today and should be active for the game against the Cowboys on Monday night.

Pyro's take: The rookie hasn't done much this year with both DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart being healthy, but keep him on your fantasy bench for now as he might be useful if either of the those go down.

Carolina RBs Stewart and Goodson sick, miss practice

Carolina Panthers running backs Jonathan Stewart and Mike Goodson both missed practice on Thursday due to being sick.

Pyro's take: As for Stewart, at least it's not his Achilles flaring up again. We assume both guys will be healthy enough to play on Monday night, but if one or both are not, especially Stewart, expect DeAngelo Williams to get some good fantasy numbers with about 30 touches against the Cowboys.

Goodson likely to be backup RB in Week 1

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart, who has been dealing with an Achilles injury for most of camp, is unlikely to be ready for Week 1 of the regular season. Stewart has currently missed 40 of the 48 practices the Panthers have had in 2009.

Pyro's take: Luckily the Panthers made a move in the off-season to soothe this sort of situation by drafting RB Mike Goodson in the fourth round. Goodson may not bring the power that the Panthers depend on out of Stewart, but he's shown himself to be more than capable in a backup role. It's time to boost DeAngelo Williams and Goodson up and drop Stewart a few spots on your cheat sheet.

Rookie Mike Goodson getting closer to backup RB role

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart missed practice again on Monday, but this time it was due to personal reasons instead of the Achilles injury he's been battling most of August.

Pyro's take: The Panthers have been doing their best to keep quiet about the injury, so it's possible Stewart was out getting a second opinion concerning his ongoing Achilles problem. The further this situation gets stretched out, the more we have to bump Stewart down and Mike Goodson up in our rankings. Keep a close eye on this situation and be ready to grab the rookie Goodson as your handcuff to DeAngelo on draft day.

Rookie Mike Goodson to see increased role?

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart is still sitting out practices and there is no firm timetable for his return. The Panthers are taking their time with Stewart as they don't want to rush their talented RB back from his Achilles injury. With the emergence of rookie RB Mike Goodson, they can at least afford this kind of patience for now.

Pyro's take: After the morning practice on Wednesday, coach John Fox said that he's been impressed enough by rookie RB Mike Goodson that he could envision him playing a significant role on offense, not as just a spot player or returner. Whether this is true or not, we would have to think that Fox would rather have his big bruiser back than have to depend on a rookie to spell DeAngelo Williams for a significant amount of time.

Stewart has "ongoing pain" in Achilles

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart sat out the final seven practice days in training camp and didn't practice with the team on Friday in Charlotte either. When asked about the injury, Stewart said, "Just imagine you waking up in the morning and you have a knee problem or it’s just stiff. Every morning it’s that way, every time I walk. It’s just a nagging injury."

Pyro's take: Stewart also didn't know about his prospects for playing in the rest of the preseason. "Ask the trainers," he said. "I’m planning on being there for sure in the regular season. We just have to play it by ear."

The situation is starting to get a little scary for fantasy owners, especially with the preseason performance rookie Mike Goodson has put up thus far. Hopefully the pain in his Achilles doesn't linger for too much longer, as Stewart might have trouble keeping his split of carries with DeAngelo if it does.

Mike Goodson fined for throat-slashing gesture

Carolina Panthers rookie RB Mike Goodson was fined $7,500 by the NFL for his unsportsmanlike throat-slashing gesture in Monday night's preseason game against the New York Giants.

Pyro's take: Goodson also picked up a 15-yard penalty for his antics, which was done after an impressive 14-yard TD run. Goodson has a ton of talent, but will likely be stuck as the third RB on the Panthers this season behind DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. If one of those two guys goes down, Goodson could end up having some pretty good value.

Goodson looks good in preseason opener

Carolina Panthers RB Mike Goodson looked impressive in the team's preseason game against the Giants tonight. The rookie tailback ended up with 43 yards on six carries, including a 14-yard TD, while also hauling in two catches for 16 yards.

Pyro's take: The nimble-footed Goodson may not be a big fantasy contributor this season, but it's nice to know that if either DeAngelo or Stewart go down, the Panthers have a quality guy to fit into their place.

Panthers not set on kick returner

The Carolina Panthers are auditioning at least four players for their kick returner opening, including rookie RB Mike Goodson.

Pyro's take: Goodson is fast, and we don't expect him to see much time with Williams and Stewart at RB, so this could be a place the Panthers are trying to use their fourth-round pick.
