Nate Washington

Tennessee Titans

Slot

Nate Washington signed as an undrafted free agent back in 2005 with the Pittsburgh Steelers.  You'd be undrafted, too, if you had attended a little Division II college called Tiffin University.  Nate was a slot WR on the Steelers and averaged 35 catches for 568 yards and four TDs over that time.  Good numbers for the third options on a team that doesn't run the ball much.

He has good height at 6'1" but needs to bulk up his 185 pound frame.  Despite his success in the limited opportunities in Pittsburgh, this stat concerns us a bit:

His per game numbers actually took a bit of a hit in games where he was the featured WR2.  We would expect numbers to increase going up one on the food chain, but not so with Nate.

He steps into a promising situation in Tennessee as the current stable of WRs consists of Justin Gage and a rookie, Kenny Britt.  Gage is weak and has embarrassing numbers over six years - especially in that he's been given opportunities along the way and just can't seize on any of them.  Plus, the numbers they threw at Washington, $27 million with $9 million guaranteed, suggests that the Titans have big plans for Washington.

2009 Fantasy Outlook

Washington has talent, but needs to bulk up and prove he is capable of handling "starter" reps if he is going to be depended on to start as a fantasy WR.  Depending on Kenny Britt's development, Washington could be the only dependable target in '09.  Make him the 79th WR off of draft boards this summer.

Contract

Washington signed a six-year, $27 million contract with the Titans in March of this past year.  The deal included $9 million guaranteed.  Terms of the deal have not been disclosed as of yet.

Injury Report

Green

Nate hasn’t missed a contest in three years.

Breaking News

Washington back at Titans practice Friday expand +

Titans wide receiver Nate Washington (quad) practiced in full Friday and is listed as probable on the team's injury report.

Pyro's Take:

Washington has a great match-up against the Jaguars, but with Vince Young starting the game under center for the first time this year, it's difficult to predict how the passing game will go. Start him on your fantasy football team at your own risk.

Nate Washington a scratch from Thursday practice expand +

The Titans big off-season free agent acquisition, wide receiver Nate Washington, was absent from practice today dealing with a quadriceps injury.

Pyro's Take:

Nate must have done something in practice on Wednesday as this is the first we're hearing of this. Check back tomorrow to see what his story is as he has a great fantasy football match-up against a very weak Jaguars pass D.

Nate Washington probable for game against Colts expand +

Titans wide receiver Nate Washington (concussion) is listed as probable on the team's weekly injury report after practicing in full all week.

Pyro's Take:

The Titans look to be passing a bunch yet again as they face one of the hottest teams in the league on Sunday. Nate could be a decent WR3 play on your fantasy football team because of it.

Washington fine after leaving game on Sunday expand +

Titans wide receiver Nate Washington left the field with a bad headache on Sunday after getting hit hard late in the game, but should be fine for Week 5.

Pyro's Take:

The Titans continue to have to play catchup passing football as their defense is awful right now. If this continues, Washington could be worth something at some point, but for now, keep him on your fantasy football bench.

Nate Washington to see increased role in Week 2 expand +

Titans wide receiver Nate Washington (hamstring) is expected to play "the number of plays a starter would play" against the Texans next week, coach Jeff Fisher said.

Pyro's Take:

The Titans are counting on Nate to have a big impact in their passing game this year. Unfortunately for Kenny Britt fantasy owners, this means Britt's time on the field will be cut into by the more established Washington.

Nate Washington to play, but won't start expand +

Tennessee Titans wide receiver Nate Washington is active for tonight's game against the Steelers, but won't be in the starting lineup. Rookie WR Kenny Britt will be getting the start in his place.

Pyro's Take:

Expect Washington to get between 20 and 25 plays tonight, which means that neither he nor Kenny Britt should be in starting fantasy lineups. Playing against a tough Pittsburgh D, you probably shouldn't have started them anyway.

Washington not practicing with first team expand +

Tennessee Titans wide receiver Kenny Britt has practiced with the first-team offense all week and will start in place of injured WR Nate Washington Thursday night against the Steelers.

Pyro's Take:

Washington may get in the game for some snaps, but the Titans are likely to take it easy on him until he's fully healed. Britt is getting his first chance to shine real quick in his rookie year. We'll see how the kid reacts tonight.

Nate Washington not ruled out after second straight practice expand +

Tennessee Titans wide receiver Nate Washington practiced for a second straight day on Tuesday, leaving open speculation that he might play Thursday night. "I don't know if I am going to play or not, that's up to coach Fisher," Washington said. "I'm pretty happy with the progress that I've made ... Nothing is holding me back right now."

Pyro's Take:

Washington suffered a strained hamstring on August 24th and has been fighting his way back ever since. His progress has been quick, but we're not sure he's ready for starter-type minutes on the field yet, especially against a defense like Pittsburgh's. Even if he was 100 percent healthy, we still wouldn't start him in Week 1.

Titans receiver Nate Washington returns to practice expand +

Tennessee Titans WR Nate Washington, who was recovering from a hamstring injury suffered on August 24th, returned to practice Monday on a limited basis.

Pyro's Take:

Washington claims that he is better than 80 percent at this point, and would love to play a limited number of snaps against the Steelers on Thursday if cleared. The Titans want to start the season off with a win, but will they risk further injuring their most talented receiver to get it? “I haven’t ruled him out for the game," head coach Jeff Fisher said. “So we’ll just have to see how he is."

Our guess is he's sitting. Either way, don't start him this week against a tough Pittsburgh D.

Nate Washington improving, still not ruled out for Week 1 expand +

Tennessee Titans WR Nate Washington said his injured hamstring is improving, but that it's coach Jeff Fisher's call as to whether or not he plays in the regular season opener. "He's much better than he was last week," Fisher said. "He clearly won't play Thursday but he's got his eye on the opener so we'll just have to wait and see."

Pyro's Take:

The Titans would love to have their off-season addition healthy for the first game of the season, if only to take a little pressure off of rookie WR Kenny Britt. Keep Washington in the back of your mind on draft day as a late-round value pick.

Rookie WR Kenny Britt to take over starting duties for injured Washington expand +

Tennessee Titans first-round pick, rookie WR Kenny Britt, will take over the starting duties for the time being while the injured Nate Washington deals with his right hamstring injury. Washington's status for the Titans Week 1 game at Pittsburgh is up in the air. "I'll say it is not season-ending," Coach Jeff Fisher said. "With the information I have right now I haven't ruled him out for the opener. I don't know."

Pyro's Take:

Britt has played well enough and shown enough skills to warrant the role at this point, but the Titans would love to have Washington back sooner than later. Washington has been a bright spot for the Titans thus far in the preseason, but Britt seems ready for the chance to show his worth. "It is my opportunity to show if somebody goes down I can fill their shoes," said Britt. "If anyone goes down on the receiving corps you're expected to step up and fill their shoes."

Washington could emerge as a back-end fantasy starter this year as the WR1 on the Titans, while Britt has enough talent and upside to warrant a late-round flier in drafts as well. We'll keep you updated on the situation as it goes.

Nate Washington injures right hamstring in practice expand +

Titans big off-season addition WR Nate Washington went down with a right hamstring injury in practice Monday. Washington is scheduled to undergo an MRI and is expected to miss the final two preseason games.

Pyro's Take:

Washington has been everything the Titans were hoping for during the first part of training camp, but will now have to play the waiting game while combing through their roster for a temporary replacement. Washington stood to be the WR1 for the Titans this season, as his abilities were shown to outweigh the feeble Justin Gage's. For now, Justin Gage takes over as the WR1 again for the Titans and we'll keep you updated on Nate's progress with the injury as it unfolds.

Gage, Washington both start at WR for Titans in Hall of Fame Game expand +

Tennessee Titans WR Justin Gage started the game at split end, while fellow WR Nate Washington started the game at the flanker position. Nate had himself a couple of catches for 25 yards with Gage only corralling one catch for 19 yards.

Pyro's Take:

Seems to us like the Titans are pretty set with Gage and Washington starting out wide this year, though rookie Kenny Britt could make his way into the mix at some point. Washington should be the more interesting player, both in reality and in fantasy, though neither should really be more than a deep backup on your team this year as the Titans are still a run-first offensive team.
