Cobb out 6-8 weeks after nasty hit

Wide receiver Randall Cobb suffered a fractured fibula in Green Bay's 19-17 win over the Baltimore Ravens and will miss 6-8 weeks, a source said Monday.

The third-year wide receiver left Sunday's game in the first half after absorbing a low tackle from Baltimore's Matt Elam. He eventually left for the locker room on a cart and later returned on crutches.

The source indicated that Cobb nearly broke the fibula all the way through on the play.

Pyro's take: This was a real vicious hit on Cobb and he is damn lucky to still have a leg today. He is going to miss 6-8 weeks, which means that he should be back in the first or second week of the fantasy playoffs, but how effective he will be in those first games could cost you a playoff game. If you have depth and can wait to see how he performs upon return then keep him. James Jones was also injured and could miss a few weeks, so Jordy Nelson and Jermichael Finley will see an increase in fantasy value.

Randall Cobb Looking to Expand His Role in 2013

Randall Cobb does not want to be labeled as a slot receiver and had this to say on the topic.

“I don’t want to work on just being a slot receiver, I want to be a receiver, period. I want to be able to go outside, too. So one thing I’ve worked on this off-season, too, is my outside routes and trying to put that into my game so I’m not just labeled a ‘slot guy.’”

Pyro's take: Cobb is a great talent, and there is proof out there in Percy Harvin, Victor Cruz and Wes Welker that these receiver can be counted on as more of a threat when used outside as well.

There is the fact that Tavon Austin was and is the best receiving talent that was available in 2013, and the Rams view him as more than just a slot receiver as well. Cobb has one of the best quarterbacks in the game, and if he dedicates himself to being a better receiver, there is no doubt that he can break the glass ceiling for slot guys with over 11 or more touchdown catches.

Cobb may be the first of the slot receivers to go to the next level, but with T.Y. Hilton and Tavon Austin around, he will have company soon.
