Ricky Williams

Miami Dolphins

2009 Review

Who woulda thunk it?  Williams started off the year as a 32-year old handcuff to a younger, hungrier (well, in one sense of the word) Ronnie Brown, and then ended up sneaking in as the tenth leading rusher the NFL produced in 2009.  If you can find one NFL fan (fantasy player or not) who says that they saw this coming, well then you should send him over to BP.  The Dolphins lost Brown to a foot injury in the middle of their ninth game of the season, and even though he was the main cog in their Wildcat offense, Ricky made sure that they didn’t miss a beat.  Even though the team’s record didn’t improve (4-5 with Brown, 3-4 without), Ricky impressed by putting up three 100-yard games and 6 combined touchdowns over those past seven weeks.  For a guy who was basically written off as an elite running back and hadn’t put up a 1,000-yard season since 2003, that’s one hell of an accomplishment.

2010 Fantasy Outlook

As well as his 30’s has been treating him thus far, the prognosis for the rest of his football career doesn’t go past ‘elite handcuff status’.  Ronnie Brown will be back and playing for a contract, so Ricky will be taking the same backseat he occupied at the beginning of 2009.  Of course, Ronnie has been healthy for an entire season just once out of his five years in the league, so the Dolphin Duo should be handcuffed together once again.  However, if Brown does happen to stay healthy, expect no more than a repeat of Ricky’s numbers from two years ago (2008- see below).

~ Ronnie Brown is back and playing for a contract

~ Chad Henne looks like he may have something at QB, so Ricky might not be used as much with the Wildcat possibly going by the wayside

~ He did take a sabbatical for a few years in his mid 20's so he's not as worn down as most RBs of his age are.

Handcuff

Ricky is definitely the handcuff here, and a really nice one at that.  Ronnie Brown is the man in charge, but Ricky gets his fair share of touches out of the backfield as well, and if something were to happen to Ronnie (such as a pound of weed being found in his locker somehow), Ricky would assume the starting duties once again and pretty much double his touches

The Long and Winding Road

Everybody knows Ricky Williams' history.  He smoked pot, went to Australia and took a few years off because of depression and anxiety disorders, etc...

We got all that.  We're here to talk about Ricky Williams and football.

First off, let it be known that Ricky is an incredible athlete.  He wasn't a three-letter star athlete in high school... he played four sports: football, wrestling, track and baseball.  He was drafted by the Phillies in the 8th round of an amateur talent draft in 1995 and ended up playing four years at the Class A level.  Not too shabby.

But obviously his career took him towards football where he's been very up and down in his career.  His best years came between 2000-2003 with the Saints where he put up over 1,000 yards every year.  He made the Pro Bowl in 2002 while leading the league with 383 carries and 1,853 yards (115.8 yds/gm), then went on to receive even more carries the next year (392), which is completely unheard of.

His life and career took a downward spiral after that, but he miraculously rebounded last year to put up his first 1,000 yard season since 2003 while scoring 11 rushing touchdowns which, believe it or not, is the second highest season total of his career.  Due to his time off, he still has the mileage and frame of a 28-year-old running back, not the 33-year-old dinosaur he'll be in 2010.  Unfortunately, Miami has a stud named Ronnie Brown who, barring injury, has taken a significant chunk of carries from Ricky.  Whether that's helped him stay physically healthy and in shape or not, we don't know, but it's hard to see another 1,000 yard season out of him in the future.  Either way, it's amazing to think what an incredible football player he could have been.

Injury Report

Green

Ricky may be a risk in many other ways, but an injury risk he is not. He’s getting up there in age, but his mileage is still that of a 28-year old and he played a full 16-game season last year

Breaking News

Ricky Williams active vs. Steelers today expand +

Dolphins running back Ricky Williams has been declared active for the game against the Steelers today.

Pyro's Take:

SIX years between 1,000-yard seasons. That's all I really have to say. Unbelievable. Get this guy in your fantasy lineup, even against the mighty Steelers rush D. It's gotten to the point where I wouldn't put anything past the guy, so expect a nice game.

Ricky to take on full-time role with Ronnie Brown out expand +

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano confirmed on Tuesday that running back Ronnie Brown (foot) has been ruled out and will not play against the Panthers on Thursday.

Pyro's Take:

This news was expected. Ricky Williams becomes an extremely interesting fantasy football RB until Brown comes back, as he can confidently be started as an RB2 now in pretty much every league regardless of format.

Williams to start in Ronnie Brown's absence expand +

Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown missed practice on Monday, and according to FOX Sports' Jay Glazer, the team is more concerned with the foot injury Brown suffered on Sunday than the ankle injury.

Pyro's Take:

Certain foot injuries can keep a player out for multiple weeks, so we'll have to keep you posted on the exact nature of the injury. Either way, Ronnie won't be playing on Thursday, which makes Ricky Williams quite an interesting fantasy football player again.

Ricky Williams practices on Wednesday expand +

Dolphins running back Ricky Williams, who supposedly suffered a high ankle sprain on Monday night, was on the field practicing with the team on Wednesday.

Pyro's Take:

There was no high ankle sprain, obviously. With the Dolphins on a bye this week, Ricky should be fine for Week 7 against the Saints and can be used as a flex play on your fantasy football team.

Ricky's ankle injury "not serious" expand +

Dolphins running back Ricky Williams made his way off the field under his own power after suffering an ankle injury late in the game Monday night. The Miami Herald states that the injury is not considered serious.

Pyro's Take:

Ricky should be just fine as he continues his rejuvenated 2009 campaign. Williams is currently putting up some decent flex numbers for your fantasy football team.

Ricky Williams signs one-year extension with Dolphins expand +

Miami Dolphins RB Ricky Williams revealed to the media on Tuesday that he had signed a one-year, 4.35 million extension through 2010 this past off-season. Ricky also stated that he plans to retire from football after that contract runs out.

Pyro's Take:

Though Ricky seems to have lost a step after watching him this preseason, he's still a great asset to the Dolphins team. As coach Tony Sparano puts it, "From what he brings from a work-ethic standpoint, as a pro in the meeting rooms, he's a good ambassador of our message to the younger players."

Ricky has had a tumultuous career to be sure, so we commend him to the utmost for keeping his head and finishing his career with honor and class. Keep Ricky pegged as your handcuff to Ronnie Brown in upcoming drafts.

Ronnie Brown shows his stuff while Ricky loses ground expand +

Miami Dolphins starting RB Ronnie Brown had himself a nice preseason game against Carolina Saturday night rushing the ball seven times for 31 yards while adding three receptions for 43 yards and a TD. Brown's backup, Ricky Williams, ran for 21 yards on just three carries and caught one ball for seven yards.

Pyro's Take:

Ronnie put up 74 yards of combined offense in just one quarter of action against the Carolina first-team defense. It looks as if the reports about Brown being back to form are true, which doesn't bode well for the 32-year old Ricky Williams this season. These two should still be handcuffed together on draft day, but it looks as if the Miami RBBC might be leaning a little more towards Brown's favor this season.

Ricky sluggish in preseason game expand +

Miami Dolphins RB Ricky Williams turned in a relatively poor effort Monday night going for 31 yards on 10 carries. Ricky was also held without a reception, but only because he dropped a TD pass from Henne.

Pyro's Take:

Guess the rumors were right in that Ricky has lost a step. Williams only had two runs out of 10 go for more than 2 yards, and dropping a TD pass to boot certainly doesn't sit well with possible fantasy owners out there. Smoke 'em if you got 'em Ricky.

Ricky Williams better than last year expand +

Miami Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano said that RB Ricky Williams is "ahead of last year" and he attended all of the team's 46 workouts.

Pyro's Take:

Williams, whose new favorite hobby is massage therapy, appears to be taking football seriously after he was soul searching for the last five years. If you draft Ronnie Brown, you have to make plans for Ricky as a handcuff. They are both in contract years.
